Neither option is always worth more. Amazon Shop with Points trades potential value for a fast, simple checkout credit; Citi Travel and airline or hotel transfers can be better for a particular itinerary, but only when the points required, cash price, taxes, fees, card terms and award availability line up in your favor. Citi says ThankYou Point values vary by card and reward, so the reliable answer comes from comparing the exact Amazon checkout or travel booking shown in your account—not from a universal cents-per-point rule.
What determines the better redemption?
Start with the transaction you are actually considering. For Amazon, record the dollar amount that the checkout says your points will cover and the number of ThankYou Points required. For travel, price the same flight, hotel stay, car rental or experience in cash, then check the points-and-cash option in Citi Travel. For a transfer, locate an available award in the receiving airline or hotel program before moving any points.

Citi’s official FAQ states, “Citi ThankYou Point values may vary depending on your Citi credit card and the reward.” Check the current ThankYou FAQ while signed in, because available rewards, partners and terms can change.
How Shop with Points on Amazon works
Eligibility and enrollment
An eligible Citi card can be added to an Amazon account for Shop with Points. Citi says, “You’ll automatically be enrolled in Shop with Points when you add your eligible Citi credit card to your Amazon account.” Enrollment does not mean every item qualifies: item restrictions, card eligibility and the payment method selected at checkout still apply.
Redeeming at checkout
- Add the eligible Citi card to your Amazon account and confirm that it is the card selected for the purchase.
- At checkout, look for the Shop with Points choice associated with that card. The account will show whether points can be used for the order and how much of the purchase the displayed points amount offsets.
- Write down both displayed figures: the dollar amount avoided and the points requested. Do not substitute a rate found on an old blog or a different Citi card.
- Apply the formula above. If the checkout value is acceptable to you, complete the order; if not, use another payment method and preserve the points for a different redemption.
Amazon is chiefly a convenience redemption. You can use points against an eligible purchase without finding award inventory, coordinating travel dates or transferring to another program. That convenience may be worthwhile even when a carefully selected travel redemption could produce a higher mathematical value. The checkout display is the controlling rate for your account.

Booking through Citi Travel
ThankYou members can use Citi Travel to book flights, hotels, car rentals and experiences. To evaluate a booking, sign in to your ThankYou account, open the travel booking area, search for the exact itinerary or stay, and record the cash price, points price and any required cash component. Search the same dates, room type, passenger count and cancellation conditions when comparing cash and points; a cheaper or less flexible alternative is not a fair comparison.
Subtract unavoidable taxes and fees from the cash amount you would otherwise pay. If a booking requires a cash component, include it in the calculation rather than treating the entire displayed price as covered by points. Travel portal pricing and availability are account- and date-specific, so a result seen by one member is not a standing rate for every cardholder.

Transferring to an airline or hotel program
Citi also lists airline and hotel loyalty programs for transfers. The current FAQ includes examples such as American Airlines, JetBlue, Virgin Atlantic, Singapore Airlines, Flying Blue, Choice Privileges and Wyndham Rewards, along with other partners. The complete list, eligibility and transfer terms should be checked on Citi’s live FAQ before every transfer.
- Find the award you would actually book in the receiving program. Confirm the dates, cabin or room, cancellation terms and award inventory.
- Record the award’s points requirement and every tax, fee or surcharge that remains payable in cash.
- Check the transfer ratio and whether your Citi card is eligible for that partner. Citi says transfer value depends on the card and program; do not assume another cardholder receives the same ratio.
- Compare the resulting value with the cash fare or room price and with the Citi Travel option.
- Read the applicable program terms before submitting. A transfer can be slow or irreversible under the relevant terms, so do not transfer speculatively while hoping an award will appear.
A transfer can be powerful when you have confirmed scarce award space and a favorable comparison. It can also be the least convenient route: inventory may disappear, taxes may be high, and points moved to a partner may no longer be usable through Citi if your plans change.

Earning and redeeming are separate calculations. A card can award extra points for a category without promising that those points will cover a fixed amount later. For example, the 2025 Citi Strata Premier terms list these earning rates:

These are earning rates, not redemption valuations. Read the Strata Premier terms for definitions, exclusions and the applicable version. Holders of another Citi card should use that card’s current terms and their own logged-in redemption screen. Citi’s Strata Premier product page is another place to confirm the card being discussed, but it should not be used to infer a universal ThankYou rate.

The table is a decision aid, not a ranking. It is entirely possible for Amazon to be the sensible choice for a small, immediate purchase, while a particular confirmed award produces a stronger value for a trip. The opposite can also happen when a travel portal price is high, an award carries large surcharges or the dates are inflexible.

Complete the following fields before redeeming. Keeping the alternatives on one page prevents a headline rate from distracting you from the real transaction.

For an illustrative calculation only, if a comparable fare is $300, $20 of taxes remains payable and the redemption requires 20,000 points, the calculation is ($300 − $20) ÷ 20,000 = $0.014 per point, or 1.4 cents. This is not a quoted Citi rate; replace every number with the figures displayed for your own transaction.
When Amazon is the rational choice
The checkout rate is competitive for your account
If the Amazon screen gives a value that compares favorably with the travel alternatives you can actually use, convenience has real value. You avoid searching award calendars and do not risk moving points into a program you may not use.
You need a simple redemption now
Amazon can make sense when you have no planned trip, need to reduce an eligible order, or prefer a certain and immediate use over a possible future redemption. That is a preference decision, not evidence that Amazon has a universally superior rate.
Your travel comparison is weak or unavailable
If the dates you need are not available at a reasonable award price, the portal’s cash price is inflated, or partner fees erase the apparent advantage, preserving flexibility or using the displayed Amazon option may be better than forcing a travel redemption.

When travel is worth investigating first
A specific itinerary produces a higher calculated value
Travel deserves priority when the same itinerary costs substantially more in cash than the points-and-cash option, after subtracting unavoidable taxes and fees. Make the calculation with the exact dates and conditions; a theoretical premium-cabin value is irrelevant if the award cannot be booked.
You can use a confirmed partner award
Transfers are most defensible after you see the award, understand the partner’s rules and confirm the ratio for your card. This sequence limits the risk of stranded points. Never transfer merely because a partner appears on a list.
You value travel-specific flexibility or experiences
A Citi Travel redemption may include a flight, hotel, rental car or experience that an Amazon credit cannot provide. Compare cancellation conditions and the cash you would otherwise spend, not just the number of points displayed.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Using a fixed cents-per-point rule
There is no verified universal Amazon or travel valuation in Citi’s published material. Rates vary by card and reward, so a number copied from another cardholder can mislead you. Use your own checkout and booking screens.

Comparing different purchases
A $500 cash fare and a 25,000-point hotel award are not automatically comparable. Match the destination, dates, room or cabin, traveler count, cancellation terms and included charges as closely as possible.

Ignoring cash charges
Taxes, resort fees, booking fees and surcharges reduce the cash value avoided. Subtract unavoidable amounts before dividing by points. If a fee is optional, decide whether you would actually pay it and keep the assumption consistent across alternatives.
Confusing bonus earning with redemption value
The Strata Premier’s 10-point travel category, 3-point categories and 1-point base rate describe how points are earned under those terms. They do not establish what a point will cover at Amazon or in travel.
Transferring before finding the award
Partner inventory and transfer timing can change. Confirm the award first, check the receiving program’s terms and only then submit a transfer you are prepared to leave in that program.

Assuming every Citi card has the same options
Citi expressly ties value to the card and reward. A card-specific transfer ratio, earning category or redemption option should not be generalized to another ThankYou account.
A decision sequence you can use every time
- Identify the exact Amazon order or travel itinerary you would purchase with cash.
- Check eligibility: linked Citi card and eligible item for Amazon; available booking and card access for Citi Travel; eligible card, partner and award inventory for a transfer.
- Record the displayed cash price, points requirement and unavoidable cash charges for each viable route.
- Calculate value per point using the same formula and comparable assumptions.
- Adjust for practical factors: cancellation rules, transfer timing, award scarcity, effort and whether you need the purchase now.
- Choose the option that gives you the best combination of calculated value and usable flexibility. If none is compelling, keep the points for a better-defined transaction.
What to check before publishing or acting on a current offer
ThankYou partners, ratios, eligible cards, Amazon item rules and travel prices can change. Open the current Citi ThankYou FAQ and your logged-in account rather than relying on a cached list. For card-specific earning and eligibility, read the terms for the exact card and version you hold. No account-specific Amazon checkout or Citi Travel booking is guaranteed by this guide, and no single published figure establishes that travel always beats Amazon.
