DaVita Confirms Data Exfiltration After Interlock Ransomware Claim

DaVita did suffer a ransomware-related cybersecurity incident in April 2025. The company confirmed that parts of its network were encrypted, some operations were disrupted, and data was later exfiltrated from its laboratory business. Interlock claimed responsibility and published files it said came from DaVita, but DaVita did not publicly confirm that Interlock was the attacker.

That distinction matters for anyone assessing the risk to personal, medical, insurance, tax, or payment information. The incident is confirmed; the group attribution, the attacker’s claimed data volume, and the authenticity of every file posted to the leak site are not independently established.

What happened to DaVita?

DaVita said it discovered a ransomware incident on April 12, 2025. Certain elements of the company’s network had been encrypted. DaVita isolated affected systems, activated its incident-response procedures, notified law enforcement, and used contingency plans.

In its initial SEC filing, DaVita said the incident affected some operations but that patient care continued. Later filings indicated that relevant business functions were restored while remediation continued.

April 12 is the confirmed discovery date, not necessarily the date of the initial intrusion. Later breach reporting placed the possible activity period between March 24 and April 12, 2025. DaVita’s first public corporate disclosure followed on April 14.

What Interlock claimed

In late April 2025, the Interlock ransomware operation claimed responsibility for the DaVita attack. It said it had stolen roughly 1.5 terabytes of data and hundreds of thousands of files, then published samples and a larger collection through its leak site.

Those figures came from the ransomware group or reporting about its site. They were not an independently audited forensic inventory. The careful description is therefore: Interlock claimed responsibility and said it stole approximately 1.5 TB of data. It is not accurate to state without qualification that Interlock definitely breached DaVita.

A leak site can provide evidence that files associated with a company are in an extortion group’s possession, but it is not an independent investigation. DaVita later obtained leaked files and confirmed that at least some data had been stolen from its dialysis-laboratory systems. That supports the existence of a data breach, but it does not prove that every file posted by Interlock was authentic DaVita data.

What DaVita later confirmed

DaVita’s subsequent filings provided information that was not available in the initial breaking-news reports. The company said data had been exfiltrated from the DaVita Laboratory line of business and that the incident involved personally identifiable information and protected health information.

DaVita said it began notifying potentially affected people and regulators on August 1, 2025. A later filing reported that the notification process was completed on August 15, 2025. The company also said it would provide identity-protection resources, including credit monitoring and identity-theft protection, to eligible individuals.

Eligibility is individual. Being a current or former DaVita patient does not, by itself, prove that someone’s information was included. People should rely on a direct notice from DaVita and verify contact details through DaVita’s official website, rather than using links or contact information from a ransomware leak site or an unsolicited message.

  • Names and addresses
  • Dates of birth
  • Social Security numbers
  • Health-insurance information
  • Health conditions and treatment information
  • Dialysis laboratory test results
  • Tax-identification numbers for some individuals
  • Images of checks written to DaVita in limited cases
  • Other personal, financial, employee, or operational records alleged to have appeared in the publication

These categories should not be read as a description of every affected record. A person’s exposure depends on which systems and files contained that individual’s information. No one should download, reproduce, or share leaked medical records, checks, Social Security numbers, or identity documents.

How many people were affected?

The affected-person count has changed across reporting and should be treated cautiously. Reports have cited figures ranging from roughly 900,000 to nearly 2.7 million people. The Register later reported that DaVita had finalized the number at approximately 2.4 million.

These differences may reflect changing investigation stages, reporting revisions, or different counts used by regulators and media outlets. Readers should not treat the highest number as automatically definitive, and an exact figure should be tied to the current official breach notice or DaVita communication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The key point is not that every person connected with DaVita was affected. The key point is that DaVita later confirmed exfiltration of sensitive information and undertook a formal notification process.

Did dialysis treatment stop?

DaVita’s filings do not support saying that dialysis treatment stopped nationwide. They also do not support saying there was no operational impact.

The more accurate description is that administrative and technical operations were disrupted while DaVita used contingency procedures and prioritized continuity of dialysis care. Billing, revenue collection, intake, laboratory-related processes, and other business functions could be affected even when treatment continued.

What people who may be affected should do

  1. Look for an official notice. Check mail and email for a DaVita notification, and confirm any telephone number or website independently through DaVita’s official website.
  2. Activate offered protection. If the notice provides credit monitoring or identity-theft protection, enroll through the instructions in the verified notice and retain the enrollment deadline and confirmation.
  3. Review credit reports. Look for unfamiliar accounts, inquiries, addresses, or collection activity. In the United States, obtain reports through AnnualCreditReport.com.
  4. Consider a fraud alert or credit freeze. A fraud alert can signal lenders to take additional verification steps. A credit freeze can restrict new-credit access until it is lifted. A freeze does not stop every form of medical or tax fraud, so it should be combined with account monitoring.
  5. Review medical and insurance records. Watch for unfamiliar claims, bills, explanation-of-benefits statements, prescriptions, or changes to insurance information.
  6. Watch tax and payment accounts. Because some reports included tax-identification information and images of checks in limited cases, review bank activity, payment notifications, and tax correspondence carefully.
  7. Expect follow-up phishing. Criminals may impersonate DaVita, an insurer, a credit-monitoring provider, or a government agency. Do not provide passwords, one-time codes, bank details, or Social Security numbers in response to an unexpected message.

Credit monitoring can help identify some misuse after information is exposed, but it cannot retrieve leaked medical data, undo a ransomware intrusion, or guarantee protection from phishing.

What is Interlock?

The FBI, CISA, HHS, and MS-ISAC described Interlock in a July 2025 joint advisory as a ransomware operation active against organizations in North America and Europe since at least September 2024.

The advisory describes a double-extortion model: attackers steal data before encrypting systems and threaten to publish it if the victim does not pay. Reported Interlock activity has included encrypting virtual machines and directing victims to communicate through a Tor-based onion site. The advisory recommends controls such as endpoint detection and response, network segmentation, strong credential protection, resilient backups, and tested recovery procedures.

This context helps explain the DaVita incident, but it does not establish that Interlock was definitively responsible for it. Attribution requires evidence beyond a criminal group’s own claim.

Confirmed versus claimed

Confirmed by DaVita or its filings Claimed by Interlock or reported from its leak site
Ransomware incident discovered April 12, 2025 Responsibility for the attack
Encryption of certain network elements Approximately 1.5 TB of stolen data
Exfiltration from the DaVita Laboratory business Exact file count
Involvement of PII and PHI Authenticity of every published file
Operational disruption with continuity of patient care Ransom negotiations or payment status

What remains unknown

Public reporting does not establish that every file posted by Interlock came from DaVita, that all DaVita systems were affected, or that every current and former patient was exposed. There is also no verified evidence in the cited sources that DaVita paid a ransom or that the incident caused particular cases of identity theft or fraud.

DaVita reported approximately $13.5 million in incident-related charges in the second quarter of 2025, according to its quarterly results. That is a historical company expense, not a measure of any individual’s loss and not a forecast of what other healthcare organizations would spend.
