There is no single, official list of exactly 40 digital-nomad-visa countries. The “40 countries” figure is a useful headline, but the number changes with the definition and date. A tracker checked on 29 September 2026 reported 55 schemes in 53 countries, while its summary marked 48 schemes open; the same page’s methodology referred to 46 open records. Treat those figures as a dated secondary snapshot, not a permanent government total. Before paying a fee or booking travel, check the issuing authority’s current rules for your passport, income, work arrangement and intended stay.
Why “40 countries” is not a fixed number
Digital-nomad immigration programs are counted differently. One database may include only dedicated residence visas for remote workers. Another may add permits that are technically residence permissions rather than visas, general self-employment routes, tourism workation programs, announced schemes, or multiple routes in one country. Some countries allow remote work under an existing status without creating a dedicated nomad visa.

The tracker checked on 29 September 2026 counted 55 schemes across 53 countries. Its summary said 48 were open, but its method section described 46 open records. Because those two open totals conflict, the safest way to cite the page is to use the consistent scheme and country counts and describe individual status labels rather than present one “global total.” The tracker also warns that rules can change without notice and that some official sites block automated readers.

For a reader, the practical question is not whether a destination appears in a list of 40. It is whether a specific route is accepting applications now, accepts your nationality, permits your type of remote work, and gives you a stay that fits your plans.
Understand the status before treating a country as an option
| Status | What it means for a traveler | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Open | An authority describes an application route, but approval is still discretionary. | Current form, appointment rules, fee, documents and processing location. |
| Announced or authorized | A law, executive order or government announcement exists, but operating instructions may not. | Whether applications, forms and implementing rules have actually been published. |
| Unclear | Public information is incomplete, contradictory or not recently updated. | A written confirmation from the responsible immigration office. |
| Suspended or ended | The program may no longer accept applications even if old webpages remain online. | Replacement routes and the date on which the suspension applies. |
| No dedicated scheme | The country may still permit remote work through another immigration category, but it is not counted as a nomad visa under a narrow definition. | The exact legal status that would authorize your stay and work. |
EY’s March 2026 review shows why these distinctions matter. It reported that Grenada’s remote employment permit had not begun accepting applications; the Philippines had announced a visa but still lacked implementing rules as of February 2026; Aruba’s “One Happy Workation” was a tourism promotion without specific digital-nomad immigration legislation; and Bahamas, Bermuda and Cayman programs were reported suspended or ended. Those were dated findings, not guarantees of their status today.
The comparison points that determine whether a visa is usable
Compare the legal conditions, not just the destination’s popularity or a headline stay length. The following questions expose most deal-breakers:
| Decision point | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Passport | Is your nationality eligible, and must you be visa-exempt or apply from a particular country? |
| Work relationship | Does the route cover an employee, contractor, business owner or self-employed applicant? |
| Clients and employer | Must the employer or clients be outside the destination? Are local clients or local employment prohibited? |
| Financial proof | What income, salary, savings or bank-balance test applies, and which months or years must be documented? |
| Insurance | Is health, hospitalization, evacuation or full-period coverage required? |
| Application logistics | Can you apply abroad, in-country, online or only at a consulate? Which entry status allows an in-country application? |
| Stay and renewal | How long is the initial permission, can it be extended, and is renewal available? |
| Family | Can a spouse or children receive dependent status, and do they need separate financial evidence? |
| Tax and residence | Could the stay create tax residence, payroll obligations or social-security exposure? |
A blank field in a tracker does not prove that a requirement is absent. If an authority does not clearly state a rule, treat it as unresolved rather than assume it is permissive.

Concrete official requirements from two operating routes
Taiwan: nationality, salary history and a six-month bank test
Taiwan’s Bureau of Consular Affairs page, updated 7 August 2026, says only nationals of visa-exempt countries may apply for its digital-nomad route. Applicants must document remote-work experience and meet one of the specified prior digital-nomad-visa or age-based salary conditions. Applicants aged 30 or older must show at least US$40,000 in annual salary in one of the previous two years. Applicants aged 20 to 29 must show at least US$20,000 in annual salary in one of the previous two years.
The same page requires an average bank balance of at least US$10,000 for each month during the previous six months, plus health and full-hospitalization insurance for the entire intended stay. The application path differs depending on whether you apply outside Taiwan or are already there under one of the specified entry categories. Taiwan’s authority says it may refuse an application without explanation and that the fee is nonrefundable, so eligibility evidence should be assembled before submission.
Japan: six months, no renewal and no Japanese contracts
Japan’s Immigration Services Agency describes a designated-activities status for qualifying remote work for an organization established under foreign law or for services and sales to people outside Japan. The permission allows a stay of up to six months and cannot be renewed. Medical insurance covering death, injury and illness for the full stay is required.

What the Philippines example teaches about announced visas
Philippine Executive Order No. 86 authorizes digital-nomad visas for qualifying nonimmigrant foreigners who work remotely for clients or employers situated outside the Philippines. However, EY reported in February 2026 that implementing rules had not yet been issued. The order therefore established authority for a program but did not, by itself, prove that an applicant could submit a complete application at that time.
The same logic applies to any of the 40-plus destinations: find the operational form, documentary checklist, fee instructions and designated receiving office. A press release, executive order or tourism webpage is not a substitute for an application procedure.
Eligibility evidence you should prepare
Passport and age
Nationality can be decisive. Taiwan limits applications to nationals of visa-exempt countries, and its salary alternatives change at age 30. Do not infer eligibility from residence in a third country; authorities usually assess the passport you will use.
Recommended Free Tools
Employment, contracts and client location
Collect an employment letter or contracts identifying the foreign employer or clients, your role, compensation and the location of the contracting entity. A route that allows foreign employment may still prohibit local employment or local-client contracts. If you are self-employed, look for an explicit definition of acceptable business activity instead of assuming that “remote worker” includes every form of freelancing.
Rank #4
Income, savings and period covered
Read the measurement period precisely. Taiwan combines salary earned in one of the previous two years with an average monthly bank-balance test covering six previous months. Other routes may use monthly income, annual income, savings or a combination. Bank statements should show the account holder, currency, dates and balances; unexplained deposits can create questions even when the headline amount is met.
Insurance
Check whether the policy must cover the whole approved stay and whether it must include hospitalization, illness, injury, death or evacuation. Japan expressly requires coverage for death, injury and illness for the full six-month period. A policy that starts after arrival or excludes a required benefit may not satisfy the authority.
Application location and supporting records
Some routes require an overseas consular application; others allow an in-country filing only from specified entry categories. Prepare passport validity evidence, photographs, proof of accommodation if requested, criminal-record documents where required, work evidence, financial statements and translations or apostilles when specified. Do not buy a nonrefundable flight or lease until the authority confirms that your application route is available.

- Identify the legal instrument. Find the immigration authority’s page for a dedicated nomad visa, remote-worker permit or the alternative status that actually authorizes your stay.
- Check status and date. Confirm that applications are being accepted now, not merely announced, promoted or described in an old article.
- Test passport eligibility. Read nationality, visa-exemption, age and application-location clauses before gathering expensive documents.
- Match your work model. Determine whether your employer, clients and contracts are outside the destination and whether local work is excluded.
- Calculate the financial test. Recreate the authority’s formula using the stated currency, months, years, salary and savings evidence.
- Buy compliant insurance. Match coverage dates and benefits to the legal wording, then retain the certificate and policy schedule.
- Map the whole stay. Record initial validity, extension deadlines, renewal limits, re-entry rules and dependent permissions.
- Check tax separately. Ask a qualified adviser how days in-country, payroll, business activity and treaty rules affect you; a visa approval does not determine your tax result.
- Confirm directly before payment. Send unresolved questions to the issuing authority and save the response with the date and officer or office identified.
Stay length, renewal and family planning
Longer validity is not automatically better. A route may grant a year but require a new application, while Japan grants up to six months and bars renewal. A nonrenewable permission can work for a defined project but is unsuitable if you need to remain continuously in one country.

Dependent rules are country-specific and were not established uniformly across the destinations in the available material. Ask whether dependents receive the same end date, whether they may work, and whether additional income or insurance is required. Never assume that a spouse or child is covered by the principal applicant’s approval.
Fees, processing and refusal risk
There is no universal digital-nomad-visa fee or processing time. Amounts can vary by nationality, consular post, exchange rate and whether dependents apply. Taiwan states that its fee is nonrefundable and that the authority may refuse an application without explanation. Budget for document translation, legalization, insurance, travel to the filing location and possible repeat applications, but obtain the current amount from the authority rather than relying on a comparison table copied from an older year.
Tax and local-work boundaries
Immigration permission and tax residence are separate systems. A visa can authorize physical presence without deciding whether you become tax resident, owe local income tax, trigger employer withholding or create social-security obligations. The answer can depend on day counts, a tax treaty, where your employer is established, where services are performed and whether you operate a business. Obtain destination-specific tax advice before treating a visa as a tax strategy.
Work location also matters. Japan’s route is designed around foreign-law organizations and customers outside Japan and excludes contracts with Japanese institutions. The Philippines order similarly describes remote work for foreign clients or employers. These examples show why “I work online” is not enough: the contracting parties and legal source of income are part of eligibility.
How to decide among apparently eligible countries
| If your priority is… | Give greatest weight to… | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| A short project | Simple filing, insurance period and a clear maximum stay. | A route that cannot be renewed when your project may run longer. |
| Staying with a family | Dependent eligibility, schooling implications and matching permit dates. | “Family allowed” language without work rights or separate financial rules. |
| Freelancing | Definitions of self-employment and the location of clients. | A route limited to employees of foreign companies. |
| Predictable budgeting | Published fees, processing steps, insurance requirements and refund rules. | Unclear status or a nonrefundable fee before eligibility is confirmed. |
| Frequent travel | Multiple-entry and re-entry conditions, not only the initial validity. | A permission that ends when you leave or requires a new filing abroad. |
What is still not known globally
No robust, comparable official figure for worldwide digital-nomad-visa uptake or program outcomes was established in the available material. Country counts should not be presented as proof that a route is popular, successful or economically beneficial. They describe how many schemes a particular tracker identified under its own scope on a particular date.
The 40-country framing is therefore best used as a starting shortlist. Narrow it to routes with a current official application path, then compare nationality, work restrictions, financial proof, insurance, stay, renewal, family and tax consequences one country at a time.
