Configure those controls before depositing significant funds, then keep backup factors offline and review account activity regularly.

Configure the protections in this order
Work from account takeover prevention to damage containment. If an attacker obtains your password, the later controls should still prevent or delay a withdrawal.
- Change the password to a long, unique value generated and stored by a password manager.
- Register phishing-resistant sign-in 2FA: a passkey or FIDO2/WebAuthn security key.
- Add a genuine backup factor, such as a second security key or a passkey paired with a security-key backup.
- Secure the email account used by the exchange with its own 2FA and a unique password.
- Enable withdrawal-address allowlisting and learn its hold period before you need to transfer funds.
- Turn on funding or transaction 2FA for deposits and withdrawals when the exchange offers it.
- Apply a settings lock that delays changes to security settings and withdrawal addresses.
- Set an anti-phishing marker, review sessions and devices, and use only official access paths.
- Harden the device from which you sign in.
Do not wait until after a suspicious login to configure these controls. A whitelist hold or settings-lock delay is useful only if it is already active.

Use a unique password that cannot be reused elsewhere
Kraken recommends at least 15 characters and no reuse. A password manager can generate a random password, store it, and fill it only on the legitimate exchange domain. Do not adapt an old email, banking or social-media password by adding a number or symbol; reuse lets one unrelated breach become an exchange-account breach.
Set up the password safely
- Open the exchange through its official app or a bookmark you created yourself.
- Navigate to the account security or password page and create a new random password of at least 15 characters.
- Save it in your password manager, not in a notes app, screenshot folder or browser profile shared with other people.
- Sign out of other sessions if the exchange offers that option, then test the new password once before closing the manager.
Your password manager account is now part of the security boundary. Protect it with its own long, unique password and phishing-resistant 2FA where available.
Prefer a passkey or hardware security key for 2FA
Passkeys and FIDO2/WebAuthn hardware keys authenticate the legitimate site or app rather than handing a reusable code to a phishing page. Kraken describes passkeys as using phishing-resistant FIDO2 security. Coinbase identifies two security keys as its “Highest security” option and supports WebAuthn/FIDO2-compatible keys, including YubiKey-type devices.

Passkeys
A passkey is stored on a compatible phone, computer or password-manager platform and unlocked with the device’s biometrics or screen lock. Add it from the exchange’s security settings, then approve a test sign-in from a trusted device. Because the passkey is tied to the real service, a look-alike domain cannot simply capture a code and replay it.
Hardware security keys
A hardware key is a physical FIDO2/U2F device that you tap or insert during sign-in. Register two keys: keep one with you and store the second in a separate secure location. A hardware key avoids dependence on cellular service and keeps the credential separate from the computer you use to browse. Kraken describes a hardware key as its most secure funding-2FA method.
Rank #2
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Authenticator apps and SMS
If your exchange or device cannot use a passkey or security key, an authenticator app is a stronger fallback than relying on a reusable SMS code. Save the app’s recovery codes offline, because losing the phone without those codes can lock you out. SMS and TOTP codes are still useful account controls, but they are not phishing-resistant in the same way as a passkey or FIDO2 key: a criminal can ask you to read a code into a fake sign-in page.
Build recovery before you need it
Security that cannot be recovered can become a self-inflicted lockout. Register a second key or pair a passkey with a security-key backup before moving funds. Store backup keys and authenticator recovery codes offline in a location protected from theft, fire and unauthorized household access.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Keep the backup factor physically separate from the primary device.
- Do not photograph recovery codes or store them in cloud-synced notes.
- Record which device or key is registered, without recording the secret itself in an insecure document.
- Test the backup sign-in method while you can still access the account normally.
Do not remove the old factor until the new one has been tested. If an exchange requires support review for factor replacement, expect delays and keep enough information to prove ownership through its official process.
Secure the email account that controls exchange recovery
An attacker who controls your email may reset an exchange password, intercept alerts or impersonate support. Coinbase explicitly advises enabling 2FA on the personal email account, and Binance recommends using a secure or dedicated email address.
Email-account settings
- Use an email address dedicated to financial accounts if practical.
- Give it a unique password that is not stored in a shared browser profile.
- Enable the email provider’s strongest available 2FA, preferably a passkey or hardware key.
- Review forwarding rules, recovery addresses, logged-in sessions and connected applications.
- Do not approve an unexpected password-reset message; open the provider directly through its official app or bookmarked site.
Keep exchange notifications enabled. A sudden password, 2FA, API or withdrawal-address alert is an early warning that should trigger an immediate response.

Contain withdrawals with allowlisting and transaction controls
Sign-in protection stops many takeovers, but withdrawal controls limit what an attacker can do after a password or session is compromised.
Withdrawal-address allowlisting
Allowlisting restricts withdrawals to addresses you have saved in advance. Coinbase says a newly added address is subject to a 48-hour hold before it can be used. Binance describes a whitelist-only mode that blocks withdrawals to addresses outside the approved list.
- Open the exchange’s withdrawal, address-book or security section.
- Enable allowlisting or whitelist-only withdrawals.
- Add each destination carefully, checking the network and full address on a trusted device.
- Apply a recognizable label and, where available, require 2FA for adding or editing an address.
- Wait through the exchange’s stated hold period before assuming the address is ready.
Allowlisting introduces operational friction: a legitimate transfer to a new wallet may be delayed. Keep a small amount of spending liquidity on an approved destination rather than disabling the control whenever you need speed.
Funding or transaction 2FA
Some exchanges separate sign-in 2FA from funding 2FA for deposits and withdrawals. Kraken supports funding 2FA. This extra approval is valuable because a stolen session does not automatically authorize a transfer. Check whether your exchange requires sign-in 2FA or a settings lock for funding 2FA to remain effective; Kraken states that one of those protections is required.
Settings locks and delayed changes
Kraken’s Global Settings Lock blocks changes to account settings and withdrawal addresses for a chosen delay of 1 to 30 days, with a default of 3 days. A delay gives you time to notice an attacker’s password or email change before a new address becomes usable. Choose a delay that you can live with operationally; a longer delay improves containment but can slow legitimate recovery and address changes.

| Control | What it protects | Important trade-off or dependency |
|---|---|---|
| Address allowlisting | Restricts withdrawals to saved destinations | New addresses may be unusable during a hold; Coinbase documents 48 hours |
| Funding 2FA | Adds approval to deposits and withdrawals | May require sign-in 2FA or a settings lock to stay active |

Add an anti-phishing marker to official messages
Binance’s anti-phishing code appears in genuine Binance emails. Set a marker that an impersonator is unlikely to know, then treat any message without the expected marker as suspicious. A marker does not make links safe: never sign in from an unsolicited email, and do not disclose a password, 2FA code or recovery phrase to someone claiming to be support.
Review sessions, devices and IP activity
Open the exchange’s recognized-device, active-session or login-history page at setup and on a regular schedule. Compare device names, approximate locations, times and IP activity with your own use. Revoke every unfamiliar session rather than trying to identify an attacker from a single detail.
If you find an unfamiliar session
- Use a clean, trusted device to change the exchange password.
- Change the email-account password and revoke unknown email sessions or applications.
- Disable unfamiliar API keys, trading permissions and withdrawal destinations.
- Confirm that allowlisting, funding 2FA and the settings lock are still enabled.
- Contact the exchange through its official support channel and provide the relevant time and account alerts.
Do not continue chatting with a person who contacted you through social media or an unsolicited phone number. Impersonators often use the urgency created by a suspicious-login alert to obtain the remaining factor.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use only official apps and bookmarked sites
Kraken warns that fake apps and impersonators ask for sign-in details. Install the exchange app from the platform’s official store listing, verify the publisher, and update it through the store. For a browser, type the address yourself once, verify the domain and save a bookmark. Avoid search advertisements, shortened links, QR codes from strangers and links in direct messages.
Check the address bar before entering credentials. A padlock alone does not prove that a site belongs to your exchange; the domain name must be correct. If a page asks for a recovery phrase, remote-access software or a one-time code while you are not actively signing in, stop.

Harden the device you use to sign in
Binance advises using device passcodes, avoiding untrusted software and keeping antivirus updated. Never enter exchange credentials on a shared, rooted or compromised device. Install operating-system and browser updates promptly, lock the screen when unattended and remove extensions you do not recognize.
- Use a separate user profile for financial activity when possible.
- Disable automatic password display or clipboard history on shared computers.
- Do not connect a hardware key to a computer you suspect is infected; use a trusted device instead.
- Keep phone-number recovery protected, since control of a phone account can weaken SMS-based recovery.
- Do not install “support” software at the request of an unsolicited caller.
Exchange controls differ by account and jurisdiction
The same label can describe different protections. Confirm whether a setting applies to sign-in only, trading, API access, deposits, withdrawals or all account changes. The following documented examples show why checking the account’s own help text matters.
| Exchange guidance | Documented setting or figure | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|
| Kraken | At least 15-character unique password; passkeys use FIDO2; Global Settings Lock delays changes 1–30 days, default 3; funding 2FA is available | Use the password, passkey or key, funding 2FA and lock together; verify dependencies in your account |
| Coinbase | Two security keys are labeled “Highest security”; WebAuthn/FIDO2 keys are supported; a newly allowlisted address has a 48-hour hold | Register a primary and backup key and plan transfers around the hold |
| Binance | Secure or dedicated email, anti-phishing code, whitelist-only withdrawals and device-security guidance | Set the email and marker first, then enable whitelist-only withdrawals and secure the endpoint |
These labels and policies can change. Read the current help page shown for your region and account tier before relying on a particular delay or requirement.

Speed matters, but use a trusted device and official channels so the response does not create another compromise.
- Disconnect the suspected device from the network and stop entering credentials on it.
- From a clean device, revoke exchange sessions, change the exchange password and disable unknown API keys.
- Secure the email account, revoke unfamiliar sessions and inspect forwarding or recovery changes.
- Freeze or remove unauthorized withdrawal addresses and confirm the settings lock and allowlist status.
- Contact official exchange support immediately. Include timestamps, transaction IDs and alert emails, but never send a password, recovery code or private key.
- Notify your bank or payment provider if linked accounts may also be affected.
- Preserve evidence, including screenshots and headers, without opening suspicious links again.
Crypto transfers are often irreversible, so prevention and rapid containment are more dependable than expecting a completed withdrawal to be reversed.
Monthly security-maintenance checklist
- Check active sessions, recognized devices and IP activity.
- Confirm that the password remains unique and that the password manager is locked.
- Test the backup passkey or security key without deleting the primary factor.
- Verify allowlisted addresses and remove destinations you no longer control.
- Review API keys, trading permissions, email forwarding and recovery settings.
- Confirm the anti-phishing marker still matches genuine messages.
- Install operating-system, browser, app and antivirus updates.
- Review whether your exchange has changed hold periods, lock behavior or menu names.
As Kraken puts it: “No amount of security on our end can make up for weak personal security.” Your exchange can provide strong controls, but the password manager, email account, recovery factors and devices you operate determine whether those controls remain effective.
