Claim Social Security at 62, full retirement age, or 70: Which option pays more over your lifetime?

There is no universal lifetime winner. Claiming at 62 gives you the most years of payments but permanently reduces each check. Claiming at full retirement age (FRA) pays your unreduced primary benefit. Waiting until 70 produces the largest monthly benefit, but you give up payments while you wait. The financially stronger choice depends on how long you live, your health, marital and survivor needs, work plans, taxes, Medicare timing, and whether you can comfortably fund the waiting years.

What changes at 62, full retirement age, and 70?

Social Security retirement benefits can generally start at age 62. Starting before your FRA applies an actuarial reduction that lasts for life. The Social Security Administration says a benefit begun at 62 can be reduced by as much as 30% compared with the FRA amount.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

At FRA, you receive 100% of your primary insurance amount, assuming your earnings record supports that amount. Delaying beyond FRA earns delayed-retirement credits until age 70. For people born in 1943 and later, the credit is 8% for each year of delay after FRA. In the SSA table for people born in 1960 or later, age 67 is 100% of the FRA benefit and age 70 is 124%. Once you reach 70, the monthly retirement benefit stops increasing even if you continue to wait.

Claiming age Monthly-check effect Payment timing Key trade-off
62 Up to 30% below the FRA amount, according to SSA Earliest possible start More years of checks, but a permanently smaller payment
FRA 100% of the primary benefit Starts later than 62 Balances payment size and waiting time
70 124% of the FRA amount for people born in 1960 or later Latest useful start age Largest monthly check, but no payments during the delay

These percentages describe the retirement benefit itself. They do not determine your household’s lifetime outcome without considering longevity, a spouse’s record, survivor benefits, employment, taxes, and health coverage.

How to find your full retirement age

FRA is based on your birth year, not the age at which you stop working. The SSA says the current FRA is 67 for people attaining age 62 in 2026. Because the schedule varies by birth year, use SSA’s FRA information for your specific date of birth rather than assuming that 67 applies to everyone.

FRA also is not a deadline for retirement. You can keep working after FRA, and you can claim Social Security while still employed. Claiming benefits and leaving the workforce are separate decisions.

Why the biggest monthly check may not produce the biggest lifetime total

Starting at 62 creates a long payment runway. Waiting until FRA or 70 means collecting fewer checks at first, but each later check is larger. Lifetime totals therefore depend on the age at which you die and on the amount of each option from your own earnings record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use three estimates from your personal SSA record:

  • A: the monthly estimate at age 62
  • F: the monthly estimate at FRA
  • D: the monthly estimate at age 70

For any possible death age, multiply each monthly amount by the number of months received under that claiming strategy. A person who dies relatively soon after 62 may receive more total dollars by claiming early. A person who lives well into later life may collect more in total by waiting for the larger payment. The age-70 option maximizes the monthly check, not necessarily the lifetime sum.

Calculating a nominal break-even age

A break-even calculation asks when the cumulative payments from a later claim catch up with the payments forgone by waiting. For two options, a simple nominal approximation is:

Break-even age = later claimant’s start age + (earlier option’s foregone benefits ÷ later option’s monthly advantage).

For example, to compare claiming at 62 with claiming at 70, count the 96 months of payments that would have been received between those ages under the age-62 choice. Divide that foregone amount by the monthly difference between the age-70 and age-62 estimates. Add the resulting number of months to age 70. The resulting age is the point at which cumulative, undiscounted checks become equal.

This is an illustration, not a universal answer. It ignores taxes, investment returns on money received earlier, inflation indexing, and survivor benefits. It also assumes the estimates remain valid and that payments are not affected by other program rules. Use your own SSA figures and show the assumptions beside the result.

Longevity and health: the first decision filter

When waiting is more attractive

Delaying is more valuable when you expect a long retirement, have good health prospects, or have family longevity. You are exchanging several years of possible checks for a larger payment that continues for life. The increase also protects against the risk of outliving other assets because it raises guaranteed monthly income.

When an early claim may fit better

A shorter expected lifespan, immediate cash-flow needs, or an inability to cover essential expenses while waiting can favor an earlier start. Health forecasts are uncertain, so treat them as planning inputs rather than precise predictions.

An SSA bulletin reported that, on average, an 8% delayed-retirement credit is fair in present-value terms for average life expectancy. That is an actuarial average, not a promise that every household will break even at the same age.

Marriage and survivor protection can outweigh a single-person calculation

Married couples should compare both earnings records and model what happens after the first spouse dies. A higher earner’s claiming age can materially change the surviving spouse’s future income because the survivor may receive a benefit tied to the higher worker’s record. Waiting by the higher earner can therefore provide a form of survivor-income insurance, especially when the survivor is expected to rely on that check for essential expenses.

Run separate scenarios for each spouse: claim at 62, at the applicable FRA, and at 70 where practical. Include the survivor period, not just the years when both spouses are alive. SSA provides spouse-benefit tools that can help identify which record and claiming age produce the relevant household outcomes.

Working while claiming: earnings-test and record effects

Before full retirement age

If you claim before FRA and continue working, earnings above the annual Social Security limit can cause SSA to withhold some benefits. The applicable limit and withholding formula change over time, so check the current SSA rules for the year in which you work and claim.

After full retirement age

Once you reach FRA, the earnings test no longer reduces benefits because of wages. SSA recalculates your benefit to account for months in which benefits were withheld before FRA.

Why additional work can raise the eventual benefit

Social Security’s retirement calculation uses your highest 35 years of indexed earnings. Continuing to work can replace a low- or zero-earnings year with a higher year, increasing the underlying benefit estimate. That increase is separate from the claiming-age adjustment, so check both effects in your personal record.

Medicare at 65 is a separate deadline

Delaying Social Security does not automatically delay Medicare obligations. SSA says people who are not receiving Social Security at 65 generally need to apply for Original Medicare themselves. Depending on your other qualifying coverage, postponing Part B can create a late-enrollment penalty and a coverage gap.

If you plan to wait for Social Security, put Medicare on a separate checklist: confirm your initial enrollment period, determine whether employer coverage qualifies for a special enrollment period, and verify when premiums and coverage begin. A decision to delay retirement benefits should never be treated as a decision to ignore Medicare enrollment.

Cash flow, taxes, and the value of flexibility

Waiting is only practical if your household can pay living expenses during the gap. Sources might include wages, a pension, cash reserves, or withdrawals from retirement accounts. Compare the cost of those withdrawals with the permanent increase in Social Security income.

Taxes can change the preferred timing. Social Security may be taxable depending on combined income and the rest of your household’s financial picture. Taking benefits early and investing them, or delaying benefits while drawing from tax-deferred accounts, can produce different after-tax results. A generic SSA table cannot resolve those interactions; model federal and applicable state taxes using your actual income sources.

Liquidity has a legitimate value. An early claim provides cash and reduces withdrawals from investments, while waiting purchases a larger guaranteed payment later. Decide how much emergency liquidity you need before committing to a strategy that assumes you can wait.

A practical decision process

  1. Confirm your FRA. Use your birth year and the current SSA schedule; do not assume that everyone has the same FRA.
  2. Retrieve personalized estimates. Sign in to my Social Security and record the monthly amounts shown for age 62, FRA, and age 70.
  3. Build a cumulative comparison. For each plausible death age, total the checks under each start age. Label the result as nominal and list the assumptions.
  4. Calculate break-even points. Apply the simple formula to each pair of options, including the number of months of payments forgone.
  5. Add household cases. Model both spouses while both are alive and the survivor after the first death.
  6. Add employment rules. Account for wages, the pre-FRA earnings test, possible withheld months, and whether more work replaces a low year in the 35-year record.
  7. Plan Medicare separately. If you are not receiving Social Security at 65, determine how and when to enroll in Medicare.
  8. Stress-test the plan. Recalculate if health, employment, marital status, assets, or Social Security law changes.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling 70 universally “best.” It produces the largest monthly check, but lifetime totals depend on survival and household assumptions.
  • Using a population average as a personal forecast. The SSA present-value analysis describes average life expectancy, not your health or family situation.
  • Ignoring the higher earner in a couple. Survivor income can make the higher earner’s claiming age more consequential than a single-life break-even result.
  • Confusing retirement with claiming. You can work after claiming or stop working before claiming.
  • Forgetting Medicare. Delaying Social Security does not automatically enroll you in Medicare or remove the need to act at 65.
  • Relying on an unlabeled calculator result. Record whether the comparison includes taxes, investment growth, inflation adjustments, and survivor benefits; a basic nominal calculation usually does not.

When to revisit your choice

Review the plan when a major input changes: a new health diagnosis, a job loss or return to work, a marriage or divorce, a spouse’s claiming decision, a change in savings, or a change in Social Security law. Keep the original estimates and assumptions so you can see which variable moved the result rather than starting from a new guess.

The decision in one sentence

Claim at 62 when immediate income and liquidity outweigh the value of a larger later check; claim at FRA when you want the unreduced benefit without waiting to 70; delay to 70 when you can fund the gap and place a high value on the largest lifetime monthly payment and, where relevant, stronger survivor protection.
