S. Truett Cathy perfected the Original Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich in 1964, then opened the first Chick-fil-A restaurant in 1967. By 2024, the chain ranked third among U.S. restaurant companies by sales, according to Restaurant Business. The 1964 milestone is 62 years ago in 2026; the 1967 opening is 59 years ago, so the headline is a rounded reference to the brand’s founding era.
The two events behind Chick-fil-A’s origin
1946: a small grill becomes the foundation
S. Truett Cathy and his brother Ben opened The Dwarf Grill in Hapeville, Georgia, in 1946. That restaurant gave Cathy decades of operating experience before the Chick-fil-A name appeared. His decision that same year to close on Sundays established a policy the company still follows. Chick-fil-A says the closure gives employees a regular day for rest and worship; its official history describes the decision as one Cathy made in 1946. Chick-fil-A’s history page documents the policy and its origin.

1964: the sandwich is perfected
After testing hundreds of recipes, Cathy created the Original Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich in 1964. The formula was deliberately simple: a boneless chicken breast, two pickles and a toasted, buttery bun. Chick-fil-A says it has continued using that recipe. The narrow product focus made the sandwich easy to recognize and gave the company a signature item around which its menu and operations could be organized.
1967: the first Chick-fil-A restaurant
Cathy opened the first Chick-fil-A in Atlanta’s Greenbriar Mall in 1967. The 384-square-foot unit was an early food-court-style operation, and the sandwich sold for 59 cents. It was not yet the freestanding drive-through format many customers associate with the chain.

How the early format supported expansion
The mall setting provided a compact footprint and a built-in stream of shoppers. A small kitchen centered on one highly recognizable chicken sandwich could serve customers without the real-estate and construction requirements of a large standalone restaurant. Chick-fil-A later moved into freestanding units—the first opened in 1986—while retaining the product and hospitality emphasis developed in the mall stores.
This sequence matters financially. The company first refined a repeatable product and operating routine, then expanded the physical format. That reduced the number of variables an individual restaurant had to manage and helped create consistency as the store base grew.

The operating model: local operators and hospitality
Chick-fil-A describes itself as a family-owned business whose restaurants rely on local Owner-Operators. These operators are hands-on in their communities and are expected to make hospitality part of the restaurant’s identity. The company’s own description emphasizes “top-quality food, served with exceptional hospitality.”

A local-operator structure can align day-to-day decisions with the performance of a particular restaurant: staffing, service standards and community relationships are managed close to the customer. It also creates a distinctive growth model compared with chains dominated by company-owned stores or more passive franchise ownership. The trade-off is that expansion depends on selecting and supporting operators who can deliver the same service expectations in different markets.

Scale and sales: what the available numbers show
Chick-fil-A’s UK media fact sheet, published in 2025, reports more than 2,800 restaurants across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. It describes the company as the largest U.S. quick-service chicken restaurant by domestic sales. The same fact sheet gives the following figures for its referenced year:
| Measure | Reported figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. sales | More than £18.8 billion | Chick-fil-A UK media fact sheet; referenced year, compared with £16.7 billion in 2021 |
| Guests | 2.1 billion | Referenced year in the fact sheet, published 2025 |
| Chicken sandwiches sold | 527 million | Referenced year in the fact sheet, published 2025 |
| Restaurants | More than 2,800 | United States, Canada and Puerto Rico; figure reported by the fact sheet |
The fact sheet uses pounds sterling for U.S. sales, so that figure should not be casually converted into a dollar ranking without checking the source’s methodology and exchange-rate treatment. It is still useful as the company’s reported year-over-year scale indicator: sales rose from £16.7 billion in 2021 to more than £18.8 billion for the referenced year.

What “America’s third-largest restaurant chain” means
Restaurant Business reported that Chick-fil-A remained the third-largest U.S. restaurant chain by sales in its discussion of 2024 results. The report said the chain added $1.2 billion in sales during 2024. It also put a typical freestanding Chick-fil-A at about $9.3 million in 2024 sales, versus $9.4 million in 2023.

Store count, system sales, average unit volume and international presence can produce different league tables. The “third-largest” label should therefore be read as a 2024 U.S. restaurant-chain sales position, not a timeless title.

Why the strategy worked
A memorable core product
The sandwich’s four defining elements—boneless chicken breast, two pickles, a toasted buttery bun and a consistent preparation—made the product easy to remember and order. A focused signature item can simplify purchasing, training and kitchen execution while giving marketing a clear message.
Food-court beginnings, standalone scale
The 384-square-foot Greenbriar Mall restaurant demonstrated that the concept could operate in a tight footprint. The later shift to standalone restaurants supplied more room for kitchens, parking and drive-through service without abandoning the original product identity.
Service as part of the product
Chick-fil-A’s emphasis on hospitality differentiates the customer experience from a purely transaction-focused quick-service model. Local Owner-Operators give the company a mechanism for reinforcing those standards at the restaurant level rather than relying only on centralized advertising.

A fixed weekly closure
Closing every Sunday reduces the number of operating days available for sales, but it also embeds a clear labor and brand policy. The practice dates to Cathy’s 1946 decision and remains a recognizable part of the company’s identity.

What readers should take from the 60-year claim
Chick-fil-A did not become a national chain from a single opening or a single marketing campaign. Cathy spent years in restaurants before narrowing the concept to a repeatable sandwich, tested it in a small mall unit, and then expanded into standalone locations. The company’s current scale reflects that long sequence: a tightly defined product, a recognizable service model, local operating leadership and a policy of closing Sundays that has remained in place since 1946.
