Coinbase Wallet is now presented primarily as the Base app, with the former Coinbase Wallet experience available through Legacy mode. Crypto.com DeFi Wallet is now Crypto.com Onchain. Trust Wallet, MetaMask, and Plus Wallet continue under their current names, although their supported networks and interfaces can change.
That matters because a crypto wallet is not just an app for holding coins. The important questions are who controls the keys, which network a token uses, whether the wallet works with your devices and dApps, how recovery works, and what you pay when you move or swap assets. “Best” depends on those trade-offs—not on the number of coins shown in an app’s marketing.
Quick comparison
| Wallet | Custody | Platforms | Best suited to | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Base app / Coinbase Wallet Legacy mode | Self-custody in the wallet; Coinbase.com is separate and custodial | Mobile app and Base browser extension | Users who want Coinbase connectivity and a relatively guided interface | Base and Legacy modes do not support exactly the same assets |
| Trust Wallet | Self-custody | iOS and Android apps; Chrome and Brave extension | People seeking broad multi-chain coverage in a mobile-first wallet | Not every network listed by Trust works in every product, including the extension |
| MetaMask | Self-custody | Browser extension and mobile app | dApp users, especially those working across EVM networks | Custom networks require careful verification; some non-EVM access uses third-party Snaps |
| Crypto.com Onchain | Self-custody | Mobile app; Chrome and Brave extension | Crypto.com users who want a separate self-custody wallet | Do not confuse it with the custodial Crypto.com App |
| Plus Wallet | Described by the company as non-custodial | iOS and Android listings | Users evaluating a mobile wallet with a simple interface | Current official documentation does not provide a dependable consolidated network or fee table |
All five are self-custody options in their wallet products, meaning the recovery phrase or private keys are the route to the funds. That is different from leaving assets in an exchange account. Coinbase.com and the Crypto.com App are custodial services; Base and Crypto.com Onchain are not the same products.
1. Base app and Coinbase Wallet Legacy mode
Coinbase’s current consumer wallet experience is the Base app. Users can still access the former Coinbase Wallet interface through Legacy mode. The Base app does not require a Coinbase account for basic wallet use, and linking it to Coinbase.com does not turn the wallet into a custodial account. Transfers between the two are on-chain transactions and may incur network fees.

What it does well
- Provides a familiar route for users already using Coinbase.com.
- Offers mobile and browser-extension access.
- Supports Bitcoin and Solana in Base mode after enabling them from the home screen.
- Can support sponsored fees and batched transactions in some Base transactions, although the transaction screen still determines whether a fee applies.
Important limitations
Base mode and Legacy mode do not expose an identical asset list. BCH, ETC, XLM, and XRP are not supported in current Base mode; some remain accessible only through Legacy mode. Do not assume that an asset visible in an older Coinbase Wallet guide will be available in the current interface.
To check an asset before receiving it, open Send/Receive → Receive and search for the asset. A token may exist at your address on-chain but remain hidden or unusable if the current wallet mode does not support its network.
Good fit: Coinbase users who want a self-custody wallet and a clear connection to the Coinbase ecosystem. It is less suitable if you need one consistent interface for assets split across Base and Legacy support.
2. Trust Wallet
Trust Wallet is a self-custody wallet available on mobile, with a browser extension officially available for Chrome and Brave. Trust promotes coverage across more than 100 blockchain networks, but that broad figure should not be read as a guarantee that every listed chain works in the browser extension or with every feature.
What it does well
- Strong mobile orientation for users managing several blockchain ecosystems.
- Browser access for supported networks through Chrome and Brave.
- Encrypted cloud backup is available for an existing wallet through Settings → Wallets → Info → Cloud Backup, protected by a separate encryption password.
- Useful as a general-purpose wallet when your assets span more than one major network.
Recovery risk
Trust Wallet cannot recover a lost recovery phrase and does not have access to it. A cloud backup is not a replacement for understanding the recovery credentials: losing the encryption password or mishandling the recovery material can still create an access problem.
Before sending, confirm both the token and the network. A USDT balance, for example, can exist on several networks with different gas requirements and addresses. Choosing the wrong network can make the funds difficult or impossible to recover.

- Choose the colors that match your style: express your personality and your crypto management mood, color code your signers, one for each use (trading, staking, HOLDing...).
Good fit: users who prioritize mobile multi-chain coverage. It is not automatically the best option for desktop dApp users or for anyone who wants a provider to restore access.
3. MetaMask
MetaMask is no longer limited to Ethereum and ERC-20 tokens. Its current documentation covers Ethereum, Bitcoin, Solana, Tron, and numerous EVM networks. Access to some non-EVM ecosystems may depend on Snaps, which are generally third-party plug-ins, so users should assess the individual Snap rather than treating it as native support.
What it does well
- Well established for browser-based dApps and DeFi.
- Supports prelisted networks and manually added custom networks.
- Can connect compatible Ledger and Trezor hardware wallets.
- Offers mobile and extension versions.
Useful setup paths
Install only from the official MetaMask website: Get MetaMask → Chrome → Add to Chrome → Add extension. Cloned extensions and apps are a major security risk.
To add a prelisted network in the extension, open the top-right menu, choose Networks, scroll to Additional networks, and select Add. For a network that is not listed, use Networks → Add a custom network, then enter the RPC URL, chain ID, currency symbol, and block explorer.
MetaMask does not verify custom-network information. An incorrect RPC URL or chain ID can connect you to a malicious or unusable network. Networks added on one device also do not automatically appear on another, and they must be added again after reinstalling the app or extension.
To connect a hardware wallet, use Account dropdown → Add account or hardware wallet → Add hardware wallet. The documented Ledger and Trezor flow applies to EVM-based accounts. MetaMask recommends creating a recovery phrase on the hardware wallet rather than importing a software-wallet phrase that has already been exposed online.

Good fit: experienced dApp and DeFi users who want detailed network control. Beginners can use it, but custom RPC settings and third-party Snaps introduce more ways to make an expensive mistake.
4. Crypto.com Onchain
Crypto.com Onchain is the renamed version of Crypto.com DeFi Wallet. It is a self-custody wallet and should not be confused with the custodial Crypto.com App. The mobile wallet is complemented by a Wallet Extension for Chrome and Brave.
What it does well
- Separates self-custody wallet functions from the exchange-style Crypto.com App.
- Offers mobile and desktop-browser access.
- Supports custom networks through Wallet settings → Networks & RPC → + Add Custom Network.
- Its native Swap currently lists Cronos, Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Fantom, Avalanche, Polygon, Gnosis, Arbitrum, Optimism, and Solana, with actual token availability determined by the underlying integrations.
For the current supported-asset list, Crypto.com directs users to the wallet’s Receive button rather than relying on an old static article. This is the safer approach because wallet support changes.
There are several practical edge cases. Onchain supports BTC and LTC using SegWit addresses; imported legacy BTC or LTC balances may not display. A newly created XRP or XLM wallet requires at least 1 XRP or 1 XLM in its first receive transaction because of the networks’ minimum-balance rules. Onchain also does not support the EIP-681 QR-code format used by Coinbase, so scanning a Coinbase-generated payment QR code can fail.
Crypto.com says Onchain itself does not charge a network fee, but that does not make transfers free. The blockchain fee still applies, and swaps or third-party services may have their own costs.
Good fit: Crypto.com customers who understand that Onchain is separate from the Crypto.com App and want a self-custody companion. It is a poor choice if you expect the exchange to restore a lost Onchain recovery phrase.

5. Plus Wallet
Plus Wallet is described by its company as non-custodial and has mobile listings for iOS and Android. The current App Store listing uses the name “Cold Wallet: Crypto Wallet App”, so verify the developer and app identifier before installing. A similar-looking name in an app store is not enough evidence that you have found the intended product.
The available official recovery guidance uses Recover Wallet, followed by entry of a 12- or 24-word seed phrase. That is consistent with the basic recovery model of a self-custody wallet: the phrase is essential, and the provider cannot be assumed to reconstruct it.

However, current official documentation does not provide a reliable, consolidated network matrix, current fee schedule, or definitive path for adding networks comparable to the documentation available for the other wallets in this comparison. Older promotional articles may quote chain counts or fee percentages, but those figures should not be treated as verified current facts.
Good fit: users who have independently tested the current app and confirmed that it supports their specific assets and networks. It is not the strongest choice for a research-based recommendation when network and fee information cannot be verified in advance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fees: the wallet is only part of the cost
For an ordinary on-chain transfer, the blockchain charges a network fee regardless of which self-custody wallet you use. A wallet or swap provider may also add a service charge, routing fee, spread, or other cost. The relevant amount should be checked on the final confirmation screen.
| Transaction | Cost to check | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Sending an asset | Network fee and required gas token | Holding the token but not the network’s gas asset |
| Swapping | Network fee plus spread, routing, or service charge | Comparing only the advertised swap rate |
| Buying with fiat | Provider, card, bank, or regional payment fees | Assuming availability is identical in every country |
| Moving between Coinbase.com and Base | On-chain transfer fee and the displayed transaction terms | Assuming an account link makes the transfer internal or free |
Gas is a frequent source of failed transactions. Sending an ERC-20 token normally requires ETH on the same Ethereum network. A token on another EVM chain requires that chain’s gas asset. Always confirm the network before funding the wallet for a transfer.

How to choose among the five
- List the exact assets and networks you use. “Bitcoin,” “USDT,” or “USDC” is not specific enough. Record the network as well as the ticker.
- Decide whether you need a browser extension. MetaMask, Trust Wallet, and Crypto.com Onchain offer browser options, while Plus Wallet’s verified current offering is mobile-focused. Base also has a browser extension.
- Separate exchange convenience from custody. Coinbase.com and the Crypto.com App can be convenient for trading, but they are not interchangeable with Base or Onchain.
- Test with a small amount first. Send a modest transaction, confirm the address and network, and wait for settlement before moving a larger balance.
- Plan recovery before depositing money. Store the recovery phrase offline, never share it with support, and do not photograph or paste it into cloud services.
- Consider a hardware wallet for significant balances. A browser wallet is convenient, but keeping a large long-term balance in a hot wallet increases the consequences of malware, phishing, and a compromised device.
Which wallet is best for which user?
| User profile | Most defensible starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Already uses Coinbase | Base app, checking Legacy mode where necessary | Convenient ecosystem connection, but asset support must be verified |
| Broad mobile multi-chain use | Trust Wallet | Mobile apps and broad advertised network coverage |
| DeFi and browser dApps | MetaMask | Strong extension workflow and custom EVM network controls |
| Uses Crypto.com and wants self-custody | Crypto.com Onchain | Designed as the separate self-custody wallet in that ecosystem |
| Considering Plus Wallet | Only after direct verification | Current official network and fee information is not consolidated enough for a blanket recommendation |
FAQ
Is Coinbase Wallet still a separate wallet?
Coinbase’s current self-custody experience is presented as the Base app. The former Coinbase Wallet experience is available through Legacy mode, which can be switched from the profile photo and sidebar using the Base mode switcher.
Are Crypto.com Onchain and the Crypto.com App the same?
No. Crypto.com Onchain is self-custody, while the Crypto.com App is custodial. They have different recovery, custody, and transaction implications.
Which wallet has the lowest fees?
There is no universal lowest-fee wallet. The blockchain network fee applies to on-chain transfers, while swaps and purchases may add provider, routing, spread, or payment fees. Compare the final quoted amount for the exact network and transaction.
What happens if I lose my recovery phrase?
With self-custody wallets, losing the recovery phrase can permanently prevent access. Trust Wallet and Crypto.com state that they cannot recover a lost phrase, so store it offline and never share it with anyone claiming to provide support.
The Bottom Line
For most readers, the practical choice is determined by the networks they actually use. MetaMask is the strongest starting point for browser dApps and EVM network control; Trust Wallet is a sensible mobile multi-chain option; Base is the natural self-custody choice for Coinbase users; and Crypto.com Onchain fits users who understand the difference between it and the Crypto.com App. Plus Wallet should be treated as a product to verify directly, not one to recommend on unconfirmed chain counts or fee claims.
Whichever wallet you choose, confirm the exact network, keep the required gas token available, test with a small transfer, and protect the recovery phrase offline. Those precautions matter more than a long supported-coin list.
