Yes—under U.S. federal tax rules, a mutual-fund capital-gain distribution is a long-term capital gain to you even if you never sold your fund shares. An allowable capital loss from a separate sale can generally offset that distribution when your capital gains and losses are netted on your tax return.
The distribution and the loss sale remain separate transactions. The distribution appears on Form 1099-DIV, while the harvested loss is reported from Form 1099-B through Form 8949 and Schedule D. Wash-sale rules, basis adjustments, loss limitations and the account type can change the result.

Why a mutual fund can produce a capital gain when you did not sell
A mutual fund is a regulated investment company that buys and sells securities inside the fund. When it realizes gains and distributes them to shareholders, the fund passes those gains through for tax purposes. Your tax event is the distribution or account credit, not a sale of your fund shares.

The distribution is long-term for you
The Internal Revenue Service instructs shareholders to “Consider capital gain distributions as long-term capital gains no matter how long you’ve owned shares of the mutual fund.” That character follows the fund’s qualifying capital-gain distribution. Buying the fund recently does not turn the distribution into short-term gain, and holding it for many years does not change the classification.
A capital-gain distribution is different from an ordinary dividend. Form 1099-DIV separates the amounts so that the capital-gain portion can be included in the capital-gain and capital-loss calculation.
How tax-loss harvesting offsets the distribution
Tax-loss harvesting is a separate transaction: you dispose of an investment for less than its tax basis and realize a capital loss. After applying any required wash-sale adjustment, that loss enters the same federal capital-gain/loss netting process as the mutual-fund distribution.
What gets netted
| Tax item | What creates it | Federal tax character | Primary reporting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mutual-fund capital-gain distribution | The fund realizes gains and pays or credits a distribution to you | Long-term capital gain, regardless of your fund-share holding period | Form 1099-DIV, box 2a; Schedule D line 13, or Form 1040/1040-SR line 7a when Schedule D is not otherwise required |
| Harvested capital loss | You sell or otherwise dispose of a security for less than its adjusted basis | Short-term or long-term according to your holding period, subject to wash-sale rules | Form 1099-B information, Form 8949, then Schedule D |
If your realized loss remains deductible, it can reduce the net capital gain that includes the fund distribution. The distribution itself is not a loss transaction, and it does not create a harvested loss merely because the fund’s share price falls afterward.

A loss must be realized
A decline shown on your account statement is not enough. You generally need an actual sale or other taxable disposition. Selling shares, recording the proceeds and basis, and reporting the transaction are what make the loss available for netting. A loss that is disallowed or deferred under the wash-sale rules is not currently available to offset the distribution.
Reporting the two transactions correctly
- Read Form 1099-DIV. Use box 2a for the mutual-fund capital-gain distribution. Do not move the amount into an ordinary-dividend field merely because the fund automatically reinvested it.
- Enter the distribution in the capital-gain section. The IRS’s current mutual-fund guidance and Publication 550 (2025) direct taxpayers to Schedule D line 13. If you are not otherwise required to file Schedule D, the amount can be reported on Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR line 7a as instructed for that filing year.
- Gather the loss-sale information. Use the Form 1099-B proceeds and basis information for the security you sold. Check whether the broker reported a wash-sale adjustment and whether your own records show additional replacement purchases.
- Complete Form 8949 when required. Report the sale, correct any basis or adjustment information, and carry the resulting short-term or long-term loss to Schedule D.
- Net gains and losses on Schedule D. The distribution and the allowable loss are combined under the applicable federal ordering rules. Any remaining net gain is taxed according to its character; any net loss is subject to the applicable capital-loss limitations and carryover rules.
- Retain basis records. Mutual funds may use permitted cost-basis methods, including average basis in circumstances allowed by the IRS. Keep purchase, sale, distribution and reinvestment records rather than relying only on a year-end account balance.
Brokerage reporting can omit or misstate basis for older lots, transferred shares or reinvested amounts. Compare the 1099-B with your own lot records before accepting an automatically prepared return.
Wash-sale rules are the main harvesting hazard
The wash-sale rule can defer a loss when you sell a security at a loss and acquire substantially identical securities during the period beginning 30 days before the sale and ending 30 days after it. That is a 61-day window centered on the loss-sale date.
What happens to a disallowed loss
The loss is not permanently erased. The disallowed amount is added to the basis of the replacement shares, generally postponing recognition until those shares are later disposed of in a transaction that is not itself a wash sale. The replacement shares also have their own acquisition date and holding-period consequences.

Does receiving a distribution create a wash sale?
No. A capital-gain distribution is income, not a loss disposition, so receiving it by itself is not a wash sale. The wash-sale question arises from a separate loss sale and a purchase of substantially identical securities.
Can reinvestment matter?
Yes. When a fund automatically reinvests a distribution, the reinvestment generally buys additional shares. If you also sell substantially identical shares at a loss, an automatic purchase inside the 30-day-before or 30-day-after window may be relevant to the wash-sale analysis. Review the actual reinvestment date and share lot, rather than assuming that an automatic election is ignored.
Reinvesting does not make the distribution tax-free
Whether the fund sends cash or reinvests the amount, the original capital-gain distribution generally remains taxable income in a taxable account. Reinvestment means the distributed amount is used to acquire additional shares; it does not cancel the distribution reported in box 2a.

Planning choices around a fund distribution
Investors usually weigh the tax result, timing, records and desired market exposure together. The right choice depends on the facts of the account and the investment strategy; no option eliminates the need to report the distribution.
| Approach | Tax result | Timing and wash-sale issue | Recordkeeping focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep the fund and accept the distribution | Report the long-term capital-gain distribution | No loss sale, so no wash-sale analysis from this choice alone | 1099-DIV box 2a and any reinvested-share lots |
| Sell another investment at a loss | An allowable realized loss may offset the distribution in netting | Check purchases of substantially identical securities 30 days before and after the loss sale | 1099-B, basis, Form 8949 adjustments and Schedule D |
| Sell the fund at a loss and buy a different investment | The realized loss may be usable if not disallowed | Determine whether the replacement is substantially identical; a different fund is not automatically safe or unsafe under every fact pattern | Document the sold lot, replacement security and dates |
| Wait outside the wash-sale window before repurchasing | Preserves the loss if all other requirements are met | Requires avoiding substantially identical acquisitions for the full 30-day-before/30-day-after period | Calendar the window and monitor automatic purchases and other accounts |
A temporary move to cash or a different exposure can change market risk. Tax savings should not be considered separately from the possibility that the investment rises while you are out of the original position.

Assume a mutual fund reports a $4,000 capital-gain distribution in box 2a. You did not sell any fund shares, and the fund reinvested the $4,000 into additional shares. The $4,000 is still reported as a long-term capital gain, and the reinvested shares receive a separate basis and acquisition date.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDuring the same tax year, you sell unrelated stock for a $2,500 loss. You make no substantially identical purchase during the applicable wash-sale window, so the loss remains allowable. The $2,500 loss can generally reduce the net capital gain that includes the $4,000 distribution, leaving a $1,500 net capital-gain amount before considering any other gains, losses or applicable limitations.

Now change the facts: you buy substantially identical replacement shares 10 days after the stock loss sale. The wash-sale rule can defer the loss, so the $2,500 may not be available currently to offset the distribution. Instead, the disallowed amount is added to the replacement shares’ basis under the rule.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- “I never sold, so there is no tax.” A fund-level sale followed by a distribution can create taxable capital-gain income without a shareholder sale.
- Reporting box 2a as ordinary dividends. Use the capital-gain distribution field and the Schedule D or Form 1040/1040-SR line specified for your filing situation.
- Assuming reinvestment is tax-free. Reinvestment purchases shares; it does not remove the original distribution from income.
- Ignoring automatic purchases. Reinvested distributions, dividend elections and purchases in another account can fall inside a wash-sale window.
- Using an unrealized loss. A price decline is not a deductible loss until a sale or other disposition occurs.
- Accepting an incorrect basis. Verify transferred lots, inherited shares, older purchases and reinvested lots against your records.
- Forgetting account type and jurisdiction. These rules describe U.S. federal taxation. State rules, tax-exempt accounts, personal capital-loss carryforwards, the net investment income tax and fund-specific accounting can change the outcome.
A practical year-end checklist
- Download every Form 1099-DIV and identify box 2a amounts.
- List each security sale that may produce a loss, including the sale date, proceeds, adjusted basis and holding period.
- Search all taxable accounts for purchases of the same or substantially identical security during the 30-day lookback and look-forward periods.
- Include automatic reinvestments and purchases made by a spouse or another account when applicable to your facts.
- Reconcile broker-reported wash-sale adjustments with your own lot history.
- Enter distributions and sales on the appropriate forms, then review Schedule D totals and any resulting carryover.
- Keep statements showing the distribution, reinvestment lots, sale confirmations and basis calculations.
When professional review is worthwhile
Consider a qualified tax professional when you have multiple brokerages, substantially identical funds, transferred or inherited lots, sales in an IRA or other tax-exempt account, a large carryforward, or uncertainty about whether two investments are substantially identical. The federal framework is categorical, but the application depends on transaction dates, basis records, account ownership and the tax year’s forms.
The IRS sources that set out these mechanics are the Mutual funds (costs, distributions, etc.) FAQ and Publication 550 (2025), including the 30-day wash-sale periods and reporting treatment. Use the instructions for the tax year you are filing because form lines and reporting requirements can change.
