Short answer: choose CSPM when your main problem is cloud misconfiguration, compliance exposure, and weak posture. Choose CWPP when you need to secure workloads such as virtual machines, containers, Kubernetes, or serverless functions, including runtime behavior. Evaluate a CNAPP when you need those protections connected with identity, development-pipeline checks, and broader cloud-application context. The labels overlap, so validate the exact capabilities, cloud coverage, integrations, and workload support in every product rather than buying by acronym alone.
What is the difference between CNAPP, CSPM, and CWPP?
CSPM, CWPP, and CNAPP describe related capability areas, not three mutually exclusive product types. CSPM looks primarily at the security posture of cloud resources; CWPP protects the workloads running those resources; CNAPP is a broader platform approach intended to align visibility and protections across several cloud-application security functions.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) defines CNAPP as “Capabilities that help align the visibility and security protections for deployed cloud applications.” The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) frames CSPM around four functions: resource visibility, misconfiguration detection, risk prioritisation, and remediation. Those definitions explain why a CNAPP can contain CSPM and CWPP capabilities without making the terms interchangeable.
For the source definitions, see CISA’s TIC 3.0 Cloud Use Case, the UK NCSC’s CSPM framework, and the Cloud Native Computing Foundation’s acronym guide.

How does CSPM work, and when do you need it?
CSPM continuously examines cloud and multicloud environments for configuration weaknesses and compliance problems. It is the best fit when security teams cannot reliably answer what resources exist, whether they are configured according to policy, which findings matter most, and who will fix them.
1. Build resource visibility
A CSPM implementation starts by discovering cloud resources and their relationships across the accounts, subscriptions, projects, regions, and environments you operate. Confirm that the product can see every provider and account you need, including any hybrid environment that must be governed alongside public-cloud resources. A blind spot in inventory produces a blind spot in every later control.
2. Detect misconfiguration and compliance exposure
Policies inspect settings that can create avoidable exposure or violate an internal or regulatory requirement. Ask how policies are authored, updated, tested, and mapped to the compliance obligations your organization actually uses. A long policy catalog is less useful than checks that cover your architecture and explain the affected resource clearly.
3. Prioritize risk in context
NCSC treats risk prioritization as a core CSPM function, not an optional dashboard feature. During evaluation, ask whether the tool can distinguish an internet-facing, identity-sensitive, production resource from a similarly configured but isolated test asset. The vendor should explain what context is used to rank findings and how analysts can change priorities when business impact differs.
4. Support remediation
Detection without a workable fix process leaves the organization with another alert queue. Check whether a finding includes the affected resource, the policy rationale, the corrective action, an owner, and a way to track closure. Remediation may involve a guided change, an approved automation, or a ticket in an existing cloud-operations process; the important question is whether the handoff is actionable and auditable.
CSPM does not, by its category definition, replace workload protection. A clean configuration view cannot by itself provide the host hardening, runtime behavior monitoring, integrity checks, or application allow lists associated with CWPP.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat does CWPP protect?
CWPP focuses on the workload layer: the virtual machines, containers, Kubernetes workloads, and serverless functions that run applications. It addresses vulnerabilities and behavior inside those workloads rather than only the cloud-control-plane settings around them.

Workload types to map
- Virtual machines: verify operating-system coverage, hardening controls, vulnerability assessment, and runtime monitoring.
- Containers: check image and running-container visibility, workload isolation, and how findings follow a container through deployment.
- Kubernetes: confirm cluster, node, workload, and policy coverage rather than assuming generic container support is sufficient.
- Serverless functions: ask how the product observes functions and dependencies when there is no traditional host to install controls on.
- Hybrid or on-premises workloads: establish whether the same protection and investigation workflow applies outside the public cloud.
Capabilities commonly associated with CWPP
CISA and Microsoft describe examples that include system hardening, vulnerability management, host-based segmentation, system-integrity monitoring, and application allow lists. These capabilities address different failure modes: reducing exploitable weaknesses, limiting lateral movement, detecting unauthorized changes, and restricting what software may execute.
Runtime coverage is a key distinction. Ask to see how a product turns behavior signals into an investigation, what telemetry is available for each workload type, and how an analyst can move from an alert to the affected process, image, function, or host. Also ask whether protection remains available when workloads are short-lived or scale rapidly.
Microsoft’s overview of the category lists workload support and deployment choices among the issues buyers should examine: What is a CWPP? Treat those points as evaluation prompts, then require product-specific evidence for your estate.

What does CNAPP add beyond CSPM and CWPP?
CNAPP is intended to connect several security views that are often operated separately. Depending on the vendor, a CNAPP may combine posture management, workload protection, identity and entitlement management, development-pipeline checks, data controls, and Kubernetes security.
One context across the application lifecycle
A configuration finding is more useful when it can be related to the workload, identity, code or image, and deployment path involved. Likewise, a vulnerable workload is easier to prioritize when the platform can show its cloud exposure and effective permissions. CNAPP’s value proposition is this shared context and a common operating model, not simply a larger feature list.
Why the CNAPP label is not a specification
There is no single mandatory CNAPP feature set. One product may be strong in CSPM and identity analysis but offer limited runtime protection; another may provide deep Kubernetes controls but shallow development integration. Read the capability matrix, confirm what is native versus integrated, and test the depth of each function on representative workloads.
Microsoft’s current explanation highlights hybrid and multicloud support, DevSecOps integration, Kubernetes protection, software-supply-chain security, agent-based versus agentless approaches, and total cost of ownership as CNAPP evaluation factors. Its guidance is useful as a checklist, not as independent proof that every CNAPP handles those areas equally: What is a CNAPP?

Do you need CNAPP or just CSPM?
Start with the security gap you must close, then decide whether a broader platform reduces operational friction enough to justify its scope. A single acronym should not determine the purchase.
| Your immediate problem | Most relevant starting point | Questions that decide the next step |
|---|---|---|
| Unknown resources, insecure cloud settings, or compliance findings | CSPM | Can it inventory every required environment, prioritize risk, and route remediation to the team that owns the resource? |
| Vulnerable hosts, container images, Kubernetes workloads, or suspicious runtime behavior | CWPP | Does it protect each workload type you run, and does it provide usable runtime and vulnerability evidence? |
| Separate tools produce disconnected findings across posture, identity, development, and runtime | CNAPP evaluation | Are the desired capabilities genuinely integrated, or merely displayed in one console with separate data and workflows? |
| Existing tools already work but leave a narrow, documented gap | Targeted capability or integration | Would adding a platform duplicate controls, increase alert volume, or improve prioritization and remediation enough to warrant the change? |
A CNAPP can be sensible when correlation and lifecycle coverage are the main goals. It can be excessive when the organization needs only a well-defined posture-control function and already has effective workload and identity processes. Conversely, buying CSPM alone will not address a requirement for workload runtime protection.
How should you compare cloud security tools?
Use the same questions for every candidate and record the answers by environment, workload type, and workflow. The following axes capture the practical differences that most often determine whether a deployment works after the contract is signed.
| Decision axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Coverage | Which cloud providers, accounts, regions, and hybrid environments are supported? Are there limits by service, tenant, or geography? |
| Workloads | Does protection cover your virtual machines, containers, Kubernetes clusters, and serverless functions? What changes for short-lived or hybrid workloads? |
| Capability depth | Are configuration checks, vulnerability management, runtime signals, identity and entitlement context, data controls, and development scanning included? How deeply are they implemented? |
| Workflow fit | Can developers and security teams use findings in existing CI/CD and cloud-operations workflows? Can ownership and remediation status be carried through to closure? |
| Deployment model | What visibility and operational burden come with agent-based and agentless collection? Which controls require a component on the workload? |
| Prioritization and remediation | Can the platform rank risks in context and support an actionable remediation process rather than only listing findings? |
| Cost and overhead | What are the licensing, maintenance, integration, data-retention, and alert-management costs? What administration is required as coverage expands? |
Ask for demonstrations using your own architecture diagrams, sample policies, representative images, Kubernetes manifests, and deployment pipelines. A generic presentation can confirm that a feature exists; it cannot show whether the feature has the depth, integrations, or performance your teams need.

What are the trade-offs between agent-based and agentless collection?
The correct choice depends on the visibility you require and the operational burden your teams can sustain. Compare the two approaches for each workload class instead of selecting one as a universal rule.
Questions for agent-based designs
- Which hosts, nodes, or workload components require installation?
- What permissions, upgrades, and lifecycle management does the component need?
- What runtime signals or enforcement controls become available only with an agent?
- How are ephemeral workloads and autoscaling handled?
Questions for agentless designs
- What cloud APIs, snapshots, logs, or configuration sources provide visibility?
- Which runtime or deep workload signals are unavailable without a component?
- How quickly do changes appear, and how are short-lived resources represented?
- What permissions must the collection service hold across accounts and providers?
Record the answers by workload and control. A platform can be agentless for one capability and require an agent for another, so the headline deployment model may hide important exceptions.
How do CNAPP, CSPM, and CWPP fit into development and operations?
Map controls to the points where risk is introduced, deployed, and observed. CSPM primarily governs the cloud environment; CWPP concentrates on running workloads; CNAPP may connect those controls with development and deployment checks.

During development
Ask whether the platform can inspect infrastructure definitions, images, dependencies, or other pipeline inputs before deployment, and whether developers receive findings in the tools they already use. Do not assume that a product marketed as CNAPP includes every development check; verify the exact integrations and supported artifacts.

Establish what happens when a policy violation, vulnerable image, excessive entitlement, or unsupported configuration is detected. The organization should define whether the result is a warning, a ticket, an approval requirement, or an automated block, and who is authorized to override it.
At runtime
CWPP capabilities become central once workloads are operating. Confirm how runtime signals, posture findings, and identity context are correlated, how investigations are assigned, and how evidence is retained for incident response and remediation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should be in a CNAPP, CSPM, or CWPP proof-of-concept?
A useful proof-of-concept tests your highest-risk paths rather than every feature in a vendor’s catalog. Use a written script so each candidate faces the same conditions.
- Define the estate: list cloud providers, accounts, regions, hybrid systems, virtual machines, containers, Kubernetes clusters, and serverless functions that must be covered.
- Choose representative cases: include a known misconfiguration, a vulnerable workload, an identity or entitlement concern, a development-pipeline check, and a runtime investigation scenario where those cases apply.
- Trace each finding: follow it from discovery through prioritization, assignment, remediation, verification, and closure. Record which teams and systems must be involved.
- Test lifecycle changes: add and remove a resource, redeploy a workload, rotate an identity, and change a policy. Observe how quickly the platform reflects each change.
- Measure operational effort: document permissions, agents, integrations, tuning, alert handling, and administration required to keep coverage healthy.
- Review boundaries: identify unsupported services, workload types, regions, data sources, and controls that require separate products or manual work.
Require written answers for every exception. A platform that passes a demonstration but leaves an important environment outside its collection boundary can create a false sense of coverage.
What mistakes should buyers avoid?
Treating the acronyms as mutually exclusive products
CSPM and CWPP can be purchased as separate capability areas and can also appear inside a CNAPP. Decide whether consolidation, depth, integration, or a combination of those goals matters most.
Assuming every CNAPP is equivalent
CNAPP scope varies by vendor. Confirm the actual inclusion and maturity of posture, identity, workload, data, Kubernetes, and development functions instead of accepting a category label as proof.

Ignoring the real workload estate
A CWPP evaluation that covers only virtual machines may miss container, Kubernetes, serverless, or hybrid requirements. Match the test plan to the workloads that carry business risk.
Counting dashboards instead of outcomes
More findings do not automatically mean better security. Evaluate whether the platform identifies the responsible owner, explains business context, supports remediation, and verifies that the risk is closed.
Underestimating integration and total cost of ownership
Licensing is only one part of the decision. Include maintenance, permissions, agents, data handling, integrations, policy tuning, and the staff time needed to manage alerts and exceptions.
Buying a broad platform without an operating model
Before deployment, assign responsibility for policy ownership, triage, remediation, exceptions, and escalation. Without those decisions, a consolidated console can simply centralize unresolved findings.
How do you choose a practical starting point?
Use the narrowest capability that closes the highest-priority gap, then expand when evidence shows that another layer or better correlation is needed.
- Document the gap: state whether the primary issue is visibility, misconfiguration, workload vulnerability, runtime behavior, identity context, development controls, or disconnected workflows.
- Map dependencies: identify the cloud providers, accounts, regions, workload types, pipelines, and operations systems involved.
- Select the capability family: begin with CSPM for posture, CWPP for workload protection, or a CNAPP evaluation for cross-function and lifecycle correlation.
- Set acceptance criteria: define the coverage, prioritization, remediation, integration, deployment, and cost answers that must be demonstrated.
- Pilot on representative systems: test production-like configurations and workloads, including at least one known issue and one normal baseline.
- Decide on consolidation deliberately: compare the operational savings and improved context of a platform against duplicated controls, migration effort, and any remaining gaps.
This approach keeps the buying decision tied to measurable security work: seeing the environment, understanding the risk, protecting the workload, and getting the issue fixed.

Can CSPM and CWPP come from different vendors?
Yes. The categories describe capabilities, so an organization can operate separate tools when each provides the required depth. Before choosing that model, verify whether findings, ownership, and remediation status can move cleanly between the systems your teams already use.
Does a CNAPP automatically include identity and entitlement management?
No. Identity and entitlement controls are common elements of CNAPP offerings, but inclusion and depth vary. Ask for a feature-level description of permission analysis, context linking, and remediation rather than assuming the acronym guarantees those functions.
How can a small security team keep a broad platform manageable?
Start with a limited set of high-impact policies and workload types, assign clear owners, and expand coverage after the remediation workflow is stable. A smaller, well-maintained scope is more useful than enabling every check and creating an untriaged queue.
What evidence should a vendor provide about cloud and hybrid coverage?
Request a support matrix that names providers, account or subscription models, regions, and hybrid or on-premises systems. Have the vendor demonstrate discovery and change detection in each environment you consider in scope, including resources that are short-lived or outside the primary cloud.
