Under India’s Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) framework, a conservative hybrid fund must keep 75%–90% in debt and 10%–25% in equity and equity-related instruments. A multi-asset allocation fund must invest at least 10% in each of at least three asset classes, but the rules do not prescribe one standard equity-and-debt mix. That makes the multi-asset label broader and the individual scheme’s portfolio especially important.
For either category, do not treat the name as a complete risk assessment. Compare the latest portfolio disclosure, the scheme information document and the scheme’s SEBI Riskometer before deciding whether a particular fund belongs in your plan.

The essential difference between the two categories
These categories answer different questions. Conservative hybrid is an allocation band: how much of the portfolio must be in debt and how much may be in equity. Multi-asset allocation is a diversification rule: how many asset classes must be represented and the minimum exposure to each.
What a conservative hybrid fund must hold
SEBI’s category framework requires conservative hybrid funds to invest 75%–90% of assets in debt and money-market instruments and 10%–25% in equity and equity-related instruments. The equity ceiling is therefore explicit, and the category remains debt-heavy by design. The definition appears in SEBI’s investor education material and in its March 2026 categorization circular: SEBI Mutual Fund for Intermediate and SEBI’s March 2026 circular.

The band describes the permitted structure, not a promise that the unit price will remain stable. Equity holdings can fluctuate, and the debt portion can change in value as interest rates, credit conditions and portfolio holdings change. A debt majority generally changes the pattern of risk compared with a fund that has a much larger equity allocation, but it does not remove investment risk or guarantee capital protection.
What a multi-asset allocation fund must hold
A multi-asset allocation fund must invest at least 10% in each of at least three asset classes. The category rule does not require every fund to use the same three classes, to divide assets equally or to maintain one fixed equity-to-debt ratio. A scheme may use a materially different mix from another scheme while both remain in the same category. The minimum-three-class requirement is set out in the same SEBI materials linked above.
That flexibility can be useful when a manager changes the mix among equity, debt and other permitted asset classes, but it also means the category name tells you less about a fund’s current risk than the actual portfolio does. Two multi-asset funds can have different equity weights, different debt exposures and different allocations to their third or additional asset classes.
Why the labels cannot rank funds by themselves
SEBI reports 18 conservative hybrid schemes and 34 multi-asset allocation schemes for April–June 2026. Those counts show that you are comparing individual schemes within each category, not selecting a single uniform product. They do not establish which category or scheme has better returns, lower volatility or better outcomes. See SEBI’s April–June 2026 mutual-fund statistics.

How to think about risk before comparing a fund
Risk is not one number. For this comparison, separate the risk created by equity exposure, the risk inside the debt allocation and the uncertainty created by a flexible multi-asset mandate.

Equity-market exposure
Equity and equity-related instruments can produce larger short-term price movements than high-quality, short-duration debt. A conservative hybrid scheme’s category band limits equity exposure to 10%–25%, but the exact percentage within that band still matters. A scheme near the upper end of the band will not have the same equity sensitivity as one near the lower end.
In a multi-asset scheme, equity may be a major portion, a modest portion or close to the minimum needed to satisfy the scheme’s strategy. The category label does not reveal that position. Check the latest portfolio rather than assuming that every multi-asset fund is either equity-oriented or balanced in the conventional sense.

Debt-market and credit exposure
The word debt does not identify one uniform risk level. Interest-rate sensitivity, the maturity profile, issuer quality, concentration and liquidity can all affect the debt portion’s behavior. A conservative hybrid fund can therefore differ from another conservative hybrid fund even when both satisfy the same 75%–90% debt requirement.
For a multi-asset fund, debt is only one part of the total structure. Its debt allocation may be large or small, and the rest of the portfolio may introduce different sources of price movement. Read the holdings and the stated strategy instead of using the category as a substitute for security-level information.
Diversification and correlation
Holding several asset classes can diversify the sources of return and loss, but diversification is not a guarantee that losses will be avoided. Asset classes can fall together, and the practical benefit depends on the actual weights, instruments and rebalancing approach. The requirement to use at least three classes tells you that the portfolio is broader than a single- or two-class mandate; it does not tell you how independent those exposures will be in a stressed market.

Manager discretion and portfolio change
The multi-asset category gives the manager more room to alter the mix while remaining within the category rule. That flexibility can change the fund’s risk profile over time. A conservative hybrid manager also has room to move within the 10%–25% equity and 75%–90% debt bands. Review dated portfolio disclosures so that your assessment reflects the fund you would own now, not an older allocation.

SEBI requires mutual-fund schemes to display a Riskometer, including hybrid-fund schemes. It is designed to communicate the risk level assigned to the particular scheme, and it should be read alongside the current portfolio and strategy. SEBI explains the tool in its investor guidance: Understanding the Riskometer.
The Riskometer does not replace your own comparison. It is one current disclosure, while the portfolio shows what the scheme actually held at a stated date and the scheme information document explains the permitted strategy. A category label, a Riskometer and a portfolio are three different pieces of information.
A step-by-step method for comparing two schemes
Use the following sequence when you are comparing a conservative hybrid scheme with a multi-asset allocation scheme, or comparing two funds in the same category.
- Define the decision you are making. Write down whether you are looking for a debt-majority allocation with a bounded equity sleeve, or broader exposure across several asset classes. Also record your investment horizon, need for withdrawals and ability to tolerate a temporary fall in value. A category cannot determine suitability without that context.
- Confirm the official category. Open the latest scheme information document and verify whether the scheme is classified as conservative hybrid or multi-asset allocation under SEBI’s framework. Do not rely on a distributor’s shorthand or an old product description.
- Read the mandated allocation. For a conservative hybrid scheme, check that the stated policy fits the 75%–90% debt and 10%–25% equity-and-related-instruments ranges. For a multi-asset scheme, identify the three or more asset classes and confirm that the stated policy requires at least 10% in each. This step tells you the permitted structure, not the current holdings.
- Record the latest actual allocation. Use the most recent portfolio disclosure and note the percentage in equity, debt and every other asset class. Write down the portfolio date. A current allocation that is materially different from an older factsheet can change the comparison.
- Map the debt sleeve. Review the types of instruments, issuer mix, maturity or duration information, concentration and liquidity disclosures that the scheme provides. Two funds with similar debt percentages can have different sensitivities because the securities inside that percentage are different.
- Map the equity sleeve. Note the equity percentage, whether the exposure is broad or concentrated, and whether related instruments are used. In a conservative hybrid fund, the permitted range is narrow enough to frame the comparison, but the location within that range still matters.
- Identify every non-debt, non-equity exposure. In a multi-asset fund, list the third and any additional asset classes, their weights and the instruments used to obtain them. Do not assume that the third class is the same across schemes or that a multi-asset portfolio is evenly split.
- Check the current Riskometer. Record the risk label shown for each scheme and the date or document in which it appears. Treat a change in the Riskometer or a material change in allocation as a reason to revisit the comparison, not as an administrative detail.
- Read the strategy and rebalancing language. Look for how the scheme may move between asset classes, what triggers a rebalance and how much discretion the manager has. The multi-asset rule establishes minimum exposure, while the strategy explains how the portfolio may behave between those minimums.
- Compare costs and transaction terms from the documents. Check the current expense information, exit-load provisions and other charges in the scheme documents. Do not infer that one category is cheaper or more expensive; category definitions do not establish a fee ranking.
- Check performance only on a like-for-like basis. If you examine returns, match the same period, plan or share class, benchmark and risk context. A return figure without those qualifiers is not a fair category comparison. Past performance also cannot turn a category label into a guarantee.
- Write a one-page decision record. Save the category, portfolio date, asset weights, Riskometer, key debt and equity characteristics, costs and the reason the allocation fits your objective. Revisit the record when the scheme documents or your circumstances change.
How the allocation rules translate into practical choices
When the conservative hybrid structure may be the clearer fit
An investor who specifically wants debt to remain the dominant allocation and equity to stay within a defined 10%–25% band can evaluate a conservative hybrid scheme against that explicit framework. The advantage of the category rule is clarity about the broad equity ceiling and debt floor. You still need to inspect the current position within those bands, the debt holdings and the Riskometer.

This structure should not be described as risk-free, capital-protected or equivalent to a bank deposit. The category name says “conservative” relative to other hybrid structures; it does not eliminate market, credit or interest-rate risk.
When the multi-asset structure may be the clearer fit
An investor who wants a portfolio spanning at least three asset classes may prefer to examine multi-asset allocation schemes. The category can provide a broader framework than a debt-and-equity-only mandate, but the trade-off is less uniformity between schemes. You must decide whether the actual mix, the manager’s rebalancing approach and the current Riskometer match your objective.
Do not select a multi-asset scheme merely because the label sounds more diversified. Diversification has to be visible in the holdings, weights and strategy documents. A fund that meets the minimum three-class rule can still look very different from another fund in the same category.
When neither label answers the question
If your decision depends on a specific time horizon, withdrawal schedule, liquidity need or tolerance for loss, neither category name is enough. Use the scheme documents to test those requirements. If you cannot explain the current allocation and the main risks in plain language, pause the comparison rather than treating the category as a shortcut.
How to read the documents without being misled by a headline
Start with the scheme information document
The scheme information document sets out the investment objective, permitted instruments, allocation ranges, risk factors and operational terms. Use it to establish what the manager is allowed to do. It is the right place to check the official category and the strategy language, but it may not show the portfolio you would own today.

Then use the dated portfolio disclosure
The portfolio disclosure answers a different question: what the scheme held at a particular reporting date. Capture the date and the weights. For a conservative hybrid fund, compare the reported equity and debt shares with the permitted bands. For a multi-asset fund, identify every asset class and verify that the current mix makes sense alongside the stated strategy.
Use the Riskometer as a current risk signal
Find the Riskometer shown in the latest official material and note its level. Because SEBI applies the tool across categories, it can help you compare a conservative hybrid scheme with a multi-asset scheme without assuming that one category automatically has a lower risk label. It is still a snapshot and should be considered with the portfolio and strategy.
Separate policy from observation
A policy range is not the same as a current allocation. A category minimum is not the same as an equal-weight portfolio. Keep three notes in your comparison: what the fund must do, what it says it may do and what it actually held on the latest disclosed date.
Common comparison mistakes and their fixes
- Mistake: treating “conservative” as a guarantee. Fix: read the Riskometer and the debt and equity holdings; the label does not promise that the unit price cannot fall.
- Mistake: assuming every multi-asset fund has the same three assets. Fix: list the actual asset classes and weights for each scheme. The rule requires at least three classes, not one standard combination.
- Mistake: comparing a category rule with a single month’s performance. Fix: compare mandate, current portfolio, Riskometer and matched-period performance separately.
- Mistake: looking only at the equity percentage. Fix: inspect the quality, maturity and concentration of the debt sleeve and the instruments used for other asset classes.
- Mistake: using an undated factsheet. Fix: record the portfolio date and obtain the latest available disclosure before making a decision.
- Mistake: treating the number of schemes as a quality ranking. Fix: use SEBI’s April–June 2026 counts only to understand the size of the comparison set; scheme count does not show which fund is preferable.
- Mistake: assuming a wider mandate is automatically better diversification. Fix: assess actual correlations, weights and rebalancing language as described in the scheme documents; a minimum number of classes is not a promise of loss protection.
- Mistake: comparing returns without matching share class, period or benchmark. Fix: align those details and keep the risk context beside every performance number.
A practical worksheet for your final review
Before choosing between two schemes, answer these questions in writing:
- What is the official SEBI category?
- What allocation does the scheme mandate, and what did it hold on the latest disclosed date?
- For a conservative hybrid fund, where are the equity and debt percentages within their permitted ranges?
- For a multi-asset fund, which three or more asset classes are present, and what percentage is in each?
- What Riskometer level is displayed, and when was it assessed?
- What are the main debt risks described in the documents, including maturity, issuer quality, concentration and liquidity?
- What equity concentration or style risks are disclosed?
- How much discretion does the manager have to change the mix, and what rebalancing approach is described?
- What costs and exit terms apply to the specific plan or share class you are considering?
- Does the allocation fit your horizon, cash-flow needs and ability to tolerate a temporary loss?
If any answer depends on an assumption rather than a current official document, mark it for verification. That discipline is more reliable than choosing from the category name alone.
Bottom line
Choose the comparison framework first: conservative hybrid funds give you a defined debt-heavy range of 75%–90% debt and 10%–25% equity, while multi-asset allocation funds give you a minimum of 10% in each of at least three asset classes without prescribing one common mix. Then compare the individual scheme’s latest allocation, debt and equity exposures, strategy, Riskometer and costs. Neither category is a guarantee against loss, and neither category label is a substitute for reading the current scheme documents.
