Claiming Social Security at 62, Full Retirement Age, or 70: How the Options Compare

Claiming at 62 gives you the earliest ordinary retirement payments but the smallest monthly worker benefit. Claiming at your full retirement age (FRA) provides the unreduced amount for your birth cohort. Waiting beyond FRA raises the monthly benefit through age 70, when delayed-retirement credits stop. The best choice depends on your exact FRA, earnings record, health and longevity expectations, need for income, continued work, and spouse or survivor benefits. No single claiming age is right for every household.

Use your personal Social Security estimates to compare the monthly amount at 62, FRA, and 70. Then test how each choice affects cumulative payments, taxes and cash flow, family benefits, and Medicare planning.

62 A permanent reduction applies for each month claimed before FRA. For people whose FRA is 67, the reduction can be as much as 30% for a claim at 62. Payments begin sooner and may continue for more years, but every monthly check is smaller. Your birth-year FRA, exact claiming month, earnings before FRA, and any earnings-test withholding.
FRA You receive the unreduced retirement benefit for your birth cohort. You get the full scheduled monthly amount without waiting to 70, but you give up checks you could have collected earlier. Your personal FRA and estimate. FRA is separate from Medicare eligibility at 65.
70 Delayed-retirement credits increase the worker benefit for each eligible month after FRA and stop at 70. For workers born in 1943 or later, the Social Security Administration’s 2025 Annual Statistical Supplement describes an 8% credit per year. The eventual monthly check is highest, but you must fund the waiting period with work, savings, or other income. Your cohort’s credit rate, the number of months delayed, health and longevity assumptions, and spouse or survivor effects.

The comparison is not just about the largest check. Evaluate monthly income, total payments under a stated lifespan assumption, the cost of waiting, investment or withdrawal needs, continued earnings, household benefits, and Medicare enrollment.

How full retirement age and early reductions work

FRA is set by birth year

Full retirement age is not automatically 67. It depends on your birth year. Social Security Administration guidance says FRA is 67 for people attaining age 62 in 2026. Other birth cohorts have different FRA schedules, so use your own official estimate rather than applying 67 universally.

Early claims are reduced by month

Retirement benefits may start at 62. Social Security reduces the worker benefit for each month between the claim date and FRA. The reduction is tied to the number of months early, so claiming at 63, 64, or 66 generally produces a different amount than claiming at 62. For people born in 1960 or later whose FRA is 67, the maximum age-62 reduction is up to 30% compared with the FRA amount. That figure is a cohort-specific example, not a universal reduction.

The early-claim adjustment is permanent in the sense that the scheduled monthly retirement amount is set lower for the early start. Earnings-test rules can later result in benefit recalculations when months of benefits were withheld, so a withheld check is not necessarily a permanent loss.

Delaying raises the check only through 70

After FRA, a worker earns delayed-retirement credits for eligible months through age 70. The cited 8% per-year figure applies to workers born in 1943 or later under the 2025 Annual Statistical Supplement; the precise increase for an individual depends on cohort and months delayed. There is no additional delayed-credit increase after 70. Waiting past 70 therefore does not increase the worker retirement benefit under these credits.

What claiming at 62 means

Advantages

  • Immediate income: You can begin the ordinary worker retirement benefit at the earliest available age.
  • More potential checks: If you live for many years, an early claim provides payments during years in which a delayed claimant receives none.
  • Less pressure on other resources: Benefits can help cover essential spending when work is no longer possible or desirable.

Costs and risks

  • Smaller monthly amount: The reduction applies to the worker benefit because you are claiming months before FRA.
  • Longevity risk: A lower check continues for life, so the reduction matters most if you reach advanced ages.
  • Work complications: Earnings before FRA can trigger the retirement earnings test and temporary withholding.
  • Household effects: A lower worker benefit can also mean a lower future survivor benefit for a spouse, depending on the household’s claiming pattern.

Claiming at 62 can be reasonable when current income is needed, health or longevity expectations are poor, work is ending, or other household resources make a smaller lifelong benefit acceptable. It is not automatically advantageous merely because it produces more early checks.

What claiming at full retirement age means

The unreduced cohort benefit

At FRA, you receive the unreduced worker retirement amount for your birth cohort. This middle option avoids the early-claim reduction without requiring you to finance a wait until 70.

Why FRA can fit a cash-flow plan

Claiming at FRA may suit someone who can cover expenses until that date but does not want to draw down savings for several more years. It also removes the retirement earnings test once the FRA month begins: earnings are not subject to that test starting with the month you reach FRA.

FRA is a Social Security milestone, not a requirement to stop working. Social Security’s guidance notes that the age you start benefits and the age you stop working are often different. You can keep working after claiming, subject to the rules that apply to your situation, and continued earnings may improve your benefit if they replace lower years in your record.

What claiming at 70 means

The largest worker check

Delaying from FRA to 70 produces the highest monthly worker retirement benefit available through delayed-retirement credits. For eligible workers born in 1943 or later, the published annual credit is 8%; an exact personal increase depends on the number of delayed months and applicable cohort rules.

The price of waiting

During the delay you receive no worker retirement checks. You may need employment income, savings, a pension, or another benefit to cover expenses. Those forgone payments are the economic cost of waiting, and they must be weighed against the larger checks received later.

Waiting can be especially valuable when you expect a long retirement, want to maximize inflation-adjusted lifetime income from Social Security, or are the higher earner in a couple and want to increase the survivor benefit that may remain for a spouse. Those outcomes are household-specific; a larger worker check does not by itself prove that 70 is optimal.

How to compare lifetime cash flow without relying on a “magic” break-even age

A break-even calculation asks when the cumulative payments from a later claim catch up with the payments from an earlier claim. The result changes with your estimates, claiming months, taxes, investment returns on money not spent, inflation treatment, lifespan, and household benefits. It is an illustration, not a guaranteed recommendation.

Use a consistent comparison

  1. Record the official monthly estimates for claiming at 62, your FRA, and 70.
  2. Choose explicit lifespan assumptions, such as surviving to several different ages rather than relying on one forecast.
  3. For each age, total the checks received from the claim date through each assumed age.
  4. Show the cash needed to bridge the waiting period for the FRA and 70 options, including withdrawals or lost earnings.
  5. Run a household version that includes a spouse’s own benefit, potential spousal benefits, and survivor benefits.
  6. Review how work, taxes, health insurance, and investment withdrawals alter the result.

Do not describe one calculated crossover age as the answer for everyone. A person who values guaranteed income at very old ages may prefer the larger 70 benefit even if the cumulative totals cross later than expected; someone who cannot meet current expenses may rationally claim earlier.

Working while receiving Social Security

2026 earnings-test limits

If you receive retirement benefits before FRA and continue working, the retirement earnings test may withhold benefits above an annual limit. The Social Security Administration’s FAQ updated January 2, 2026, lists these 2026 amounts:

Situation in 2026 Annual earnings limit How to read it
Under FRA for the entire year $24,480 Earnings above this limit can cause benefits to be withheld under the earnings test.
Year you reach FRA, for earnings before the FRA month $65,160 The higher limit applies only to earnings before the month you reach FRA.
Starting with the FRA month No earnings-test reduction Earnings are not reduced under this test once the FRA month begins.

These are 2026 figures and must not be carried forward to later years without checking the current limit. The test concerns work earnings, not investment income, pensions, or every form of household income.

Withholding is not necessarily a permanent loss

Social Security describes a special first-year monthly rule and later recalculation of benefits for months affected by withholding. When evaluating an early claim while working, ask how many checks would actually be paid and how the agency would adjust the benefit after FRA. Do not treat the earnings test as a tax or as an automatic reason to delay.

Your earnings record can matter as much as your claiming age

The 35-year formula

Social Security bases a worker retirement benefit on the highest 35 years of covered earnings. If you have fewer than 35 years, missing years count as zeros. Low-earning years can also reduce the average used in the calculation.

Continuing to work may replace low years

Claim age and stopping work are separate decisions. Additional covered earnings can replace lower years in the 35-year record and raise the eventual benefit. Before deciding that delaying a claim is pointless because you are already near FRA, check whether another year of work would replace a zero or low year. Conversely, if new earnings would not replace any lower year, the record-related increase may be small even though delaying still earns delayed-retirement credits after FRA.

Spouse, divorced-spouse, and survivor benefits

Deemed filing limits the ability to choose between benefits

People eligible for both their own retirement benefit and a spouse benefit may be subject to deemed filing. The rule’s application depends on birth date and entitlement circumstances, so a person generally cannot assume they can claim a spousal amount while allowing their own retirement benefit to grow.

Survivor benefits follow different filing rules

Deemed filing does not apply to survivor benefits. A surviving spouse may start a survivor benefit independently of their own retirement benefit, subject to the rules for that benefit. This distinction can make the best sequence for a widow or widower different from the sequence for a currently married worker.

Former spouses and couples need individualized estimates

Divorced-spouse eligibility, a current spouse’s benefit, age differences, and the higher earner’s claim date can change household income. Avoid relying on old “file and suspend” or “claim a spousal benefit while your own grows” strategies without confirming that the specific cohort and current rules permit them. Ask Social Security to evaluate the individual record before filing.

Medicare is a separate age-65 task

Delaying Social Security does not postpone Medicare eligibility. Medicare eligibility generally begins at 65, and a person who is not receiving Social Security at 65 may need to apply for Medicare separately. Social Security warns that late Part B enrollment can have consequences; current-employment group health coverage can affect when enrollment is appropriate.

Put Medicare on a separate checklist from the Social Security claiming decision. Confirm enrollment timing, employer coverage, and any applicable special enrollment period before turning 65. Do not assume that waiting for a larger Social Security check automatically handles Medicare enrollment.

A practical decision process

  1. Confirm your FRA. Use your birth year and an official Social Security estimate. Do not assume that every person has an FRA of 67.
  2. Pull three personal estimates. Record the monthly worker benefit at 62, FRA, and 70, including the exact claiming months shown.
  3. Check your earnings record. Look for zeros, low years, or errors. Estimate whether continued work could replace a lower year among the highest 35.
  4. Map income needs. List essential expenses, pensions, savings, employment income, and the amount required to bridge a delay.
  5. Model health and longevity. Use several plausible lifespans and consider family history and current health without treating either as a certainty.
  6. Apply the earnings test. If working before FRA, compare expected earnings with the current annual limit and account for possible withholding and later recalculation.
  7. Analyze household benefits. Include a spouse, former spouse, or survivor entitlement and check deemed-filing rules.
  8. Handle Medicare separately. Set an age-65 enrollment plan even if Social Security will start at 66, 67, 70, or later.
  9. Recheck before filing. Limits, estimates, and personal circumstances can change. Confirm the filing month and payment estimate with Social Security.

How the choice changes in common situations

You need income immediately

If work has ended and savings cannot cover essential expenses, an age-62 claim may be the practical choice despite the lower monthly amount. Compare whether a partial withdrawal, part-time work, or a short delay would materially improve the lifelong benefit without creating a cash shortfall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are healthy, financially flexible, and the higher earner

Waiting to 70 can insure against living a long time with an inadequate guaranteed income and may increase the survivor benefit available to a spouse. The decision still requires enough resources to cover the years without worker checks.

You are still working near FRA

Check both the earnings test and the 35-year record. Before FRA, benefits may be withheld above the applicable limit; after the FRA month, that test no longer reduces benefits. Additional earnings may replace low years, so the best claiming date may differ from the date you stop working.

You are deciding after a spouse’s death

Survivor benefits are not subject to deemed filing in the same way as retirement and spouse benefits. Compare the survivor amount, your own retirement estimate, and the timing options separately rather than applying a married-worker rule.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling 67 everyone’s FRA or treating FRA as the Medicare age.
  • Applying the maximum 30% age-62 reduction to every birth cohort.
  • Assuming the 2026 earnings limits apply in future years.
  • Claiming that delayed credits continue after 70.
  • Calling withheld benefits a tax or a permanent loss without considering later recalculation.
  • Choosing from the monthly amount alone and ignoring forgone checks during a delay.
  • Using a generic break-even age as a personal guarantee.
  • Assuming a spouse strategy still works without checking deemed filing and survivor rules.
  • Confusing the age you claim Social Security with the age you stop working.
  • Waiting for Social Security to start before addressing Medicare at 65.

Bottom line

Age 62 maximizes how soon payments start, FRA provides the unreduced cohort amount, and age 70 maximizes the worker’s monthly check through delayed-retirement credits. Compare all three with your own estimates, cash-flow needs, expected longevity, work plans, earnings record, household benefits, and Medicare timeline. The right answer is the one that fits those facts—not a universal age or a generic break-even calculation.
