Credit freeze vs. fraud alert at a glance
A freeze and an alert work at different points in a lender’s decision process. A freeze blocks or restricts access to your report for prospective creditors. An alert leaves the report available but asks businesses to contact you or otherwise verify that the applicant is really you.
| Protection | New-account barrier | Duration | Cost | Setup | Applying for new credit | Existing accounts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Credit freeze | Restricts prospective creditors’ access to your credit report | Until you lift it | Free | Place separately with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion | You may need to lift it temporarily where the lender checks | Does not stop fraudulent charges or takeovers on accounts already open |
| Initial fraud alert | Requires lenders to verify your identity before opening an account | One year; renewable | Free | Contact one nationwide bureau; it must notify the other two | Report remains accessible, although verification can delay approval | Does not stop fraudulent charges or takeovers on accounts already open |
| Extended fraud alert | Requires identity verification | Seven years for qualifying identity-theft victims | Free | Available with an FTC Identity Theft Report or police report | Report remains accessible with the longer alert attached | Does not stop fraudulent charges or takeovers on accounts already open |
| Active-duty alert | Requires identity verification | One year; renewable for the deployment period | Free | For active-duty service members | Prescreened credit offers are suppressed for two years unless you opt back in | Does not stop fraudulent charges or takeovers on accounts already open |
Why a credit freeze is usually the stronger protection
The Federal Trade Commission describes a credit freeze as “the best way you can protect against an identity thief opening new accounts in your name.” The reason is structural: a lender commonly wants to review a credit report before approving a card, loan or other account. If the report is frozen, the prospective creditor cannot obtain the normal report until you authorize access by lifting the freeze.

A fraud alert depends on a second control working as intended. The lender can still access the report, but the alert instructs the business to check with you before opening the account. A careful lender will call or use another verification method; the process can be effective, but it is not the same as denying report access at the outset.
A freeze is therefore the better default for someone who is not about to seek new credit and wants a standing barrier. It is also free, available to anyone for any reason and does not change a credit score. The main cost is administrative: you must plan a temporary lift when a legitimate lender needs to review your report.
How a credit freeze works
It is a bureau-by-bureau control
Place the freeze separately with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. A freeze at one bureau does not automatically freeze the other two. Keep the account credentials or personal identification information each bureau gives you so that you can manage a future lift.
It stays until you remove it
Unlike an initial fraud alert, a freeze has no one-year expiration. It remains active until you lift it temporarily or remove it. You can request a lift for a defined period or for a particular creditor, depending on the bureau’s available controls and the lender’s instructions.
It does not alter your credit profile
The FTC says a freeze does not affect your credit score. It also does not prevent you from using an existing credit card, applying for a job, renting an apartment or obtaining insurance. Those activities can involve different screening processes, and a freeze is aimed at prospective creditors seeking your report to open new credit.

Placement and lifting time limits
FTC guidance published in 2024 states that a freeze placed online or by phone must be put in place within one business day. When you request an online or phone lift, the stated maximum is one hour. Mail requests can take longer, so online or phone management is generally the practical choice when a loan closing or card application is time-sensitive.
How a fraud alert works
One contact starts the alert across the nationwide bureaus
For an initial alert, contact any one of the three nationwide credit bureaus. That bureau must notify the other two, so you do not have to submit three separate initial-alert requests. Confirm that the alert appears on all three reports before assuming the process is complete.

The initial alert lasts one year
The FTC’s 2025 consumer guidance says an initial fraud alert lasts one year and can be renewed. It does not block report access. Instead, it tells businesses to take reasonable steps to verify your identity before opening a new account.
When an alert can be more convenient
If you expect to apply for a mortgage, car loan or new card soon, an alert avoids the repeated freeze-lift cycle. The lender can review your report without waiting for you to unlock it. Identity verification may still add a call, code or other step, and approval can take longer if the business cannot reach you promptly.
Extended and active-duty versions
An extended fraud alert lasts seven years, but it is reserved for people who experienced identity theft and have an FTC Identity Theft Report or a police report. An active-duty alert lasts one year and can be renewed for the period of deployment. The active-duty version also suppresses prescreened credit offers for two years unless the service member opts back in.

Choosing the right protection for your situation
You are not seeing signs of theft and do not need credit soon
Freeze your reports with all three bureaus. This gives you the strongest standing barrier while creating little day-to-day disruption. Store your management details securely and review your reports and account statements periodically.

An initial fraud alert may be less disruptive because the report remains available. Tell the lender that an alert is present and keep your phone, email and other verification channels current. If you already have freezes, ask the lender which bureau or bureaus it will use. Lift the freeze only at the bureau the lender checks, for the shortest practical window, then restore it after the lender confirms the review is finished.
You suspect or confirm identity theft
Use a layered response:
- Place freezes with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.
- Add an initial fraud alert; an alert can be added while a freeze is active.
- Report the identity theft through IdentityTheft.gov and follow the recovery plan it generates.
- Contact affected banks, card issuers and other account providers using the number on an official statement or card, not a message supplied by a suspected fraudster.
- Ask whether you qualify for a seven-year extended alert and gather the required FTC Identity Theft Report or police report.
The freeze blocks many attempts to open new credit, while the alert adds a verification instruction for businesses that can still access the report or for situations where you temporarily lift the freeze.
You are an active-duty service member
Consider an active-duty alert when you are deployed. It is renewable for the deployment period and suppresses prescreened credit offers for two years unless you opt back in. A freeze remains available if you want the stronger access barrier; the two protections serve different purposes.
Step-by-step: placing and managing a credit freeze
- Prepare your information. Have the identifying details requested by each bureau available. Use a unique password for each bureau account and save the confirmation or PIN in a password manager.
- Open the freeze controls for Equifax. Submit the online or phone request and retain the confirmation showing that the freeze is active.
- Repeat for Experian. A request at Equifax does not activate protection here.
- Repeat for TransUnion. Check that the confirmation identifies a freeze rather than a separate monitoring or alert product.
- Before applying for credit, ask the lender what it will check. A lender may use one bureau or more than one. Do not assume that lifting at one bureau opens all three.
- Request a temporary lift or removal. Choose the narrowest period and bureaus that meet the lender’s request. FTC guidance says an online or phone lift must occur within one hour.
- Restore the freeze. After the lender confirms it has completed the credit review, verify that the freeze is active again at each bureau you lifted.
A freeze is not a substitute for reviewing statements. Someone who already has your card number, online-banking credentials or account-recovery access may be able to misuse an existing account without requesting a new credit report.

Step-by-step: placing and using a fraud alert
- Contact one nationwide bureau. Request an initial fraud alert and provide the contact method you want businesses to use for verification.
- Save the confirmation and expiration date. The initial alert lasts one year under FTC guidance from 2025.
- Verify propagation. The bureau you contacted must notify the other two, but check your reports or account dashboards to make sure the alert is displayed everywhere.
- Keep your contact details reachable. A lender may pause an application while trying to verify your identity. Answer calls from the lender through a number you independently confirm.
- Renew when necessary. An initial alert can be renewed for another year. If identity theft occurred, ask about the seven-year extended alert and submit the required report.
An alert does not guarantee that every fraudulent application will be rejected. It is an instruction to verify identity, so continue monitoring accounts and report suspicious activity quickly.
Using a freeze and a fraud alert together
You do not have to choose one exclusively. The FTC says an alert can be added even when a freeze is active. The combination is useful after confirmed identity theft or when you want a freeze as the primary barrier plus an explicit verification warning for any creditor that obtains access after a temporary lift.
Using both creates more administration. You still need to manage three separate freezes, and an alert may generate verification calls during a legitimate application. Set calendar reminders for any planned freeze lift and for the alert’s renewal or expiration date.
What neither option protects
Both controls focus on opening new accounts. Neither stops a thief from using an existing checking account, credit card, insurance account or online account. Continue to:

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Freezing only one bureau
Because the three nationwide bureaus operate separately, a one-bureau freeze leaves the other reports available. Complete all three placements unless you have a specific, documented reason not to.
Assuming an alert blocks access
An alert is a verification instruction, not a lock. If you want report access restricted, place freezes as well.
Forgetting the lift after a loan application
A temporary lift can be limited to the bureau and period the lender needs. Restore the freeze when the application or underwriting review is finished.

Neither a freeze nor an alert identifies every fraudulent transaction. Statement review and prompt contact with the institution remain necessary.
Missing expiration dates
Initial alerts expire after one year unless renewed. Active-duty alerts also run for one year at a time, while extended alerts last seven years for qualifying victims. A freeze has no scheduled expiration, but a temporary lift ends according to the window you select.
Decision checklist
- Need the strongest ongoing barrier? Freeze all three reports.
- Applying for credit soon and want fewer unlock steps? Use an initial fraud alert, or temporarily lift an existing freeze only where the lender checks.
- Identity theft confirmed? Use freezes plus an initial alert, report the theft through IdentityTheft.gov and ask about the seven-year extended alert.
- On active duty? Consider the renewable active-duty alert and its two-year prescreened-offer suppression.
- Worried about your score? A freeze does not affect your credit score.
- Concerned about an existing account? Contact the bank, card issuer or insurer directly; neither protection stops existing-account misuse.
Bottom line
Choose a credit freeze when prevention is the priority: it is free, does not affect your score and remains until you lift it, making it the stronger defense against new-account identity theft. Choose an initial fraud alert when convenience during an upcoming credit application matters more and you can respond to lender verification. After identity theft, use both where appropriate and add the extended alert if you meet its documentation requirements.
