Inheriting cryptocurrency generally does not create federal income tax when you receive it. The critical tax number is usually your inherited basis: under Internal Revenue Code §1014, property acquired from a decedent generally receives a basis equal to its fair market value at the decedent’s death, unless the estate validly uses an alternate valuation date. You owe tax later if you sell, exchange, or otherwise dispose of the crypto for more or less than that basis.
Your result depends on records. Obtain the executor’s estate valuation, Form 8971 and Schedule A when issued, wallet and exchange histories, the asset quantity at death, and the pricing method used. Keep separate records for staking, mining, forks, airdrops, or other activity that may create income after the estate acquired or distributed the assets.

What tax applies when you inherit crypto?
For U.S. federal income-tax purposes, receiving inherited Bitcoin, ether, stablecoins, tokens, or other digital assets is generally not itself taxable income. The inheritance can still be relevant to an estate-tax return, and your state may impose an inheritance or estate tax under rules that are separate from federal income tax.
Federal income tax at receipt
Section 1014 generally sets the beneficiary’s initial basis at the property’s fair market value on the decedent’s date of death. The statute describes the basis as “the fair market value of the property at the date of the decedent’s death.” If the executor elects an alternate valuation date for an estate-tax return, the applicable valuation date can instead control. Do not substitute the date the coins were transferred to you or the current exchange quote.

Estate and inheritance taxes are different questions
An estate may have to file an estate-tax return, and a state may impose an estate or inheritance tax even when no federal income tax is due at receipt. The federal rules discussed here do not determine your state liability. Check the law where the decedent lived, where the estate is administered, and where you live. Community-property rules and whether the asset is included in the decedent’s estate can also affect the basis result.
How the inherited basis is established
Date-of-death fair market value
The executor must identify the asset, quantity, and value at the relevant date and time. Crypto trades continuously across venues, so a defensible valuation file should state the exchange, index, pricing methodology, currency conversion, time zone, and the exact timestamp used. A price observed today is not evidence of the value on the death date.
Alternate valuation and estate inclusion
If the estate validly elects an alternate valuation date, use the value reported for that date rather than automatically using the death-date quote. Ask the executor whether an election was made and which assets it covered. A blanket “step-up” assumption is unsafe if the asset was not included in the decedent’s estate, if a special ownership rule applies, or if the estate documents establish a different statutory basis.

Consistent-basis information from the executor
When an estate files the applicable estate-tax forms, Form 8971 and its Schedule A communicate estate-tax value and basis information to beneficiaries. The IRS instructions state that “Schedule A provides basis information to beneficiaries who acquire certain property from the decedent.” A beneficiary subject to the consistent-basis rule generally cannot claim an initial basis higher than the amount reported on Schedule A. Preserve the form even if you do not sell immediately; it is the executor’s principal written statement of the reported value.

Documents to request before moving the coins
Ask the executor or trustee for a complete package before transferring assets between wallets. Make the request in writing and save the response with the estate records.
| Document or record | What it establishes | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Death certificate and probate or trust documents | The relevant date, ownership, and your authority to receive the assets | Which entity owned the wallet or exchange account, and who controlled the keys? |
| Estate inventory and distribution schedule | Asset names, quantities, values, and what was distributed to you | Does the inventory reconcile to every wallet and exchange statement? |
| Form 706 status, Form 8971, and Schedule A, when issued | Estate-tax reporting and the basis value communicated to beneficiaries | Was an alternate valuation election made? Which lot or asset does each Schedule A entry describe? |
| Date-of-death appraisal or valuation memorandum | The method used to calculate fair market value | Which venue, index, time zone, liquidity assumption, and currency conversion were used? |
| Wallet addresses, exchange statements, and transaction exports | Control, quantity, acquisition history, transfers, and later dispositions | Are exports complete, including deposits, withdrawals, fees, and failed transactions? |
| Distribution records | When and how the estate delivered the assets | Was the transfer an in-kind distribution, a sale followed by cash distribution, or an internal wallet move? |
| Fiduciary return and Schedule K-1, if applicable | Income earned while the estate held the assets | Did staking, lending, mining, trading, or other activity produce reportable income before distribution? |
Do not move coins until you have recorded the originating wallet addresses and the transaction identifiers. A transfer between wallets is not automatically a sale, but an incomplete audit trail can make it difficult to prove that no taxable disposition occurred.
Build an evidence file for the inherited crypto
Create one folder for the estate and one subfolder for each asset or wallet. Keep original downloads as well as a read-only copy of any spreadsheet you use for calculations.

Reporting a later sale or exchange
A later sale, exchange, or other disposition is a separate tax event. Your starting basis is the inherited basis established under the estate records, adjusted for documented post-inheritance events. Report the disposition on Form 8949 and summarize it on Schedule D. Answer the digital-asset question on the applicable federal return accurately; an inheritance does not make a later sale disappear from that question.
- Freeze the death-date snapshot. List every asset, quantity, wallet or exchange, valuation date and time, and dollar-price source.
- Reconcile the snapshot. Compare your list with the executor’s inventory, estate valuation, and Form 8971/Schedule A when applicable. Investigate every difference before calculating gain or loss.
- Document distribution and transfers. Record the estate-to-beneficiary transaction and each later wallet transfer. A transfer alone is not the same as a sale, but it must be traceable.
- Match the sold units to basis. Identify which inherited units were disposed of, subtract their documented basis from the proceeds, and account for transaction fees or other documented adjustments under the applicable rules.
- Complete Form 8949 and Schedule D. Enter the proceeds, basis, dates, and resulting gain or loss for each reportable disposition, then carry the totals to Schedule D.
- Keep the supporting file. Retain exchange confirmations, blockchain transaction IDs, wallet exports, price evidence, and the executor’s basis statement with the filed return.
Illustrative calculation
Assume an estate reports a beneficiary’s 0.5 unit of a cryptocurrency at an inherited basis of $40,000. If the beneficiary later sells that same lot for $47,500, the preliminary difference is a $7,500 gain before any documented fee adjustment. If the proceeds are $35,000, the preliminary difference is a $5,000 loss. These figures are an illustration of the calculation, not a valuation of any particular asset.
Income created after death or after distribution
Crypto can produce taxable income without a sale. Staking rewards, mining proceeds, forked assets, airdrops, lending returns, and some decentralized-finance activity may require ordinary-income reporting and forms such as Schedule 1 or another applicable schedule. The correct treatment depends on the event and when the income was earned.
Separate estate-period income from beneficiary-period income
Determine whether the estate or the beneficiary controlled the asset when the reward or proceeds arose. Income earned while the estate held the asset may appear on a fiduciary return or Schedule K-1. Income earned after distribution generally belongs in the beneficiary’s records and return. Keep the event date, units received, dollar value used, and later disposition details.

Forks, airdrops, and new tokens
Do not add a newly received token to the inherited lot without documenting why it was received and the value assigned at receipt. A fork or airdrop can create a separate tax question from the original inherited asset and may require a different basis and holding record.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When records do not match
The executor’s value is higher than your spreadsheet
First check whether the difference comes from an alternate valuation date, a different quantity, a wrapped or bridged version of the token, or a fee convention. If Form 8971 and Schedule A apply, treat the reported basis as the controlling starting point for a beneficiary subject to the consistent-basis rule. Ask the executor to correct an error rather than changing your own file without explanation.
You have a wallet balance but no acquisition history
Preserve the address and blockchain history, obtain exchange records from the estate, and document every assumption. Do not claim a zero basis merely because the original purchase record is missing. A tax professional may need to reconstruct lots from on-chain and custodial data.
The estate sold the crypto before distributing cash
That is not an inherited-crypto sale by the beneficiary. Determine whether the estate recognized the disposition and whether the resulting income or loss was reported on the estate’s fiduciary return or passed through on a Schedule K-1. Keep the estate’s sale confirmation and distribution statement.

You moved the coins to a new wallet
A wallet-to-wallet transfer generally is not itself a sale, but preserve both addresses, the transaction ID, the date, the network, and any fee. A later exchange, swap, or conversion can be a disposition even if no dollars were withdrawn.
State, international, and cross-border considerations
Federal basis rules do not resolve state inheritance or estate taxes. A state may use different exemptions, filing thresholds, or beneficiary classifications. Obtain advice for the decedent’s domicile, the estate’s administration state, and any state where you are resident.
Foreign rules can be materially different. HM Revenue & Customs states in its Cryptoassets Manual that “Cryptoassets are treated as assets of a person’s estate in much the same way as bank accounts, property, shares, and investments.” Its inheritance-tax guidance uses a date-of-death value for the inheritance-tax return. That illustrates why a U.S. federal result should not be exported to another country without local advice.

Simple estates may be manageable with organized records, but complexity rises quickly when digital assets span multiple custodians or produce income. Use the following decision points.
| Situation | Why professional help is prudent |
|---|---|
| Form 706, Form 8971, or Schedule A is involved | The estate-tax valuation and consistent-basis rules must agree with the beneficiary’s return. |
| Many wallets, exchanges, or chains | Lot identification, transfers, fees, and duplicate records are harder to reconcile. |
| Staking, mining, DeFi, lending, forks, or airdrops | Income character and timing may differ from a simple sale. |
| No reliable date-of-death price evidence | An accountant or appraiser can document a defensible valuation method. |
| State, foreign, or community-property exposure | Federal guidance alone may not determine the filing or basis result. |
A certified public accountant or enrolled agent experienced with digital assets can prepare income and fiduciary filings; an estate attorney can address ownership, probate, estate inclusion, and state-law questions. Give the adviser your evidence file, not just a final account balance.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Reporting the inheritance itself as ordinary income without checking the applicable estate and income rules.
- Using the date you received the coins, a current exchange quote, or an average annual price instead of the relevant valuation date.
- Claiming a basis higher than the executor’s Schedule A when the consistent-basis rule applies.
- Discarding wallet addresses, transaction IDs, or exchange exports after the coins are moved.
- Combining staking, mining, fork, airdrop, and sale records into one basis number.
- Assuming a federal answer settles state inheritance or estate tax.
- Treating every wallet transfer as a sale—or assuming every swap is tax-free because no cash was withdrawn.
A practical handoff checklist
- Obtain the death certificate, estate inventory, distribution records, and Form 706 status.
- Request Form 8971 and Schedule A if issued, plus the date-of-death or alternate-date valuation workpapers.
- Export wallet and exchange histories and preserve addresses, transaction IDs, quantities, timestamps, and fees.
- Build and reconcile the death-date snapshot to the executor’s reported values.
- Record each distribution and later transfer before any sale or exchange.
- Separate post-death income events from capital dispositions.
- Prepare Form 8949 and Schedule D for sales or exchanges, and the other applicable schedules for income.
- Review state and cross-border obligations before filing.
