Contact the issuer through an authenticated channel and obtain written confirmation of the card status, EMI request status, amount currently due, due date, and authorized payment method. Pay at least the undisputed amount by the due date unless the issuer gives you different written instructions.
Cancellation does not by itself settle the transaction. The issuer’s account record and applicable card terms determine whether the request can still be processed and how the balance must be repaid.

First identify what “cancelled” means
People often use “cancelled” for three different events. The distinction matters because a blocked card, a cancelled card facility and a closed credit-card account have different consequences.

Blocked or deactivated card
Blocking or deactivation normally stops the card from being used for new transactions while the credit and account relationship continues. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) describes deactivation or blocking as temporarily curtailing transactions while maintaining the credit or account relationship with the issuer. Read the RBI’s explanation in its credit-card FAQ.

A pending conversion is therefore still an account-level matter even if the physical or virtual card can no longer be used. Ask whether the issuer has merely blocked the card or has also started account closure.
Credit-card account closure
Closure terminates the account-based relationship. It is subject to clearing outstanding dues. When an issuer receives a closure request and dues remain, it must provide the outstanding amount without waiting for the next billing cycle and advise the customer to pay so closure can be completed.
Use the issuer’s exact wording in your correspondence: “card blocked,” “card deactivated,” “card facility cancelled,” or “credit-card account closed.” A message that only says “card cancelled” is not enough to establish which event occurred.

What to do immediately
- Use an authenticated channel. Contact the issuer from its mobile app, internet banking, official helpline or secure message facility. If you visit a branch, submit a written request and obtain an acknowledgement. Avoid relying on an unverified social-media reply.
- Ask the issuer to identify the account status. Request confirmation of whether the card is blocked or deactivated, the card facility is cancelled, or the credit-card account is closed. Ask for the date and reference number of the action.
- Obtain the EMI request status. Ask whether the conversion request was received, approved, declined or is still pending. Request the request or service number, the date it was logged and, if approved, the effective date.
- Request a complete calculation. Ask for the transaction principal, interest, any upfront discount, instalment amount, number of instalments and every applicable fee or charge. Request the calculation in writing rather than accepting only a verbal figure.
- Confirm the amount currently payable. Ask for the total balance due, the minimum or other amount required by the issuer, the due date and the authorised way to pay while the request is pending. Ask whether a payment will be allocated to the disputed transaction, other dues or the account generally.
- Ask whether any action is needed to complete conversion or closure. The issuer may require a confirmation, a payment, or a new instruction. Do not guess at a required step; have it stated in the reply.
- Save the evidence. Keep the EMI request acknowledgement, transaction receipt, statements, cancellation or blocking notice, emails, chat transcripts and a dated timeline. Screenshots should show the date, sender and reference number where possible.
A concise written request can say:
Please confirm in writing: (1) my card and credit-card account status; (2) the status and reference number of my transaction-to-EMI request; (3) principal, interest, discount, fees, instalment amount and tenure if approved; (4) the balance, due date and authorised payment method while the request is pending; and (5) any action required from me for conversion or account closure.
Do not treat “pending” as approval
The RBI requires transparent disclosure before a transaction is converted to EMIs. The issuer must clearly indicate the principal, interest and any upfront discount supplied by the merchant or issuer to make an offer “no cost” before conversion. Those EMI details must also be shown separately on the card statement. The requirement appears in paragraph 6(b)(iii) of the RBI Master Direction:
“Card-issuers shall ensure complete transparency in the conversion of credit card transactions to Equated Monthly Instalments (EMIs) by clearly indicating the principal, interest and upfront discount provided by the merchant/card-issuer (to make it no cost), prior to the conversion.”
These disclosure rules do not create a universal processing deadline for every EMI request. They also do not say that a pending request is automatically approved. The seven-working-day period in the RBI rules concerns eligible account closure, not EMI-processing time. Only the issuer can confirm whether your request has taken effect.

If the request is approved
Ask for the approval date, the first instalment date, the full instalment schedule, the interest rate or total interest, the treatment of any upfront discount and all fees. Check the next statement to ensure the principal and EMI are shown separately as promised. If the account is being closed, ask how the approved instalments will be collected after closure and obtain that arrangement in writing.
If the request is declined or remains pending
Ask the issuer to state that outcome and explain the repayment treatment. Request the amount due on the existing statement, the due date and the authorised payment route. Do not infer that the transaction has been converted merely because you received an acknowledgement or saw a “processing” status.
Should you pay the bill while conversion is pending?
Yes, treat the statement and the issuer’s written payment instructions as controlling until the issuer confirms a different amount. A pending conversion does not, by itself, suspend the due date or erase the transaction. Ask what amount is due before the due date and pay at least the undisputed dues through a method the issuer authorises.
If you believe the transaction, fee or interest is wrong, identify the specific disputed amount in writing. Do not withhold an otherwise undisputed amount simply because an EMI request is unresolved. Keep the payment confirmation and note the date, amount and channel used.
After paying, ask the issuer to confirm how the payment was posted and whether any balance remains. If a later conversion changes the accounting, compare the revised statement with the written calculation you received. Report any mismatch promptly and keep both statements.

How closure timing works when dues remain
Under the RBI directions, an issuer must honour an eligible closure request within seven working days, subject to payment of all dues, and must notify the cardholder after closure. When outstanding dues exist, the issuer should disclose them when it receives the closure request rather than waiting for the next billing cycle. The seven-working-day period is calculated after excluding the days you take to clear those dues. See the Master Direction and the RBI FAQ.
Rank #3
The RBI directions specify a penalty of ₹500 per calendar day for delayed closure when there is no outstanding in the account. Do not present that amount as an automatic penalty while dues remain; the rule is tied to an account with no outstanding balance.
If you requested closure but the issuer says it cannot close the account because a pending EMI request or other dues remain, ask for an itemised statement and the exact amount needed to complete closure. Keep the closure request date and the date on which you cleared the stated dues. Those dates determine whether the seven-working-day requirement has been met.
What to check on your statements and messages
- Whether the original transaction is still listed as a regular purchase or has been replaced by an EMI entry.
- Whether principal, interest and any upfront discount are shown separately.
- Whether the due date changed, and whether the issuer notified you of that change.
- Whether a fee, cancellation charge or interest amount appeared after the card was blocked or cancelled.
- Whether the account number or statement cycle changed after the card action.
- Whether the issuer’s message gives a request number that matches your call, app request or branch acknowledgement.
A card cancellation email, an EMI acknowledgement and a statement can describe different stages. Keep all three; none alone proves that the conversion was completed.

If the issuer does not resolve it
Start with the issuer’s complaint process
Submit a formal complaint to the issuer’s grievance or nodal officer using the channel listed in its official communications or website. State the facts in date order: transaction date, EMI request date, card-blocking or cancellation date, statements received, payments made and responses received. Ask for a specific resolution, such as confirmation of approval and schedule, reversal of an incorrectly applied fee, or a written amount required to settle and close the account.
Save the complaint number and acknowledgement. A phone call can be useful, but follow it with a secure message or email so the request and the requested remedy are recorded.
When the RBI Ombudsman route is available
The RBI FAQ says a customer may approach the RBI Ombudsman when the issuer does not respond within 30 days, rejects the complaint wholly or partly, or the customer is not satisfied with the response or resolution. The RBI’s March 7, 2024 amendment describes the option where a satisfactory response is not received within a maximum of one month. Review the conditions in the RBI FAQ and the March 7, 2024 amendment before escalating.

Your complaint file should contain:
- the EMI request or service reference;
- the purchase receipt or transaction record;
- statements showing the transaction and any later EMI entry;
- the card-blocking, cancellation or closure confirmation;
- issuer emails, messages, call references and complaint acknowledgement;
- a short timeline of events and payments; and
- the exact outcome you requested.
These records allow the Ombudsman or issuer to distinguish a processing delay from a billing error and to see whether a due date was missed while the request remained unresolved.

Stopping payment because the card was cancelled
Risk: The account may still have an outstanding balance and a live due date.
Safer alternative: Obtain the amount due in writing and pay at least the undisputed dues through the authorised channel.
Assuming cancellation cancels the EMI
Risk: Card status and account balance are separate questions. The original transaction may remain payable.
Safer alternative: Ask whether the account is blocked or closed and request the conversion or repayment outcome separately.
Counting seven working days from the closure request without clearing dues
Risk: The closure clock excludes the days taken to clear outstanding dues.

Safer alternative: Record when the issuer disclosed the dues, when you paid them and when closure was confirmed.
Accepting “no-cost EMI” without checking the statement
Risk: A no-cost offer can still involve principal, interest and an upfront discount that should be disclosed clearly.
Safer alternative: Compare the pre-conversion disclosure with the separate EMI entries on the statement.
Relying on a verbal promise
Risk: You may not be able to prove the quoted amount, date or payment instruction.
Safer alternative: Ask for a written response containing the request number, status, calculation, due date and next action.
A practical decision sequence
- If the card is only blocked, keep the account open for communication and obtain the EMI status and amount due.
- If closure has been requested, obtain the outstanding figure immediately and ask how a pending conversion affects settlement.
- Before the due date, pay the undisputed amount using the issuer-approved method unless written instructions state a different amount.
- After the issuer’s response, check the statement for the disclosed principal, interest, discount and instalment schedule.
- If the issuer does not respond within the RBI FAQ’s stated period, rejects the complaint or gives an unsatisfactory resolution, preserve the file and consider the RBI Ombudsman route.
The central issue is not the plastic card’s status but the credit-card account’s recorded balance and the issuer’s documented decision on the EMI request. Written confirmation, timely payment of undisputed dues and a complete complaint record protect you while those two issues are being resolved.
