It is one of four exchanges owned by CME Group Inc.; CME Group is the parent company and the broader marketplace. CME lists futures and options on futures, while CME Group’s other exchanges have their own products and rules.
What does CME stand for, and what is the exchange?
CME stands for Chicago Mercantile Exchange. CME Group says the exchange was established in Chicago in 1848. It is a designated contract market (DCM), meaning its listed products are governed by its rules and regulations. Chicago Mercantile Exchange Inc. is also a derivatives clearing organization and a wholly owned subsidiary of CME Group Inc., according to the company’s December 2025 financial statements.

In practical terms, CME is a marketplace for standardized derivatives contracts. A futures contract sets out an agreement to buy or sell an underlying asset or financial exposure at specified terms; an option on futures gives its holder rights defined by that option contract. These instruments are different from owning the underlying commodity or a company’s shares.

Is CME the same as CME Group?
No. CME is one exchange within CME Group, the parent company. CME Group comprises four exchanges: CME, CBOT, NYMEX, and COMEX. Each has its own product listings and rules, so a contract available through one CME Group exchange should not automatically be described as CME-listed.

CME Inc.’s December 2025 financial statements describe its futures and options on futures as based on interest rates, equities, foreign exchange, and agricultural commodities. CME Group’s wider marketplace includes additional categories across its exchanges, such as energy and metals. The distinction matters when checking a product’s listing, rules, trading hours, and margin: verify the specific exchange and contract rather than relying on the parent company’s name alone.
What is traded on CME and across CME Group?
CME itself describes products tied to interest rates, equity markets, foreign exchange, and agricultural commodities. Across CME Group, examples include Treasury and SOFR interest-rate products, E-mini and Micro equity-index futures, major-currency contracts, grains and livestock, WTI crude oil, Henry Hub natural gas, and gold, silver, and copper. CME Group also identifies cryptocurrency products in its broader portfolio. Those are examples of the group’s range, not a claim that every example is listed on the CME exchange or that each contract is currently available. Check the current listing before relying on a particular product.

Futures may be one of several ways to obtain exposure. Before choosing a contract, compare it with the alternatives on the dimensions that affect your situation:

- Trading and price visibility: CME Group describes listed futures as centrally traded and standardized, with prices visible during the trading day. OTC contract terms may be negotiated, and price visibility can differ.
- Margin, costs, and time horizon: Margin can provide exposure to a larger notional amount than the cash deposited, but leverage magnifies losses as well as gains. Total costs depend on the contract, broker, market data, and holding period.
- Clearing and jurisdiction: Exchange clearing is part of the listed-market structure, but rules, permissions, tax treatment, and intermediary obligations depend on the product and where you live.
- Liquidity and hours: Both vary by contract and session. A general statement about exchange hours does not establish when a particular contract trades or how liquid it is.
CME Group’s descriptions of futures’ advantages are the exchange group’s own; they are not a neutral recommendation or a guarantee that futures will be cheaper, safer, or more suitable than another route.

How are CME trades executed and cleared?
CME Inc. says trades may be executed through electronic trading platforms, open outcry, or privately negotiated transactions. After a trade, clearing helps manage the obligations between counterparties, including settlement. CME acts as a derivatives clearing organization and provides clearing, settlement, and guarantees for products cleared through CME and its affiliates.
Clearing is a risk-management part of the market structure, not a promise that trading is risk-free. Market, liquidity, operational, and default risks remain. The contract’s margin or performance-bond requirement and the broker’s requirements also matter; check the current figures for the exact product before trading.

When can you trade CME products?
CME Group says its markets are open “nearly 23 hours a day, six days a week.” That is a broad description of the group’s markets, not a schedule for every contract. Trading sessions, maintenance periods, and holiday hours can differ by product. Use the contract’s current specifications and product calendar to confirm its hours.
How do you check a contract before trading?
- Identify the exchange and product. Start from CME Group’s CME exchange page and follow its product links. Confirm whether the contract is listed on CME, CBOT, NYMEX, or COMEX.
- Read the contract specifications and calendar. Check the contract’s terms, trading hours, and applicable dates in the current product information. Do not assume that a related contract has identical terms.
- Check performance bonds or margins. Use the current figures linked from the exchange’s product information. Margin requirements can change, and the amount required by an intermediary may differ from the exchange figure.
- Review rules and market information. CME’s exchange page also links to rules, settlement data, volume reports, daily bulletins, and intraday and settlement quotes. Use the relevant official pages for up-to-date details.
- Confirm access through an intermediary. Futures access is generally arranged through a broker or futures commission merchant (FCM). Availability and permissions depend on the intermediary, product, and your jurisdiction.
How does CME market data access work?
CME Group describes data coverage across seven major asset classes, from top-of-book quotes through full depth-of-book, with delivery options that include APIs, direct connections or co-location, CME Direct, and distributors. Its data page says its historical archive contains “40+ years” of data; that is CME Group’s own description. The available content, latency, delivery method, and rights are not necessarily the same across channels, and data access should not be assumed to be free.
Best Value
CME Group outlines a licensing process: define the data requirements, complete an Information License Agreement or update an existing agreement, and then access data through the chosen connection. For current coverage and access details, consult CME Group’s futures and options data page.
