Crypto Scam Warning Signs: A Practical Checklist for Fake Brokers and Recovery Services

By TheFinanceBase Team 10 min read

Stop before sending more money if an unsolicited contact promises guaranteed crypto profits, shows a surprisingly easy-to-use trading dashboard, directs you to a wallet they control, or demands a tax or fee before you can withdraw. Those features commonly appear together in fake-broker fraud. After a loss, a second person who promises guaranteed recovery, asks for an upfront payment, or wants your banking and identity data may be running a recovery scam. Save the evidence, end payment conversations, and report promptly rather than trying to unlock a balance that may never have existed.

The quickest way to triage a crypto investment offer

Use this sequence before you click a payment link or approve a wallet transfer. One warning sign deserves independent checking; several together are a reason to stop.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Identify how the contact started. Treat an unknown texter, dating-app match, wrong-number message, social-media contact, or unsolicited caller who introduces an investment as high risk. The FBI and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describe unsolicited messages and online relationships as common entry points to fake investment platforms.
  2. Test the promise. “Guaranteed,” “risk-free,” or unusually high returns are not safety features. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) specifically cite promises of 20–50% returns with little or no risk as examples used by fraudulent sites.
  3. Notice the pressure. A countdown, an expiring opportunity, instructions to keep the deal secret, or advice not to consult family or a financial professional is a manipulation tactic, not due diligence.
  4. Verify the identity independently. Check the exact spelling of the domain, the organisation’s registration and contact details, and whether the app is authentic. Do not use a phone number, email address, or link supplied by the person who approached you.
  5. Assume the screen can be fabricated. A polished website, live chat, video call, mobile app, account balance, or apparent profit does not prove that funds were invested. Fake platforms can generate all of those elements.
  6. Follow the money. A request to convert money and send cryptocurrency to a wallet controlled by a stranger is a direct transfer to the people running the scheme.
  7. Stop at a withdrawal demand. A supposed tax, release charge, compliance deposit, insurance payment, or “temporary” fee to unlock profits is a classic escalation. Do not pay it.

Do not let one reassuring feature cancel several dangerous ones. Fraudsters often combine professional branding, friendly personal contact, and a plausible explanation for every payment.

How a fake crypto broker typically operates

1. Relationship grooming creates trust

The first approach may look unrelated to finance. A stranger starts a conversation, develops a romantic or personal connection, or claims to have contacted you by mistake. Once the relationship feels familiar, the person introduces a trading opportunity or says a relative, mentor, or private group has a special method. The FBI and FTC identify this social entry point because trust can replace verification.

2. The return claim removes the idea of risk

Fraudulent operators frame the opportunity as certain: a guaranteed return, a risk-free trade, or an unusually large profit in a short period. Real investments carry risk. The CFTC and SEC warning is direct: All investments have risk, and investors should question any so-called ‘guaranteed’ return. A claim that you cannot lose is itself a reason to stop, not a reason to invest more.

3. Urgency and secrecy prevent checking

The operator may say that a price, allocation, or invitation expires today. They may insist that telling a partner or adviser will cause you to lose access. This isolates you at the moment when a second opinion would expose a false identity or an implausible return. Delay the decision and speak to someone who has no connection to the promoter.

4. The site supplies a convincing illusion

A fake platform can show deposits, trades, rising balances, and “profits” that are only numbers in a database. A video call or an app download does not change that. The FTC warns that investment sites may look real while the promised investment and account growth are fabricated. A visible balance is not evidence that a blockchain transaction occurred or that you can withdraw.

5. A transfer moves control to the criminals

The instructions may involve buying cryptocurrency at a legitimate exchange and then sending it to a wallet address supplied by the “broker.” The FBI describes this convert-and-transfer flow in its fraud guidance. Once you approve the transfer, the person who controls the destination wallet—not the dashboard you are viewing—controls the asset.

6. A withdrawal problem creates another payment

When you ask for your money, the platform may claim that regulations require a tax, an anti-money-laundering deposit, a verification charge, or a fee to release your profits. It may offer a deadline or threaten to freeze the account. The FBI, FTC, CFTC, and SEC identify demands to pay before withdrawal as part of the fraud pattern. Sending the requested amount does not solve the problem; it signals that another demand may work.

A practical scorecard for any broker or recovery offer

Write down the answers instead of relying on a reassuring conversation. A single unanswered question warrants a pause; several adverse answers mean you should not send money or data.

Check What to verify independently Stop signs
Identity and registration Legal name, physical contact details, and registration claimed by the organisation, confirmed through an official regulator or organisation site The contact will not provide a legal identity, or the details exist only on its own website
Domain and app authenticity Exact URL spelling, domain details, publisher and permissions for an app, and contact information found through an independent search Misspelled or look-alike domain, suspicious download, copied branding, or a contact route that works only through a private message
Return and risk claims Whether the offer explains losses and uncertainty in plain language Guaranteed, risk-free, or 20–50% returns with little or no risk
Contact method Why the person contacted you and whether you can verify that relationship separately Unsolicited message, dating-app introduction, wrong-number text, or social-media approach followed by an investment pitch
Pressure and isolation Time to consider the offer and freedom to consult others Countdowns, secrecy, threats, or instructions not to speak with family or professionals
Wallet and payment flow Who owns the destination wallet and why the payment is necessary Instruction to buy crypto and send it to a stranger-controlled address
Withdrawal conditions Whether you can withdraw without paying an additional amount Tax, release fee, compliance deposit, insurance payment, or repeated requests for more money
Data requested Why identity, bank, or account information is needed and how it will be protected Unnecessary credentials, remote access, copies of identity documents, or bank details demanded before basic verification

How to verify a broker before making a deposit

  1. Stop the conversation long enough to check. Do not click the promoter’s links while researching. Copy the claimed legal name and domain into a separate browser session.
  2. Find the organisation through an independent source. Use the regulator or institution’s official website to locate registration information and contact channels. Call or email using those published details, not the number in a message. Ask whether the firm, domain, representative, and app are genuine.
  3. Inspect the domain and app carefully. Compare every character in the URL, look for an unexpected country or top-level domain, and check the app publisher, permissions, reviews, and update history. A familiar logo is not authentication.
  4. Challenge the economics. Ask how losses are handled, what fees apply before and after a withdrawal, and whether returns are guaranteed. Refusal to discuss risk is a disqualifying answer.
  5. Trace the payment path. Require a clear explanation of who receives each payment. Never send cryptocurrency to a wallet supplied by an unverified individual merely because the dashboard shows a profit.
  6. Get a second opinion. Show the complete message history and proposed payment instructions to a trusted person or a licensed financial professional who is not connected to the promoter. Pressure to decide before that conversation is an additional warning.

What to do when a platform demands a tax or fee to withdraw

Treat the demand as a stop signal. Do not pay a “tax,” “release fee,” “liquidity charge,” “verification deposit,” or any other amount to unlock a displayed balance. Do not keep negotiating payment instructions, and do not borrow money to satisfy the next deadline. The supposed profits may be fabricated, so paying more only increases the loss.

Capture the demand before closing the account or blocking the contact. Save the exact wording, amount, deadline, payment method, wallet address, invoice, and sender details. If you already sent the fee, record that transaction with the rest of the incident; do not assume it was the final request.

Recognising the recovery-service second scam

After a loss, criminals may obtain victims’ names and contact details from prior conversations or public complaint posts. A new caller may claim to be a law firm, tracing company, government employee, exchange investigator, or “recovery expert.” The FBI warns: Do not pay for services that claim to be able to recover lost funds, as these are often scams as well.

Warning signs of a recovery fraud

  • An unsolicited promise of guaranteed or near-guaranteed recovery.
  • An upfront retainer, investigation charge, tax, bond, cryptocurrency deposit, or fee for releasing recovered funds.
  • Requests for bank credentials, wallet seed phrases, exchange passwords, copies of identity documents, or remote access to a device.
  • Communication limited to an encrypted messaging app, a free email address, or a phone number that cannot be verified through an official organisation site.
  • An implausible office address, copied legal language, fabricated case number, or pressure to pay several “final” fees.
  • Instructions to keep the recovery confidential or to avoid reporting the original fraud.

Verify any claimed agency, attorney, broker, or exchange yourself. Locate the organisation’s official website independently, then use its published switchboard or directory to ask whether the person and case exist. Never treat a logo, a badge image, a case document, or a caller ID as proof.

If you have already sent money or personal information

1. Stop additional payments

End conversations about deposits, taxes, fees, and recovery payments. Do not warn the scammer that you are reporting; simply stop providing instructions and funds. If a bank transfer, card payment, or exchange transaction is still pending, contact the institution immediately through its official number and ask what reversal or fraud-control options remain.

3. Report promptly

Submit the details to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). Depending on the facts and your location, also report to the FTC, CFTC, SEC, and local law enforcement. Include the full timeline and transaction data rather than only the amount lost. The FBI specifically requests transaction and contact details in IC3 reports.

4. Secure accounts and identity

If you shared a password, change it immediately anywhere it was reused, starting with email and financial accounts. Enable multifactor authentication, review active sessions and recovery addresses, and contact your bank or exchange about suspicious access. Monitor statements, credit activity, and new account notices. Agencies warn that recovery scammers may reuse submitted contact and financial information in follow-on fraud.

5. Be realistic about recovery

Reporting supplies investigators with usable information, but no agency promises that funds will be recovered. Private recovery services have no reliable industry-wide success rate published by the agencies cited here. Do not interpret a report, a blockchain trace, or a claimed referral as a guarantee of repayment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why fast reporting and precise transaction data matter

Investigators need identifiers that distinguish your case from thousands of similar complaints. A useful report connects the first contact to each payment and preserves the technical details that can be checked. Assemble these items in chronological order:

  • Date and time of every contact, payment, withdrawal request, and fee demand.
  • Names, aliases, usernames, phone numbers, email addresses, and profile links used by the contacts.
  • Every domain, app name, wallet address, transaction hash, exchange, payment processor, and bank account involved.
  • Asset type, amount, currency, and whether the amount was requested, sent, or displayed only on the platform.
  • Copies of contracts, invoices, identity claims, screenshots of balances, and messages describing guarantees or deadlines.
  • The personal, bank, or account information you disclosed and the security steps you have taken since.

In January 2025, the FBI’s Operation Level Up reported notifying more than 4,300 potential victims and estimating $285 million saved. That effort illustrates why an early warning can prevent a second payment, even when money already sent cannot be recovered.

The scale of the problem

Source and reporting period Reported figure Qualification
FBI, 2023 losses; released September 9, 2024 More than $5.6 billion in cryptocurrency-fraud losses 45% higher than the FBI’s 2022 figure
FTC, 2023 losses; stated in a July 2024 consumer alert $4.6 billion in reported investment-scam losses Investment scams across the FTC’s reporting scope, not a measure of one platform or one service
FBI Operation Level Up, through January 2025 More than 4,300 potential victims notified; an estimated $285 million saved Estimated funds prevented from further loss through notifications, not money recovered from every prior victim

The rules worth remembering

  • A guaranteed high return with little or no risk is a fraud warning.
  • A realistic website, dashboard, video call, or app can be fabricated.
  • Paying a tax or fee to withdraw supposed crypto profits is a classic escalation tactic.
  • A person who appears after your loss and guarantees recovery may be running a second scam.
  • Fast reporting with wallet and transaction data gives investigators actionable information, although no agency promises recovery.
