The lower-cost choice is the specific vehicle that produces the lower total cost over your mileage and ownership period. Compare fuel cost per mile at your local pump prices, then add purchase price, depreciation, maintenance and repairs, insurance, taxes and fees. Rising fuel prices increase the importance of the calculation, but they do not determine the result by themselves.
What changes when fuel prices rise?
Fuel-price increases magnify every difference in fuel consumption. They also magnify the risk of choosing by miles-per-gallon alone. A diesel can use fewer gallons yet still cost more to drive if diesel fuel is substantially more expensive than gasoline. Conversely, a gasoline vehicle with a lower purchase price can lose its advantage if it consumes many more gallons over a long ownership period.

For a fair comparison, use actual candidate vehicles rather than comparing “diesel” and “gasoline” as abstract categories. Match body size, trim, equipment, model year, condition and intended use as closely as possible. Then use your annual mileage, city/highway mix, local prices and expected ownership horizon.
The October 2026 price snapshot
The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported national average retail prices of $4.354 per gallon for regular gasoline and $6.199 per gallon for on-highway diesel for the week of October 5, 2026. These are U.S. weekly averages for one week, not a price guarantee. Your state, town, station, taxes and fuel grade can produce a materially different result.

That week’s diesel premium was $1.845 per gallon. At a spread that large, a diesel’s higher fuel economy must be translated into dollars per mile before it can be called cheaper. The EIA’s October 2026 Short-Term Energy Outlook also expected distillate inventories to remain below the 2021–2025 average during its forecast period, a condition that could keep diesel prices elevated. A forecast is conditional and uncertain; use it as a scenario, not as a promise about future pump prices.
Calculate fuel cost per mile first
The core calculation is:
Fuel cost per mile = fuel price per gallon ÷ real-world miles per gallon.
For an ownership period:
Total fuel cost = annual miles × years owned × fuel price per gallon ÷ miles per gallon.

Illustrative calculation
The following example is only a demonstration of the arithmetic, not a test result for any particular vehicle. Assume a gasoline candidate averages 30 mpg and a diesel candidate averages 38 mpg, while both are driven 15,000 miles per year. Applying the October 5, 2026 national averages gives:
| Candidate | Assumed economy | Price used | Fuel cost per mile | Annual fuel cost at 15,000 miles |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gasoline | 30 mpg | $4.354/gal | $0.1451 | $2,177 |
| Diesel | 38 mpg | $6.199/gal | $0.1631 | $2,447 |
Under those stated assumptions, the diesel uses fewer gallons but costs about $270 more per year in fuel because the price premium outweighs its efficiency advantage. Change the local prices or the vehicles’ economy and the ranking can reverse. Keep the assumptions visible whenever you compare results.

Find the mileage at which a diesel pays back
“How many miles do I need to drive for a diesel to pay for itself?” has no fixed answer. It depends on the diesel’s acquisition premium and the difference in fuel cost per mile.
When the diesel has the lower fuel cost per mile, the simple break-even equation is:
Break-even miles = diesel purchase premium ÷ (gasoline fuel cost per mile − diesel fuel cost per mile).
Include only costs that genuinely differ between the two candidates. If the diesel costs $3,000 more to acquire and saves 2 cents per mile in fuel, the arithmetic break-even point is 150,000 miles. That is an illustrative calculation; it excludes resale, financing, maintenance, repairs, insurance, taxes and fees. If the diesel’s fuel cost per mile is higher, there is no fuel-only payback point.
A more useful version includes resale and other ownership costs:

Calculate that total at the date you expect to sell, not only at an arbitrary mileage threshold. A vehicle that never wins on fuel can still be cheaper overall if it has a lower purchase price, slower depreciation or lower nonfuel costs. The reverse is also possible.
Build a complete total-cost-of-ownership comparison
1. Acquisition price and financing
Record the out-the-door price for each specific vehicle, including destination charges, dealer fees, sales tax and registration where applicable. Separate a diesel premium caused by the powertrain from differences in trim or equipment. If you finance, compare the amount financed and interest cost under the same down payment and term; otherwise a larger purchase price can be understated.
2. Depreciation and resale
Depreciation is often larger than any single year of fuel spending. Estimate the expected sale or trade-in value at your planned ownership date using comparable vehicles, mileage and condition. Treat resale estimates as ranges rather than certainties. Demand, emissions rules, fuel-price expectations and used-car supply can change the result before you sell.
3. Maintenance and repairs
Use the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and obtain service pricing for the exact engine and transmission. Include scheduled services, wear items and an allowance for unscheduled repairs. Diesel and gasoline versions can have different service requirements, parts prices and repair exposure, but the difference is model-specific. Do not substitute a generic “diesels last longer” assumption for service records or a written estimate.
4. Insurance
Request quotes for both vehicle identification numbers or exact configurations from the same insurers, with identical coverage limits and deductibles. A higher replacement value, different theft risk or repair cost can move premiums independently of fuel economy. If your comparison is close, an insurance quote or comparison service can be a useful practical input, but use an actual quote rather than a national average.
5. Taxes, registration and fees
Enter purchase taxes, annual registration, inspection charges, emissions fees, toll or road-use charges and any diesel-specific fees that apply in your jurisdiction. These vary by state and locality. Keep one-time charges separate from recurring costs so a short ownership period is not distorted by annualizing them incorrectly.

- Enter driving: estimate annual miles and the percentage of city, highway and towing or heavy-load use. Convert that pattern into a blended fuel-economy figure.
- Enter local fuel prices: use the grades you actually buy. Add a second and third price scenario if future prices could change your decision.
- Compute fuel: multiply annual miles by ownership years, divide by mpg, then multiply by price per gallon.
- Record acquisition cost: include taxes, registration, fees and financing interest if you are comparing financed purchases.
- Estimate depreciation: subtract expected resale value from acquisition cost. Use a range when the market is uncertain.
- Add upkeep: enter scheduled maintenance, tires, repairs and a clearly stated contingency allowance.
- Add insurance and government charges: use matched quotes and local fees.
- Subtract cash received at sale: include expected resale proceeds only once, either in depreciation or as a separate subtraction.
- Compare totals and run scenarios: identify which assumption changes the winner, then verify that assumption before buying.

Why annual mileage and driving mix matter
Annual distance determines how quickly any per-mile difference accumulates. A driver covering 6,000 miles a year may never recover a large diesel acquisition premium through fuel savings. A driver covering 30,000 highway miles a year has more opportunity to benefit from a lower fuel cost per mile—provided the diesel actually has one.
Driving mix affects both gallons consumed and the reliability of your estimate. City traffic, short trips, winter conditions, payload, roof racks, towing and high speeds can all reduce real-world economy relative to a label or specification. Apply the same conservative method to both vehicles. Favor a range, such as low, central and high annual mileage, rather than a single optimistic number.

A 2013 University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute total-cost comparison modeled diesel and gasoline counterparts. Its depreciation estimates used used-vehicle auction data, while fuel, repair, maintenance, insurance, fees and taxes came from government and external estimates. It concluded that clean diesels generally returned an investment in the three- and five-year analyses, with results varying by vehicle segment.

| Model example | Reported lower diesel total cost | Period and mileage | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volkswagen Jetta | $3,128 | Three years / 45,000 miles | Historical result for the selected comparison |
| Volkswagen Jetta | $5,475 | Five years / 75,000 miles | Historical result for the selected comparison |
| Volkswagen Golf | $5,013 | Three years / 45,000 miles | Historical result for the selected comparison |
| Volkswagen Golf | $1,506 | Five years / 75,000 miles | Historical result; the relative advantage changed with the horizon |
Those figures demonstrate why the answer can change by model and ownership period. They are not current predictions. The vehicles, fuel-price spread, regulations, used-car market and repair costs differ from those in a present-day purchase. A DOE and Oak Ridge National Laboratory total-cost analysis likewise shows that fuel results are sensitive to price, fuel economy, annual miles and the analysis window; its forward modeling used 2020-era source assumptions, not today’s retail prices.
Test the decision against fuel-price scenarios
Do not build a long-term purchase decision on one week’s pump price. Create at least three scenarios:
| Scenario | Gasoline input | Diesel input | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current snapshot | Your local regular price | Your local on-highway diesel price | Shows today’s cash-flow effect |
| Diesel-heavy spread | Gasoline held steady | Diesel rises faster | Tests exposure to an elevated diesel premium |
| Gasoline-heavy spread | Gasoline rises faster | Diesel held steady | Tests whether diesel efficiency becomes valuable |
Use your own numerical assumptions in each row and carry them through the entire ownership period. The EIA outlook can inform a scenario, but it cannot establish what your station will charge or how long a price relationship will last.

- Comparing mpg without prices: gallons per mile and dollars per mile are different measures.
- Using national averages as a personal budget: local taxes, station competition and fuel grade matter.
- Ignoring the purchase premium: fuel savings cannot repay a premium that is larger than the savings over your ownership horizon.
- Assuming resale is guaranteed: diesel demand and used-car values can change.
- Leaving out maintenance and repairs: one major repair or a different service schedule can outweigh months of fuel savings.
- Mixing vehicle classes: a heavy diesel truck versus a small gasoline car is not a powertrain comparison.
- Using label economy as a promise: load, weather and driving style affect both candidates.
- Counting the same item twice: either include resale in depreciation or subtract sale proceeds separately, but not both.
- Overlooking ownership length: a result at 45,000 miles may differ sharply from a result at 150,000 miles.
When gasoline is more likely to fit
A gasoline vehicle is often the safer financial choice when its purchase price is materially lower, your annual mileage is modest, diesel is expensive locally, or your ownership period is too short to spread acquisition and transaction costs. It can also win when matched insurance, maintenance, repair and resale estimates favor it even though its fuel economy is lower.
When diesel is more likely to fit
A diesel becomes more financially plausible when the specific model has a small acquisition premium, strong expected resale, a genuinely lower fuel cost per mile at your local prices and high annual mileage. Long-distance driving can make the fuel calculation more consequential, but only the complete worksheet can establish whether the advantage survives depreciation, maintenance, insurance, taxes and fees.
A decision rule for your purchase
- Choose two or more genuinely comparable vehicles.
- Collect local purchase, insurance, service and fuel figures.
- Calculate fuel cost per mile and total ownership cost for your planned years and miles.
- Run low, central and high mileage assumptions.
- Run multiple gasoline-versus-diesel price spreads.
- Buy the option with the lower total cost in the scenarios you consider realistic, unless a nonfinancial requirement—such as towing capability or range—justifies paying more.
The October 5, 2026 national averages show why this discipline matters: diesel was $1.845 per gallon above regular gasoline. A diesel’s efficiency may or may not overcome that gap. Your vehicle pair, driving pattern and ownership horizon—not the fuel label alone—determine the answer.
