Constellation Brands reported a stronger second quarter of fiscal 2027 on revenue and earnings, but the headline requires an important qualification: the company’s beer shipments grew 5.5% while beer depletions fell 0.6%. Management said distributors were rebuilding inventory days on hand, so shipments into the distribution system were not a direct read-through to consumer purchases.
Net sales reached $2.633 billion, reported earnings per share (EPS) was $3.32 and comparable EPS was $3.74. The earnings release does not disclose the analyst consensus figures behind the phrase “beats estimates,” so the size of any earnings or revenue beat cannot be independently confirmed from company-reported information alone.

What Constellation Brands reported for the quarter
The quarter ended Aug. 31, 2026, was Constellation Brands’ second quarter of fiscal 2027. In its Oct. 6, 2026 earnings release, the company reported higher sales and both higher reported and comparable EPS than in the year-earlier quarter.

|---|---|---|---|
| Net sales | $2.633 billion | Up 6% | Company-reported consolidated revenue |
| Reported EPS | $3.32 | Up 25% | Reported, or GAAP, measure |
| Comparable EPS | $3.74 | Up 3% | Company-defined non-GAAP measure |
Reported EPS and comparable EPS are not interchangeable. Reported EPS reflects the accounting results presented under generally accepted accounting principles. Comparable EPS removes or adjusts items that Constellation classifies as non-comparable and is accompanied by a reconciliation in the company’s release. A headline that cites $3.32 is referring to reported EPS; a headline that cites $3.74 is referring to the comparable measure.
#1 Best Overall
The company’s results establish year-over-year growth, but they do not establish how far the figures were above or below Wall Street’s consensus. A reader should treat “beat estimates” as a market-comparison claim only when it is paired with a dated, independently identified consensus source.
Why beer shipments and beer depletions told different stories
The central issue in this quarter is the gap between shipments and depletions. Shipments are cases Constellation sells into its distributor network. Depletions are the distributor sales onward to retailers or other customers, and therefore are generally closer to the pace of product moving through the channel to shoppers. Neither measure is a complete consumer-demand survey, but they answer different questions.
| Beer measure | Q2 fiscal 2027 result | Year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|
| Net sales | $2,473.6 million | Up 5% |
| Shipments | 123.9 million 24-pack, 12-ounce case equivalents | Up 5.5% |
| Depletions | Company-reported beer depletion volume | Down 0.6% |
What inventory rebuilding means
Management said distributors entered fiscal 2027 with below-average inventories and ordered additional product to rebuild their inventory days on hand. Constellation’s Oct. 7 Form 10-Q quantified $170.9 million of shipment-volume growth associated with that rebuilding. The filing also said shipment volume is expected to generally align with depletion volume over fiscal 2027.

The extra cases improved sales into the channel during the quarter, while the 0.6% depletion decline indicates that distributor sell-through was slightly lower than a year earlier. As inventories normalize, future shipment growth could slow even if depletions stabilize; conversely, shipments could improve again if distributors need to restock after a period of strong sell-through.
Additional timing context from management
In its quarterly recap, Constellation attributed weaker-than-expected industry off-premise activity in June and July to World Cup-related expectations that did not materialize as strongly as anticipated. The company said distributor inventories were healthier entering the third quarter. That is management’s explanation for the timing and should not be treated as an independent measurement of consumer behavior.

Beer brands had sharply different depletion trends
Aggregate beer depletions were down 0.6%, but the portfolio was not moving uniformly. Constellation reported the following brand-level depletion changes for the quarter:
| Brand or group | Depletion trend |
|---|---|
| Modelo Especial | Down approximately 2% |
| Corona Extra | Down approximately 5% |
| Pacifico | Up approximately 19% |
| Victoria | Up approximately 15% |
| Modelo Chelada brands | Up approximately 5% |
The declines in Modelo Especial and Corona Extra matter because they are large, established labels, while the double-digit increases in Pacifico and Victoria show that growth was still available in parts of the portfolio. The combination can produce share gains even when total depletion volume is slightly negative: a company can take share from competing products while the overall category or its own blended volume is soft.
What the share figures do and do not show
Constellation said its beer business was the leading dollar and volume share gainer in Circana U.S. tracked channels during the quarter and that five of the 15 largest dollar share gainers were its brands. Those rankings are company-attributed and limited to the Circana U.S. channels tracked in the measurement. They should not be read as a claim about every retail channel, every geography or the entire beverage market.
Nicholas Fink, Constellation’s president and chief executive officer, said the portfolio continued to resonate with consumers and that the company was seeing accelerating dollar and volume share gains in Beer and Wine & Spirits relative to the first quarter. He characterized Constellation as the number-one dollar share gainer in beverage alcohol for the quarter. That is management’s interpretation of the share data; the depletion figures provide the counterweight showing that share gains and softer absolute demand can occur at the same time.
Beer revenue rose, but profitability was under pressure
Beer segment net sales increased 5% to $2,473.6 million. Operating income increased only 1% to $964.2 million, and operating margin fell 160 basis points to 39.0%.
Rank #3
| Beer profitability measure | Q2 fiscal 2027 | Year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|
| Operating income | $964.2 million | Up 1% |
| Operating margin | 39.0% | Down 160 basis points |
The margin decline shows why a topline-only reading is incomplete. Lower tariff expenses and favorable fixed-cost absorption helped the segment, but those benefits were more than offset by higher marketing investment and other selling, general and administrative spending. Constellation is spending to support the brands and execution while accepting lower near-term operating leverage.
For investors, the key distinction is between growth that comes from additional cases moving through distributors and growth that converts into operating profit. In this quarter, beer sales grew faster than operating income, and operating income grew faster than depletions only because the comparison includes shipments tied to inventory rebuilding. The 39.0% margin is therefore an important condition attached to the positive sales result.
Wine and Spirits provided a second growth engine
Constellation’s Wine and Spirits segment reported a 17% increase in net sales and a 10.2% increase in depletions for the quarter. Those figures contrast with the slight decline in beer depletions and helped support the consolidated 6% sales increase.
Comparisons in this segment need context. The Form 10-Q explains that year-to-date reported sales comparisons are affected by wine divestitures completed in 2025. It also describes continued distributor inventory reductions expected during the second half of the fiscal year. As a result, a strong quarterly depletion rate does not remove the need to examine the portfolio changes and channel inventory effects when assessing the full-year trajectory.
The company’s share commentary covered both Beer and Wine & Spirits, but the evidence for each segment is still different: beer had a shipment-to-depletion gap and a detailed brand mix, while Wine and Spirits showed 17% sales growth and 10.2% depletion growth in the quarter alongside the divestiture and inventory considerations.

How to interpret the “beat estimates” headline
Constellation’s official release supports the reported $3.32 EPS, $3.74 comparable EPS and $2.633 billion of net sales. It does not state the analyst consensus numbers used by financial news services. Without a dated consensus source, readers cannot calculate the magnitude of an earnings or revenue beat from the company release alone.
A careful reading separates three claims:
- Company-reported outcome: Sales and both EPS measures increased from the prior-year quarter.
- Market comparison: Whether those numbers exceeded consensus depends on the specific estimate set, publication date and treatment of reported versus comparable EPS.
- Quality of growth: Beer shipments increased 5.5%, but beer depletions declined 0.6%, and beer margin fell to 39.0%.
Those claims can all be true at once. A result may exceed a consensus estimate while still revealing softer underlying sell-through or weaker margins. Conversely, a share-price rise after the release does not prove that consumer demand accelerated; it may reflect expectations, guidance changes or the market’s view that inventory issues are temporary.
Fiscal 2027 outlook: reported EPS changed, other targets held
Constellation updated its fiscal 2027 reported EPS outlook to $11.85-$12.55. It reaffirmed comparable EPS guidance of $11.20-$11.90, operating cash flow of $2.4-$2.5 billion and free cash flow of $1.6-$1.7 billion.
| Fiscal 2027 target | Updated or reaffirmed range | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Reported EPS | $11.85-$12.55 | Updated |
| Comparable EPS | $11.20-$11.90 | Reaffirmed |
| Operating cash flow | $2.4-$2.5 billion | Reaffirmed |
| Free cash flow | $1.6-$1.7 billion | Reaffirmed |
The different reported and comparable EPS ranges are deliberate. Reported EPS includes items that the company excludes from its comparable calculation, so the two ranges should be compared with their respective quarterly measures rather than treated as two versions of the same forecast. The unchanged cash-flow targets also indicate that management did not reduce its fiscal-year cash-generation objectives despite the quarter’s beer margin pressure.

Whether depletions catch up with shipments
The most direct test of the inventory explanation is whether shipment volume and depletion volume move closer together as distributors finish rebuilding days on hand. A narrowing gap would make reported shipment growth a cleaner indicator of underlying demand. A persistent gap would suggest that channel inventory, rather than consumer pull-through, is still driving reported sales.

Whether major brands recover
Investors will want to see whether Modelo Especial’s approximately 2% decline and Corona Extra’s approximately 5% decline are temporary quarter-specific softness or part of a longer pattern. Continued growth in Pacifico, Victoria and Modelo Chelada brands would help the mix, but it would not automatically offset weakness in larger labels.
Whether investment produces profitable share gains
Marketing and SG&A spending increased while beer operating margin fell to 39.0%. Future reports will show whether that investment improves volume and dollar share enough to restore operating leverage. Share gains that come with sustained margin compression have a different economic value from share gains accompanied by stable or rising margins.
How Wine and Spirits trends through the second half
The segment’s 10.2% depletion growth is encouraging, but the effects of 2025 wine divestitures and planned distributor inventory reductions will continue to shape comparisons. Reported sales, depletion volume and cash flow should be reviewed together rather than relying on one percentage.

Bottom line for readers
Constellation Brands’ second-quarter fiscal 2027 results were stronger on reported sales and EPS, and the company continued to gain measured share in Circana U.S. tracked channels. The qualification is that beer shipments rose 5.5% while beer depletions fell 0.6%, with management attributing much of the shipment increase to distributor inventory rebuilding. At the same time, Modelo Especial and Corona Extra depletions declined, beer operating margin dropped to 39.0%, and higher marketing and SG&A spending limited profit growth.
The updated reported EPS range of $11.85-$12.55 sits alongside reaffirmed comparable EPS guidance of $11.20-$11.90 and unchanged cash-flow targets. The next meaningful evidence will be whether distributor sell-through improves and whether the company can turn share gains into growth without further margin erosion.
