A block may stop new card transactions, but it is not a guaranteed way to stop EMI debits or subscriptions. EMI treatment depends on the issuer’s agreement and the reason for the block. Recurring card payments must be handled separately with the merchant and through the issuer’s mandate controls.

In practical terms, a block changes whether transactions can be authorised. Closure ends the card account itself. Neither action, by itself, proves that every EMI, subscription or merchant agreement has been cancelled.
| Issue | Temporary block | Account closure |
|---|---|---|
| Account relationship | Continues while transactions are temporarily curtailed. | Terminates after the issuer completes its closure process. |
| EMIs | Do not assume instalments continue unchanged; the block reason and issuer terms control. | Some issuers may debit remaining EMI principal and applicable charges together. |
| Recurring payments | May still post, depending on the issuer and transaction path. | Do not assume every merchant mandate or service contract is cancelled automatically. |
| What you should do | Ask whether the status is temporary, permanent, loss-related or delinquency-related. | Obtain the current outstanding amount, request closure through an approved channel and settle the amount required by the issuer. |
What happens to EMI instalments after a card is blocked?
There is no single India-wide outcome for every EMI plan. Read the cardholder agreement, the EMI conversion terms and the notice that describes your particular block. A block can be triggered by a lost-card report, suspected fraud, an overdue account, a customer request or an issuer control. Those statuses do not necessarily receive identical treatment.
A block may leave the account open
Because a temporary block does not end the account relationship, the issuer can continue to maintain the account and its ledger. That does not mean the EMI schedule is guaranteed to run exactly as before. The agreement may allow the issuer to suspend or cancel an EMI facility when the card enters a particular block status.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIssuer terms can cancel an EMI facility on block status
Federal Bank’s published terms state that an EMI facility may be cancelled automatically if the card comes under block status, including specified circumstances such as a lost-card report. If that clause applies, the remaining amount can become payable under the card’s terms rather than continuing as the original monthly instalments.
That is an issuer-specific example, not a universal rule. A block caused by a fraud investigation, a customer-requested temporary freeze and a block caused by overdue payments may be handled differently. Ask the issuer to identify the clause and status being applied to your account.

Do not confuse blocking with EMI foreclosure
Foreclosure is the deliberate early settlement of an EMI plan. Blocking is a transaction restriction. You may request foreclosure separately, but the issuer can also have contractual rights to cancel or accelerate an EMI facility when the account is blocked or closed. Confirm whether any amount quoted is:
- the next scheduled instalment;
- the remaining principal;
- interest already accrued;
- a foreclosure or processing charge;
- taxes or other permitted fees; or
- an amount that will be posted immediately versus at the next statement date.
What happens to EMIs when the account is closed?
Closing the card does not erase the balance. RBI directions require the issuer to provide information about outstanding dues when a closure request is received rather than waiting for the next billing cycle. Closure is subject to payment of the dues required under the issuer’s process.

Some issuers consolidate the remaining EMI principal
Axis Bank and Canara Bank terms provide examples in which outstanding EMI principal may be debited as a consolidated amount if the card is closed before all instalments have posted. The final figure can include applicable charges, accrued interest and finance charges according to the relevant agreement and your payment history.
Therefore, an account closure can make a large amount payable sooner than the original EMI schedule. It does not happen identically for every card. Before submitting a closure request, obtain a written or app-based calculation showing the remaining principal, charges, taxes, payment due date and whether any amount will be refunded or reversed.
Closure does not mean the balance disappears
After the account is closed, any amount still owed remains a debt that must be paid under the issuer’s instructions. Keep making payments through the channel the issuer specifies until the balance is zero and you receive confirmation that no amount remains. Do not rely on the card becoming unusable as evidence that the account is financially settled.

Can a subscription charge a card that is temporarily blocked?
It can. American Express India states in an issuer-specific FAQ that recurring bills may post as usual while its card is temporarily blocked. This demonstrates why a block should not be used as a substitute for cancelling a service or withdrawing its payment mandate. Other issuers or transaction types may decline a recurring charge, but no universal result should be assumed.

Why a block may not stop a recurring charge
Recurring payments can follow a stored-credential or e-mandate process rather than a new, ordinary point-of-sale transaction. The merchant, payment network and issuer may process a previously authorised instruction under rules that differ from a one-time purchase. A temporary block can therefore prevent ordinary card use while leaving a recurring instruction active.
Cancel the service and the payment authority separately
To stop a subscription, complete both tasks where applicable:
- Cancel the service with the merchant using its account page, written support channel or the method specified in the contract. Save the cancellation reference and effective date.
- Withdraw the card mandate through your issuer’s online facility or other supported channel. RBI’s framework provides for online withdrawal of an e-mandate; after withdrawal, further recurring transactions under that mandate should not be allowed, subject to the circular’s exception for a transaction already in the processing pipeline.
- Check the issuer’s pending-authorisations and upcoming-payment information. A notice or debit already queued before withdrawal may be treated differently from a new request.
- Review the next statement and dispute an unauthorised debit promptly through the issuer’s prescribed process.
Merchant cancellation ends the service obligation. Mandate withdrawal controls the payment instruction. Neither step should be omitted when the goal is to stop both the service and future card debits.
Will replacing the card stop every subscription?
No general rule establishes that a replacement card or account closure automatically stops every recurring service. RBI requires explicit consent for a replacement card when the cardholder requested the block. That consent requirement concerns issuance of the replacement card; it is not a promise that all merchant mandates will disappear.

Mastercard describes its Automatic Billing Updater as a service that supplies updated payment credentials to merchants or acquirers when cards expire or are renewed. That description does not prove that every replacement, every issuer or every merchant participates, nor does it show that a particular subscription will be stopped. Contact the issuer and merchant instead of relying on card-number changes.
Choose the right action for your situation
Use a temporary block when the card may be at risk
A block is appropriate as an immediate containment measure if the card is misplaced, stolen or showing suspicious activity. Report the event through the issuer’s emergency channel, ask whether the status is temporary or permanent and request a replacement if needed. Then review transactions, protect any linked accounts and handle recurring mandates separately.
Request closure when you are ending the account
Closure is the relevant action when you no longer want the credit relationship, have completed repayment and are prepared to settle any amount the issuer requires. Ask for the closure procedure and the exact outstanding amount before submitting the request.
Withdraw a mandate when one merchant must stop charging
If the problem is one subscription, a card block or account closure may be excessive. Cancel the subscription with the merchant and withdraw its e-mandate. This targets the recurring instruction without changing unrelated access to the card account.
How to block a card without losing track of your EMIs
- Identify the reason. Tell the issuer whether the card is lost, stolen, compromised, temporarily unavailable or affected by an overdue amount. The reason can determine the EMI treatment.
- Record the status. Save the app confirmation, service-request number, timestamp and the wording used for the block. Ask whether it is temporary, permanent or linked to replacement.
- Ask about every EMI. Request the current principal, next due date, interest, fees and whether the EMI facility will continue, be cancelled or be consolidated.
- Check recurring mandates. Download or note active mandates and upcoming recurring transactions. Do not assume the block has cancelled them.
- Protect essential services. Move legitimate subscriptions to another payment method only after confirming the merchant’s cancellation or update rules, so you do not create duplicate billing.
- Monitor statements. Check pending and posted transactions during the following billing cycle and report anything you did not authorise.
How to close the account safely
- Stop new spending and save records. Download recent statements, EMI schedules, reward details and dispute correspondence before requesting closure.
- Request the outstanding-dues figure. Ask for the total due as of a stated date, including remaining EMI principal, accrued interest, foreclosure or other permitted charges and taxes.
- Ask whether closure accelerates EMIs. Get a direct answer on whether the remaining principal will be posted as one consolidated amount, and request the calculation in writing.
- Cancel merchant services. End subscriptions with merchants independently. Keep cancellation confirmations and note any final billing date.
- Withdraw mandates. Use the issuer’s e-mandate facility for each recurring instruction that should no longer be honoured. Check for a pipeline transaction covered by the RBI exception.
- Pay through the approved method. Use the payment channel and reference supplied by the issuer. Keep proof of payment.
- Submit the closure request. Use the issuer’s supported app, website, branch or customer-care process. Record the request number and date.
- Obtain closure confirmation. RBI’s direction says a closure request should be honoured within seven working days, subject to payment of all dues, with notice to the cardholder after closure. If that period passes, escalate with the request number and payment evidence.
- Verify the aftermath. Check that the account shows closed, no new fee or EMI has appeared, and any credit-report entry is updated according to the issuer’s reporting cycle.
Questions to ask the issuer before you act
- Is this a temporary block, a permanent block, a loss or theft status, a fraud restriction or an overdue-account restriction?
- Will each existing EMI continue on its schedule, be cancelled, or be posted as a consolidated outstanding amount?
- What is the current remaining principal for every EMI?
- Which foreclosure, finance, processing or tax charges apply, and are they one-time or recurring?
- Can recurring mandates still be presented while the card is blocked?
- How do I withdraw each e-mandate, and is any transaction already in the processing pipeline?
- What exact amount must be paid before closure can be completed?
- Which channel will provide written confirmation of the block, mandate withdrawal or closure?
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Assuming a blocked card means no payment can ever post
A blocked card can still have recurring transactions presented, as the American Express India example shows. Check mandates and statements instead of treating the block as a payment guarantee.

Assuming closure preserves the original EMI schedule
Some issuer terms allow the remaining principal to be debited together when the account closes. Ask for the closure calculation before paying or cancelling.
Relying only on a replacement card
Credential-updating services may pass new details to participating merchants, while other merchants may decline or continue to contact you. Cancel the service and withdraw its mandate directly.
Stopping payment without cancelling the service
Blocking or withdrawing a mandate can stop collection without ending the underlying subscription contract. Cancel with the merchant and retain proof to avoid later disputes or contractual charges.
Ignoring a small residual balance
Interest, taxes or a final adjustment can appear after the apparent last payment. Confirm a zero balance and account closure rather than discarding the card and assuming the matter is finished.
Worked examples
Lost card with an active phone-plan EMI
You report the card lost and request a block. The issuer confirms that the card account remains open but says the lost-card status can cancel the EMI facility under its terms. Ask for the resulting amount and due date, arrange payment, request a replacement only with explicit consent and separately update or cancel the phone-plan mandate.
Closing a card with six instalments remaining
You request closure after paying the latest statement. The issuer calculates the remaining principal and permitted charges and posts them as a consolidated amount under its closure terms. Pay that amount through the approved channel, cancel merchant mandates and retain the closure notice.
Streaming service still bills after a temporary block
The card is blocked, but a recurring debit posts. Cancel the streaming service, withdraw its e-mandate through the issuer and check whether the debit was already in the processing pipeline. If the charge was not authorised after withdrawal, use the issuer’s dispute process.

Bottom line for an India-issued card
Block, close and cancel are three separate decisions. A block restricts transactions while the credit relationship continues; closure ends that relationship; merchant cancellation and mandate withdrawal stop recurring services and payment instructions. Before acting, obtain the issuer’s current EMI calculation and status in writing, then handle each subscription with both the merchant and the issuer.
