Crypto security is less about finding a single “safe” wallet and more about protecting three things: the keys that authorize transactions, the accounts used to access custodians, and the approvals granted to blockchain applications.
The right precautions depend on where your assets are held. An exchange account creates risks such as account takeover, fraudulent withdrawals, frozen access, and platform failure. A self-custody wallet removes the exchange from the signing process, but makes you responsible for the recovery phrase, device security, transaction review, and emergency response.
How crypto ownership actually works
A wallet usually does not store coins in the same way a bank account stores dollars. Blockchain networks record balances and transactions; the wallet manages the private keys or other credentials used to authorize transactions.
That distinction has an important consequence: whoever controls the relevant private key or Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP) can generally control the associated assets. Confirmed blockchain transactions are usually irreversible. A wallet provider normally cannot reverse a transfer sent to the wrong address or recover funds authorized by a compromised key.

Many transactions are publicly recorded with wallet addresses, amounts, and timestamps. Crypto is therefore not automatically anonymous. Activity may sometimes be linked to a person through exchange records, messages, device information, or other identifying data. Recovery phrases and private keys
A recovery phrase—also called a seed phrase or Secret Recovery Phrase—is the master backup for a wallet. In MetaMask, for example, the SRP can restore the wallet and its derived accounts. An individual account’s private key may not restore the other accounts in the wallet.
Anyone who obtains the phrase may be able to drain the associated assets. Never enter it into:
- A website claiming to be wallet support.
- A customer-service chat, email, form, or direct message.
- A “verification” or account-unlock page.
- A screen-sharing or remote-support session.
- A phone or computer simply because an unsolicited message tells you to do so.
A legitimate wallet or exchange support representative should not request your complete recovery phrase or private key. Do not photograph the phrase, put it in a cloud-synchronized note, email it to yourself, or save the only copy in a password manager or ordinary computer file.

- Write the phrase down accurately and keep it offline.
- Protect it from unauthorized access, fire, water, and physical loss.
- For significant long-term holdings, consider a durable offline backup—but remember that a metal backup can still be stolen or copied.
- Avoid unnecessary duplicate copies. Every additional copy is another place an attacker can find it.
- Test the recovery process with a small, low-value wallet before relying on it for substantial assets.
A hardware wallet is designed to keep private keys away from ordinary online devices. It can reduce online exposure, but it does not stop phishing, malicious transaction approvals, blind signing, theft, loss, defective hardware, or recovery-phrase theft.

Custodial accounts versus self-custody wallets
| Storage type | Who controls the signing keys? | Main risks |
|---|---|---|
| Custodial exchange or app | The provider generally controls them for you | Account takeover, fraudulent withdrawals, frozen accounts, outages, provider insolvency, and identity-verification problems |
| Self-custody wallet | You control them | Lost or exposed recovery phrase, malware, fake wallet software, malicious approvals, wrong addresses, and irreversible user-authorized transfers |
Custodial accounts
With an exchange, your security responsibilities include the exchange password, email account, multifactor authentication, withdrawal controls, trusted devices, phone number, and support channels. Custody is not the same as a bank deposit, and crypto balances are not automatically equivalent to FDIC-insured bank deposits.
Use a unique password generated and stored by a reputable password manager. Enable multifactor authentication, preferably a passkey or physical security key. An authenticator app using TOTP is generally stronger than SMS, while SMS is better treated as a fallback because phishing and SIM-swap attacks can defeat it.
Secure the email account attached to the exchange with a separate password and strong MFA. Add a carrier PIN or account passcode where your mobile provider offers one. An attacker who controls your email may reset the exchange password, intercept alerts, or persuade support staff to change account details.

Self-custody wallets
Self-custody gives you control of the keys but also transfers the backup and incident-response burden to you. If the recovery phrase is exposed, changing the wallet password is not enough. Create a new wallet with a new phrase on a clean device or trusted hardware wallet, then move the remaining assets to it. Stop using the compromised wallet and its derived accounts.
Recognizing crypto phishing and impersonation
Crypto scams often create urgency: an account is supposedly at risk, a wallet must be verified, a token claim expires soon, or a withdrawal requires an immediate payment. Common targets include:

- Fake exchange and wallet login pages.
- Search advertisements impersonating wallet software.
- Fake browser extensions and mobile apps.
- Fraudulent support accounts on social media.
- Fake airdrops, NFT mints, staking offers, and token claims.
- QR codes that encode an attacker-controlled address.
- Fake investment platforms displaying fabricated profits.
- Impersonated celebrities, employees, friends, or romantic contacts.
Do not use a login link, phone number, QR code, or support contact from an unsolicited message. Open the service through a bookmark or type a manually verified official domain. Download wallet software only from the wallet maker’s verified distribution channel.
No legitimate government agency, utility, law-enforcement officer, or prize promoter requires cryptocurrency to protect your money, resolve an investigation, prevent arrest, or release a prize. A caller directing you to a crypto ATM and providing a QR code is using a known impersonation pattern.

Understand what you are signing
Connecting a wallet to a decentralized application is not the same as approving a token transfer. A connection may expose a public address and balances. A token approval or allowance can authorize a smart contract to move specified tokens. The setApprovalForAll function can authorize an operator to transfer assets in an NFT collection.
A transaction or message signature may authorize a transfer, approval, listing, delegation, or another action. Before signing:
- Check the exact website domain.
- Confirm the intended blockchain network.
- Read the wallet prompt rather than clicking through automatically.
- Verify the destination address and amount on the trusted signing device.
- Use a limited token allowance instead of an unlimited allowance when possible.
- Treat unexplained “Permit,” “Approve,” “Set approval for all,” or raw-data requests as high risk.
- Reject the request if the wallet shows only opaque text such as “Data Present” and you cannot independently verify the action.
“Blind signing” means approving transaction data the wallet cannot display in a readable form. That data can conceal a transfer, unlimited approval, or another authorization.

Disconnecting a wallet from a dapp does not necessarily revoke permissions already granted. Revocation is a separate on-chain transaction and usually requires a network fee. Periodically review token allowances using a reputable block-explorer approval checker, established allowance-management service, or wallet feature that explicitly lists approvals.

Before sending funds, compare the complete destination address—not only its first and last characters. Confirm the network and token standard. An address that looks valid on one network may not be the intended destination or usable on another.
For an unfamiliar recipient or network, send a small test transaction first. Obtain the address through a trusted, independent channel rather than copying it from an unexpected message or transaction history. Clipboard malware and address-poisoning schemes can substitute an attacker’s address for one that looks familiar.
Save the transaction hash, destination address, amount, asset, network, and timestamp. A block explorer can show whether a transaction was confirmed, but it cannot reverse a completed transfer.

| Warning sign | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Guaranteed or “zero-risk” returns | Legitimate investments do not guarantee rapid profits. |
| Payment required before a withdrawal | Fake platforms often display profits and then demand taxes, fees, deposits, or verification payments. |
| Someone asks you to send crypto to “protect” your funds | Sending crypto does not place it in a protective escrow controlled by an authority. |
| An unsolicited romantic contact offers investment advice | This is a common relationship-investment scam pattern. |
| A celebrity promises to multiply crypto | Giveaway and doubling schemes are designed to collect irreversible payments. |
| A recovery agent wants an upfront fee | Scammers often target previous victims with fake recovery services. |
| An unsolicited airdrop or NFT tells you to connect or reveal your phrase | It may lead to a malicious site or authorization request. |
A claim that a platform is licensed, government-approved, or regulated is not proof that it is legitimate. Verify the business independently rather than trusting a badge, screenshot, or message. Crypto payments are generally difficult to reverse and usually lack the dispute protections associated with credit or debit cards.

What to do after a suspected compromise
If a recovery phrase or private key was exposed
- Stop using the wallet.
- Create a new wallet on a clean device or trusted hardware wallet.
- Move remaining assets immediately, prioritizing assets most likely to be drained.
- Revoke approvals where possible, but do not rely on revocation if the private key itself is compromised.
- Disconnect the compromised device from sensitive accounts and investigate possible malware.
- Change passwords and MFA for related exchange, email, cloud, and mobile-carrier accounts.
- Preserve transaction hashes, addresses, timestamps, messages, domains, and screenshots.
- Do not send more funds to anyone promising recovery.
If an exchange account was taken over
- Use the exchange’s verified official website or support channel.
- Lock or restrict the account if that feature is available.
- Change exchange and email passwords from a clean device.
- Revoke unknown sessions, API keys, and withdrawal permissions.
- Contact your mobile carrier if a SIM swap may have occurred.
- Save login alerts, withdrawal records, and all communications.
Report the theft or scam
The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) asks victims to provide the transaction ID or hash, originating wallet address, recipient wallet address, cryptocurrency and amount, date and time, exchange or app involved, website or domain, and relevant communications. The current IC3 form labels key fields “Transaction ID/Hash,” “Originating Wallet Address,” and “Recipient Wallet Address.” File a complaint at complaint.ic3.gov. Reporting cannot guarantee recovery, but the records may help investigators trace related activity.
Security myths worth dropping
- “A hardware wallet makes crypto safe.” It reduces online key exposure; it does not prevent phishing, malicious approvals, blind signing, theft, or a stolen recovery phrase.
- “Disconnecting from a dapp removes its permissions.” Existing token allowances require a separate revocation transaction.
- “The blockchain can reverse a scam.” It may provide traceability, but confirmed transactions are generally irreversible.
- “SMS two-factor authentication is fully secure.” SMS is vulnerable to phishing and SIM swaps; passkeys and physical security keys are more resistant to phishing.
- “Support can recover funds if I provide my seed phrase.” A request for the phrase is a major compromise warning, not a recovery procedure.
FAQ
Is a crypto exchange safer than a self-custody wallet?
Neither is automatically safer. An exchange handles key storage but exposes you to account takeover, withdrawal fraud, frozen access, outages, and provider failure. Self-custody removes the custodian but makes you responsible for the recovery phrase, device, approvals, and every transaction.
What should I do if I entered my recovery phrase on a website?
Assume the wallet is compromised. Create a new wallet with a new recovery phrase on a clean device, move remaining assets immediately, and stop using the old wallet. Change related exchange, email, cloud, and mobile-account credentials and preserve evidence.
Does disconnecting my wallet from a dapp revoke token approvals?
No. Disconnecting controls the wallet connection; it does not necessarily remove existing allowances. Review and revoke unwanted approvals separately. Each revocation is normally an on-chain transaction that may require a network fee.
Can a blockchain transaction be reversed after a scam?
Usually not. A block explorer may help document and trace the transaction, but it generally cannot undo a confirmed transfer. Save the transaction hash, wallet addresses, amount, asset, network, timestamp, and messages, then report the incident.
The Bottom Line
Protect the recovery phrase as if it were the combination to a vault, use phishing-resistant MFA on custodial accounts, verify every address and network, and treat every unexpected signature request as a financial authorization—not a routine click. If a key is exposed, migrate to a new wallet immediately; changing a password or disconnecting a dapp is not enough.
