Cumulative vs non-cumulative FD: which payout option suits your cash-flow needs?

By TheFinanceBase Team 10 min read

A non-cumulative fixed deposit (FD) pays interest during the term, usually monthly or quarterly, so it can support recurring expenses. A cumulative FD keeps adding interest to the deposit and pays the accumulated proceeds at maturity, making it better suited to a future lump-sum goal. The right choice depends on when you need the money, the exact rate and tenure offered, tax treatment, and the bank’s early-closure rules.

The examples below use Indian bank terminology and policies. SBI, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank use similar labels, but payout frequencies, calculations and conditions can differ by product, customer category and deposit term.

How cumulative and non-cumulative FDs differ

Feature Cumulative FD Non-cumulative FD
Interest timing Interest is retained in the deposit and paid with the principal at maturity. Interest is credited at a selected interval during the term, such as monthly or quarterly.
Reinvestment Interest is added to the balance for subsequent compounding periods. Interest is taken out of the deposit instead of being left to compound there.
Cash available during the term Normally limited to the principal and interest proceeds at maturity unless the deposit is closed early. Regular interest credits provide cash while the principal remains invested.
Best fit A planned future amount, such as education funding, a down payment or a reserve with a known date. Recurring expenses for which a predictable interest credit is useful.
Main comparison Projected maturity proceeds under the bank’s compounding method. Amount and timing of each credit, plus the principal returned at maturity.

These are payout structures, not universal rate categories. The same bank can quote different rates for different tenures, deposit sizes, customer types and special schemes. Compare the complete offer rather than choosing from the label alone.

How a cumulative FD works

Interest stays invested

With a cumulative deposit, the bank retains the interest instead of sending it to your savings account. The retained amount is added to the principal for the next compounding period. ICICI Bank describes its cumulative deposits as compounding quarterly and paying the accumulated amount at maturity: ICICI Bank’s fixed-deposit FAQs.

Why the maturity value can be higher than the original principal

Because each credited interest amount remains invested, later periods can earn interest on both the original principal and earlier interest. The actual maturity value depends on the bank’s stated compounding convention, the contracted rate, the tenure, the deposit amount and any customer-category adjustment. Use the bank’s calculation for the exact offer; an annual-rate shortcut can produce the wrong result.

When cumulative is useful

  • You have a target date and want one payment rather than a stream of small credits.
  • You do not need the interest for current bills.
  • You want the deposit itself to perform the reinvestment without moving each payment manually.
  • You are comparing products where the maturity proceeds, rather than monthly income, determine success.

How a non-cumulative FD works

Interest is paid during the term

A non-cumulative, traditional or interest-payout FD credits interest at an interval offered by the bank. ICICI describes traditional deposits with monthly or quarterly credit. SBI says interest is normally payable quarterly or together with the principal at maturity, while eligible deposits may provide monthly, half-yearly or annual payment at the depositor’s request: SBI’s fixed-deposit page.

Monthly payment is not automatically the annual rate divided by 12

Monthly interest may be paid at a discounted rate. SBI explicitly notes a discount for monthly payment, HDFC Bank describes monthly payout as a quarterly calculation paid monthly at a discounted rate, and ICICI’s calculator identifies monthly payout as discounted. Therefore, do not estimate a monthly credit by simply dividing the quoted annual rate by 12. Ask for the bank’s projected periodic credit for the exact deposit.

What happens at maturity

The principal is generally returned at maturity, while the interest has already been credited during the term. The maturity amount can therefore be lower than the maturity amount shown for a comparable cumulative FD, even when the underlying rate appears similar, because the cumulative option retains and compounds the interest. The bank’s illustration is the authoritative comparison for that offer.

What the major Indian bank descriptions show

The terminology is broadly consistent across the three sources, but the operating details are bank-specific.

Bank source Cumulative or reinvestment description Periodic-payout description Important qualification
State Bank of India Interest can be taken with principal at maturity. Interest is normally payable quarterly; eligible deposits may allow monthly, half-yearly or annual payment on request. Monthly payment is at a discounted rate. The page reports a last-updated date of 16 May 2025, so verify rates and options again before booking.
HDFC Bank Interest is added to principal each quarter for subsequent periods. Monthly payout is calculated for the quarter and paid monthly at a discounted rate. Interest is taxable; early closure can trigger an adjustment under the booked terms.
ICICI Bank Quarterly compounding with payment at maturity. Traditional deposits can credit interest monthly or quarterly. The available choice and calculation depend on the selected deposit and its terms.

This table explains the structures, not a current rate ranking. Rates change and can differ by tenure, amount and depositor category.

Compare two actual FD offers step by step

Use this process when you have two quotations, renewal choices or calculator results. Record the values for the same principal and intended term so the comparison is meaningful.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define the cash-flow objective. Write down whether you need income during the term or a single amount on a target date. Also note the dates on which rent, tuition, premiums or another obligation falls due.
  2. Match the tenure. Compare offers for the same number of days or months. A shorter or longer term can carry a different rate and a different maturity date.
  3. Confirm the customer category. Ask whether the quote is for the correct depositor type, such as an individual or another category recognized by the bank. Do not transfer a rate from a different category.
  4. Select the payout structure. Choose cumulative, monthly, quarterly or another interval actually offered for that deposit. Record whether the quotation is for a traditional payout or a reinvestment deposit.
  5. Capture the periodic credit or maturity proceeds. For a non-cumulative choice, obtain the expected amount and payment dates for each credit. For a cumulative choice, obtain the maturity amount and maturity date.
  6. Check the calculation assumptions. Confirm the principal, tenure, contracted rate, compounding frequency and any monthly-payout discount. The ICICI Bank FD calculator, for example, asks for deposit amount, tenure, FD type and customer type.
  7. Review liquidity terms. Check whether premature withdrawal is allowed, how the interest rate is reset if you close early, and whether interest already paid can be recovered or adjusted.
  8. Compare after-tax cash flows. Interest is taxable, but the applicable tax and any withholding depend on the depositor and jurisdiction. Use the rules that apply to you rather than comparing only the headline interest figures.
  9. Save the booked terms. Keep the confirmation showing rate, payout instruction, maturity instruction, nominee details and premature-closure conditions. The booking document controls if a webpage or calculator later changes.

Which option fits common cash-flow situations?

You need regular income for living costs

A non-cumulative FD is usually the more practical starting point when the interest is intended for groceries, utilities, rent or another recurring bill. Select the payment interval that matches the bill schedule and maintain a separate liquidity buffer for expenses that arise before the next credit. Check the quoted monthly amount rather than assuming it equals one-twelfth of the annual rate.

You are building a known future amount

A cumulative FD can fit a goal such as a fee due at a particular date, a planned purchase or a reserve you do not want to spend gradually. Since interest remains invested, the bank pays one accumulated amount at maturity. Choose a maturity date that gives you time to move the proceeds before the bill is due.

You need some income but also want a later lump sum

Consider dividing the money between structures instead of forcing one deposit to do both jobs. A periodic-payout portion can cover a defined cash need, while a cumulative portion can target the future amount. Each deposit should be compared independently for rate, tenure, tax and early-closure terms. Do not assume that splitting automatically improves returns; it changes liquidity and may change the rates available.

Your expenses are quarterly or annual

Quarterly or annual payout can align better than monthly credit when bills follow that schedule. SBI’s page indicates that some eligible deposits can offer half-yearly or annual payment on request, but availability is product-specific. Confirm the option before booking rather than relying on a general description.

You may need the principal unexpectedly

Neither payout label removes early-closure risk. Keep emergency money outside the FD if a forced withdrawal would disrupt your plan. If an early closure is possible, read the bank’s adjustment method and estimate the result before committing the full amount.

Interest, tax and the meaning of the displayed return

Rate is not the same as cash received

The quoted rate describes the contracted calculation, while your cash pattern depends on the payout choice. A cumulative deposit can show a larger maturity figure because interest stays invested. A non-cumulative deposit can show lower maturity proceeds because interest has already been paid out. Compare the total cash received over the entire term, not just the final line on one statement.

Monthly payout requires special attention

When the bank discounts monthly payment, the periodic credit is based on its stated method rather than a simple annual-rate division. Ask the bank to show the monthly amount, the calculation basis and the amount that would be payable at maturity. Keep those figures with the deposit confirmation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interest is taxable

HDFC Bank identifies FD interest as taxable. The rate of tax, reporting obligation and any withholding depend on your jurisdiction, residency, depositor status and applicable rules. Use current official tax guidance or a qualified adviser for your circumstances. Do not treat the bank’s quoted rate as an after-tax return.

Early closure, renewal and liquidity checks

What can change when you close early

Bank terms may reduce the interest rate for the shorter period actually completed, apply a penalty or recover interest already paid. HDFC Bank’s terms describe possible recovery of interest paid or a reduced rate or penalty when a deposit is closed early: HDFC Bank’s terms and conditions. The exact rule is contractual, so read the terms for your deposit rather than applying one bank’s rule to another.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Is premature withdrawal permitted for this product and amount?
  • Which rate applies if the FD is closed before its original maturity?
  • Is a penalty charged, and can already-paid interest be debited or recovered?
  • Is partial withdrawal available, or must the entire deposit be closed?
  • What happens automatically at maturity: payout, renewal of principal, or renewal of principal plus interest?
  • How can the maturity instruction be changed before the due date?

Renewal can silently change the outcome

A renewal is a new decision at the then-applicable terms. Record the maturity instruction and review the renewed rate, tenure and payout structure instead of assuming the original choice continues unchanged.

Deposit protection and concentration

Deposit insurance limits and aggregation rules are jurisdiction-specific. The bank material considered here does not establish a single current protection limit, so verify the limit and the way deposits are aggregated with the relevant official deposit insurer before concentrating a large balance in one institution. Protection rules are separate from the choice between cumulative and non-cumulative payout.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing by label alone: Two products called cumulative can have different rates, compounding conventions or eligible tenures.
  • Dividing the annual rate by 12: Monthly payout can be discounted, so obtain the bank’s quoted monthly credit.
  • Comparing different terms: A rate for one tenure is not a valid benchmark for another.
  • Ignoring customer category: A rate shown for another depositor type may not apply to you.
  • Comparing maturity values without counting interim credits: Add every non-cumulative payment when assessing total cash.
  • Treating gross interest as spendable income: Set aside the amount required for tax under your rules.
  • Skipping early-closure terms: A deposit that looks attractive can be costly if you must break it early.
  • Assuming every payout frequency is available: Monthly, quarterly, half-yearly and annual choices depend on the product.
  • Failing to document instructions: Keep the confirmation and maturity mandate so an automatic renewal does not surprise you.

A practical decision rule

  1. Start with the date on which you need the money.
  2. If you need cash during the term, shortlist non-cumulative options whose payment dates match your expenses.
  3. If you need one amount at the end and can leave interest invested, shortlist cumulative options.
  4. For either shortlist, compare the exact rate, tenure, customer category, projected cash flows and maturity proceeds.
  5. Apply tax and early-closure consequences before deciding.
  6. Confirm the deposit-protection position and keep an emergency reserve outside the FD.

The best payout option is therefore the one whose cash-flow timing matches your obligation while its after-tax, contractual return and liquidity terms remain acceptable. A cumulative FD is not automatically better because it compounds, and a non-cumulative FD is not automatically better because it pays sooner; each solves a different cash-flow problem.
