JPMorgan is the strongest all-around candidate on the available operating evidence. Its 2025 filing shows $57.0 billion of net income, 17% return on equity (ROE) and 20% return on tangible common equity (ROTCE). Bank of America offers a broad U.S. franchise with $30.509 billion of 2025 net income, while Citigroup is a higher-risk transformation investment that produced $85.2 billion of revenue and 7.7% ROTCE.
That ranking is not a complete buy signal. A long-term decision also depends on the price you pay, dividend yield, planned buybacks, capital requirements, credit conditions, interest rates and your tolerance for execution risk. The evidence supports a quality-first preference for JPMorgan, a rate- and credit-sensitive U.S. franchise case for Bank of America, and a turnaround-oriented case for Citi.

Quick comparison
| Bank | Latest figures in the supplied filings | What the figures suggest | Main issue to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| JPMorgan Chase | $57.0 billion 2025 net income; 17% ROE; 20% ROTCE | Highest demonstrated profitability and a diversified earnings base | Whether the share price already reflects that quality |
| Bank of America | $30.509 billion 2025 net income; $3.81 diluted EPS; $113.097 billion revenue; 11.4% standardized CET1 | Large U.S. consumer, commercial, wealth and markets franchise | Deposit pricing, net-interest margin, credit costs and the rate cycle |
| Citigroup | $85.2 billion 2025 revenue; 7.7% ROTCE; Services revenue up 8%, Markets up 11%, Banking up 32% | Transformation and growth upside, especially in global businesses | Execution, regulatory remediation and the lower current return profile |
The figures are not perfectly interchangeable: JPMorgan’s headline numbers emphasize net income and returns, Bank of America’s release includes revenue and diluted EPS, and Citi’s annual report emphasizes revenue, ROTCE and segment growth. Use them as starting points rather than as a mechanical ranking based on one metric.
What matters when comparing bank stocks
Profitability that can survive a cycle
ROE measures profit earned on shareholders’ equity. ROTCE removes goodwill and certain intangible assets from the equity base, making it useful when comparing banks with different acquisition histories. A high single-year return can be temporary, so long-term investors should examine whether returns remain healthy when loan losses rise, margins compress or investment-banking activity slows.

On the supplied evidence, JPMorgan has the clearest profitability lead. Citi’s 7.7% ROTCE is materially lower, which means the transformation must improve earnings quality or capital productivity to close the gap. Bank of America’s cited results establish its earnings and revenue scale, but the supplied figures do not include a directly comparable 2025 ROE or ROTCE number.
Revenue diversification
Bank earnings come from several sources: interest earned on loans and securities, fees from payments and asset management, trading, investment banking and other services. Diversification can reduce dependence on any one market, but it does not eliminate risk; different businesses weaken at different points in the economic cycle.
JPMorgan’s consumer, commercial, investment-banking and asset-management operations provide the broadest explicitly described mix in the filings summarized here. Bank of America combines U.S. consumer and commercial banking with wealth and markets exposure. Citi’s case rests heavily on global transaction services, markets and banking, with the 2025 report showing growth in each of those cited areas.

Common equity tier 1 (CET1) capital absorbs losses before depositors and most creditors. A bank operating well above its requirement has more flexibility to pay dividends or repurchase shares, subject to regulatory approval and management decisions. A bank close to its requirement may need to retain more earnings.
Do not compare a reported CET1 ratio with a regulatory requirement as if they were the same thing. The ratio is the bank’s capital measure; the requirement is the minimum level imposed after applying the Federal Reserve’s framework, including the stress capital buffer and, for systemically important banks, a GSIB surcharge.
JPMorgan: the quality-and-scale choice
Why it leads the comparison
JPMorgan’s 2025 Form 10-K reports $57.0 billion in net income, 17% ROE and 20% ROTCE. Those figures provide the strongest direct evidence of profitable scale among the three companies in the supplied material. The bank’s combination of consumer, commercial, investment-banking and asset-management businesses also gives investors several earnings engines instead of a single specialized franchise.

That combination matters for a long holding period. Consumer banking can provide recurring deposits and payment activity; commercial banking ties earnings to businesses and credit demand; investment banking and markets can add upside when capital-market activity improves; and asset management supplies fee revenue. The mix can still experience simultaneous pressure during a severe recession, but it is less dependent on one narrow product.

The central risk is not that JPMorgan lacks a business; it is that investors pay too much for proven quality. A premium valuation can reduce future returns even when the company continues to execute well. Before buying, compare the current share price with tangible book value and normalized earnings, then compare its dividend yield and expected capital returns with the alternatives.
Also track whether returns remain durable rather than relying on the 2025 snapshot. Watch net interest income, loan growth, provisions, charge-offs, nonperforming loans and CET1 each quarter. Deterioration across several of those measures would matter more than a single noisy quarter.
Bank of America: broad U.S. exposure with rate sensitivity
What the 2025 results show
Bank of America reported $30.509 billion of 2025 net income, $3.81 of diluted EPS and $113.097 billion of revenue. Its standardized CET1 ratio was 11.4%. The franchise spans U.S. consumer and commercial banking, wealth management and markets, giving shareholders exposure to household finances, business activity, investing and capital markets.
This is a different proposition from JPMorgan’s demonstrated return lead. Bank of America can appeal to investors who want a large domestic deposit and lending platform and who are willing to accept more sensitivity to the interaction between interest rates, deposit costs and credit performance.

Why interest rates and deposits matter
Net interest margin is the spread between what a bank earns on interest-bearing assets and what it pays for funding, expressed relative to those assets. When rates rise, asset yields may increase, but depositors can also demand higher rates or move cash into alternatives. When rates fall, funding costs may decline, yet loan and securities yields can reset lower. The effect on earnings depends on the speed and direction of both changes.

For Bank of America, follow deposit balances and the rates paid on them alongside net interest income. A favorable rate scenario is not simply “rates down”; it is a scenario in which funding costs fall faster than asset yields and credit remains manageable. A hostile scenario combines deposit repricing, weak loan demand and rising provisions.
Credit and valuation questions
Review provisions for credit losses, net charge-offs and nonperforming loans to determine whether reported earnings are being supported by healthy borrowers or by unusually low loss recognition. Then compare the share price with tangible book and normalized earnings. The right valuation depends on the return the franchise can earn through a full cycle, not on one year’s EPS alone.
Citigroup: a higher-risk transformation investment
Evidence of operating momentum
Citi’s 2025 annual report records $85.2 billion of revenue and 7.7% ROTCE. Within the businesses highlighted in the report, Services revenue increased 8%, Markets increased 11% and Banking increased 32%. Those gains show that the transformation has areas of meaningful growth rather than being only a cost-cutting exercise.
The strategic case centers on global transaction services, markets and banking, together with simplification and improved controls. If those businesses grow while the organization becomes easier to manage, returns could improve from the current level.
Why the risk is higher
A 7.7% ROTCE is below JPMorgan’s cited 20%, so Citi must execute more than one task: grow attractive businesses, reduce complexity, strengthen controls and satisfy regulators. Failure in any one area can delay the improvement in returns. Transformation stories also tend to produce uneven quarterly results, making them less suitable for investors who need predictable profitability.
Citi’s higher Federal Reserve CET1 requirement—11.6% in the June 2026 table—can further constrain distributions relative to a bank with a lower requirement, depending on the capital it holds above that threshold. Treat the stock as an execution-sensitive position, not as a substitute for a mature, high-return bank.

Regulatory capital: what the June 2026 requirements imply
| Bank | Total CET1 requirement listed by the Federal Reserve | How to use the figure |
|---|---|---|
| Bank of America | 10.0% | Reference point for assessing capital available for dividends and buybacks |
| Citigroup | 11.6% | Highest listed requirement; leaves less room for distributions at the same capital level |
| JPMorgan | 11.5% | Almost as high as Citi’s; profitability and capital generation are therefore important to payout capacity |
The Federal Reserve framework combines a 4.5% minimum CET1 ratio with a stress capital buffer and a GSIB surcharge where applicable. Requirements can change, so use the June 2026 figures as a dated reference, not as a permanent rule.
A high requirement is not automatically a negative. It reflects the risk framework applied to a large institution. The investor question is whether the bank can generate enough capital after absorbing losses and supporting growth to fund its intended dividend and repurchase plan.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the banks respond to different market environments
If rates fall
Falling rates can reduce the interest expense on some deposits and other funding, but they also lower yields on new loans and reinvested securities. Bank of America is especially relevant to a rate-sensitive thesis because its earnings depend on deposit pricing and net-interest margin. JPMorgan and Citi also face the same industry mechanics, although their business mixes add other sources of revenue.
Do not buy any of the three solely on the expectation that rate cuts will lift earnings. Check whether loan growth is accelerating, whether deposit competition is easing and whether credit losses remain controlled.
If the economy weakens
Recession risk usually makes provisions, charge-offs and nonperforming loans more important than headline revenue growth. A diversified bank can offset weakness in one segment, but no bank is immune to widespread borrower stress. Compare the direction of credit indicators with capital ratios and management’s payout decisions.
If capital markets recover
Investment banking and markets can improve quickly when deal activity, issuance and trading volumes recover. Citi’s 2025 Banking growth of 32% and Markets growth of 11% show why those businesses matter to its transformation case. JPMorgan and Bank of America also have markets and investment-banking exposure, so a recovery can benefit all three, but the effect on total earnings will differ by franchise mix.

Industry context from the FDIC
The FDIC’s Q4 2025 Quarterly Banking Profile reported $77.7 billion of aggregate net income for FDIC-insured institutions and a 1.24% return on assets. The profile also described strong industry capital and liquidity. These figures provide context rather than a forecast for any one bank: industry averages include thousands of institutions with different business models.
Use the industry data as a check on the cycle. If all three banks report weaker net interest income, higher provisions and falling returns while the broader industry shows the same pattern, the pressure may be macroeconomic. If one bank deteriorates materially faster, company-specific execution or credit exposure deserves more attention.
Valuation: the missing half of the decision
Compare price with tangible book
Price-to-tangible-book value compares the market value of the shares with tangible common equity. It is useful for banks because the balance sheet and earning power are closely linked, but it is not a standalone answer. A bank that earns substantially higher ROTCE can rationally trade at a larger premium than a lower-return peer.
Recommended Free Tools
Normalize earnings
Use a multi-year view of diluted EPS, net income and provisions rather than capitalizing a peak or trough year. Ask what earnings would look like under ordinary credit losses, a normal level of investment-banking activity and a sustainable net-interest margin.
Include shareholder distributions
Dividend yield and buybacks affect total return. Verify the current dividend, the latest authorization and the expected payout against the applicable CET1 requirement. The supplied material does not provide current market prices, yields or buyback amounts, so those inputs must be updated at the time of purchase.
A practical decision framework
Choose JPMorgan when quality is the priority
- You value the strongest documented profitability and broad diversification.
- You accept that a premium valuation may reduce the margin of safety.
- You are prepared to monitor whether 2025-level returns remain durable.
Choose Bank of America when you want a U.S. franchise and cycle exposure
- You want substantial consumer, commercial, wealth and markets exposure in the United States.
- You have a view on deposit pricing, net interest margin and the direction of credit costs.
- You are willing to accept greater sensitivity to the rate cycle than a pure quality-first approach.
Choose Citi only when you can underwrite execution risk
- You believe global transaction services, markets and banking can continue to grow.
- You can tolerate lower current ROTCE while simplification and control improvements continue.
- You understand that regulatory remediation and transformation setbacks can delay the payoff.
Step-by-step checklist before buying
- Set the holding period and risk limit. Decide whether you can hold through a credit downturn and how much bank-stock exposure your portfolio can withstand.
- Update the market data. Record each stock’s price, price-to-tangible-book ratio, normalized price-to-earnings ratio, dividend yield and announced buyback plan.
- Read the latest quarterly filing. Compare net interest income, loan growth, provisions, charge-offs, nonperforming loans and CET1 with the prior quarter and prior year.
- Test the rate thesis. Identify what happens to deposit costs, asset yields and net interest margin if rates fall faster, stay high or rise again.
- Test the capital thesis. Compare actual CET1 with the applicable requirement and determine whether planned distributions leave an adequate buffer.
- Separate recurring earnings from cyclical gains. Distinguish payment, deposit, wealth and transaction-service revenue from unusually strong trading or investment-banking results.
- Write a disqualifying condition. Examples include a sustained decline in returns, repeated control failures, sharply rising credit losses or a valuation that leaves no margin for disappointment.
- Size the position. Even the strongest bank can be affected by the same economic cycle as its peers, so avoid treating one stock as a substitute for diversification.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling the highest-profit bank the safest automatically. Profitability, capital, liquidity, valuation and risk exposures are separate questions.
- Using revenue as a proxy for shareholder return. Revenue growth must translate into sustainable returns after credit costs, expenses and capital needs.
- Assuming rate cuts are unconditionally positive. Lower funding costs can arrive with lower asset yields or weaker economic activity.
- Ignoring the denominator in return ratios. ROTCE and ROE are useful only when the capital base and one-time items are understood.
- Comparing reported CET1 ratios with requirements without context. A ratio is an actual capital measure; a requirement is a regulatory threshold.
- Buying a turnaround without an execution milestone. For Citi, specify which improvements in growth, controls, simplification and returns would confirm the thesis.
- Overlooking price. A great business can be a poor investment when purchased at an excessive multiple.
Final ranking for long-term investors
- JPMorgan: the best default choice for investors prioritizing demonstrated profitability, diversification and execution.
- Bank of America: the better fit for investors seeking a broad U.S. franchise and willing to make a view on rates, deposits and credit normalization.
- Citigroup: the speculative option for investors who want transformation upside and can accept materially greater execution and regulatory-remediation risk.
The order can change if valuation spreads become unusually wide. Recheck the latest filings, CET1 requirements, dividend and buyback plans, tangible-book multiples and credit trends before committing capital.
