Do SBI Pensioners Need to Submit a Life Certificate Every Year?

Yes. State Bank of India (SBI) says pensioners must furnish a life certificate to their Pension Disbursing Agency (PDA) in November every year. You do not necessarily have to visit an SBI branch: depending on your pension category and ability to complete Aadhaar authentication, you may submit a paper certificate, generate a Digital Life Certificate through Jeevan Pramaan, or request home assistance.

What SBI’s annual life-certificate rule means

A life certificate confirms that a pension recipient is alive and remains eligible for pension payments. In its Procedure for Generating Jeevan Pramaan / Digital Life Certificate (version 1.0), SBI states: “Pensioners are required to furnish a ‘Life Certificate’ to these PDAs in November every year either by presenting themselves personally or by delivering a life certificate in the prescribed format.”

Therefore, the requirement is recurring, not a one-time form submitted at retirement. Unless an applicable category-specific process says otherwise, an SBI pensioner should plan to submit a certificate during November each year. The reviewed SBI documents do not establish the exact opening and closing dates for the 2026 cycle or confirm a current extension. Ask your pension-paying branch for the applicable window before relying on a previous year’s dates.

The annual rule does not mean every pensioner must queue at a branch. SBI lists several ways to comply, including manual submission, branch-assisted biometric authentication, personal digital generation and assistance for people who cannot travel.

Which pensioners should treat this as their deadline?

Regular SBI pension recipients

If SBI is your Pension Disbursing Agency, the November submission rule applies to your pension account under SBI’s general procedure. The certificate is normally delivered to the branch or generated electronically for the pension system to record.

Re-employed pensioners and remarried family pensioners

SBI’s indexed general submission page says re-employed pensioners and remarried family pensioners must submit their life certificates physically. That instruction is narrower than the general availability of digital Jeevan Pramaan. If you fall into either category, do not assume that a digital submission will be accepted; confirm the required paper format and branch process first.

SBI staff pensioners

A separate SBI notice issued in October 2024 describes a process for staff pensioners using video submission through HRMS, Jeevan Pramaan and Aadhaar Face RD. For the digital modes listed in that notice, Aadhaar seeding in HRMS is mandatory. The notice directs family pensioners covered by it to visit a branch. This is a staff-pensioner procedure, not a replacement for the general rule for every SBI pensioner.

Because these categories have different instructions, identify your pension type before choosing a submission route. Your pension-paying branch or the relevant SBI pension office can tell you which rule controls your case.

Route What you do What SBI documentation establishes Best suited to Important qualification
Physical certificate at an SBI branch Present or deliver the certificate in the prescribed format to the paying branch. SBI’s general submission material lists manual physical submission. Anyone who can attend or arrange delivery and prefers paper. Re-employed and remarried family pensioners are specifically told to submit physically on SBI’s indexed general page.
Branch-assisted Digital Life Certificate Give your details and complete fingerprint or IRIS authentication at a branch. SBI documents Aadhaar-based biometric and IRIS generation of Jeevan Pramaan at branches. Pensioners who want a digital record but do not own equipment. Successful authentication is required; carry the identifiers listed below.
Personal digital generation Use a registered biometric device or IRIS scanner with a computer, laptop or mobile device, compatible software and connectivity. SBI describes this route for generating a certificate away from a branch. Pensioners or carers with supported equipment and reliable internet. SBI’s material does not require every pensioner to buy a scanner. Check current supported-device information before purchasing anything.
Doorstep collection or officer visit Request collection through the documented doorstep service, or notify the branch that illness or incapacity prevents attendance. SBI’s senior-citizen facilities document describes PSB Alliance Doorstep Banking collection and a branch-officer visit request supported by a medical certificate. Senior citizens and people unable to travel. Confirm local eligibility, availability, scheduling and any charge before relying on the service.

How to submit a paper life certificate at a branch

Before you go

  • Check that your pension-paying branch is the correct Pension Disbursing Agency for the account.
  • Ask the branch which prescribed form and identification it currently accepts.
  • Confirm whether your category requires physical submission even if digital Jeevan Pramaan is available to other pensioners.
  • Plan for November rather than waiting for a reminder after payments are affected.

At the branch

  1. Complete the prescribed life-certificate form with your pension and personal details.
  2. Present or deliver it to the branch counter or officer designated for pension services.
  3. Ask for an acknowledgement, stamped copy or other receipt showing the date of submission.
  4. Keep that evidence with your pension records until the certificate is reflected in your account and for the rest of the financial year.

SBI’s public material establishes that a branch can accept a physical certificate, but it does not set one universal list of supporting documents for every pension category. The branch may request identification, the Pension Payment Order (PPO) details or account information, so verify the local checklist in advance.

How branch-assisted Jeevan Pramaan works

SBI documents Aadhaar-based biometric authentication at a branch, using either a fingerprint or an IRIS scan. The process creates a Digital Life Certificate and a unique Pramaan ID that serves as the acknowledgement of successful generation.

Information to carry

SBI’s procedure says the pensioner provides:

  • Aadhaar number
  • Mobile number
  • Pension Payment Order (PPO) number
  • Pension account number

Branch steps

  1. Tell the branch that you want to generate a Digital Life Certificate through Jeevan Pramaan.
  2. Provide the Aadhaar, mobile, PPO and account details requested by the operator.
  3. Complete the fingerprint or IRIS authentication when prompted.
  4. Wait for the system to confirm successful authentication and generate the certificate.
  5. Record the unique Pramaan ID and retain any SMS, printout or electronic acknowledgement.

A failed biometric attempt does not prove that you are ineligible. Fingerprints may be difficult to read because of age, work, skin condition or equipment problems. Ask the operator whether an IRIS option is available, check that the Aadhaar and pension details match the record, and request a paper route or another authorised submission method if authentication cannot be completed.

Can you generate the certificate from home?

Yes, SBI describes a personal digital route, but it has technical prerequisites. You need a registered biometric device or IRIS scanner, suitable Jeevan Pramaan software, a computer, laptop or mobile device that the software supports, and a working internet connection. You must also complete the required Aadhaar-based authentication.

Practical preparation checklist

  • Confirm that the biometric device or IRIS scanner is currently supported and registered for Jeevan Pramaan.
  • Use the official software and follow its device-registration instructions.
  • Have your Aadhaar number, mobile number, PPO number and pension account number ready.
  • Check that the Aadhaar details and mobile number used for authentication correspond to your pension records where required.
  • Use a stable connection and allow the software to complete transmission before closing it.
  • Save the generated Pramaan ID and any confirmation message.

Buying equipment is optional, not a universal SBI requirement. A branch can generate the certificate for you, and a doorstep or officer-visit route may be more appropriate if mobility or technology is the main difficulty. The SBI material reviewed here does not identify a current scanner model list or guarantee that a particular retail device will work.

What if illness or incapacity prevents a branch visit?

SBI’s 2024 senior-citizen facilities document describes two assistance paths. First, it identifies life-certificate collection through PSB Alliance Doorstep Banking. Second, when serious illness or incapacity prevents the pensioner from appearing, the pensioner or representative may send an intimation to the officer in charge of the paying branch, supported by a medical certificate from a registered medical practitioner. The branch can then nominate an officer to visit the pensioner at home or in hospital.

How to request an officer visit

  1. Contact the paying branch and explain that the pensioner cannot attend because of serious illness or incapacity.
  2. Obtain a medical certificate from a registered medical practitioner describing the inability to appear.
  3. Submit the written intimation and medical certificate to the branch officer in charge.
  4. Ask how the visit will be scheduled and what identification the officer will need to see.
  5. Obtain a receipt or other confirmation after the certificate is collected.

The document also describes a free life-certificate collection service for senior citizens through the doorstep-banking arrangement. Treat that as a documented facility, not a guarantee that every branch offers identical coverage. Verify whether the service is operating in your area, whether you meet its senior-citizen or mobility criteria, how appointments are made and whether any charge applies to your specific request.

How the 2026 submission timing should be handled

The established recurring deadline is November each year. SBI’s reviewed documents do not provide the exact start and end dates for November 2026, and they do not establish a current extension. Do not infer the 2026 window from an old calendar or from another bank’s schedule.

In October or early November, contact the branch that pays your pension and ask:

  • the first and last date accepted for the current year;
  • whether your category must use a physical certificate, Jeevan Pramaan, HRMS or another route;
  • which documents and identifiers to bring;
  • whether doorstep collection or an officer visit is available locally; and
  • what to do if you will be outside India, in hospital or otherwise unable to submit during the normal window.

Use SBI’s current pension guidance or a direct branch confirmation for year-specific instructions. The general webpage used for the route information is marked last updated in 2019, while the senior-citizen facilities document is dated 2024; operational details can change even when the annual November requirement remains.

What to do if your pension is delayed after the deadline

Do not submit a second certificate blindly. First determine whether the certificate was accepted and linked to the correct PPO and account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the acknowledgement, stamped copy or Pramaan ID you received.
  2. Contact the pension-paying branch and ask whether the life certificate is visible in the pension system.
  3. Confirm that the Aadhaar, PPO and account details used for a digital submission were correct.
  4. If the branch cannot locate the record, ask which correction or resubmission method applies to your category.
  5. For an illness-related case, confirm that the medical certificate and officer-visit request were formally received.

Keep copies of every form, receipt, SMS and Pramaan ID. These records help the branch trace a missing or mislinked submission without forcing you to repeat an authentication or visit unnecessarily.

Choosing the least difficult compliant route

Choose physical submission when

  • You can safely reach the branch and prefer a paper process.
  • You are a re-employed pensioner or remarried family pensioner covered by SBI’s physical-submission instruction.
  • Biometric authentication repeatedly fails or you do not have supported equipment.

Choose branch-assisted Jeevan Pramaan when

  • You want a digital certificate but do not want to buy or maintain a scanner.
  • You can attend a branch and have the Aadhaar, PPO, account and mobile details required for authentication.

Consider home assistance when

  • Serious illness or incapacity makes travel unsafe or impossible.
  • You are eligible for the local doorstep-banking collection service.
  • A registered medical practitioner can provide the supporting certificate required for an officer visit.

For SBI staff pensioners, follow the October 2024 staff notice only if you are within its scope. Its HRMS video and Aadhaar Face RD instructions, including mandatory Aadhaar seeding in HRMS, should not be generalized to ordinary SBI pension accounts. Family pensioners covered by that notice are directed to a branch.

Bottom line for SBI pensioners

SBI pensioners should expect to submit a life certificate every November. The annual requirement can usually be met through a branch paper submission, branch-assisted Jeevan Pramaan or an eligible digital route from home. Senior citizens and people who cannot travel may be able to use doorstep collection or request an officer visit with medical evidence. Because the exact 2026 dates and category rules are not settled by the reviewed documents, confirm the current procedure with your pension-paying SBI branch before November and keep proof of submission.
