Income protection is designed to replace part of your earnings with regular payments when illness or an accident leaves you unable to work under the policy definition. Critical illness cover pays a tax-free lump sum when you are diagnosed with a listed condition and the diagnosis meets the contract’s definition. One cannot automatically substitute for the other.
The sensible choice depends on your sick pay, savings, household income, debts, dependants, existing insurance and the exact policy wording you can afford. Some people may need one, some the other, and some may hold both; there is no universal winner or standard premium without a personal profile and comparable quotations.

What is the financial risk you are trying to insure?
Start with the bill that would become hardest to pay if your health changed. If the immediate danger is losing your salary while rent, mortgage payments, utilities and food continue, income protection addresses that cash-flow risk. If the larger concern is finding a substantial amount for debt repayment, treatment-related expenses or adapting your home after a serious diagnosis, critical illness cover addresses a different, one-off need.

How income protection works
Regular income after incapacity
Income protection is a long-term policy that can pay a regular benefit when illness or an accident prevents you working. MoneyHelper says typical benefits are about 50% to 65% of income, although the amount and calculation method are set by the individual contract. Payments generally continue until you return to work or reach the end of the policy term, subject to the policy’s conditions and any maximum payment period.
Because the benefit is intended to replace earnings rather than create a windfall, insurers apply limits and may take other income into account. Check whether the quoted percentage is based on gross or eligible earnings, how bonuses and variable pay are treated, and whether the policy reduces its payment when you receive other benefits.
The deferred period
A deferred period is the waiting time between becoming unable to work and the start of payments. MoneyHelper identifies four weeks, 13 weeks, 26 weeks and one year as common examples. A longer wait can reduce the premium, but it also means you must fund that period yourself.
Recommended Free Tools
Match the deferral to reliable resources, not optimism. Employer sick pay, statutory benefits and an emergency fund may cover a short period; a household with little cash reserve may need a shorter deferral even if the premium is higher. Confirm when the clock starts, whether a relapse is treated as a new claim, and whether the insurer requires continuous incapacity throughout the waiting period.
Incapacity definitions
The definition of “unable to work” controls when a claim qualifies. MoneyHelper describes three broad approaches:
- Own occupation: you cannot perform your specific job. This is usually more expensive and more likely to produce a successful claim than narrower definitions.
- Suited occupation: you cannot do your job or similar work suited to your qualifications and experience.
- Any occupation: you cannot do any kind of work.
Insurers can use different wording within each category. A surgeon, construction worker and office administrator may therefore face different assessments even under policies using the same label. Read how partial capacity, reasonable adjustments, retraining and a change of occupation are handled. Do not assume a policy will pay simply because you cannot perform your current duties.
Questions to answer before applying
- What monthly benefit is actually payable, and for how long?
- Which illnesses, injuries and mental-health conditions are included or excluded?
- Is the policy guaranteed, reviewable or otherwise subject to changes in premium or terms?
- What evidence of medical condition and occupational duties is required?
- How does the policy treat part-time work, phased returns and rehabilitation?
These details determine the practical value of the cover more than a headline percentage.

How critical illness cover works
A lump sum for specified diagnoses
Critical illness cover pays a tax-free, one-off amount after diagnosis of a condition listed in the policy, provided the diagnosis meets the contract’s definition. The money can be used for purposes such as treatment costs, mortgage or rent, replacing lost income, or adapting a home. It is not a regular salary replacement.
Covered conditions and definitions vary significantly. A condition name alone does not guarantee payment: the policy may require a specified severity, test result, stage, permanence or survival period. Read the definition for every condition you regard as important, together with exclusions for previous diagnoses, symptoms, lifestyle factors or particular circumstances.
Core conditions and partial benefits
The Association of British Insurers’ 2023 guide says cancer, heart attack and stroke are the three core conditions required for a product described as critical illness cover under its standards. The guide also states that 80% of claims against critical illness cover were for those claims it discusses. That is an ABI 2023 statement, not a current claim rate for every insurer or a probability that any individual will claim.
Some contracts offer partial payments for less severe conditions or additional diagnoses. Check whether a partial payment reduces the remaining main benefit, how many payments are allowed and whether the policy ends after any payment. MoneyHelper says the policy typically ends after a payout, so a claim can remove future protection unless the contract expressly provides otherwise.
Standalone cover or a rider
The FCA Handbook distinguishes a standalone critical illness policy from critical illness cover sold as a rider to term assurance. A combined quote can therefore contain life cover and critical illness cover with separate triggers, sums assured and end dates. Ask for each component to be shown separately, including what happens to the critical illness element if the life policy is cancelled, converted or pays out.
Income protection compared with critical illness cover
| Feature | Income protection | Critical illness cover |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger | Incapacity caused by illness or accident under the policy definition | Diagnosis of a specified condition meeting the policy definition |
| Payment | Regular benefit replacing part of income | One-off lump sum |
| Scope | Broad range of illnesses or injuries that prevent work, subject to wording | Only listed conditions and qualifying definitions |
| Timing | Deferred period before benefits begin; duration depends on the contract | Lump sum after a qualifying claim; MoneyHelper says the policy typically ends after payment |
| Key wording | Own, suited or any occupation; exclusions and benefit limits | Covered conditions, severity definitions, exclusions and partial-payment rules |
| Main financial purpose | Continuity of household income | Debt reduction or one-off costs following a serious diagnosis |
The table describes product structure, not a recommendation. An illness could prevent work without appearing on a critical-illness list, while a qualifying diagnosis might produce a lump sum even when you can continue working. Conversely, an income-protection claim depends on incapacity under the selected occupation test, not merely on receiving a diagnosis.
When income protection is usually the stronger fit
Your household depends on your earnings
Investigate income protection first when one salary pays most regular household costs and a prolonged absence from work would exhaust savings. This is especially relevant for self-employed people, contractors and employees whose employer sick pay is short or limited. Calculate the essential monthly amount rather than trying to insure every pound of current spending.

Your main fear is a long recovery, not a particular diagnosis
Income protection can respond to a wide range of illnesses and injuries that meet its incapacity definition. That breadth matters when the conditions most likely to disrupt your occupation are not among the named illnesses in a critical-illness policy. It still does not cover every absence: exclusions, deferred periods, evidence requirements and benefit limits apply.

Compare the deferred period with employer sick pay and accessible savings. A 13-week deferral may be practical if your employer pays for several months; a one-year deferral requires a much larger reserve. Do not select a long wait solely for a lower premium if you cannot survive it.
When critical illness cover is usually the stronger fit
You need capital after a serious diagnosis
A lump sum can address a mortgage balance, rent during treatment, specialist care, travel, childcare or home adaptations. It can also give a household flexibility when the ill person’s work situation is uncertain. Decide the amount by listing these potential costs and subtracting savings and other resources.
Your income would continue but costs would jump
Someone with strong employer benefits or a partner who can maintain household income may be less exposed to salary loss. A serious diagnosis can nevertheless create substantial one-off expenses. In that situation, critical illness cover may target the remaining gap more directly than a policy designed mainly for monthly income.
You accept a defined list of triggers
Critical illness cover is suitable only if you understand that unlisted conditions, or listed conditions that do not meet the specified severity, will not qualify. Read the full definitions before relying on the policy for a particular family medical concern.
Could you need both?
Holding both can make sense when you face two separate exposures: a prolonged inability to earn and a need for immediate capital after a serious diagnosis. For example, income protection could support regular bills during incapacity, while a critical-illness lump sum could fund home modifications or reduce debt.
Affordability is the constraint. Paying for two policies can leave neither benefit large enough to solve the underlying problem. Prioritise the risk that would cause the greatest damage, then test whether the second policy adds meaningful protection after employer benefits, savings and existing insurance are counted. Neither policy should be described as a complete replacement for the other.

A practical decision process
- Map essential spending. List mortgage or rent, utilities, food, transport, debt repayments, childcare and unavoidable medical costs. Separate essentials from discretionary spending.
- Measure existing support. Record employer sick pay, workplace insurance, statutory benefits, partner income, accessible savings and any policies already in force. Note each benefit’s waiting period and maximum duration.
- Identify the largest gap. If monthly income would disappear, quantify the sustainable replacement amount. If a diagnosis would create a capital shortfall, estimate the one-off sum required.
- Match the trigger. For income protection, compare own-, suited- and any-occupation wording. For critical illness cover, list the conditions and definitions that matter to you and check exclusions.
- Choose a workable waiting period and term. Ensure an income-protection deferral can be funded and that the policy lasts through the years when dependants or debts create the greatest exposure. Check the critical-illness policy’s expiry age and what happens after a partial or full payment.
- Stress-test the premium. Consider affordability if your circumstances change. A policy that lapses during a difficult period provides no protection.
- Compare like with like. Ask for the same benefit amount, term, deferral, occupation definition and medical assumptions across quotations. For critical illness, compare the same covered conditions, severity definitions and partial-benefit rules.
- Read the policy before cancelling anything. Confirm exclusions, claim evidence, notification deadlines, indexation, benefit offsets and cancellation rights. Keep the schedule and definitions with your financial records.
How to calculate a sensible amount
Income-protection illustration
Suppose eligible income is £3,000 a month and a policy allows a 60% benefit. The theoretical benefit would be £1,800 a month before any contractual offsets or limits. That figure is an illustration, not a quotation or a recommendation. Subtract reliable sick pay and other income, then test whether the remainder covers essential spending. Confirm whether the insurer uses gross income, net income or another formula.
Critical-illness illustration
Build a capital target from identifiable costs: debt you would want to clear, likely home adaptations, treatment-related travel and a period of household adjustment. Subtract savings and other resources. Avoid choosing a round number simply because it appears in an advert; the policy sum should relate to the gap you have identified and remain affordable over the term.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
Confusing diagnosis with incapacity
A diagnosis can qualify for critical illness cover only if it meets that policy’s definition. It does not automatically trigger income protection. Income protection requires incapacity under the stated occupation test, even where no named critical illness is involved.
Choosing the cheapest-looking deferral
A long deferred period can lower premiums but creates a funding obligation. Set aside enough accessible cash to cover it and verify how recurrent conditions are treated.
Assuming every cancer, heart attack or stroke qualifies
Those are core conditions under the ABI’s 2023 standards, but the contract still controls the qualifying definition. Stage, severity, diagnostic evidence and exclusions can all matter.
Ignoring the occupation wording
“Own occupation” and “any occupation” can produce very different claim outcomes. Ask the insurer or adviser to explain the test using your actual duties, qualifications and likely alternative work.
Overlooking employer benefits
Employer sick pay and group insurance may reduce the amount of private cover required, but they can change when you leave a job or become unemployed. Record their duration and portability rather than assuming they last indefinitely.

Treating industry statistics as personal odds
The ABI’s reported £7.84 billion in protection-insurer claims, released on 29 June 2026 for 2025 claims across protection products, is broad industry context. It is not a comparison of income protection with critical illness cover and does not predict an individual’s chance of claiming.
What regulators and consumer evidence add
The FCA Handbook classifies income protection as an individual contract providing income during incapacity caused by ill health or accident. It also distinguishes standalone critical illness policies from critical illness cover attached to term assurance. Those classifications help you decode a quote but do not select a suitable product.
The FCA’s pure-protection market study examined distribution of both products and supports seeking suitable guidance when comparing cover. It does not endorse a particular insurer. In an FCA Consumer Panel report titled “Critical illness vs income protection cover in the consumer mindset,” participants found income protection harder to value when they viewed it as paying only a percentage of salary and regarded premiums as high. That is a finding from those participants, not a universal consumer attitude; it highlights the need to explain the benefit and waiting period in household-budget terms.

Questions to ask an adviser or insurer
- Which exact incapacity definition applies, and how would it assess my occupation?
- What income counts for the benefit calculation, and which other payments reduce it?
- What are the deferred period and maximum payment duration?
- Which conditions are covered, and what severity or evidence does each definition require?
- Are partial payments available, and do they reduce or end the remaining cover?
- Is the critical illness element standalone or a rider to life insurance?
- What exclusions, medical underwriting decisions and notification deadlines apply?
- How do premiums and benefits change if my job, income or health changes?
Bottom line
Choose income protection when maintaining monthly earnings through a qualifying incapacity is the central problem. Choose critical illness cover when a defined diagnosis could create a large, immediate capital need. Review employer benefits, savings, debts, dependants and existing insurance before setting the amount, and compare policies only on matching terms. The decisive evidence is in the occupation test, deferred period, benefit limits and condition definitions—not in the product name or a headline price.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a critical illness claim be made if I can still work?
Potentially, yes. Critical illness cover is triggered by a qualifying diagnosis and the policy’s definition, not by an inability to work. Income protection uses an incapacity test instead.
Does income protection pay for every period of sickness?
No. The claim must satisfy the policy’s incapacity definition, deferred period, exclusions and benefit limits. Check how partial work and recurrent conditions are treated.
What happens to critical illness cover after a full payout?
MoneyHelper says the policy typically ends after payment. Confirm the specific contract, including whether any life cover or separate rider continues.
