1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose a direct plan when you can select and monitor funds yourself, or when you are willing to pay a registered investment adviser separately. Choose a regular plan when a mutual fund distributor’s assistance is worth the ongoing distribution cost to you. Both plans belong to the same mutual fund scheme, use the same portfolio and fund manager, and differ mainly in how they are distributed and what the scheme spends on that distribution. The practical decision is therefore about cost, capability and service—not about choosing between two different portfolios.
Direct and regular plans are two versions of the same scheme
A mutual fund scheme can offer a Direct Plan and a Regular Plan. The underlying securities, investment mandate and fund manager are the same for both plans of that scheme. Your plan choice does not create a separate portfolio.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The difference appears in the route through which you invest and in the scheme’s expenses. A regular plan is bought through a mutual fund distributor or another intermediary channel. A direct plan is bought without distributor intermediation. Because the expenses differ, each plan has its own net asset value (NAV), even though both NAVs represent units in the same scheme portfolio.

| Decision point | Direct Plan | Regular Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Portfolio and fund manager | Same scheme portfolio and manager as the regular plan | Same scheme portfolio and manager as the direct plan |
| Distribution expenses | Lower total expense ratio (TER) because distributor-related expenses and commission are excluded | TER includes distribution-related expenses; the asset management company (AMC) pays distributor commission within applicable expense limits |
| Investor’s role | Selects and executes investments independently, or obtains separately paid advice | Uses a mutual fund distributor for the transaction and any service that distributor provides |
| Typical access routes | AMC websites, exchange platforms, MFU, other digital channels and physical forms described by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) | Distributor or another intermediary channel |
| Best fit | Someone able to research, choose and maintain a portfolio | Someone who values distributor assistance and accepts its cost |
The labels alone do not tell you how much personal guidance you will receive. A regular-plan distributor may provide substantial planning and review, limited transaction help, or something in between. Ask what service is actually included rather than assuming that every distributor operates in the same way.

Why the direct plan usually has a lower cost
TER is the operating expense of a mutual fund scheme expressed as a percentage of its assets. Expenses are deducted within the scheme, so the NAV disclosed each day is after those expenses have been deducted. AMFI explains that a lower TER has a bearing on NAV because less of the scheme’s assets are used to pay operating and distribution costs.
For the same scheme, the direct plan’s TER is generally lower because it does not include distributor distribution expenses or commission. The regular plan’s TER includes those distribution-related costs, subject to the applicable expense-ratio limits. The difference is not a universal percentage. It varies by scheme and can change over time as assets, expenses and regulatory limits change.
Compare the current direct and regular TER for the exact scheme you are considering. AMFI’s TER information is disclosed daily, so an old comparison or a figure copied from an unrelated fund can mislead you. Look at the scheme’s current disclosure and note the date on which each TER applies.
How a small annual difference affects your investment
TER is charged against scheme assets rather than billed to you as a separate invoice. A higher TER leaves less of the scheme’s gross return reflected in the NAV. The effect compounds because the amount that remains invested is also smaller after each period’s expenses.
This does not mean a direct plan guarantees a higher personal return. Your outcome still depends on the scheme you select, market performance, taxes, transaction decisions, the time you remain invested and whether you follow a suitable plan. A direct plan in an unsuitable scheme can be a worse decision than a regular plan in a suitable scheme with valuable support.
What you pay for in a regular plan
In a regular plan, the AMC pays the distributor’s commission from the scheme’s permitted expense structure. This is not necessarily a separate bill that you pay directly to the distributor every month. AMFI says the commission is paid by the AMC within applicable expense-ratio limits.

The cost is visible indirectly through the regular plan’s TER and NAV. AMFI also says that the half-yearly consolidated account statement (CAS) discloses the actual commissions paid in absolute terms. Reviewing that statement can help you understand the rupee amount associated with distribution for your holdings.
Evaluate the commission-related cost against the service you receive. Useful service might include helping you identify a suitable category, completing documentation, explaining scheme disclosures, coordinating transactions and reviewing whether your holdings still fit your objectives. Do not pay for an assumed service that is not actually delivered, and do not infer that a lower-cost channel provides advice merely because its interface is convenient.
Direct plan does not mean you must make every decision alone
AMFI describes a direct plan as suitable for an investor who can research and select schemes and complete the investment independently. If you want professional advice but do not want distributor-based remuneration, AMFI says you may use a registered investment adviser and pay that adviser a fee separately.
That arrangement has three distinct components:
- Investment product: the direct-plan units in the mutual fund scheme.
- Execution: the channel through which you submit purchases, redemptions or other transactions.
- Advice: a separately contracted service from a registered investment adviser, with its own fee and disclosures.
The adviser’s fee is not included in the direct plan’s TER. Include it in your personal cost comparison. A direct plan plus an advisory fee can still be appropriate if the advice improves fund selection, portfolio construction or investor discipline, but the fee must be assessed separately from scheme expenses.
Execution platforms and advice are different services
A digital platform that lets you transact is not automatically an adviser. AMFI’s Category-1 execution-only platform framework describes platforms that facilitate direct-plan transactions. Under that framework, these platforms do not provide regular plans. Their transaction capability should not be treated as evidence of personalised investment advice.
Before using any platform, check its current status, the plans it makes available, transaction charges, account-opening requirements, support arrangements and disclosures. A platform may simplify execution while leaving scheme selection and portfolio monitoring entirely to you. If you need recommendations tailored to your circumstances, look for a separately identified, appropriately registered advisory service rather than relying on a transaction interface.

A practical decision framework
Answer the following questions before choosing a plan.
1. Can you evaluate a scheme without distributor help?
You should be able to understand the scheme’s objective, risk description, portfolio, costs, investment horizon and role in your overall allocation. You also need a process for deciding whether to continue, increase, reduce or redeem the holding. If you cannot do this confidently, the lower TER of a direct plan may not compensate for avoidable selection or monitoring mistakes.
2. Will you actually maintain the investment?
Independent execution includes completing forms correctly, keeping bank and contact details updated, checking transaction confirmations and reviewing statements. If you are likely to postpone these tasks or make reactive decisions during market volatility, a distributor’s operational support may have value.
3. What service will the distributor provide?
Ask for a clear description of the service and how often it is delivered. Find out whether the distributor helps with scheme selection, asset allocation, reviews, paperwork and problem resolution, or mainly processes transactions. Compare that service with the additional TER you will bear over your expected holding period.
4. Would separate advice suit you better?
If you want personalised recommendations but prefer to hold direct plans, investigate a registered investment adviser’s registration, scope of service, fee schedule, conflicts and review process. The advice fee is separate from the mutual fund’s TER, so compare the combined cost with the service you would receive through a regular plan.
5. Have you checked the current TER?
Open the current disclosure for the exact scheme and record the direct and regular TER on the same date. Do not use a generic “direct plans are cheaper by X%” rule. The difference is scheme-specific and may change.

When a direct plan is usually a sensible fit
- You understand fund categories and can match a scheme to your objective and time horizon.
- You can read the scheme’s current documents and compare TER, risk information and portfolio details.
- You are comfortable executing transactions through an AMC website, exchange channel, MFU, another direct-plan platform or physical forms.
- You can monitor your allocation and rebalance or change contributions according to a written process.
- You either do not need personalised advice or have arranged it separately with a registered investment adviser.
For this investor, avoiding distributor-related expenses may improve the amount of return retained in the NAV, provided the same suitable scheme and a disciplined process are used.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallWhen a regular plan may justify its higher TER
- You are new to mutual funds and want help understanding scheme choices and documents.
- You have several goals or accounts and want assistance coordinating them.
- You prefer a human contact for applications, changes, statements or service issues.
- You know that you are unlikely to research and monitor investments consistently on your own.
- The distributor’s actual service is clear, ongoing and valuable enough to justify its cost.
A regular plan is not automatically better for an inexperienced investor, and it is not automatically poor value. Its justification depends on the quality and relevance of the service, not on the plan label alone.
How to choose a direct plan step by step
- Define the job for the investment. Write down the goal, approximate time horizon, contribution pattern and level of loss you can tolerate.
- Shortlist schemes within the relevant category. Read the current scheme documents and confirm that the objective and risk profile match the job you defined.
- Identify the plan correctly. Select the option explicitly marked “Direct Plan” and confirm the associated option, such as growth or income distribution, before submitting an order.
- Check the live TER. Compare the direct TER with the regular TER for the same scheme on the current disclosure date.
- Choose an execution route. AMFI describes AMC websites, exchange platforms, MFU, other digital channels and physical forms as available routes; verify the present features and charges of the route you select.
- Set up monitoring. Keep transaction records, review statements and set dates to reassess the scheme against your objective rather than reacting to every short-term market move.
How to choose a regular plan step by step
- Describe the help you need. Decide whether you need education, scheme selection, goal planning, administration, periodic reviews or all of these.
- Ask the distributor to explain the service. Request the frequency of contact, the decisions they will help with and the support available when you transact or update your account.
- Confirm the plan and scheme. Check that the application identifies the intended Regular Plan, scheme option and folio details.
- Compare current costs. Record the regular TER and the direct TER for the same scheme. Treat the difference as the scheme-level cost of the distribution arrangement, not as a separate guaranteed invoice.
- Review disclosures. Read the scheme documents, account statements and the half-yearly CAS. Use the CAS commission disclosure to understand the absolute amount paid for distribution in your holdings.
- Reassess service value. If the promised assistance is not being delivered, ask the distributor about the gap and review the available plan and advice arrangements before making any change.
How to compare the two plans without being misled
| Check | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Scheme identity | Same fund house, scheme, option and plan variant | A TER comparison across different schemes says nothing about the direct-versus-regular choice. |
| Current TER | Direct and regular TER disclosed for the same date | TER is variable; an old or generic number may no longer apply. |
| Portfolio | Underlying portfolio and fund manager | The plan choice does not create a different investment mandate. |
| Service | Specific tasks, frequency and support included | Regular-plan value depends on the service actually received. |
| Advice arrangement | Whether recommendations come from a distributor, a registered investment adviser or no adviser | Execution convenience is not proof of personalised advice. |
| Total personal cost | TER difference plus any separately paid advisory or platform fees | A direct plan’s lower TER does not include an advice fee you choose to pay. |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming the plans hold different investments
They are plans of the same scheme. Verify the scheme and option before comparing performance or NAV; a different NAV does not prove a different portfolio.
Using a permanent TER difference
TER changes with scheme conditions and disclosures. Check the current figures each time you make a material decision.
Treating direct as “free advice”
Direct-plan execution does not include personalised advice. If you need advice, arrange it separately and include its fee in your budget.

Calling the commission a separate monthly bill
AMFI explains that the AMC pays distributor commission within applicable expense-ratio limits. The cost is reflected in scheme expenses and can be reviewed through TER information and the commission disclosure in the half-yearly CAS.
Choosing a platform because it looks like an adviser
Confirm whether the service is execution-only. Category-1 execution-only platforms described by AMFI facilitate direct-plan transactions and do not provide regular plans under that framework.
Changing from one plan to the other
Do not treat a plan change as a simple label edit. Ask the AMC or your intermediary how the proposed change will be processed, which forms or instructions are required, and what account or transaction consequences apply. Before acting, review the current scheme documents and obtain advice on any tax or transaction implications relevant to your circumstances. The appropriate route can depend on the scheme, the platform and your account setup.

AMFI reported 306 investor-awareness programs with 68,325 participants for the financial year ended March 31, 2025. AMFI also reported 14,749 asset-management-company programs with 1,148,219 participants across India in that financial year. These figures indicate the scale of awareness activity; they do not measure the return difference between direct and regular plans and should not be used as evidence that one plan will outperform the other for a particular investor.
The bottom line for your choice
Start with the service you need, then price it accurately. If you can select and manage a suitable scheme independently, a direct plan generally removes distributor-related expenses and gives you the lower current TER of the two plans. If you want distributor assistance and the specific service is worth its cost, a regular plan can be reasonable. If you want advice but prefer direct-plan execution, consider a direct plan with a separately paid registered investment adviser. In every case, compare the current TER for the same scheme, verify the actual service arrangement and avoid treating cost alone as a substitute for sound fund selection and disciplined investing.
