A sound Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE: CCL) versus Royal Caribbean Group (NYSE: RCL) comparison aligns reporting dates and accounting definitions, then examines demand, pricing, unit costs, debt, liquidity, fleet investment, capacity growth, brand mix and finally same-date market valuation. Carnival’s fiscal year ends November 30, while Royal Caribbean reports on a calendar year, and their fleet and non-GAAP measures are not identical. Royal Caribbean’s latest figures in this review are company-reported Q2 2026 results and dated 2026 guidance, not a guarantee of future returns.
What you are actually comparing
CCL and RCL are both large cruise operators, but they are not interchangeable businesses. Their reporting calendars, fleet scopes, brands, joint-venture interests and definitions of capacity differ. Comparing one company’s November year-end with the other’s December year-end can make growth or leverage appear better or worse simply because the measurement dates do not match.

Business mix and brand exposure
Carnival’s portfolio
Carnival’s 2025 annual report identifies eight cruise-line brands: Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Seabourn, AIDA, Costa, P&O Cruises and Cunard. It reports North America and Europe operating segments, plus a Cruise Support segment and an Alaska tour business. At November 30, 2025, the fleet table showed 63 North America ships and 31 Europe ships, 94 in total.
The portfolio spans contemporary, premium and luxury offerings and several geographic markets. That breadth can diversify customer demand and currency exposure, but it also means consolidated results blend different pricing, itinerary and cost profiles. A change in the mix of brands or regions can move company-wide yields without a uniform change in every ship.
Royal Caribbean’s portfolio
Royal Caribbean’s 2025 Form 10-K describes Royal Caribbean as competing in contemporary family and premium segments, Celebrity Cruises as a premium brand, and Silversea as ultra-luxury and expedition. Those are the company’s descriptions, not an independent ranking of brand performance. The group also holds a 50% joint-venture interest in TUI Cruises GmbH, which operates partner brands. The wholly owned global brands and the joint venture should be separated when you assess fleet size, earnings and capital commitments.
Recommended Free Tools
Because Carnival’s headline ship count includes its broad set of wholly owned brands while Royal Caribbean reports wholly owned brands alongside a joint-venture interest, a simple “ships per company” comparison does not measure the same economic exposure.
Step 1: Align periods, currencies and definitions
Start a comparison worksheet with the exact period end, currency, consolidation scope and metric definition for every number. Carnival’s November 30 fiscal year-end and Royal Caribbean’s December 31 calendar year-end are only five weeks apart, but a quarter with a holiday sailing pattern, a ship delivery or a major refinancing can make that difference material.
- Use the same quarter or trailing period where possible, and label any unavoidable date mismatch.
- Separate reported GAAP revenue, operating income and net income from adjusted or “excluding” measures.
- Record whether capacity is stated as passenger capacity, berths, available passenger cruise days or another operating denominator.
- Check whether a figure includes joint ventures, chartered ships or only wholly owned operations.
- Keep guidance in a separate column from realized results and preserve the date on which management issued it.
Carnival’s two capacity figures illustrate why the date matters: its annual report gives 272,380 passenger capacity at November 30, 2025 and 272,460 at December 31, 2025. Neither number should be presented as an undated current fleet total.

Step 2: Test demand, pricing and onboard spending
For each company, examine passenger yields, ticket pricing, onboard revenue, occupancy and booking trends. Revenue growth can come from more ships and available passenger cruise days rather than stronger pricing on an unchanged fleet. Separate the contribution from capacity, price, occupancy and onboard spending instead of treating total revenue growth as a single demand signal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesQuestions to answer in each filing
- Did ticket revenue per passenger cruise day rise, fall or remain stable?
- Did occupancy improve because of pricing power, promotional discounts or a change in itinerary mix?
- Are onboard revenues per guest increasing, and are those sales exposed to the same consumer pressures as ticket demand?
- What do management’s booking comments refer to: cumulative bookings, a specific sailing period, or a comparison with an unusual prior year?
Royal Caribbean’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q said second-quarter revenue increased by $294 million and first-half revenue by $747 million versus the corresponding 2025 periods, chiefly because of increased capacity and higher pricing. The same filing said operating expenses increased chiefly because of higher capacity. That is evidence of the drivers management identified for those periods, not proof that every added ship will earn an equivalent return.
Read booking commentary alongside realized occupancy and yield. Bookings are forward-looking and can be cancelled, repriced or affected by itinerary changes; reported revenue and net income are historical outcomes.
Step 3: Compare unit economics without mixing definitions
Cruise operators commonly discuss revenue per available passenger cruise day and net cruise costs per available passenger cruise day, sometimes with and without fuel. These measures can help distinguish pricing and mix from cost control, but they are company-defined non-GAAP operating metrics.
| Metric | How to use it | Guardrail |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue per available passenger cruise day | Tests monetization of capacity through ticket and onboard revenue. | Match the denominator, period, currency and inclusion of joint ventures. |
| Net cruise cost per available passenger cruise day | Shows operating-cost performance after specified revenue offsets. | Compare both the reported figure and the company’s reconciliation; fuel treatment can change the result. |
| Adjusted EPS | Useful for following management’s chosen earnings view over time. | It is non-GAAP. Review the reconciliation and do not call it GAAP EPS. |
Royal Caribbean explicitly cautions that its non-GAAP measures may not be comparable with similarly named measures used by other companies. Before ranking CCL and RCL on a unit metric, read each reconciliation and recreate a like-for-like version where possible.
Step 4: Examine debt, liquidity and refinancing risk
Large cruise ships are long-lived assets financed with substantial debt, so the balance sheet can matter as much as the income statement. Compare total debt, net debt, cash, undrawn revolver capacity, interest expense, covenant terms and the maturity schedule on the same date.

Royal Caribbean’s disclosed liquidity and maturities
Royal Caribbean reported $7.2 billion of liquidity at December 31, 2025, including cash and undrawn revolving credit capacity. Its January 29, 2026 results and guidance release listed scheduled maturities of $3.2 billion in 2026, $2.6 billion in 2027, $3.2 billion in 2028, $1.1 billion in 2029 and $1.1 billion in 2030.
| Year | Scheduled Royal Caribbean maturities |
|---|---|
| 2026 | $3.2 billion |
| 2027 | $2.6 billion |
| 2028 | $3.2 billion |
| 2029 | $1.1 billion |
| 2030 | $1.1 billion |
Liquidity is not the same as cash on hand when it includes undrawn credit. Check borrowing costs, collateral, covenants and access to capital markets before concluding that a large liquidity number eliminates refinancing risk. For Carnival, retrieve the corresponding debt and liquidity figures from the same reporting date and use the company’s definitions rather than substituting a different date.
Step 5: Separate capacity growth from capital intensity
Capacity growth can increase revenue opportunities while adding crew, fuel, maintenance, port and marketing costs. New ships also require large, committed payments years before their first sailing. Compare committed newbuilds, expected delivery dates, maintenance spending, destination projects and financing sources.
Royal Caribbean’s January 29, 2026 release estimated approximately $5 billion of 2026 capital expenditure, predominantly for new ships. It projected 2026 capacity growth of 6.7% versus 2025, followed by expected capacity changes of 4% in 2027, 6% in 2028 and 7% in 2029. These are dated company estimates and forecasts, not realized outcomes.
- Ask whether demand and pricing can absorb the additional berths at acceptable occupancy.
- Check the timing of ship deliveries against debt maturities and cash generation.
- Distinguish firm shipyard contracts from options or management intentions.
- Measure return on invested capital over a full sailing cycle rather than one launch quarter.
Do the same for Carnival using its latest annual report and Q2 2026 filing. The available Carnival materials here do not provide a complete same-period set of Q2 2026 operating and capital figures, so a numerical side-by-side capex or capacity-growth ranking would be misleading until those documents are reviewed.
Step 6: Evaluate the customer and geographic mix
Brand positioning affects pricing, itinerary demand and resilience across economic cycles. Royal Caribbean says its brands cover contemporary family and premium cruising, premium cruising through Celebrity, and ultra-luxury and expedition travel through Silversea. Carnival’s brands span mass-market, premium and luxury propositions across North American and European segments, with an Alaska tour operation and Cruise Support segment.

Map each company’s exposure by region, currency, customer income and itinerary. A stronger dollar can affect translated results and European demand; port availability, geopolitical events and weather can disrupt particular routes. Diversification is not automatically superior: a broader portfolio can also add operational complexity and expose results to more currencies and regulatory regimes.

Royal Caribbean’s July 28, 2026 earnings release reported Q2 2026 GAAP EPS of $4.20 and adjusted EPS of $4.21. It raised FY 2026 adjusted EPS guidance to $17.73–$17.87. The release is available at the SEC-filed announcement.
| Royal Caribbean measure | Reported amount | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Q2 2026 EPS | $4.20 | Company-reported GAAP EPS for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. |
| Q2 2026 adjusted EPS | $4.21 | Company-reported non-GAAP measure. |
| FY 2026 adjusted EPS guidance | $17.73–$17.87 | Management’s July 28, 2026 outlook; not a realized result or guarantee. |
| Q2 2026 net income | $1.1 billion | Versus $1.2 billion in Q2 2025, according to the Q2 2026 Form 10-Q. |
| Six months ended June 30, 2026 net income | $2.1 billion | Versus $1.9 billion in the corresponding 2025 period. |
Chairman and CEO Jason Liberty said, “The strong second quarter performance demonstrates the continued strength of our brands, the appeal of our vacation experiences, and the momentum in our business.” This is management’s characterization, not independent verification of brand strength or future momentum.
Do not place Royal Caribbean’s adjusted EPS guidance beside a Carnival GAAP EPS figure and call the higher number the better business. First align period, share count, tax effects and adjustment policies; then compare operating cash flow and earnings quality.
Step 8: Add valuation only with same-date market data
A stock can have stronger operations and still be a poor investment if its price already discounts that performance. To compare valuation, collect CCL and RCL closing prices on the same date, diluted share counts, market capitalization, debt, cash and trailing or forward earnings and cash-flow measures.

| Valuation input | Calculation or question |
|---|---|
| Market capitalization | Same-date share price multiplied by diluted shares outstanding. |
| Enterprise value | Market capitalization plus debt and other debt-like claims, less cash; define inclusions consistently. |
| Forward P/E | Price divided by a clearly identified forward EPS estimate; state whose estimate and date. |
| EV/EBITDA or EV/operating cash flow | Use matching periods and reconcile cruise-specific adjustments. |
| Free-cash-flow yield | Define maintenance versus growth capital spending before interpreting the yield. |
The evidence summarized here establishes no same-date CCL or RCL share price, market capitalization, P/E, EV/EBITDA, dividend yield, analyst consensus or return forecast. Therefore it cannot support a claim that either ticker is currently cheaper or offers the higher expected return. Add current market data and the latest filings at publication time before making that judgment.
A practical comparison worksheet
Use one row per metric and retain the source date in the cell note. A useful worksheet follows this order:
- Set the date rule: choose a common quarter, trailing twelve months or fiscal year and flag Carnival’s November and Royal Caribbean’s December year-ends.
- Build the operating block: revenue, occupancy, passenger yield, onboard revenue and available passenger cruise days.
- Reconcile unit costs: capture each company’s definition, fuel treatment and non-GAAP reconciliation.
- Build the financing block: cash, total debt, net debt, interest expense, undrawn facilities, covenants and maturities.
- Map capacity and commitments: ships, berths or passenger capacity, deliveries, capex and destination investments.
- Assess mix: brands, regions, customer segments, joint ventures and ancillary operations.
- Add valuation last: use same-date prices and clearly labeled trailing or forward denominators.
- Run sensitivity cases: test lower pricing, slower occupancy, higher fuel or interest costs, delivery delays and currency moves.
This process prevents one attractive metric—such as a quarter’s EPS or a larger fleet—from becoming a substitute for a full investment case.

Risks both companies disclose
Carnival’s annual report and Royal Caribbean’s filings identify overlapping risks. They are issuer-disclosed exposures, not a probability ranking or prediction that any particular event will occur.
- Demand and spending: recession, changing vacation preferences or weaker passenger and onboard spending can reduce revenue.
- Fuel, currency and interest rates: fuel prices, foreign-exchange movements and floating-rate debt can pressure costs and earnings.
- Health, weather and disasters: disease outbreaks, hurricanes and other natural events can cancel sailings or close ports.
- Geopolitics and port access: conflict, sanctions, travel restrictions or unavailable ports can force itinerary changes.
- Shipbuilding and execution: construction defects, shipyard delays, late deliveries or cost overruns can defer revenue while financing costs continue.
- Industry capacity: too many new berths can intensify price competition and raise marketing and operating costs.
- Regulation and insurance: environmental, safety, labor and tax rules, along with insurance availability and cost, can change economics.
- Financing: large maturities and capital commitments make refinancing conditions and liquidity important during weak travel markets.
What a balanced conclusion looks like
Choose the stock only after deciding which exposure you want. Carnival offers a larger reported fleet and a broad set of brands and regions, while Royal Caribbean reports a smaller wholly owned fleet, premium and ultra-luxury positioning, a 50% TUI Cruises joint-venture interest, and detailed 2026 capacity and capex guidance. Those differences affect growth, cyclicality, capital needs and the way consolidated numbers should be read.
A disciplined investor compares like periods and definitions, tests whether pricing is outrunning costs, checks debt against liquidity and maturities, evaluates ship commitments and capacity absorption, and then asks whether the market price compensates for the risks. Without current, same-date valuation data for both tickers, the responsible conclusion is that the comparison method is established but a present-day “better buy” ranking is not.
