Claude API costs are based on the model you use and the number of input and output tokens it processes; optional features such as prompt caching and Batch API processing change the rates. As of October 25, 2026, Anthropic’s live price table lists examples ranging from $0.10 per million input tokens for qualifying Claude Haiku 5.5 prompts to $10 per million input tokens for Claude Fable 5.1. Those are list-price examples, not a quote for your workload: estimate with your model, prompt, output, and deployment scope, then compare the forecast with actual usage.

How much does the Claude API cost?

There is no single Claude API price. Anthropic lists separate input and output rates for each model, generally in US dollars per million tokens (MTok). Prompt-cache writes and reads have their own rates, and eligible Batch API work receives a stated discount. Prices and model availability can change, so use the live Anthropic pricing table for a current estimate.

The following rates were listed on Anthropic’s live pricing page when checked on October 25, 2026. They are examples of standard list prices, not a promise that a particular account, feature, geography, or request will be charged at these exact rates.

Model Input price Output price Qualification
Claude Fable 5.1 $10 per MTok $50 per MTok Live-page example; verify the current model-specific terms.
Claude Opus 5.5 $4 per MTok $20 per MTok Live-page example; verify the current model-specific terms.
Claude Sonnet 5.5 $2 per MTok $10 per MTok Live-page example; verify the current model-specific terms.
Claude Haiku 5.5 $0.10 per MTok for prompts up to 100,000 tokens $0.50 per MTok Prompts over 100,000 tokens incur the higher schedule; see the long-prompt section.

For a simple illustration, 100,000 input tokens at $2 per MTok cost $0.20 before any applicable feature pricing: 100,000 divided by 1,000,000, multiplied by $2. Another 10,000 output tokens at $10 per MTok cost $0.10. These amounts illustrate the arithmetic using the Sonnet 5.5 example rates above; they are not an estimate for every model or a complete calculation where caching, batching, or other pricing rules apply.

Why input and output prices differ

Input tokens are the material the model receives, such as instructions, conversation history, and supplied content. Output tokens are the material it generates. Because the two directions can have different rates, a useful estimate needs separate input and output counts rather than one combined token total.

Geography can affect a listed rate

Anthropic’s dated list-price schedule effective May 27, 2026, provides an example of a scope distinction: standard global Claude API pricing for Claude Opus 4.8 was listed at $5 per MTok input and $25 per MTok output, while US-only inference was listed at $5.50 and $27.50. This dated schedule is not a substitute for the live table; it shows why an estimate should identify model and inference scope, not just a model name.

How are Claude API tokens billed?

A token is a model-specific unit of text or other content processed by the API; it is not a fixed number of words or characters across all requests. The bill depends on the tokens actually used and the applicable rate for each category, so token counting and usage records are more reliable than estimating from a generic word-to-token conversion.

Estimate the input and output separately

  1. Choose the exact model and deployment scope. Record the model ID and whether your request must use a particular inference geography, then consult the current price table for its input and output rates.
  2. Count representative input with that model. Anthropic says counts vary by tokenizer, language, and content type. Use its token-counting facility with the target model rather than relying on a general words-to-tokens rule.
  3. Set an output estimate independently. Base this on what the task is expected to generate, not on the length of the prompt. For planning, use a realistic range if outputs vary substantially.
  4. Apply the relevant feature rates. Account for cache writes and reads, Batch API pricing, or geography-specific rates when those features apply. Check the live pricing rules for how the applicable modifiers combine.
  5. Multiply by expected request volume. Sum the estimated costs across the input, output, and applicable feature categories, then compare the forecast with recorded usage in the Claude Console.

Actual billed usage is the useful reference for refining a forecast: real requests may contain different prompt lengths, outputs, or feature use than the representative sample. The token-counting facility helps estimate a request, but usage records are where you should check what was actually billed.

Does a larger context window cost more?

A context window is the amount of content a model can handle in a request context; its size is not itself a flat charge. You pay according to applicable token and feature pricing, while some models have additional rules for especially long prompts.

Anthropic’s current pricing page says Claude 4.6 and later models, except Claude Haiku 5.5, and Claude Mythos Preview include the full 1-million-token context window at standard pricing. The page also says standard prompt-cache and Batch API discounts apply across that window. Check the live model entry before planning: model availability and pricing rules can change.

Haiku 5.5 has a prompt-length threshold

For Claude Haiku 5.5, Anthropic’s live pricing page states that prompts over 100,000 tokens incur a higher schedule. The prompt-length calculation includes cache reads and cache writes, and each request is priced independently. A long conversation or reused context can therefore matter to the threshold even when some of its material is cached.

Do not assume that a threshold described for one model applies to another. In particular, older indexed pricing guidance describing a Sonnet 4-only 200,000-token threshold and beta qualification is superseded for current guidance by the live model-specific pricing rules.

How does prompt caching change the price?

Prompt caching reuses previously processed prompt material, which can reduce the cost and latency of requests that repeatedly include stable context. It adds distinct cache-write and cache-read charges, however, so it is most worth evaluating when the same material is reused often enough within the cache duration.

Anthropic’s current pricing page lists a 5-minute cache write at 1.25 times the base input price and a 1-hour write at 2 times the base input price. Reads use a reduced multiplier, with special lower read multipliers for certain newer models. Exact model rates and cache-validity rules are model-specific; consult the live table rather than applying one read rate to every model.

When to test caching

  • Good candidate: repeated requests include the same long instructions, reference material, or other stable prompt content.
  • Less compelling candidate: requests rarely repeat their context, or the material changes before it can be reused.
  • What to compare: the extra write cost against the reads and reuse you expect during the cache lifetime, using the applicable model’s write and read prices.

There is no universal savings percentage that applies to every workload. Anthropic describes a break-even pattern for standard multipliers on its current pricing page, but model exceptions and the amount of reuse affect the result. Caching can also interact with modifiers such as batch processing and data residency, so check the current rules before treating the simple multiplier as your final rate.

Can Batch API processing lower Claude API costs?

Yes, for eligible work that can run asynchronously. Anthropic says, “The Batch API allows asynchronous processing of large volumes of requests with a 50% discount on both input and output tokens.” It is a cost-control option for workloads that can tolerate batch latency, not a blanket discount for interactive calls.

The precise batch rate varies by model and may interact with cache and geography modifiers. If you are deciding whether to use it, first separate work that needs an immediate response from work that can be queued; estimate the latter using the current model and feature prices. Do not apply the 50% figure to a request category or modifier without checking Anthropic’s current terms for how they combine.

How can I reduce Claude API costs without guessing?

Start with the task and the usage pattern, not a universal “cheapest model” ranking. A lower per-token price does not by itself establish that a model is the right choice: capability, output volume, context needs, reuse, latency, and inference scope all affect the useful cost comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a workload-based decision checklist

  • Match model to task difficulty. Anthropic recommends selecting a model appropriate to the task. Compare the model’s price with the quality and capability your application requires, rather than selecting on input price alone.
  • Keep prompts purposeful. Count representative inputs and examine which context the task actually needs. Token totals depend on content and tokenizer, so measure a real sample with the intended model.
  • Reuse stable context where it makes sense. Evaluate prompt caching for recurring material, comparing write and read charges against expected reuse.
  • Batch work that need not be immediate. Asynchronous processing may qualify for the stated token discount, but it is unsuitable when an interactive response is required.
  • Include geography and feature requirements. A deployment or data-residency requirement can alter the applicable price; identify it before comparing model rates.
  • Forecast, then monitor. Estimate using actual input/output patterns and expected volume, and compare the result with Claude Console usage. Revise the model choice, reusable prompt structure, or batching strategy based on observed usage.

Build a monthly estimate

For each request type, estimate input tokens and output tokens separately, multiply each by the applicable per-token rate, and scale by the number of expected requests. Add cache writes and reads or batch pricing only for requests that use those features, and use the applicable rates rather than folding every request into one average.

For example, a service with one short request type and one long-context request type should forecast those groups separately. If the second group uses cached material or crosses a model-specific prompt threshold, averaging both groups into one token count can hide the driver of cost. Keep the assumptions alongside the estimate: model ID, rate date, geography, request mix, expected volume, and whether output length is measured or assumed.

What affects billing beyond the per-token price?

Payment arrangements and operational limits matter to running an API account, but they are distinct from the model’s unit-price table. Anthropic Help Center guidance says most organizations use prepaid API credits, while organizations with invoicing arrangements are billed monthly. Verify current account terms because credit and billing policies can change.

The Help Center also says successful API calls and completed tasks are billed. A client disconnect or timeout may still be charged if the request was on track to succeed, so a timeout should not automatically be treated as proof that no billable work occurred. Check usage records when investigating unexpected charges.

Rate limits vary by usage tier; Anthropic says custom rates or limits may be available by arrangement. Use account-specific rate-limit documentation for planning capacity rather than relying on a generic threshold. A rate limit controls how much or how quickly you can send, whereas the pricing table determines unit charges.

How should I compare two Claude API options?

Compare options using the same representative workload and all the requirements that affect price. A table of input rates alone can mislead when models differ in output rate, long-prompt treatment, caching economics, batch eligibility, or inference scope.

Comparison question What to record
What model and price apply? Model ID, current input and output rates, and the date you checked the price table.
What does the workload consume? Representative input counts, expected output counts, and request volume, counted or estimated for the chosen model.
Are long prompts treated differently? The model’s context window and any prompt-length pricing threshold or exception.
Will caching help? Cache write duration and multiplier, read terms, and expected reuse during the cache lifetime.
Can work be asynchronous? Whether it qualifies for Batch API processing and whether the latency trade-off is acceptable.
Does deployment scope constrain the choice? Required inference geography or data-residency terms and the rate applicable to that scope.

Choose by the estimated cost and suitability of your actual workload. The lowest listed input rate is not necessarily the lowest-cost choice for a task that produces substantial output, needs a particular capability, or must meet a deployment requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Claude API credits expire?

The cited billing guidance establishes that most organizations use prepaid API credits, but it does not state a general credit-expiration rule. Check the terms shown for your organization in the Claude Console or confirm them with Anthropic before budgeting credits as long-term funds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will I be charged if my API request times out?

Possibly. Anthropic’s Help Center says a client disconnect or timeout can still be charged when the request was on track to succeed, so inspect usage records instead of assuming a timeout means the call was free.

Where can I see what my Claude API calls actually used?

Anthropic recommends monitoring usage patterns in the Claude Console. Compare those records with the model and feature assumptions in your forecast to identify whether input, output, or a pricing modifier is driving the difference.

Are Claude API rate limits the same as API prices?

No. Rates determine charges for usage, while rate limits constrain request throughput or capacity and vary by usage tier. Anthropic says account-specific or custom limits may be available by arrangement.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
