Digital Life Certificate Options Compared: IPPB, Jeevan Pramaan, and a Bank Visit

Yes, you can usually submit a digital life certificate without travelling to your bank. The practical choice depends on whether your pension authority supports Jeevan Pramaan, whether you need assisted doorstep service, and whether you already have compatible biometric equipment. India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) offers assisted generation for a stated ₹70 per successful certificate, while Jeevan Pramaan centres and pension-disbursing offices may generate it for you. A bank visit remains possible, but each bank and branch sets its own process.

Which route should you choose?

Start by identifying the authority that sanctions your pension (the Pension Sanctioning Authority, or PSA) and the agency that pays it (the Pension Disbursing Agency, or PDA). Jeevan Pramaan works only when the relevant PSA is onboarded on the digital-life-certificate system and the PDA can receive and process the certificate. If that eligibility check passes, use the route that best fits your access to a post office, a nearby centre, a bank office, or a supported biometric setup.

  • Choose IPPB assistance if you want an operator to complete the process at a post office or, where available, at your home.
  • Choose a Jeevan Pramaan centre or PDA office if a Common Service Centre (CSC), bank, post office, or treasury office is more convenient.
  • Choose self-generation only if you can arrange STQC-certified biometric hardware, its working RD service, the current application, and reliable internet.
  • Ask your bank first when your pension account has a branch-specific life-certificate procedure or when your authority is not available through Jeevan Pramaan.

Do not assume that a certificate generated electronically is automatically approved. The PDA still checks the record, and the authority determines how long the certificate remains valid.

At-a-glance comparison

Route How it works Stated cost or requirement Best fit
IPPB post office or doorstep An IPPB operator generates the Digital Life Certificate (DLC) for you. Request assistance at a post office or ask for a postman or Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) visit, subject to local availability. IPPB lists ₹70 for each successful DLC, inclusive of GST and CESS, with no additional doorstep charge. Confirm current service availability before relying on a visit. Pensioners who want assisted service and may have difficulty travelling or using biometric software.
Jeevan Pramaan centre or PDA office An operator enters your pension details and you complete Aadhaar-based fingerprint or iris authentication. Centres include CSCs and offices of banks, post offices, and treasuries. The cited official material does not establish one uniform centre fee. Ask the centre or agency before travelling. Anyone who can reach a nearby authorised operator.
Self-generation You enter pension information in the official Jeevan Pramaan application and authenticate with a supported biometric device. Requires an STQC-certified biometric device, the device’s RD service, the application, and internet. Hardware and compatibility must be checked before purchase. Users who already have suitable equipment and can troubleshoot setup issues.
Bank visit You ask the pension-disbursing bank or branch whether it generates DLC or accepts another approved life-certificate process for your pension account. Procedure, appointment rules, charges, and service levels are not standardised in the official material cited here. Pensioners whose bank offers a convenient in-branch service or whose authority requires direct bank handling.

Eligibility: check this before making a trip

Your pension authority must be onboarded

The official Jeevan Pramaan FAQ says a pensioner is eligible when the Pension Sanctioning Authority is onboarded. The pension disbursing agency must also be live on the DLC system so it can receive and process the record. Use the live authority and centre information on the Jeevan Pramaan portal, or ask your PDA, before choosing a digital route.

Important exclusions

The FAQ states that re-employed and remarried pensioners are not eligible for Jeevan Pramaan. Those pensioners should follow the life-certificate rules given by their own sanctioning or disbursing authority instead of assuming that a biometric DLC will be accepted.

Validity is set by your authority

A DLC is not valid for life. Its validity period is set by the Pension Sanctioning Authority. There is no single deadline that applies to every pension scheme, so check the date shown in your certificate or confirm the renewal window with the PDA. When the period expires, you need a new certificate and a new Pramaan ID.

How to use IPPB’s assisted service

What IPPB provides

IPPB describes its DLC service as available to both IPPB customers and non-customers. You can approach a post office or request a doorstep visit by a postman or GDS. The operator performs the Jeevan Pramaan generation and biometric authentication; you do not need to buy a scanner for this route.

Prepare these details

  • Aadhaar number.
  • An existing mobile number for authentication and acknowledgement messages.
  • Confirmation that your Aadhaar is registered with the pension disbursing agency.
  • Pension Payment Order (PPO) number.
  • Pension type.
  • Name of the Pension Sanctioning Authority.
  • Name of the Pension Disbursing Agency.
  • Pension account number.

IPPB says prior-year information may be auto-populated, but keep your current records available in case an entry must be corrected.

Request and complete the visit

  1. Contact the post office or the available IPPB channel and ask specifically for Digital Life Certificate generation.
  2. Confirm that your PSA and PDA are supported and that a local operator or doorstep slot is available.
  3. Give the operator your pension and Aadhaar details and complete the requested fingerprint or iris authentication.
  4. Pay the stated ₹70 charge for a successful generation. IPPB’s service page says this amount includes GST and CESS and that no separate doorstep charge is added.
  5. Collect or note the Pramaan ID and wait for the SMS acknowledgement. Check the certificate status rather than treating the generation attempt itself as final approval.

The ₹70 figure is a service price listed by IPPB on 13 October 2026, not a permanent national tariff. Local slots, operator coverage, and prices can change, so confirm before scheduling.

How a Jeevan Pramaan centre or PDA office works

Find a centre

The Jeevan Pramaan portal’s centre locator lets you search by location, state, district, or PIN code. The official FAQ also gives an SMS method: send JPL, followed by a space and your PIN code, to 7738299899. Call or otherwise confirm that the centre is operating, supports your pension authority, and can handle your case before travelling.

What happens at the counter

  1. Give the operator your Aadhaar or Virtual ID and the pension details requested by the application.
  2. Provide the PPO number, pension type, sanctioning authority, disbursing agency, and pension account information accurately.
  3. Authenticate biometrically with your fingerprint or iris, as the equipment permits.
  4. Review the acknowledgement and retain the unique Pramaan ID sent by SMS.
  5. Download the certificate later to see whether the PDA has accepted or rejected it.

The portal describes the sequence as submitting pension information, authenticating biometrically, and sharing the DLC electronically with the disbursing agency. Because the record is transmitted electronically, the FAQ says you do not need to hand a paper copy to the PDA separately. Electronic delivery does not remove the PDA’s approval step.

Self-generation: equipment, software, and setup

Required components

  • An STQC-certified biometric device.
  • The device’s registered-device (RD) service installed and functioning.
  • The current Jeevan Pramaan application for your supported computer or mobile configuration.
  • Internet access during submission and authentication.
  • Aadhaar or Virtual ID and complete pension details.

Certification alone is not enough. A scanner must also have an RD service compatible with the current Jeevan Pramaan application and operating system. Check compatibility and support status before buying hardware; the official material does not establish a specific model or retailer as necessary.

Generation sequence

  1. Install the official application and the biometric device’s RD service from the authorised sources for your device.
  2. Connect the scanner and verify that the application detects it before entering a full pension record.
  3. Enter Aadhaar or Virtual ID and the pension details requested on screen.
  4. Capture the fingerprint or iris scan and complete the authentication response.
  5. Save the Pramaan ID and SMS acknowledgement.
  6. Download the certificate and check its status with the PDA. A successful biometric transaction is not the same as approval.

When self-generation is a poor choice

Do not buy equipment simply to avoid a single journey if an IPPB visit or nearby centre is available. Setup failures can arise from an unsupported operating system, a stopped RD service, an uncertified scanner, a poor-quality fingerprint, or a pension authority that is not onboarded. Assisted generation usually removes those technical dependencies.

What happens after submission?

Pramaan ID and electronic delivery

A successful generation creates a unique Pramaan ID, and the system sends an acknowledgement by SMS. The DLC is made available electronically to the PDA, so a separate physical submission is generally unnecessary under the official FAQ. Keep the ID and downloaded copy for your records, especially if a payment is delayed.

Approval, rejection, and follow-up

The sanctioning or disbursing authority decides whether the certificate satisfies its rules. Download the certificate to check its status. If it is rejected, contact the PDA rather than repeatedly generating certificates without learning the reason. Verify names, PPO data, account details, Aadhaar linkage, and the selected authority before trying again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Renewal

Track the validity period assigned by your authority. Once it expires, generate a fresh DLC and retain the new Pramaan ID. A previous certificate does not extend automatically into the next validity period.

Bank visit: what is known and what must be confirmed

A bank branch may generate a DLC, direct you to an authorised operator, or require a different life-certificate process. The official sources do not establish a universal bank appointment system, fee, turnaround time, or branch service level. Contact the branch that actually disburses your pension and ask:

  • Does this branch generate Jeevan Pramaan for my PSA and pension scheme?
  • Do I need an appointment, and on which days is biometric service available?
  • What documents and identification should I bring?
  • Is there a charge, and will the branch provide a receipt?
  • Will the branch transmit the DLC electronically, or must I follow another submission step?

These questions matter because a bank holding your account is not automatically the same as the PDA responsible for accepting your life certificate.

Common problems and practical fixes

“My authority is not listed”

Do not proceed on the assumption that the certificate will be accepted. Ask the PSA or PDA whether onboarding is pending or whether a different life-certificate method is required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Aadhaar authentication fails”

Check that Aadhaar is registered with the PDA, that the mobile number is current, and that the biometric device or operator can read your fingerprint or iris. An operator may be able to retry with another finger; persistent failures should be escalated to the PDA.

“The centre or doorstep visit is unavailable”

Availability is local and can change. Confirm the slot, try another listed centre, or ask the disbursing bank about its own process. Do not infer that a centre shown in a locator is open or equipped for every pension authority.

“The certificate was generated but pension payment is affected”

Generation creates a record; it does not guarantee approval. Download the DLC, read the status, and contact the PDA with the Pramaan ID if the record is rejected or remains unprocessed.

How widely is Jeevan Pramaan being used?

The Jeevan Pramaan portal displayed 10.27 crore certificates submitted since 2014 and 146.15 lakh certificates submitted since 1 November 2024 when the figures were retrieved. The portal did not state an as-of date for either counter, so treat them as displayed cumulative figures rather than a dated monthly or annual statistic.

Decision checklist

  • Confirm your PSA is onboarded and your PDA can process DLCs.
  • Check whether you are excluded because you are re-employed or remarried.
  • Ensure Aadhaar is registered with the PDA and your mobile number is available.
  • Gather PPO, pension type, PSA, PDA, and pension-account details.
  • Compare the practical options: IPPB’s stated ₹70 assisted service, a local centre, self-generation, or your bank’s own process.
  • After generation, save the Pramaan ID, download the certificate, and verify approval status.
  • Record the authority-specific expiry date and renew with a new certificate before it lapses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is IPPB Jeevan Pramaan free?

No. IPPB lists ₹70 per successful Digital Life Certificate generation, inclusive of GST and CESS, and says there is no separate doorstep charge. Confirm the current local service arrangement before requesting a visit.

Can I submit a life certificate without visiting my bank?

Often, yes. If your PSA is onboarded and your PDA accepts Jeevan Pramaan, use IPPB assistance, a Jeevan Pramaan centre, or self-generation with compatible biometric equipment. Your pension authority still has to approve the certificate.

Do I need to buy a biometric scanner?

Only for self-generation. IPPB, a centre, or a PDA office supplies the assisted equipment, while self-generation requires an STQC-certified device, its RD service, the application, and internet.
