Credit Card Settings to Turn On for Safer Rewards Spending

Before using a rewards card, turn on transaction alerts, payment-due and balance alerts, a temporary card lock, and—when available—a virtual card number for online merchants. Keep your contact details current, review recurring payments and statements, and know how to report a suspicious charge. These controls reduce the time between an unauthorized transaction and your response, but none replaces statement review or careful rewards-term monitoring.

Why rewards cards need a deliberate safety setup

Rewards cards are now the normal way many people pay. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) reported in its 2024 Federal Register publication of Circular 2024-07 that more than 90 percent of general-purpose credit-card spending occurred on rewards cards in 2019, and that 75 percent of general-purpose credit cards were rewards cards by the end of 2022.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That concentration creates two separate risks. Fraud can interrupt access to a card and expose an account to unauthorized spending. Rewards can also be lost when an issuer or rewards partner changes, blocks, revokes or deducts benefits under conditions that were buried or described vaguely. The CFPB says those practices may violate consumer-protection law when they conflict with the promised benefit.

Account settings address the first risk directly and help you document the second. Alerts create an early warning, locks limit some new authorizations, virtual numbers hide the physical card number online, and recurring-payment tools show where your card is stored. You still need to read statements, verify payments and understand the rewards terms attached to each purchase.

Turn on purchase alerts first

Choose the smallest useful threshold

Set an alert for every transaction if your issuer allows it. If the card produces too many notifications, use the lowest threshold that still helps you recognize unusual activity. Capital One, for example, documents instant purchase notifications with a user-defined minimum. Chase documents purchase alerts alongside payment-due, balance and spending-limit alerts. Feature names and thresholds differ by issuer and card product.

Use the alert channel you will actually see: push notification, text message, email or a combination. A notification is useful only when it reaches you promptly and identifies enough information—such as the amount and merchant—to trigger recognition. Do not treat an alert as proof that a transaction is legitimate; a familiar-looking merchant descriptor can still represent a fraudulent charge.

How to enable it

  1. Open your issuer’s mobile app or website and select the specific card.
  2. Open the area labeled Alerts, Notifications or Security; labels vary by issuer.
  3. Enable purchase or transaction alerts and choose the delivery channels.
  4. Select every-transaction alerts or set the lowest available dollar threshold.
  5. Make a small, legitimate purchase and confirm that the notification arrives on the channel you selected.

Purchase alerts do not replace a monthly statement review. Compare posted transactions with receipts and subscriptions because alerts can be missed, delayed or overlooked.

Add payment-due, balance and limit alerts

Payment-due alerts prevent avoidable damage

Turn on a due-date alert even when autopay is active. Schedule it early enough to investigate a failed bank connection or an unexpected withdrawal before the payment deadline. A due-date reminder is a backstop, not a substitute for confirming that the payment actually posted.

Balance and spending-limit alerts protect utilization and cash flow

Set a balance alert at a self-imposed ceiling below the card’s credit limit. This can warn you when a large purchase, a temporary authorization or accumulated rewards spending is approaching a level you did not intend. A spending-limit alert can identify an account that is nearing its formal limit, while a lower personal threshold gives you more time to act.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) cautions that automatic debits can be wrong or overdraw a bank account. Check the amount and date of each autopay withdrawal, keep a due-date reminder, and maintain enough cash in the funding account. If an autopay amount looks wrong, contact the issuer and your bank promptly rather than assuming the system will correct itself.

Use a temporary lock when a card is misplaced

What a lock is good for

A temporary lock is appropriate when you cannot find the physical card but are not yet sure it is permanently stolen. Chase provides lock and unlock controls in its app. Locking can stop some new card-present or card-not-present authorizations while you search, without immediately replacing the card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What a lock does not necessarily stop

Locks are not universal. Chase states: “You can still make purchases with your card in your digital wallet and it won’t stop recurring charges.” Visa likewise explains that card-off controls may not stop tokenized transactions, recurring transactions, returns or credits. A card lock therefore is not a complete shutdown of every payment path.

  • Check whether the setting covers the physical card, digital-wallet tokens and online transactions separately.
  • Assume stored subscriptions may continue unless the issuer explicitly says otherwise.
  • Watch for refunds and credits, which may still post after a lock.
  • If the card is stolen or the number is exposed, report it and request cancellation and replacement instead of relying on a temporary lock.

How to use the lock safely

  1. Open the issuer app, select the affected card and choose Lock, Freeze or a similarly named control.
  2. Confirm the status changed and note which transaction types the issuer says remain possible.
  3. Search for the card immediately; check your wallet, vehicle, workplace and recent merchants.
  4. Unlock it only after you have the card and have checked recent activity.
  5. Escalate to a permanent replacement if the card is missing, stolen or used without authorization.

Protect online purchases with virtual card numbers

Why a virtual number helps

Some issuers offer virtual card numbers that keep the physical card number private when you shop online. Capital One says its virtual cards can be locked independently of the physical card. A merchant-specific number can limit the usefulness of a leaked number to that merchant, depending on the issuer’s implementation.

Availability and subscription limits

Virtual-card availability varies by issuer, network, card product and geography. Check whether the number is single-use, merchant-specific or reusable, and whether it works for digital wallets, recurring billing and refunds.

Locking a virtual number does not cancel a subscription. Cancel the service with the merchant, obtain confirmation, and then use the issuer’s recurring-payment controls or dispute process if charges continue. Replacing the physical card also may not stop a merchant that receives an updated network token or account-on-file credential.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to set one up

  1. In the issuer’s app or website, open the card’s online-security or virtual-card feature.
  2. Create a virtual number for the merchant, if merchant-specific numbers are offered.
  3. Use the virtual number, expiration date and security code at checkout instead of the physical details.
  4. Record the merchant and purpose so you can recognize later charges.
  5. Lock or delete the virtual number when the relationship ends, and separately cancel the subscription with the merchant.

Make recurring payments and statements visible

Inventory every stored-card relationship

The CFPB identifies recurring-payment management as an emerging account feature. If your issuer offers it, use the list to find subscriptions, utilities, memberships, free trials and merchants that retain your card details. Record the merchant name, billing frequency, expected amount and cancellation method.

Do not assume the merchant descriptor on a statement will match the brand name you remember. Keep receipts, confirmation emails and cancellation numbers so you can connect a posted charge to the original authorization.

Review statements on a schedule

  • Read each statement from the first transaction through the final balance, not only the rewards summary.
  • Match unfamiliar amounts against receipts, digital-wallet records and household-authorized purchases.
  • Check for small test charges, duplicate charges, changed subscription prices and credits that never arrived.
  • Compare the rewards ledger with eligible purchases, exclusions, caps and expiration rules.
  • Save statements and supporting records until the issuer’s dispute or rewards-adjustment process is complete.

Prompt review matters because the CFPB advises contacting the issuer immediately when you spot a suspicious charge. A lock is a temporary control; a statement review is how you find transactions that bypassed it or posted later.

Keep profile and travel information current

Update your phone number, email address and mailing address in the issuer’s profile. Chase recommends current phone details so it can reach cardholders quickly. An outdated number can delay a fraud verification call or leave you unaware that a replacement card was shipped.

Use a travel-notice feature where your issuer provides one. The CFPB lists travel notices and profile management among online-portal functions. A travel notice does not guarantee approval of every foreign transaction, but it gives the issuer context for legitimate location changes and tells you what contact method will work while you are away.

  • Check that your mobile number can receive texts while traveling.
  • Confirm whether international transaction alerts use data, SMS or email.
  • Carry a backup payment method without storing every card in the same wallet.
  • Review foreign-exchange and cash-advance terms before departure.

Prepare a response plan before a suspicious charge

Decide in advance what you will do when an alert or statement shows a transaction you do not recognize. The CFPB’s guidance is direct: “If you spot a fraudulent transaction, call the card provider’s toll-free customer service number immediately.” Use the number on the back of the card or on an official statement, not a number supplied in an unsolicited message.

  1. Verify the transaction. Check whether an authorized household member, digital wallet or merchant descriptor explains it.
  2. Secure access. Lock the card or virtual number if that is appropriate, and change online-account credentials if you suspect account compromise.
  3. Call the issuer immediately. Report the charge, ask whether other transactions or tokens are affected, and follow the dispute instructions.
  4. Cancel and replace a compromised card. Ask what happens to recurring payments, digital-wallet tokens, refunds and pending credits.
  5. Monitor afterward. Review later statements and alerts for additional fraudulent activity, including small authorization attempts.
  6. Document everything. Keep the case number, call date, representative’s instructions, receipts and any police or merchant report that the issuer requests.

Compare issuers by control quality, not reward rate alone

When choosing between cards, evaluate the safety controls alongside annual fees, earning rates and redemption terms. The following questions expose meaningful differences:

Comparison area Questions to ask Why it matters
Alert granularity Can you receive every-transaction alerts? Are thresholds user-defined? Which channels are supported? More precise alerts reduce the time before you recognize an unfamiliar charge.
Lock coverage Does a lock cover physical transactions, online purchases, digital-wallet tokens and recurring charges? A card-off switch may leave important payment paths open.
Virtual cards Are virtual numbers available for this card? Can each merchant number be locked independently? Separate numbers can limit exposure when an online merchant is breached.
Recurring-payment visibility Does the portal identify stored-card merchants and provide cancellation guidance? Visibility helps you remove unwanted subscriptions and investigate continuing charges.
Dispute and replacement workflow Can you report fraud in the app and speak to a representative immediately? How are wallets and recurring payments handled after replacement? A fast, clear process reduces disruption after compromise.
Rewards terms Are exclusions, caps, expiration, clawbacks and redemption changes clearly disclosed? A high earning rate is less valuable when conditions are hidden or benefits can be revoked unexpectedly.

No cited source establishes a universal percentage reduction in fraud losses from any one setting. Treat these tools as layers that improve detection and control, not as a guarantee against loss.

A practical maintenance routine for rewards spending

At setup

  • Enable purchase, payment-due, balance and spending-limit alerts.
  • Test at least one notification channel.
  • Enable a lock and locate the permanent-replacement option before you need it.
  • Create virtual numbers for online merchants when available.
  • Confirm profile, phone and travel-notice information.
  • Read the card’s rewards exclusions, caps, redemption rules and expiration terms.

Each week

  • Scan alerts and pending transactions for unfamiliar merchants or amounts.
  • Check that a recent payment was scheduled or posted as expected.
  • Review new subscriptions, trials and merchant authorizations.

Each statement cycle

  • Reconcile every posted charge with a receipt or authorized user.
  • Check recurring charges, refunds, credits and rewards earnings.
  • Investigate discrepancies immediately and retain documentation.
  • Confirm the balance and payment withdrawal against your bank account.

After travel, a device change or a card replacement

  • Verify that alerts still reach your current device and phone number.
  • Re-add only the digital-wallet tokens you recognize.
  • Review merchants that may have received updated payment credentials.
  • Recheck subscriptions and statement activity for at least the next few cycles.

Common problems and the right fix

Too many alerts

Keep transaction alerts but raise the threshold only enough to make the stream usable. Do not disable them entirely; use balance and due-date alerts as additional safeguards.

A locked card still generated a charge

Check whether the transaction came from a digital-wallet token, recurring authorization, return or credit. Contact the issuer if you do not recognize it, because those exceptions do not make an unauthorized charge legitimate.

A replacement card did not stop a subscription

Cancel directly with the merchant, ask for written confirmation, and use the issuer’s recurring-payment or dispute process if billing continues. A new physical number is not proof that every account-on-file credential was removed.

Autopay withdrew an unexpected amount

Compare the debit with the statement and authorization, contact the issuer and bank, and preserve the records. The FTC warns that automatic debits can be incorrect or overdraw an account, so do not wait for the next cycle.

Rewards disappeared after a transaction

Review the applicable terms, earning category, cap, exclusion and redemption history. Ask the issuer for the specific reason and keep the original offer or disclosure. The CFPB has warned that devaluing, revoking or blocking earned rewards through unclear conditions can raise consumer-protection concerns.

The safest default configuration

For most rewards-card users, the strongest practical configuration is: every-transaction purchase alerts; an early payment-due reminder; a balance threshold below the credit limit; a tested temporary lock; virtual or merchant-specific numbers for online purchases when offered; a recurring-payment inventory; current contact details; and a written fraud-response plan. Review the statement and rewards ledger every cycle because alerts, locks and virtual numbers each have exceptions.
