Did AI Kill Coast FIRE? How to Stress-Test Your Plan in 2026

No. Nothing in the available evidence shows that AI has killed Coast FIRE. Coast FIRE is a savings milestone, not a promise of permanent employment: once your invested assets are projected to grow to your retirement target without further contributions, you still need income to pay today’s bills. AI may make that income assumption less secure for some occupations, but current exposure measures and early labor-market studies cannot tell you whether your own job will disappear, your pay will fall, or your Coast FIRE plan will fail.

The practical response is to treat employment income as a scenario to test—not to abandon the strategy on the basis of an occupational headline.

What Coast FIRE actually promises

Coast FIRE means you have accumulated enough invested money that compound growth could carry it to a chosen retirement target by a chosen age, assuming your investment return and timeline are reasonable. You may then stop making retirement contributions and use your earnings for current living costs, a less stressful job, part-time work, or other priorities.

That is different from being financially independent today. A traditional FIRE plan aims to support current spending from a portfolio. A Coast FIRE plan leaves the portfolio invested for later and requires a continuing income stream now. If that income stops and you sell the investments intended for retirement, you can undo the milestone.

The calculation is a projection, not a guarantee

A basic model compounds the current portfolio forward:

future portfolio = current portfolio × (1 + expected real return)years until retirement

The corresponding Coast FIRE threshold is the retirement target discounted by the expected real return for the remaining years. “Real” means after inflation. Your target depends on expected retirement spending, taxes, health costs, housing, and the age at which you plan to stop working. The projection also depends on market returns, fees, asset allocation, and whether you continue to avoid withdrawals.

Changing any of those inputs changes the milestone. A calculator can show whether a particular combination of savings, years, spending, and return assumptions reaches the target; it cannot guarantee the return or your future income.

Why AI raises a cash-flow question, not a Coast FIRE verdict

AI matters to a Coast FIRE plan mainly through the bridge between today and retirement. A job loss, lower compensation, longer job search, involuntary career change, or a move to part-time work can make it harder to pay rent, a mortgage, insurance, food, and other expenses without touching the portfolio.

That is a vulnerability in the income assumption. It is not evidence that the mathematics of compound growth stopped working. If you can cover expenses from earned income and leave the retirement assets invested, your plan can still be on track even if the work you do changes.

The current evidence does not provide an individual probability of displacement or a Coast FIRE failure rate. Occupational exposure is a signal about tasks and potential change, not a prediction of what will happen to one worker.

What the major evidence says—and what it cannot say

International Labour Organization: exposure is a risk signal

The International Labour Organization’s April 17, 2026 research brief, Workers’ exposure to AI: What indicators tell us – and what they don’t, explains that exposure estimates vary with the method used. Capability-based measures often flag cognitive, analytical, administrative, managerial, and other professional tasks; other approaches have highlighted routine work. Exposure can differ substantially inside the same occupational group.

The ILO also notes indirect effects. A role that changes may share skills, hiring pipelines, or career transitions with other roles, so a shock can travel beyond the initially exposed tasks. Its warning is explicit: “Therefore, exposure measures offer risk assessments about potential job transformations but cannot be interpreted as predictions of job displacement, productivity gains or reskilling needs.”

For Coast FIRE, that means an exposure label can prompt you to examine your income resilience. It cannot establish that you will be laid off or that you should delay coasting.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics: categories are not forecasts

The Bureau of Labor Statistics presents theoretical and observed AI-exposure categories to compare occupations. BLS cautions that exposure does not imply job loss, productivity gains, a probability of automation, or a particular wage effect. The categories can inform a career conversation, but they do not settle an individual’s outlook.

Stanford: a striking young-worker comparison, with important limits

A Stanford Digital Economy Lab working paper by Erik Brynjolfsson, Bharat Chandar, and Ruyu Chen, revised August 12, 2026, analyzes high-frequency ADP payroll data covering millions of U.S. workers through June 2026. It reports no evidence of widespread economy-wide displacement in the dataset. At the same time, employment for workers ages 22–25 in AI-exposed occupations stood 19% below where it would have been had it kept pace with less-exposed peers.

The 19% figure is a relative employment shortfall for a specific age group and comparison, not a 19% job-loss rate. The authors describe the findings as early descriptive indicators rather than causal estimates. It does not predict an individual’s outcome, measure retirement savings, or show how many Coast FIRE plans succeed or fail.

Federal Reserve: a specific coder result

A March 2026 Federal Reserve staff discussion paper by Leland D. Crane and Paul E. Soto finds that coder employment continued to grow, but more slowly than before 2022. In their analysis, the deceleration was not explained by industry-level shocks, suggesting an occupation-specific shock around ChatGPT’s introduction. This is evidence about one occupation and a particular period, not proof of broad contraction across all jobs. The Federal Reserve labels staff discussion papers preliminary and the authors’ views.

The missing statistic

No published source identified here measures AI’s effect on Coast FIRE outcomes. Converting an occupational employment comparison into a claim that a certain share of Coast FIRE plans will fail would be an unsupported leap.

Question What the evidence can show What it cannot establish
Is a task or occupation exposed? Potential for work to be transformed, using a stated measurement method. That every worker in the occupation will lose a job.
Are employment patterns changing? Descriptive comparisons, such as Stanford’s 19% relative shortfall for 22–25-year-olds in exposed occupations. That AI caused the entire difference or that it applies to your age, employer, or role.
Will a Coast FIRE plan work? Your savings, spending target, timeline, and return assumptions can be modeled. A population-wide AI success or failure rate for Coast FIRE.

If AI changes your job or pay, can you still Coast FIRE?

Possibly, if you can keep funding current expenses without drawing down the retirement assets that support the later target. Reaching the milestone gives you flexibility; it does not require you to remain in the same job. You might continue in the current role, switch employers, accept lower pay for less stress, work fewer hours, build another income stream, or temporarily resume contributions.

The key test is the size and durability of the gap between essential spending and dependable income. A short interruption covered by cash reserves is different from a permanent pay cut that forces portfolio withdrawals for years.

How to stress-test a Coast FIRE plan against employment uncertainty

  1. Recalculate the baseline. Record the current invested balance, retirement age, target spending, years remaining, and expected real return. Keep the assumptions visible rather than relying on a single calculator result.
  2. Separate essential and flexible spending. List housing, food, utilities, insurance, taxes, transportation, and minimum debt payments separately from travel, upgrades, and other discretionary costs. This shows the income level required to avoid selling investments.
  3. Model an income interruption. Test a period with no wages, then a return to work at lower pay. Include the length of a job search and realistic benefits or severance only if you are entitled to them. The question is how long your cash and other resources can carry essentials.
  4. Protect the coasting portfolio. Identify the account or assets intended for retirement and define conditions under which you would not sell them. If a withdrawal becomes necessary, model its effect on the target and retirement date rather than treating the original milestone as unchanged.
  5. Vary the retirement date. A later retirement date gives the portfolio more time to compound; an earlier date requires a larger balance or more contributions. Run both directions so the plan has a recovery path if work changes.
  6. Vary the real-return assumption. Use a conservative case, a central case, and a poor-return sequence. Do not treat any case as a promise. Market volatility can matter even when a long-run average looks adequate.
  7. Set a review trigger. Revisit the model after a layoff, a material pay cut, a role change, a major spending increase, or a change in expected retirement age. A scheduled annual review can catch drift before a forced sale.

Build resilience without pretending to predict AI

Keep a runway for the bridge years

Because Coast FIRE relies on current income, liquid reserves have a specific job: they buy time without requiring a sale of long-term investments during a job search or retraining period. The appropriate amount depends on essential spending, household income diversity, access to benefits, and how quickly you could find replacement work. Do not count volatile investments as if they were guaranteed cash.

Track tasks, not just job titles

Exposure can vary within an occupation. Break your work into tasks: research, drafting, analysis, customer interaction, physical activity, judgment, coordination, compliance, and relationship management. Identify which outputs AI tools could change and which depend on context, accountability, trust, or decisions that remain human-led. This produces a more useful skills plan than labeling an entire occupation safe or unsafe.

Preserve options to earn

Maintain current skills, document measurable results, keep professional contacts active, and learn the tools relevant to your field. These actions do not guarantee employment, but they can reduce the time and income gap if your role changes. A Coast FIRE plan is stronger when it can tolerate a lower-paid or part-time bridge job.

Use flexibility as a feature

Coasting is not an all-or-nothing switch. You can make occasional contributions, pause them, change the retirement date, or reduce spending. If AI reduces pay temporarily, resuming contributions later is not proof that Coast FIRE “failed”; it is an adjustment to new inputs.

Common mistakes when interpreting AI headlines

  • Turning exposure into a layoff forecast. The ILO and BLS explicitly reject that interpretation.
  • Applying the Stanford comparison to everyone. The result concerns workers ages 22–25 in exposed occupations and is descriptive, not causal.
  • Calling coder evidence economy-wide evidence. The Federal Reserve paper addresses coder employment and a specific slowdown.
  • Ignoring the spending bridge. A portfolio can be on track for age 65 while the household cannot cover age 35 expenses after a job loss.
  • Assuming a calculator output is a guarantee. Return, inflation, taxes, fees, sequence of returns, and withdrawals can change the result.
  • Using a single “AI-proof” career ranking. The cited sources do not establish reliable individual rankings across occupations.

A decision framework for your own plan

After running the scenarios, classify the plan by its weakest assumption:

If this is true… Practical response
Essential expenses are covered by dependable income and reserves can absorb a long search. Continue coasting, while reviewing the model at the triggers you set.
Income covers essentials only while employment remains stable. Build a larger runway, increase income flexibility, or continue partial contributions until the margin improves.
A likely pay cut would require portfolio withdrawals. Recalculate the target with the withdrawals, lower spending, a later retirement date, or renewed contributions.
The plan works only under an aggressive return assumption. Use a more conservative assumption and treat the original milestone as unconfirmed.

This framework does not require you to predict whether AI will replace your occupation. It asks whether your household can keep the long-term assets invested while adapting the work that pays for the present.

Bottom line: AI has not killed Coast FIRE

Coast FIRE remains a valid way to think about the relationship between early saving and later financial independence. AI makes the employment bridge worth testing more carefully, especially if your tasks are exposed or your household depends on one income. But the available studies describe potential task transformation, selected employment comparisons, and one occupation’s slowdown; they do not measure Coast FIRE outcomes or predict any individual’s future.

Use the milestone as a flexibility option, not a retirement date carved in stone. Keep enough liquidity for a disruption, model lower income and delayed retirement, and update the plan when your work or spending changes. That is a more defensible response to AI uncertainty than declaring Coast FIRE dead.
