Citi ThankYou Points at Walmart: Why Declining the Checkout Redemption Usually Wins

If a Walmart checkout terminal asks whether you want to redeem Citi ThankYou points, decline it unless immediate savings are worth giving up potentially better uses of your points. The published example was 1,250 points for $10—0.8 cents per point—but that was a reported offer, not a permanent rate for every Citi card or Walmart transaction. Check the live points-and-dollar amounts shown to you before accepting.

Should you use Citi ThankYou points at Walmart?

For most rewards-focused shoppers, no. A point-of-sale redemption is convenient, but convenience does not make it a good value. The relevant comparison is how many dollars your points remove from the Walmart purchase versus what those same points can buy through your Citi account.

The widely reported Walmart example came from The Points Guy in 2022: a terminal offered 1,250 Citi ThankYou points for a $10 reduction. The arithmetic is $10 divided by 1,250 points, or 0.8 cents per point. The report described an eligible in-store purchase that exceeded $10 and an eligible store and transaction. It did not establish a rate guaranteed for every account.

Citi’s terms reserve the right to change point-to-dollar conversion rates. Citi also says the value of ThankYou points varies by card and by reward. Treat 0.8 cents as a historical, reported example and use the offer currently displayed in your own account as the controlling number.

How much are Citi points worth at Walmart?

The reported 1,250-point offer

In the reported checkout example, the screen showed “Use 1,250 points for $10.” That equals 0.8 cents per point, or $8 in value per 1,000 points. This is a redemption against a Walmart purchase, not a statement that every Citi ThankYou point has the same value elsewhere.

The example also illustrates why you should read the terminal carefully. A purchase had to exceed $10, and both the Walmart location and the transaction had to qualify. Your screen might show a different minimum, a different conversion, or no offer at all.

Calculate the live offer yourself

For example, the reported offer is (10 ÷ 1,250) × 100 = 0.8 cents per point. If your screen offers $12 for 1,600 points, calculate that offer independently rather than assuming it matches the published example.

Why did Walmart ask whether you want to redeem Citi points?

Citi calls this type of transaction Shop with Points. Citi’s Double Cash rewards guide lists Walmart as a participating merchant, while the ThankYou terms describe in-person offers at certain participating partners. Participation does not mean every Walmart store, item, purchase, card, or account receives an offer.

When Citi’s systems identify a potentially eligible purchase, Citi may share account information with the participating partner to determine eligibility. If the purchase qualifies, the terminal can display a points-redemption offer for you to accept or decline. Citi’s terms say your card account must be current and in good standing, and they allow restrictions on which items can be covered.

The prompt is optional. Declining it leaves the purchase to be paid normally and does not cancel your ThankYou account or forfeit your points. Authorized users can also encounter these prompts, so anyone permitted to use the card should know that the points decision affects the shared account balance.

What to do at the Walmart terminal

  1. Pause before choosing an option. Read the exact points amount and dollar reduction on the screen. Do not rely on a remembered rate from an article or a prior shopping trip.
  2. Check the purchase conditions. Confirm that the screen is applying points to the intended purchase and note any minimum purchase or item restrictions.
  3. Decline when the value is not attractive. Choose the decline or continue-with-card option if the displayed rate is lower than a realistic alternative you would use.
  4. Accept only when convenience is your priority. If reducing today’s bill matters more to you than preserving points for another redemption, accepting is a legitimate personal choice.
  5. Review the result. Keep the receipt and later check your Citi activity to verify that the points deduction and purchase credit match what the terminal displayed.

Compare Walmart with Citi’s other redemption choices

Citi lists several ways to use ThankYou points. The best alternative depends on your card, the specific reward, availability, and what you would otherwise pay. Do not assume that one universal ThankYou rate applies to all Citi products.

Redemption path What the available Citi guidance supports How to compare it with Walmart
Walmart Shop with Points The Points Guy reported 1,250 points for $10 (0.8 cents each) in a 2022 checkout example. Citi identifies Walmart as a participating merchant. Use the points and dollar amounts shown on your current terminal; the conversion can change.
Cash back Citi’s Double Cash guide lists statement credit, direct deposit, and check redemptions. Open the logged-in redemption screen and calculate the displayed dollars per point. Card-specific values apply.
Citi Travel Citi says points can pay for flights, hotels, rental cars, and attractions through Citi Travel. Compare the exact cash booking price with the exact points required for the itinerary you would actually book.
Gift cards and shopping Citi lists physical and electronic gift cards and participating Shop with Points merchants. Check each reward’s displayed points price; partner and reward values can differ.
Transfer partners Citi’s ThankYou FAQs list airline, hotel, and retail transfer partners and say value depends on the card and loyalty program. Consider a transfer only when you can use the receiving currency, the exchange rate is acceptable, and award availability exists.

Can you use Citi ThankYou points for cash back instead?

For Citi Double Cash, yes: Citi says points may be redeemed as a statement credit, direct deposit, or check. The practical question is not whether cash back exists, but how many points your account requires for the cash amount you want. Sign in to Citi, open the ThankYou redemption area, select the cash option, and record the points and dollars before comparing them with Walmart.

Do not transfer a value shown for a Double Cash account to another Citi card. Citi states that point values vary according to the card and reward. A cash option that looks better or worse on one account may not have the same conversion on another.

When accepting the Walmart offer can make sense

  • You need an immediate reduction on this purchase. If lowering today’s out-of-pocket cost is more useful than a future reward, the convenience may justify the redemption.
  • The live rate is competitive for your account. Compare the exact Walmart rate with the cash-back value and any travel or transfer use you can realistically complete.
  • You have a small balance with no planned use. Using points for a qualifying purchase can be reasonable when you would otherwise leave the balance idle, provided you accept the displayed value.
  • You understand the account impact. The points come from the shared Citi account, so an authorized user should not accept an offer without knowing the account holder’s preference.

When declining is the better decision

  • You are maximizing rewards. A 0.8-cent reported rate may be below the value available from a redemption you already intend to use.
  • You have a specific travel or transfer plan. Preserve the points until you verify the transfer ratio, award availability, and itinerary cost. A theoretical travel value is not a guaranteed saving.
  • The terminal’s conversion is unclear. If you cannot see both the points and dollar amounts, decline and investigate through your account later.
  • The purchase is not fully eligible. Citi can restrict items and transactions, and a prompt can differ by store, account, or purchase.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming 0.8 cents is a permanent Citi rate

The 0.8-cent figure comes from a 2022 secondary report. Citi’s terms say conversion rates may change at any time. Use the historical number as a benchmark, never as a promise.

Confusing merchant participation with universal eligibility

Citi naming Walmart as a participating Shop with Points merchant means the program can operate there; it does not guarantee an offer at every location or for every transaction. Eligibility is determined for the individual purchase and account.

Comparing points without comparing the actual reward

“Travel is worth more” is not a calculation. Compare the cash price and points price for the flight, hotel, car, or attraction you would book. Include transfer ratios and availability before deciding that a transfer beats Walmart.

Letting another card user redeem the balance accidentally

Authorized users may see the same type of terminal prompt. Tell them whether the account is saving points for a particular use and ask them to decline any unexpected offer.

Ignoring account status

Citi’s in-person terms require the card account to be current and in good standing. If an expected prompt disappears, confirm account status and transaction eligibility rather than assuming the program has ended.

A simple decision rule for every purchase

  1. Write down the terminal’s offered dollars and required points.
  2. Compute cents per point with the formula above.
  3. Log in to Citi and check the cash-back amount available for the same number of points.
  4. Check only alternatives you can actually use, such as a planned Citi Travel booking or an available transfer award.
  5. Decline Walmart when a realistic alternative gives more value or when you are unsure; accept when immediate convenience is worth the displayed trade-off.

This process takes less than a minute and prevents a checkout prompt from making the decision for you.

What Citi’s convenience message does—and does not—prove

When Citi announced the offering in 2019, Mary Hines, then Head of Customer Engagement and Innovation for Citi Branded Cards, called it “the latest in our journey to continuously offer the most convenient points redemption options.” That statement explains why the prompt exists: it is designed to make redemption easy at the register. It is promotional language about convenience, not evidence that Walmart provides a high points value.

Bottom line for Citi cardholders

Decline the Walmart prompt by default if your goal is to maximize Citi ThankYou points. The documented example—1,250 points for $10, or 0.8 cents each—can be useful for an immediate discount but is not a guaranteed current rate. Citi says values vary by card and reward and reserves the right to change conversion rates. Read the live offer, compare it with the cash-back and other redemptions visible in your own account, and accept only when the convenience is worth the value you are giving up.
