Credit Card Fraud Alert vs. Credit Freeze: Which Should You Use?

By TheFinanceBase Team 11 min read

Use a credit freeze when your priority is stopping a thief from opening new accounts in your name. A freeze blocks creditors from accessing your credit report until you lift it. Use an initial fraud alert when you suspect identity theft and want lenders to verify your identity while leaving your report accessible. Both protections are free, and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidance says you can use them together.

The phrase “credit card fraud alert” can be misleading. A bureau fraud alert or credit freeze addresses new-account identity theft; neither is the procedure for disputing an unauthorized purchase on a card you already have. For an unfamiliar existing-card transaction, contact the card issuer and follow its fraud-reporting and dispute process.

The practical difference in one sentence

A credit freeze restricts access to your report, while a fraud alert requests extra identity verification before a business grants new credit. The freeze is the stronger barrier, but it requires you to lift or remove it when a legitimate lender needs your report. An alert is easier to place and maintain, but it does not block access and therefore does not provide the same level of control.

Question Credit freeze Initial fraud alert
What happens to your report? Creditors generally cannot access it while the freeze is active. The report remains accessible; businesses are asked to verify your identity before opening new credit.
Who can use it? Anyone, for any reason. People who are or suspect they may be affected by identity theft.
Cost Free to place and to lift. Free.
How long does it last? Until you lift or remove it. One year; renewable.
Where do you set it up? Separately with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. With any one of the three nationwide bureaus; that bureau must notify the other two.
What happens when you apply for credit? You temporarily lift the freeze so the lender can access the report. The lender can access the report but is asked to take additional steps to confirm it is really you.

The FTC describes a freeze as the best way to protect against an identity thief opening new accounts in your name. That is a decision about access control, not a promise that every type of fraud will stop.

First, identify the problem you are trying to solve

New account opened, or an application you did not make

If someone uses your personal information to apply for a new credit card, loan, line of credit, or other account, the relevant tools are a freeze and a bureau fraud alert. They operate on your credit reports, where lenders commonly look before approving new credit.

Unauthorized purchase on a card you already use

A freeze does not shut off an existing card, and a bureau alert does not investigate individual transactions. If you see a purchase you did not authorize, contact the card issuer promptly through its fraud-reporting channel. Issuers have their own instructions and deadlines, which are separate from the FTC’s freeze and alert process.

Other forms of identity misuse

Neither protection covers every misuse of personal information. A freeze and an alert are focused on access to credit reports and the opening of new credit accounts. They do not replace reviewing account statements, securing bank or utility accounts, reporting a stolen identity, or following an institution’s account-recovery process.

How a credit freeze works

A freeze, also called a security freeze, places a restriction on access to your credit report. When a lender cannot obtain the report, a thief is less likely to complete a new-account application using your information. The restriction stays in place until you ask the bureau to lift it temporarily or remove it.

You can still use existing credit cards while a freeze is active. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says security freezes do not affect credit scores. A freeze can, however, interrupt a new application if the lender cannot retrieve the report until you provide a lift.

What a freeze does not mean

  • It does not cancel your existing cards or close your accounts.
  • It does not change your credit score.
  • It does not automatically freeze reports at every bureau when you contact only one.
  • It does not guarantee that a thief cannot commit another kind of fraud that does not depend on a credit-report check.

What happens when you need new credit

Before applying, ask the lender which bureau or bureaus it expects to use. The FTC suggests lifting the freeze at the bureau the lender will check when that is possible. You can request a temporary lift for a period you choose or remove the freeze; after the application, restore the freeze if you want the restriction back. Because lenders differ in which reports they access, lifting only one bureau may not be enough for an application that checks more than one.

How an initial fraud alert works

An initial fraud alert places a notice on your credit files telling businesses to verify your identity before extending new credit. The report is not blocked. A lender can still pull it, but the alert is a warning to use additional verification rather than relying only on the application details.

The alert lasts one year and can be renewed. You place it with one of Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion; the bureau you contact must notify the other two. That one-contact setup is less work than placing three separate freezes.

When an alert is a sensible choice

  • You suspect your information has been exposed or misused and want a verification step without managing report access for every application.
  • You are about to seek credit and do not want to coordinate a temporary freeze lift.
  • You can respond to verification requests and monitor your reports and accounts closely.

An alert is not a lock. A business may follow the verification instruction, but the report remains available and the alert does not physically prevent an account from being opened.

Extended and active-duty alerts

Extended fraud alert after confirmed identity theft

An extended fraud alert lasts seven years. It is intended for a person who has experienced identity theft and requires an FTC Identity Theft Report or a police report. You place it with one nationwide bureau, which must notify the other two. The documentation requirement distinguishes it from the one-year initial alert.

Active-duty alert for servicemembers

The FTC describes an active-duty alert for eligible active-duty servicemembers. It lasts one year and can be renewed for the period of deployment. As with other alerts, it asks businesses to verify identity rather than blocking report access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the alert category that matches your circumstances. Do not claim an extended alert without the required identity-theft documentation, and do not assume an active-duty alert has the same duration or eligibility rules as an initial alert.

Which option should you choose?

Choose a freeze when prevention is your main goal

Choose a freeze if you want the strongest available restriction against a thief opening new credit and you are willing to lift the restriction for legitimate applications. This is the clearest choice when you are not applying for credit soon, have reason to believe your information is at risk, or prefer to approve report access one application at a time.

Choose an initial alert when you want verification without a lock

Choose an initial alert if you suspect identity theft but need your report to remain available, or if coordinating three freezes would create unnecessary friction. It is free, lasts one year, and one bureau handles notification to the other two.

Use both when you want layered controls

FTC guidance says you can place a fraud alert even when a freeze is already active. The freeze restricts report access; the alert adds an instruction to verify identity if a legitimate business does gain access. Using both means more protection, but you still need to keep track of your freeze credentials and lift process.

Use an extended alert after documented identity theft

If identity theft is confirmed and you can provide an FTC Identity Theft Report or police report, an extended alert gives you a seven-year verification notice. It is not simply a longer initial alert that anyone can request.

Use an active-duty alert if you qualify

An active-duty servicemember can use the separate one-year alert and renew it for the deployment period. Its eligibility and renewal context differ from the general initial alert.

How to place a credit freeze

A freeze must be placed separately with all three nationwide credit bureaus. Completing the request with one bureau does not automatically freeze the other two.

  1. Contact Equifax. Use its current official credit-freeze channel and complete the identity-verification steps it requests.
  2. Contact Experian. Submit a separate freeze request through that bureau’s official channel.
  3. Contact TransUnion. Complete the third, independent request.
  4. Save each bureau’s confirmation and access details. Keep them in a secure place where you can retrieve them when a lender needs a report.
  5. Check the status before applying for credit. A freeze at one bureau does not tell you whether the other two are frozen.

The bureaus’ screens and authentication requirements can change. Use each bureau’s current instructions rather than an old bookmark, email, or third-party form.

How to place an initial fraud alert

  1. Select one nationwide bureau. You do not need to submit three separate initial-alert requests.
  2. Submit the alert request and complete identity verification. Keep the confirmation and the date it was placed.
  3. Allow that bureau to notify the other two. The notification duty is part of the one-bureau process.
  4. Record the renewal date. An initial alert lasts one year, so decide whether you still need it before it expires.

If you are requesting an extended alert, have the required FTC Identity Theft Report or police report available. An active-duty alert follows its own eligibility and deployment-period rules.

Applying for credit while a freeze or alert is active

With a freeze

  1. Ask the lender which bureau or bureaus it will use.
  2. Request a temporary lift at the relevant bureau or bureaus, or remove the freeze if that is the option you prefer.
  3. Submit the application after the lender confirms it can access the report.
  4. Restore the freeze after the application if you want report access restricted again.

If an application is unexpectedly delayed, first confirm which bureau the lender tried to access and whether that bureau’s freeze was lifted. A lift at a different bureau will not necessarily solve the problem.

With a fraud alert

The report remains accessible, but the lender may contact you or use another verification step. Respond promptly through a channel you know belongs to the lender. An alert is designed to create friction for an impostor, so a legitimate application may take additional confirmation.

If identity theft has already occurred

When you find evidence that someone used your identity, report it at IdentityTheft.gov and follow the recovery steps provided there. FTC guidance also advises considering a freeze or an extended fraud alert and reviewing your credit reports for accounts or inquiries you do not recognize.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use a freeze if you want to restrict further access while you investigate.
  • Use an extended alert if you have the required identity-theft documentation and want a seven-year verification notice.
  • Review all three credit reports, because an account or inquiry may appear with one bureau and not another.
  • Contact the institution connected to each fraudulent account and follow its account-specific recovery instructions.
  • Keep copies of reports, confirmations, correspondence, and report numbers so you can show what you have already done.

A freeze or alert is a forward-looking credit-report control. It does not erase a fraudulent account, reverse an unauthorized card purchase, or complete an issuer’s dispute process by itself.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Freezing only one bureau

This is the most important setup error. A freeze must be placed independently with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Make a checklist and save all three confirmations.

Assuming an alert blocks the report

An alert asks for identity verification; it does not restrict access. If your goal is to make a new account difficult to open without your action, use a freeze.

Forgetting a freeze before applying

A lender may be unable to retrieve your report and may pause or decline to process an application. Ask which bureau will be checked and arrange a temporary lift before submitting the application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Thinking a freeze stops existing-card fraud

Your current card continues to work. Report an unauthorized transaction directly to the card issuer; do not wait for a bureau alert or freeze to address it.

Letting a one-year alert expire unnoticed

Record the expiration date when you place an initial or active-duty alert. Renew it if the risk continues, or consider a different protection if your circumstances have changed.

Expecting a score change

A freeze does not raise or lower your credit score. Its effect is on report access, not the scoring calculation.

Using an unverified website or phone number

Start from the bureau’s official site or a trusted statement and check that you are dealing with the correct bureau before entering personal information. The bureaus’ procedures can change, so avoid relying on forwarded links.

Decision examples

You are not applying for credit and received a data-exposure notice

A freeze at all three bureaus is usually the strongest response if preventing a new account is your priority. Add an initial alert if you also want businesses to receive an explicit identity-verification instruction.

You suspect misuse but need to apply for a mortgage soon

An initial alert may be more convenient because the lender can access your report while being asked to verify your identity. If you prefer a freeze, ask the mortgage lender which bureaus it will use and plan the temporary lifts in advance.

You found a new account you did not open

Treat this as suspected or confirmed identity theft: report it, review all three reports, contact the affected creditor, and consider a freeze plus the appropriate alert. An extended alert requires the specified identity-theft documentation.

Your existing card shows a purchase from a merchant you do not recognize

Contact the card issuer through its fraud channel. A bureau freeze or alert is not a substitute for disputing that transaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

For most people seeking the strongest protection against new-account identity theft, use a free freeze at all three nationwide credit bureaus and lift it only when a legitimate application requires access. If you suspect identity theft and want a lighter-touch warning, place a free initial fraud alert with one bureau; it will notify the other two and remain for one year. After documented identity theft, consider the seven-year extended alert, and eligible servicemembers can use the one-year active-duty alert. Whichever tool you choose, handle unauthorized purchases directly with the card issuer and continue monitoring your reports and accounts.
