Crunchbase confirmed a cybersecurity incident and data breach after ShinyHunters claimed it had stolen data from the business-information platform. The confirmation was reported on January 26, 2026, amid a wider campaign that also targeted companies including Betterment and SoundCloud. The precise number of affected people, the full data categories involved, and any notification obligations remain unclear.

The available reporting supports a confirmed incident, but not every claim made by the attackers. In particular, the alleged size of the dataset and the identities of all affected individuals have not been independently verified.

What Crunchbase confirmed

SecurityWeek reported that Crunchbase confirmed a breach following hacking claims by ShinyHunters. The company reportedly confirmed that attackers exfiltrated certain corporate documents and other data. Available coverage does not provide a detailed first-party incident notice, technical report, or complete list of affected data fields.

A January 24 date appearing in a secondary incident roundup may refer to alleged activity or leak-site listing. The reported publication date for the confirmed-breach coverage is January 26, 2026, so those dates should not be treated as interchangeable.

No operational outage was reported in the available coverage. That does not establish that every Crunchbase system was unaffected: data can be copied or accessed while a service remains online.

What ShinyHunters claimed

ShinyHunters publicly claimed responsibility and reportedly listed Crunchbase among its targets. A secondary January roundup repeated an allegation that more than two million personal and business records were involved.

That figure should be treated as an attacker or secondary-reporting claim, not a verified impact total. “Records” may include company entries, historical snapshots, duplicated contacts, or records that do not correspond to unique people. The available evidence does not establish that more than two million individuals were affected.

A leak-site listing is also not proof that an entire dataset was published. The stronger evidence in this case is the reported company confirmation of an incident, while the attackers’ claimed record count and data contents remain uncertain.

Who was behind the attack?

ShinyHunters was the public-facing claimant. Security researchers associated the wider activity with Scattered LAPSUS$ Hunters, a label reflecting activity linked to Lapsus$, Scattered Spider, and ShinyHunters.

This is campaign-level attribution, not definitive forensic proof that a particular individual or organization carried out every action against Crunchbase. No responsible account should present the attribution as a law-enforcement finding.

How the wider campaign reportedly worked

Reporting from SecurityWeek, citing context from Silent Push, Okta, Hudson Rock, and Mandiant, described a campaign built around identity attacks rather than a conventional software exploit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Voice phishing: Attackers reportedly called employees and attempted to persuade them to disclose credentials, provide one-time passcodes, or approve authentication requests.
  • Single sign-on access: Targets included employees with access to Okta and other identity platforms.
  • SaaS pivoting: After gaining valid access, attackers reportedly moved into cloud applications and business systems.
  • Data exfiltration: Information could then be removed through legitimate sessions, APIs, connected applications, or other authorized access paths.

This attack path matters because it may leave fewer of the warning signs associated with malware or ransomware. It also means that blocking a single malicious file is not enough: organizations need strong identity controls, session monitoring, application authorization, and detailed SaaS audit logs.

  • MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
  • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts

Mandiant recommended phishing-resistant multifactor authentication, including FIDO2 security keys or passkeys, for this type of threat. The broader campaign’s reported methods should not automatically be treated as a conclusively proven technical account of the Crunchbase intrusion.

What information may be at risk?

The confirmed reporting supports a cautious description: corporate documents and other data were reportedly exfiltrated. Depending on what was accessed, the potential exposure could involve:

  • Business and professional contact information.
  • Company, customer, prospecting, or account data.
  • Information about companies and individuals listed in Crunchbase.
  • Funding, ownership, corporate-development, or commercial records.
  • Internal documents belonging to Crunchbase or its business partners.

These are risk categories, not confirmed fields. The available reporting does not establish that Crunchbase passwords, payment-card data, Social Security numbers, authentication tokens, or other authentication secrets were exposed. It also does not establish whether the alleged dataset contained unique records, historical copies, or publicly available information gathered in bulk.

Publicly available information can still be sensitive in aggregate. A combined dataset can make impersonation, spear-phishing, competitive intelligence, and fraudulent business requests more convincing even when individual data points were previously visible elsewhere.

Who could be affected?

Crunchbase account users

Users could face password-reuse, phishing, or account-targeting risks if account or contact information was included. There is not enough verified information to say that every account holder was affected or that account credentials were exposed.

Companies and people listed in Crunchbase

Their business information may have been copied, assembled, or repackaged. A listing alone does not prove that an individual suffered a full identity breach, but it can provide useful material for targeted fraud.

Customers using Crunchbase data

Customers that use the platform for prospecting, market intelligence, or research could face exposure of saved searches, contact data, commercial records, or related business information if those environments were included in the incident.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Employees and contractors

Corporate documents could create separate risks for Crunchbase personnel, including impersonation, confidentiality loss, and follow-on targeting.

What potentially affected users should do

  1. Change any reused password. If a Crunchbase password was used anywhere else, change it on every reused service. Use a unique password for each account.
  2. Turn on stronger MFA. Prefer passkeys or FIDO2 security keys. An authenticator app is generally safer than SMS, but phishing-resistant MFA provides stronger protection against identity attacks.
  3. Review sessions and connected apps. Check account activity, browser devices, active sessions, API tokens, and third-party integrations. Revoke anything unfamiliar.
  4. Expect targeted phishing. Be cautious with messages about account verification, funding announcements, investment opportunities, refunds, customer support, recruiting, or data downloads.
  5. Verify financial requests independently. Use a known phone number or an established communication channel before changing payment details or sending money. Do not simply reply to the message that made the request.
  6. Monitor business identity abuse. Companies should watch for fraudulent vendor-payment, procurement, recruiting, investment, and executive-impersonation requests.
  7. Do not download alleged leaked files. They may contain malware, stolen credentials, or unlawfully distributed personal information.
  8. Follow official notices. Do not assume that a social-media post or leak-site screenshot identifies the data exposed. Wait for guidance from Crunchbase or a relevant regulator before treating a particular data category as confirmed.

What remains unknown

The accessible reporting does not resolve:

  • The exact number of affected individuals, companies, accounts, or records.
  • The specific data fields contained in the exfiltrated material.
  • Whether passwords, access tokens, or payment information were exposed.
  • Whether the alleged dataset was fully published, partially sampled, or merely advertised.
  • Whether regulators or law enforcement were notified.
  • Whether a ransom was demanded or paid.
  • Whether Crunchbase will provide individual notification, credit monitoring, or other assistance.

Those are evidence limits, not proof that the information was safe. They are also why the alleged two-million-record figure should not be used as a confirmed breach total.

Why the incident matters

The main risk is not necessarily downtime. A business-information platform can hold or connect professional relationships, company histories, funding information, customer data, and internal documents. Losing confidentiality can enable fraud and extortion even when the public website continues operating normally.

The wider campaign also illustrates why SaaS security is an identity problem as much as a network problem. Phishing-resistant MFA, least-privilege access, controls over connected applications, rapid session revocation, and comprehensive audit logging can limit the damage after an employee is targeted by a convincing phone call.

For now, the most accurate conclusion is narrow: Crunchbase confirmed a breach after ShinyHunters hacking claims, but the full scope and contents of the data exposure remain unverified in the available reporting. Users should strengthen account security and treat follow-on business or support messages as potential phishing attempts without assuming that every claimed detail of the incident is established.
