Possibly, but the available evidence does not show that U.S. iPhone prices have already risen because of tariffs. Tariffs can raise Apple’s costs, and future price increases are one possible response. Apple could also absorb some costs, adjust its sourcing or product mix, or wait for policy changes. The result depends on the duties that apply to a particular product and when they apply—not on a single headline tariff rate.
How tariffs could affect the price you pay for an iPhone
A tariff is a tax on an imported product or material. If a duty applies to an iPhone or to goods used to make it, it can increase costs somewhere in Apple’s supply chain. That does not automatically mean Apple adds the same amount to the phone’s U.S. retail price. The company might absorb some of the cost, change where it sources components, alter product or sales decisions, or raise prices.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said on a June 2025 earnings call, “We will do our best to keep our prices as low as possible.” That is a statement of intent, not a promise that prices will stay unchanged. In the same call, Apple estimated a $900 million impact on its costs for the June quarter, conditional on then-current global tariff rates, policies and applications remaining unchanged for the rest of that quarter. It was a company cost estimate for a specific period—not a $900 million increase in consumer prices, nor a forecast for the cost of any one iPhone.

Apple received some tariff relief in 2025, but those announcements were tied to particular measures and dates. They should not be read as proof that iPhones are exempt from every current or future duty. The later policy developments also make it important to separate a broad tariff estimate from the rate that applies to an individual product.

| Date | What was announced or reported | What it means for an iPhone |
|---|---|---|
| April 2025 | The White House and U.S. Customs and Border Protection excluded smartphones and other electronics from the reciprocal-tariff scheme. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told the Associated Press that electronics were exempt from reciprocal tariffs but would be included in forthcoming semiconductor tariffs. The AP also reported President Donald Trump said the products would remain subject to a 20% China tariff. | This was a dated and unsettled policy episode, not a permanent or comprehensive iPhone exemption. The statements described different tariff measures. |
| June 2025 | Apple said most products on its list—including iPhone, Mac, iPad, Apple Watch and Vision Pro—were then not subject to the global reciprocal tariffs announced in April, following Commerce’s initiation of a Section 232 semiconductor investigation. | Apple’s statement concerned the April reciprocal tariffs, not every possible duty on a device or its supply chain. |
| September 2025 | A White House fact sheet described reciprocal and country-specific measures then announced, including a 20% tariff on China, as well as Section 232 duties affecting sectors such as automobiles, copper, steel and aluminum. | This is a historical policy snapshot, not a determination of the tariff on an iPhone today. |
| February 2026 | The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative said a Supreme Court decision addressed only the President’s Reciprocal and Fentanyl Tariffs. USTR said other statutory tariffs remained, including Section 301 China tariffs ranging from 7.5% to 100% by product and Section 232 sectoral tariffs ranging from 10% to 50% by product. | Those ranges are USTR’s description of duties across products; they are not established iPhone rates. |
| September 2026 | The AP reported that a U.S.-China agreement covered lists of selected products. Citing Capital Economics economist Leah Fahy, it reported an estimate that the broad average U.S. tariff rate on China would fall from around 22% to roughly 20.5%, compared with roughly 11% before Trump’s return to office. | These are attributed averages across trade with China, not the tariff on an iPhone or any specific Apple product. |
Tariff measures can change, and a product’s treatment can depend on its customs classification, country of origin and the legal measure in force. USTR’s presidential tariff actions tracker is an official index of actions and trade arrangements, but it is not itself a product-level rate ruling. The sources cited here do not establish the current duty for a particular iPhone model.
Why Apple’s manufacturing footprint matters
Apple’s exposure is complicated by a supply chain built across multiple countries. The Associated Press reported in April 2025 that most iPhones had been manufactured in China and that shifting production to the United States quickly would be difficult. It described building U.S. capacity as a multiyear, multibillion-dollar undertaking.

That constraint helps explain why a tariff-driven move to U.S. production is not an immediate fix for prices. In the same AP report, Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives estimated that a hypothetical $1,000 iPhone made in the United States could cost more than $3,000 and suggested domestic production could not happen before 2028. This was an analyst’s scenario and forecast—not an observed price, a settled manufacturing-cost calculation, or an estimate of how much tariffs would add to today’s phones.
Apple’s investment announcements also need to be read narrowly. AP reported that Apple announced $500 billion in U.S. investment and plans for 20,000 jobs through 2028 in February 2025; it noted that the plans were not a promise to make iPhones domestically. In August 2025, the White House described a $600 billion Apple U.S. manufacturing investment commitment. The White House announcement did not say that all of that amount was for iPhone manufacturing or that the commitment qualified Apple for a particular tariff exemption.

What Apple might do instead of raising prices
A company facing higher import costs has more than one option. Apple could absorb some of the increase, alter sourcing over time, adjust product mix or margins, or pass some costs on through prices. The eventual choice may differ by product and timing.
In April 2025, Forrester analyst Dipanjan Chatterjee told the AP that Apple could absorb some tariff-induced costs in the short term, citing its services business. That is an analyst’s view from that period, not a guarantee about Apple’s current plans. Neither that comment nor Apple’s stated aim to keep prices low establishes what the company will do if duties change.

What U.S. iPhone buyers should check
If you are deciding whether to buy now or wait, there is no evidence here for a specific tariff-related price increase, a date when one would begin, or a model-by-model ranking of tariff exposure. Make the decision using the phone and purchase terms in front of you rather than assuming that a general China tariff figure predicts a store price.
Recommended Free Tools
- Compare the exact model and storage tier. Use current Apple Store and retailer listings; prices and availability can change independently of tariff announcements.
- Check the seller and warranty. A listing’s seller, return terms and warranty may matter as much as a possible future price change.
- Use country of origin only when it is disclosed. Do not assume every iPhone has the same origin or tariff treatment from a broad statement about China.
- Factor in timing. If you need a phone now, a possible future price change is uncertain; if you can wait, monitor actual listed prices and specific policy changes rather than relying on forecasts.
For a current product-level answer, the relevant customs classification, origin and active legal measures must be checked together. A broad average tariff on Chinese goods, or an old electronics exclusion, cannot establish whether a particular iPhone is covered or how any duty would affect its retail price.
