Tax software can handle a straightforward U.S. federal crypto return when every wallet and exchange is connected, records are complete, and imported transactions reconcile to your own history. A crypto-experienced CPA or enrolled agent is the safer choice when basis is missing, transfers do not reconcile, or your activity includes DeFi, staking, mining, forks, airdrops, NFTs, gifts, wages, business income, foreign issues, or an IRS notice. Software can calculate and format transactions, but you remain responsible for truthful reporting and for keeping records that support every number.
What can crypto tax software actually do?
Crypto tax software aggregates transaction files or exchange connections, classifies activity, calculates gains and losses, and produces tax forms or reports for filing software. It is most effective at arithmetic and data organization; it cannot independently determine the correct tax treatment of an unusual transaction when the facts are ambiguous.

A typical report maps taxable sales and exchanges to Form 8949 and Schedule D, and may summarize ordinary-income items for Schedule 1. Some services also create files for a 1099-DA workflow or let you export a report for a tax preparer. CoinTracker, for example, says users can download reports, import them into TurboTax or H&R Block, or share them with a CPA.
Imports still need review. CoinTracker’s TurboTax instructions warn that the import is limited to 1,000 capital-gain or loss transactions and that certain income categories require manual entry. A successful import therefore is not proof that the return is complete.

When is software usually enough?
Software is generally reasonable for a simple, well-documented fact pattern: you bought and sold digital assets on supported exchanges, have complete transaction histories, and can explain every transfer between your own accounts.
Checks to make before relying on an automated report
- Every exchange, hardware wallet, software wallet and relevant on-chain address is included.
- CSV files cover the entire tax year, including transactions on accounts you later closed.
- Transfers between your own wallets are identified as transfers rather than taxable disposals.
- Purchase dates, units, proceeds, fees and cost basis are present for each disposition.
- The software’s gain and loss totals reconcile to your downloaded exchange records and bank or brokerage activity.
- You understand how the program classified staking rewards, airdrops, forks, gifts and other income.
- The resulting Form 8949, Schedule D, Schedule 1 and any 1099-DA data agree with the source records you retained.
If those checks pass and your return has no unusual state, foreign or business issues, paying for a professional review may add little value compared with carefully reviewing the software output yourself.
When should you hire a crypto tax professional?
Choose a CPA or enrolled agent who regularly handles digital assets when the return requires judgment, reconstruction or representation rather than simple data entry.
Missing or unreliable cost basis
If an exchange history is incomplete, an account was migrated, or coins were acquired through several platforms, the software may assign an incorrect basis or classify proceeds as entirely taxable. A professional can reconstruct lots from statements, blockchain records and contemporaneous documentation, then explain assumptions that must be disclosed.
Many wallets, exchanges or unresolved transfers
Each additional account increases the chance of duplicate deposits, omitted withdrawals and transfers that look like sales. A preparer can trace transaction IDs and reconcile beginning and ending balances instead of accepting an automated “unknown” classification.

DeFi and smart-contract activity
Liquidity provision, swaps, lending, wrapped assets, staking through protocols and token rewards can create several possible tax events in one transaction. Software can label the data, but the legal characterization often depends on what you received, surrendered and controlled. Obtain advice when a protocol’s activity does not fit a clearly documented software category.
Staking, mining, forks and airdrops
These activities can create ordinary income when assets are received or become available, followed by capital gain or loss when they are later disposed of. Timing and fair-market value are fact-specific, especially for a fork or airdrop with limited liquidity. A professional can determine which income schedule and valuation method fit your facts.
NFTs, gifts, wages and business activity
NFT transactions may combine collectibles, inventory, royalties and ordinary income. Digital assets received as wages or through a business can require wage reporting or Schedule C, while gifts may trigger Form 709 and specialized basis rules. These are poor candidates for an unreviewed one-click filing.
Foreign, state or notice issues
Foreign exchanges, non-U.S. residence, community-property questions, state conformity differences and an IRS notice require advice beyond a federal capital-gain worksheet. Hire a professional before responding to a notice or amending a filed return.
What does the IRS require for digital assets?
The IRS treats digital assets as property for federal tax purposes. You must keep records of purchases, receipts, sales, exchanges and other dispositions, including dates, units, fair-market value and basis. Form 1040 filers must answer the digital-assets question, and income from digital-asset transactions must be reported even when no payee statement is issued.

IRS FAQ A108 states: “You must report income, gain, or loss from all taxable transactions involving digital assets on your federal income tax return for the taxable year of the transaction, regardless of the amount or whether you receive a payee statement or information return.” That rule means a missing 1099 does not excuse an omitted transaction.
Which forms commonly appear?
| Activity | Common federal reporting location | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Sale or exchange of a digital asset | Form 8949 and Schedule D | Date acquired, date disposed, units, proceeds, basis and holding period |
| Staking, mining, forks or airdrops | Often Schedule 1 for ordinary income, followed by capital reporting on later disposal | Receipt or availability date and fair-market value |
| Digital assets received as wages | Form 1040 wage reporting | Employer reporting and the value included in wages |
| Business activity involving digital assets | Schedule C may apply | Business purpose, expenses, inventory or payment treatment |
| Gifts of digital assets | Form 709 may apply | Gift date, value, donor basis and whether a filing threshold is met |
These are common destinations, not an automatic classification for every transaction. The facts and the applicable year determine the correct form.
How do the new 1099-DA rules change the decision?
Treasury and IRS final regulations require custodial brokers to report gross proceeds for transactions occurring on or after January 1, 2025. Basis reporting applies to certain transactions occurring on or after January 1, 2026. The rules improve information reporting; they do not create a new digital-asset tax.
Your own records remain essential because broker reporting may not cover self-custody wallets, decentralized protocols, transfers between accounts or older lots. Compare every 1099-DA with your transaction history and correct discrepancies rather than copying the form blindly.
How do I use software without filing an incomplete return?
Follow a reconciliation process instead of treating the first generated PDF as final.

- Inventory accounts. List every exchange, wallet, address, protocol and account used during the tax year, including accounts that were closed.
- Export primary records. Download transaction CSVs, statements, deposit and withdrawal histories, staking or mining summaries and any 1099-DA forms. Keep the original files unchanged.
- Connect or import data. Add each source to the software, then check date ranges, time zones, duplicate files and whether unsupported chains or tokens require a separate import.
- Resolve transfers. Match withdrawals to deposits using transaction IDs, timestamps and amounts. Do not mark a movement between your own wallets as a sale simply because it left an exchange.
- Review classifications. Inspect staking, mining, airdrop, fork, gift, NFT, DeFi and payment entries individually. Change a label only when your records support the change.
- Reconcile balances. Compare beginning and ending holdings and total deposits and withdrawals with exchange statements and bank records. Investigate unexplained gains, losses or “missing” assets.
- Generate forms and compare them. Check Form 8949 totals against Schedule D, income summaries against Schedule 1, and reported proceeds against any 1099-DA.
- Enter items the importer cannot handle. Manually add income categories or forms identified in the software instructions, such as the categories CoinTracker flags for its TurboTax workflow.
- Archive support. Save the final report, source exports, wallet addresses, transaction IDs, valuation notes and explanations for any estimates with your tax records.
Stop and obtain professional help if you cannot explain a material balance difference, if basis is still missing, or if a classification changes the result substantially.
What should you bring to a CPA or enrolled agent?
A professional can work faster and give better advice when the evidence is organized. Provide a complete account inventory, original exchange exports, wallet addresses, transaction-ID lists, prior-year returns, digital-asset reports, 1099-DA forms, records of fiat deposits and withdrawals, and notes about gifts, wages, mining equipment, staking receipts, DeFi positions or NFT sales.
Ask whether the preparer routinely handles digital assets, self-custody and decentralized finance, and whether the engagement includes basis reconstruction, state returns, amended returns or IRS correspondence. Clarify who reviews classifications and who signs the return; a software subscription alone does not transfer responsibility for accuracy.

It can be mathematically accurate while still producing the wrong tax result if data is missing or a transaction is mislabeled. Accuracy depends on complete inputs, supported chains and exchanges, correct transfer matching, appropriate fair-market values and a review of exceptions.
Use the software as a calculation and documentation system, not as an authority that resolves unsettled law. Preserve evidence for every manual adjustment, and ask a professional about positions that could be challenged or that affect several tax forms.

How should you decide between software, review and full preparation?
The choice is a risk and effort decision rather than a contest between products.
| Your situation | Practical approach | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One or two supported exchanges; complete buy and sell history; no unusual income | Software with personal reconciliation | Calculations and forms are routine when records tie out |
| Several wallets or exchanges; transfers need matching; some basis questions | Software plus a professional review | You retain automation while obtaining judgment on exceptions |
| DeFi, staking, mining, forks, airdrops, NFTs, gifts, wages or business activity | Crypto-experienced professional, with software as a data source | Multiple forms and fact-specific classifications increase error risk |
| IRS notice, amended return, foreign issue or unresolved material discrepancy | Professional representation before filing or responding | The issue may involve procedure, disclosure and jurisdiction-specific advice |
Time matters too. Cleaning a year of records yourself may cost less cash but require many hours of matching and documentation. A professional fee may be worthwhile when the expected tax, penalty or lost time from an error exceeds the cost of review.

What mistakes cause the most trouble?
- Reporting only assets sold for dollars while omitting crypto-to-crypto exchanges.
- Assuming transfers between personal wallets are taxable sales.
- Using an exchange’s displayed “profit” without verifying historical basis and fees.
- Ignoring small transactions because no tax form was received.
- Double-counting airdrops, staking rewards or deposits imported from more than one source.
- Filing a 1099-DA amount without reconciling it to self-custody activity and lot selection.
- Failing to retain records after an account is closed or an exchange changes its export format.
Correcting these problems before filing is usually easier than explaining an unexplained discrepancy after a notice arrives.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can TurboTax handle crypto taxes?
It can accept supported crypto tax reports, but the import has limits and some income categories require manual entry. Review the resulting forms against your source records and use a professional when your activity falls outside straightforward sales and exchanges.
Do I need a CPA for cryptocurrency if I only bought and held?
If you truly had no sale, exchange, payment, reward or other disposition, there may be no capital transaction to calculate for that year, but you should retain purchase records and answer the Form 1040 digital-assets question accurately. A professional is useful if you received rewards or cannot establish the acquisition history.
What if I have multiple wallets or DeFi transactions?
Use transaction IDs and wallet balances to reconcile every movement before deciding how to report it. Because DeFi actions can combine swaps, loans, liquidity positions and rewards, get digital-asset-specific advice when the software cannot explain the tax treatment.

No. Broker reporting may omit self-custody, decentralized-protocol and transfer activity, and basis may be limited to certain transactions beginning in 2026. Keep your own dates, units, values and basis documentation and reconcile the form.
