Cisco replaced Rodney Clark as senior vice president of Global Partner Sales in August 2025, appointing longtime sales executive Tim Coogan to lead the organization. Clark remained with Cisco as a strategic adviser through the end of 2025. The change came as Cisco was redesigning its partner model through Cisco 360, but Cisco did not publicly say that partner criticism caused Clark’s departure.

What changed at Cisco

Cisco announced on August 18, 2025, that Rodney Clark was leaving his global channel leadership role after less than two years. Tim Coogan, then senior vice president of Cisco’s U.S. commercial business, assumed responsibility for Global Partner Sales. The initial announcement described the change as effective immediately, while related coverage described Coogan’s operational start as the following Monday.

Clark was expected to remain at Cisco as a strategic adviser through the end of 2025. That means “Clark is out” should not be interpreted as an immediate disappearance from the company. Cisco has not publicly characterized the move as a firing, nor has it disclosed a reason for his departure. The available evidence does not establish that partner dissatisfaction caused the change.

CRN’s original report provides the announcement details and Cisco’s statements about the transition.

Who is Rodney Clark?

Clark joined Cisco from Johnson Controls, where he had been chief commercial officer. Cisco appointed him to its channel leadership position in 2023. His responsibilities included Cisco’s partner relationships and small- and medium-business activities.

Clark’s departure therefore represented a change in leadership during a particularly sensitive period for Cisco’s ecosystem. It did not, on the available evidence, demonstrate that Cisco had abandoned the strategy associated with his tenure.

Who is Tim Coogan?

Coogan is a longtime Cisco commercial and sales executive, with roughly 25 to 26 years at the company depending on the publication date of the source. Before taking over Global Partner Sales, he led Cisco’s U.S. commercial business, which CRN reported covered more than $7 billion in annual product and service sales across small and medium businesses and Fortune 1000 customers.

He had also served as area vice president for Cisco’s Global Enterprise Segment. His background is best described as deep Cisco sales and commercial leadership, rather than as that of a recently appointed outside channel executive.

That experience mattered because Coogan took over while Cisco was asking partners to adapt to a substantially revised business model. His institutional knowledge could reduce the learning curve, while his commercial background gave him direct experience with customers, sales teams and vendor-partner execution.

Why the timing mattered: Cisco 360

The leadership change occurred during the development and rollout of Cisco 360, Cisco’s redesigned partner program. The company positioned the program as a move away from measuring partners primarily through transaction volume and toward recognizing capabilities, expertise and customer value.

Cisco said the program was intended to support a broader range of partner models, including:

  • Traditional resellers and distributors
  • Consultants and systems integrators
  • Managed service providers and managed security service providers
  • Developers and services-led partners

Cisco also connected Cisco 360 to opportunities involving networking, security, collaboration, services, Splunk, cloud and AI infrastructure. The company said the approach could make partner expertise easier for customers to identify and create more predictable profitability for partners. Those are Cisco’s objectives and claims, not independently verified results.

A channel leader has an outsized role during a program transition because partners need concrete answers about incentive eligibility, designation requirements, certifications, measurement, services opportunities and the value of existing investments. They also need to know whether the new program will improve their economics or simply add administrative work.

Cisco’s continuity message

Cisco executives emphasized that the company’s commitment to partners remained unchanged. Oliver Tuszik, Cisco’s chief sales officer and executive vice president, described Coogan’s appointment as a continuation of Cisco’s partner strategy and highlighted the channel experience within senior leadership.

Cisco also said Clark and Coogan were committed to a smooth transition. Elisabeth De Dobbeleer said Cisco 360 remained a priority and that the company would continue working with partners during the leadership change.

Those statements support a continuity interpretation: Cisco presented the move as a succession within an ongoing strategy, not as a repudiation of Cisco 360.

How partners reacted

Some partners reacted positively to Coogan’s appointment. One later CRN headline described partners as “high-fiving” the change. That reaction should be treated as an indicator of sentiment among quoted partners, not as a representative survey of Cisco’s entire channel.

The broader context was uncertainty about Cisco 360. Partners were evaluating whether the revised program would reward services, managed operations and customer outcomes, and whether requirements would be practical for smaller or more specialized organizations.

What happened after the announcement

In November 2025, Coogan described listening to partners and using their feedback to shape Cisco’s go-to-market approach. He argued that his long tenure gave him perspective on how vendors and partners can work together to deliver customer outcomes.

Cisco 360 subsequently launched on January 26, 2026. Cisco’s official announcement identified Coogan as senior vice president of Global Partner Sales, indicating that the appointment was not merely an interim handoff in the available official material.

The launch also highlighted Cisco Partner Locator, a customer-facing tool intended to help customers find partners across areas such as networking, security, collaboration, services, Splunk, cloud and AI infrastructure. Inclusion in a directory may improve visibility, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed source of leads.

What Cisco partners should watch

1. Profitability and incentives

Partners should determine whether Cisco 360 rewards recurring revenue, services delivery, consulting, customer outcomes, portfolio breadth or other capabilities. Cisco’s promise of more predictable profitability needs to be tested against actual incentive rules and payment data.

2. Program accessibility

Smaller partners, specialists, MSPs and MSSPs should examine whether they can qualify without investing disproportionately in certifications, staffing or reporting. A capability-based program may create new opportunities for services-led firms, but it may also raise the cost of participation.

3. Measurement and transparency

Partners should ask how Cisco’s Partner Value Index is calculated, which metrics are visible, how frequently scores change and whether partners can correct inaccurate data or appeal an unfavorable assessment.

4. Portfolio expectations

The program’s broad emphasis on networking, security, collaboration, Splunk, cloud and AI infrastructure could create cross-selling opportunities. It could also favor larger partners with expertise across several product areas over narrowly focused specialists. The commercial impact will depend on the final requirements and each partner’s business model.

5. Transition protection

Partners should confirm whether legacy designations and incentives carry forward, whether payments could be delayed during implementation, and whether regional rules differ. Cisco’s public launch material describes the program’s goals but does not establish that every partner type will benefit equally.

What the leadership change does—and does not—show

The personnel change is significant because it placed a longtime Cisco sales operator in charge of Global Partner Sales during a major program redesign. Coogan’s appointment may reassure partners who value Cisco experience and commercial familiarity.

But the evidence does not support stronger conclusions. It does not prove that Clark was fired, that partner backlash caused his exit, that Cisco reversed Clark’s strategy or that all partners preferred Coogan. Cisco continued with Cisco 360 and later launched the program under Coogan’s leadership.

The most defensible reading is that Cisco conducted a leadership succession while continuing a major channel transformation. Whether Cisco 360 improves partner profitability, expands services opportunities or creates additional compliance burdens will depend on the program’s measurable economics and partner experience—not simply on the identity of the channel chief.
