The right crypto-tax software is the one that supports every exchange, wallet, chain and transaction type in your tax year, then gives you a reviewable report at a price that matches your transaction count. There is no universally best platform. Free accounts may import data or show a portfolio while withholding the downloadable forms needed to file. Before paying, verify the exact data route (API, exchange CSV, custom CSV or public wallet address), transaction allowance, cost-basis and transfer tools, jurisdictional output and support for DeFi, staking, NFTs or derivatives. Prices and integrations change, so treat the figures below as vendor-posted terms accessed October 25, 2026, not permanent quotes.
What should you compare before choosing crypto-tax software?
Start with your own transaction inventory, not a software brand’s headline integration count. List every centralized exchange account, self-custody wallet, blockchain, bridge, protocol and tax year involved. Then check whether the product can import each source and classify the transactions you actually made.

- Report access: Does the plan produce downloadable tax forms or only portfolio tracking and gain previews?
- Matched capacity: What does the plan cost at your transaction count, including the next tier if you exceed the limit?
- Data route: Is your source connected by API, exchange CSV, custom CSV or public wallet address, and are all transaction types included?
- Reconciliation: Can you match transfers, edit cost basis, identify duplicates and investigate negative balances or missing acquisitions?
- Activity coverage: Are your DeFi, staking, NFT, lending, margin, bridge and other on-chain events documented specifically?
- Jurisdiction: Does it create the forms and accounting method required where you file?
A large integration number is not proof that your particular account works. Confirm the exchange name, account type, chain and transaction category in the vendor’s current support directory before subscribing.
How much do the leading plans cost at comparable transaction counts?
Entry prices are only comparable when both the transaction allowance and filing-report access match. The table uses official pricing pages accessed October 25, 2026; vendors can change prices, limits and inclusions.
#1 Best Overall
| Product | Free or entry evidence | Higher published tier | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Koinly | Free account lists up to 10,000 transactions, but tax reports are unavailable. Newbie starts at $49 per tax year for 100 transactions. | $99 for 1,000; $199 starting for 3,000+ transactions. | Whether the free account is sufficient for review only, and whether your wallet, exchange and country are supported. Koinly pricing |
| CoinLedger | Free portfolio tracking; paid plan $49 for up to 100 transactions. | $99 for up to 1,000; $199+ for 3,000+. | The final tier at your count and whether your source uses automatic API sync or a manual file. CoinLedger pricing |
| CoinTracker | Free portfolio tracking without downloadable tax forms; $59/year for up to 100 transactions. | $199/year for up to 1,000; higher tiers are listed by the vendor. | Whether U.S. filing integrations and included features justify the price for your volume. CoinTracker pricing |
These are posted prices, not individualized quotes, tax advice or a guarantee that a plan will handle your records. A 101st transaction can move you into a materially different tier, so estimate conservatively and check whether the vendor counts transfers, income events or only taxable disposals.
What does each product document about features and support?
Official pages provide the clearest evidence for Koinly, CoinLedger and CoinTracker. A September 1, 2026 comparison from Coin Bureau supplies broader market context for five additional platforms, but its rankings and descriptions are editorial judgments rather than independent accuracy tests.

The comparison publisher says it considered reporting, imports, DeFi, NFTs, staking, derivatives, cost-basis reconciliation, country coverage, accounting methods, filing integrations, price at different volumes and human assistance. Those criteria are useful for your checklist, but they do not establish that any program will classify your individual transactions correctly. No neutral benchmark of software accuracy was identified.
Which import method should you use for an exchange or wallet?
API synchronization, exchange CSV, custom CSV and public wallet-address import are separate capabilities. Choose the route that preserves the most complete history and lets you verify what was received.
API synchronization
An API can update transactions without repeated downloads, but permissions and exchange coverage vary. Confirm whether the connection is read-only, which account types it can see, the earliest date it retrieves and whether deposits, withdrawals, staking income and fees are included.

Exchange CSV files
CSV imports are useful when an exchange has no working API or when you need an archived snapshot. Download the exchange’s complete history, including deposits, withdrawals, trades, fees and income, then compare the file’s date range with your account records.
Recommended Free Tools
Custom CSV and public wallet addresses
Custom files can fill gaps, but column names, timestamps, asset symbols and fee treatment must match the software’s template. A public address import can reveal on-chain activity, yet it may not know that two addresses belong to you or connect an exchange withdrawal to the wallet receipt.
- Write down every source and date range before importing.
- Check the vendor directory for the exact exchange, wallet, chain and account type.
- Import one source at a time and inspect balances and transaction counts.
- Save the original files and API export so you can reproduce or correct the calculation later.
How do you reconcile missing, duplicated or misclassified transactions?
Reconciliation is as important as importing. A report can look polished while still omitting acquisition history or treating a transfer as a sale.
Match transfers
Look for a withdrawal from one account paired with a deposit to another. Transfer-matching tools should prevent a self-transfer from becoming a disposal, but inspect uncertain matches manually, especially across bridges and intermediate wallets.
Repair cost basis
If the software cannot find how you acquired an asset, it may show an unknown or zero basis. Locate the original purchase, deposit or inheritance record and enter the supporting details rather than accepting an automatically generated gain.
Rank #3
Investigate warnings and duplicates
Use balance checks, negative-balance alerts and duplicate detection to find impossible sequences. A negative balance can indicate a missing deposit, an incorrect timestamp or a duplicated sale; deleting a warning without finding its cause can change the taxable result.
Review classifications
Examine staking, lending, liquidity-pool, NFT, margin and bridge events individually. Labels such as “DeFi supported” do not tell you how a particular protocol’s deposit, reward, withdrawal or token swap will be classified.
Is free crypto-tax software enough to file?
Sometimes it is enough to organize data, but a free account may not produce a filing-ready report. Koinly’s free level lists 10,000 transactions yet marks tax reports unavailable. CoinTracker says free includes portfolio tracking without downloadable tax forms. CoinLedger advertises free portfolio tracking while placing tax reports in paid tiers.
Use a free level to test whether your imports work, whether balances reconcile and whether the interface recognizes your activity. Before relying on it for a return, verify that it exports the forms or files your preparer accepts, covers the entire tax year and includes the accounting method and jurisdiction you need.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow do U.S. tax obligations affect your software choice?
This section is U.S.-specific. The IRS states, “For U.S. tax purposes, digital assets are considered property, not currency.” It also says, “If you have digital asset transactions, you must report them whether or not they result in a taxable gain or loss.” Read the IRS digital-assets guidance for the current federal rules.
Rank #4
Software organizes imported records and calculates figures; it does not prove that the underlying history is complete or that a classification is legally correct. The IRS directs taxpayers to retain records supporting positions on their returns, including acquisitions, receipts, sales, exchanges, dispositions and relevant fair market value. Preserve source statements and investigate gaps before exporting.
CoinTracker documents Form 8949 and Schedule D on paid plans, while CoinLedger lists Form 8949 and exports to major tax products. Those features can streamline preparation, but the correct form set depends on your facts and filing situation. Complex DeFi, lending, derivatives, gifts, forks, staking or multi-country activity warrants advice from a qualified tax professional familiar with digital assets.

Small, straightforward trading history
Compare the 100-transaction tiers rather than the lowest advertised price: Koinly $49, CoinLedger $49 and CoinTracker $59/year as posted on October 25, 2026. Choose based on your exchange connection, report format and reconciliation workflow.

Prioritize transfer matching, complete historical imports and a way to edit cost basis. A platform that imports one exchange automatically but requires a clean custom CSV for another may take less time overall than one with a larger headline integration count but weak exception handling.
DeFi, NFTs or on-chain activity
Verify the exact chains and protocols, not just a DeFi label. CoinTracker documents automated categorization for liquidity pools and lending; CoinLedger lists DeFi, NFTs and margin trading; Koinly lists DeFi/NFT support and EVM auto-sync. Confirm how rewards, wrapped assets, bridges and fees appear in a sample import.

High-volume history
Model the price at your peak transaction count and ask whether the tier includes all reports. The Coin Bureau comparison presents CoinTracking and Summ as high-volume-oriented options, but current caps and prices must be confirmed with each vendor.
Users seeking human help
TokenTax is described as offering optional professional tax assistance, while other products may be primarily do-it-yourself. Ask in writing whether a human reviews your transaction file, prepares a return, signs anything or merely answers software questions, and what is included in the fee.
What is a practical workflow from import to filing?
- Inventory: list accounts, addresses, chains, protocols and tax years.
- Collect: download complete exchange CSVs, wallet histories and statements; save them unchanged.
- Connect: add APIs or public addresses only after checking exact support and permissions.
- Reconcile: resolve missing basis, duplicate rows, transfer pairs, negative balances and unexplained income.
- Review: filter by transaction type and inspect high-value or unusual events manually.
- Export: confirm that the paid tier supplies the required forms, schedules or tax-product file for your jurisdiction.
- Archive: retain the source records, corrections, exported report and notes explaining classifications.
Do not treat an import completion message as proof of accuracy. Reconcile totals against exchange statements and wallet balances before filing.
What can make a quoted price or feature misleading?
- Free does not mean filing-ready: portfolio tracking and report downloads can be separate entitlements.
- Counts are not standardized: vendors may count transfers, income events or individual legs differently.
- Integration totals are vendor claims: CoinLedger’s 1,000+ figure and CoinTracking’s 400+ import description are not independent audits.
- Country support differs: a U.S. Form 8949 workflow does not automatically satisfy European or other local requirements.
- Prices are volatile: the figures here were posted on October 25, 2026; recheck the live page at purchase.
- Human services have different scopes: software support, data review and preparation of a complete return are not interchangeable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I switch crypto-tax software after importing my transactions?
Yes, but keep the original exchange files, wallet exports and any manually corrected rows. A new platform may classify the same transfer or cost basis differently, so compare its opening balances and realized gains with the prior report before replacing your records.
Does a wallet address reveal all of my crypto-tax information?
No. An address shows activity on its visible chain, but it may not identify your ownership of multiple addresses, off-chain exchange trades, fiat deposits, or the original cost basis. Combine address data with exchange statements and your own records.
Should I import old tax years even if I only need this year’s return?
Usually you should provide enough history to establish the acquisition basis of assets sold this year. If earlier purchases are missing, the software may calculate an unreliable gain; locate prior statements or discuss the gap with a tax professional.
What should I do if an exchange connection stops working?
Download a current CSV and an account statement immediately, then record the date the API last synchronized. Check whether the vendor changed its connector or the exchange changed permissions, and reconcile the replacement file for duplicates before exporting.
Can crypto-tax software decide whether a transaction is taxable?
It can apply programmed categories and accounting rules, but it cannot know every fact that determines tax treatment. Review unusual events and obtain professional advice when the classification depends on your intent, legal status, jurisdiction or incomplete records.
