CrowdStrike vs. Palo Alto Networks: How to Compare Cybersecurity Stocks

There is no defensible winner from the latest operating figures alone. CrowdStrike and Palo Alto Networks both reported results for the quarter ended July 31, 2026, but the releases cover different fiscal periods: CrowdStrike’s second quarter of fiscal 2027 and Palo Alto Networks’ fourth quarter and full fiscal year 2026. A useful stock comparison therefore has to align the periods, separate GAAP from adjusted results, understand that their recurring-revenue measures have different scopes, and then add same-date valuation data that is not included in these releases.

What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you

The latest reports show two large cybersecurity businesses growing and generating cash, but company-reported growth does not by itself establish which stock is better, safer or cheaper. Those judgments depend on the price paid, diluted share count, cash and debt, expected future earnings or cash flow, and the investor’s objective.

The source dates matter. CrowdStrike’s release was published August 26, 2026, and Palo Alto Networks’ release September 1, 2026. Both report a period ending July 31, 2026, but CrowdStrike’s fiscal year ends January 31 while Palo Alto Networks’ fiscal year ends July 31. Their annual-report filing pages document those different calendars: CrowdStrike’s FY2026 Form 10-K and Palo Alto Networks’ FY2026 Form 10-K.

First align the fiscal periods

Putting a quarterly figure from one company beside a full-year figure from the other can create a false impression of scale or profitability. Start by labeling both the fiscal period and its duration.

Company Reported period Period end Duration Primary figures available
CrowdStrike Q2 fiscal 2027 July 31, 2026 Three months Revenue, ending ARR, operating income or loss, operating cash flow and free cash flow
Palo Alto Networks Q4 and full fiscal 2026 July 31, 2026 Three months for Q4; 12 months for FY2026 Q4 revenue and NGS ARR; full-year operating income, net income and cash-flow measures

The quarter-end date makes the releases useful for a snapshot of momentum, but it does not make every number comparable. CrowdStrike’s quarterly cash flow cannot be judged directly against Palo Alto Networks’ annual cash flow. Likewise, CrowdStrike’s Q2 operating income is not a same-duration comparison with Palo Alto Networks’ FY2026 operating income.

Compare growth quality, not just headline percentages

Revenue growth

CrowdStrike reported Q2 fiscal 2027 revenue of $1.47 billion, an increase of 26% year over year. Palo Alto Networks reported Q4 fiscal 2026 revenue of $3.41 billion, up 34% year over year. Both are quarterly figures, so the duration is aligned here, although quarter mix, contract timing and company-specific seasonality can still affect the comparison. The figures come from the companies’ respective releases: CrowdStrike’s Q2 fiscal 2027 results and Palo Alto Networks’ Q4 and FY2026 results.

Measure CrowdStrike Q2 FY2027 Palo Alto Networks Q4 FY2026 How to read it
Quarterly revenue $1.47 billion $3.41 billion Same three-month period ending July 31, 2026; absolute size is not a valuation measure.
Year-over-year revenue growth 26% 34% Different product mixes and contract structures can influence the rate.
Recurring-revenue indicator Ending ARR of $5.84 billion, up 25% NGS ARR of $9.10 billion, up 63% These are not identically defined metrics; scope must be examined before ranking them.

Recurring-revenue metrics have different definitions

CrowdStrike reported ending annual recurring revenue of $5.84 billion, up 25% year over year, as of July 31, 2026. Palo Alto Networks reported $9.10 billion of next-generation security annual recurring revenue, or NGS ARR, up 63%. Palo Alto Networks defines NGS ARR using annualized allocated revenue from active contracts in its next-generation portfolio, subject to stated exclusions. That is not the same named metric as CrowdStrike ARR.

Consequently, the dollar totals should not be treated as market share, and the growth rates should not be interpreted as an apples-to-apples contest without reconciling scope. When reviewing the releases, ask:

A recurring-revenue figure is most useful when paired with retention, customer concentration, bookings or remaining performance obligations. Those additional measures are not established in the supplied releases, so they should be collected separately rather than inferred from ARR growth.

Management commentary is not an operating result

Management described the quarter in strong terms. CrowdStrike founder and chief executive George Kurtz said, “Q2 was the best quarter in CrowdStrike’s history.” Palo Alto Networks chairman and chief executive Nikesh Arora said, “The latest advancements in AI are elevating cybersecurity to the top of the CIO priority list, and will serve as durable tailwinds as we progress towards our $20 billion FY30 NGS ARR target.” These are management statements and a management target, not independent forecasts or achieved results.

Use GAAP results as the anchor

GAAP operating income or loss provides the starting point because it follows the applicable accounting rules. Adjusted or non-GAAP figures can help identify operating trends, but each company chooses its own exclusions.

Operating result CrowdStrike Q2 FY2027 Palo Alto Networks FY2026 Period warning
GAAP operating income (loss) $(33.2) million $695 million CrowdStrike figure covers one quarter; Palo Alto Networks figure covers 12 months.
Non-GAAP operating income $371.6 million $3.356 billion Both are adjusted figures, but the definitions and durations differ.
GAAP net income Not stated in the supplied comparison figures $307 million for FY2026 Do not substitute adjusted net income for GAAP net income.
Non-GAAP net income Not stated in the supplied comparison figures $2.931 billion for FY2026 The difference from GAAP illustrates the effect of exclusions.

For CrowdStrike, the reported quarterly GAAP operating loss is approximately 2.3% of quarterly revenue, while non-GAAP operating income is approximately 25.3% of revenue. Those percentages are arithmetic derived from the reported Q2 figures and should not be compared with Palo Alto Networks’ full-year dollar amounts. A Palo Alto Networks FY2026 operating margin would require the corresponding full-year revenue denominator; the supplied figures do not provide that denominator, so it should not be guessed.

Read the reconciliation, especially stock compensation

CrowdStrike’s Q2 reconciliation shows $399.0 million of stock-based compensation expense and related employer payroll taxes. Palo Alto Networks lists $1.712 billion of share-based-compensation-related charges among its FY2026 non-GAAP operating-income adjustments. These costs are excluded from adjusted results, but shareholders still face their economic effects through expense, dilution or both.

The practical comparison is not “GAAP bad, adjusted good.” Instead, examine:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Which expenses are removed from operating income?
  • Are the exclusions recurring, tied to ongoing employee compensation, or genuinely unusual?
  • How does the adjustment change operating margin and net income?
  • Does the company disclose the same categories consistently from period to period?

Palo Alto Networks explicitly cautions that its non-GAAP measures are not standardized and may not be directly comparable with similarly named measures at other companies. That warning applies to cross-company comparisons generally. Keep a GAAP column in every worksheet, then use adjusted figures as a supplemental view.

Compare cash generation on matching periods

Cash flow can be more informative than accounting profit for a subscription-heavy software business, but only when the periods and definitions match. CrowdStrike’s reported Q2 fiscal 2027 operating cash flow was $530.3 million and free cash flow was $377.4 million. Palo Alto Networks reported FY2026 operating cash flow of $4.553 billion, free cash flow of $4.113 billion and adjusted free cash flow of $4.414 billion. Palo Alto Networks reported an adjusted free-cash-flow margin of 38.4% for FY2026.

Cash-flow measure CrowdStrike Q2 FY2027 Palo Alto Networks FY2026 Comparison rule
Operating cash flow $530.3 million $4.553 billion Quarter versus year; not a like-for-like scale comparison.
Free cash flow $377.4 million $4.113 billion Use the same duration and definition before calculating a relative margin.
Adjusted free cash flow Not stated in the supplied comparison figures $4.414 billion Do not treat adjusted FCF as interchangeable with FCF.
Adjusted FCF margin Not stated 38.4% for FY2026 The denominator and adjustment policy must be identified.

Palo Alto Networks notes that companies may calculate free cash flow differently. Capital expenditures, purchases of property and equipment, and other adjustments can change the result. Before ranking the companies, copy each definition from the reconciliation, calculate free-cash-flow margin using the same period’s revenue, and keep adjusted and unadjusted measures in separate columns.

Questions that determine whether growth is durable

Reported growth is an outcome. An investor still needs to test what supports it and what could interrupt it.

Renewal and expansion

Cybersecurity revenue often depends on customers renewing contracts and adding modules, users or capacity. Review renewal rates, dollar-based net retention, expansion commentary and the mix of new versus existing customers when those data are available. ARR growth without evidence about retention can conceal a business that must replace substantial churn each period.

Platform consolidation and competition

Large customers may consolidate vendors, favoring broad platforms, or they may maintain multiple specialized tools. Consolidation can create cross-selling opportunities for a platform provider but can also make competitive displacements larger and more consequential. Palo Alto Networks’ release identifies competition and consolidation among its risks. Treat those items as issues to monitor, not as proof of a particular outcome.

Usage-based revenue and budget sensitivity

Some security products are priced partly by usage. A customer’s data volume, workloads or security events can rise or fall independently of seat counts. Palo Alto Networks identifies usage-based revenue volatility as a risk. When comparing companies, determine how much revenue is contractually committed and how much can vary with customer activity or changing security budgets.

Acquisition integration

Acquisitions can expand a product portfolio and customer reach, but integration can affect retention, operating expenses, product road maps and the comparability of margins. Palo Alto Networks includes acquisitions among its disclosed risks. Check whether adjusted results remove acquisition-related costs and whether those costs recur as the company continues to buy businesses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Artificial-intelligence opportunity and execution risk

Both security vendors discuss AI-related demand, but a market theme is not a guarantee of incremental revenue or margin. Evaluate which AI features are shipping, how they are priced, whether customers are adopting them, and what infrastructure costs they require. Palo Alto Networks’ management target of $20 billion in FY30 NGS ARR is aspirational; it is not a reported result or a promise of future performance.

Build a same-date valuation comparison

The operating releases do not include synchronized share prices, enterprise values, consensus estimates or valuation multiples. Without those inputs, a price-sensitive answer to “which is the better cybersecurity stock?” would be incomplete.

  1. Choose the valuation date. Use the same market close for both companies. If you use July 31, 2026, label it as the quarter-end date; if you use a later date, use prices and share data from that later date for both stocks.
  2. Collect diluted shares. Use the diluted share count appropriate to the selected earnings period. Basic shares, ending shares and weighted-average diluted shares answer different questions.
  3. Calculate equity value. Multiply the share price by the selected diluted share count. Record whether options, restricted stock units or other potential dilution are included.
  4. Reconcile to enterprise value. Add debt and subtract cash and cash equivalents using balance-sheet data from the same reporting date. Keep convertible debt and short-term investments classified consistently.
  5. Select one denominator first. For an earnings comparison, use a consistent next-twelve-month or forward GAAP earnings measure. For a cash-flow comparison, use a consistent free-cash-flow definition and forecast period. Do not mix one company’s adjusted denominator with the other’s GAAP denominator.
  6. Calculate the multiple. Divide equity value by earnings or enterprise value by operating cash flow or free cash flow, depending on the chosen framework. Record the formula beside the result so another reader can reproduce it.
  7. Stress-test the result. Recalculate using slower growth, lower renewal or expansion, higher compensation expense, and different margin assumptions. A valuation that works only under one optimistic case is fragile.

A valuation multiple is an output of assumptions, not a verdict by itself. A company can deserve a higher multiple if its growth, retention, margins and balance sheet support it, while a lower multiple can reflect real execution or durability risks.

A practical investor scorecard

Category What to record for each company Why it matters
Period alignment Fiscal quarter or year, start and end dates, and duration Prevents quarter-to-year and calendar-to-fiscal errors.
Revenue growth Reported revenue, year-over-year change and organic or acquired context when disclosed Shows current demand but not necessarily durability.
Recurring revenue Metric name, definition, included products and growth rate Reveals the contract base while preserving scope differences.
GAAP profitability Operating income or loss, net income and margins Provides the accounting anchor.
Adjusted profitability Non-GAAP income, exclusions and reconciliation Helps analyze operating trends without ignoring recurring costs.
Cash generation Operating cash flow, FCF, adjusted FCF, capex and margin Shows conversion of revenue into cash under a stated definition.
Balance sheet Cash, investments, debt and diluted shares Converts operating performance into equity and enterprise value.
Valuation Same-date price and a common forward denominator Determines what investors are paying for the business.
Risk checks Competition, consolidation, renewals, usage, acquisitions, AI execution and adjustments Tests whether the forecast can survive adverse conditions.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Putting FY2026 beside Q2 FY2027 without labels. Always state whether a figure covers three months or 12 months.
  • Treating ARR and NGS ARR as synonyms. Preserve each company’s metric name and definition.
  • Ranking adjusted operating income as if it were GAAP. Show the reconciliation and the excluded compensation and acquisition costs.
  • Comparing free cash flow without checking definitions. Capital spending and adjustment policies can differ.
  • Calling a management target a forecast. The $20 billion FY30 NGS ARR and 40% FY28 adjusted FCF-margin objectives are targets, not achieved results or guarantees.
  • Inferring stock attractiveness from growth alone. Without price, diluted shares, net cash or debt and a common denominator, the valuation question remains open.
  • Ignoring duration when interpreting cash flow. A single strong quarter can be affected by billing timing; annual data smooths some timing effects but may hide recent changes.

Bottom line

CrowdStrike’s latest quarter and Palo Alto Networks’ latest quarter both show substantial growth, recurring-revenue momentum and cash generation, but their reported metrics are not interchangeable and their profitability figures cover different periods. The disciplined approach is to align the dates, retain GAAP as the anchor, inspect every non-GAAP exclusion, compare cash-flow definitions, and investigate retention, competition, consolidation, acquisitions, usage sensitivity and AI execution.

Only after adding same-date share prices, diluted shares, cash and debt, and a consistent forward earnings or free-cash-flow denominator can an investor make a price-sensitive judgment about which cybersecurity stock fits a particular objective. The operating releases alone do not establish a winner.
