For the lowest financing cost, save toward the car and pay cash—provided you can wait and still keep a proper emergency reserve. An auto loan costs more overall because of interest, but it gets you a vehicle now and preserves some cash. Leasing can produce the smallest monthly payment, yet rent charges, fees, mileage limits, wear charges and the lack of an owned asset can make it costlier over a longer period.
There is no universal winner. Compare the same vehicle, purchase or lease date, annual mileage and end date, then count every cash outflow and the value of what you own at the end.

The short answer: choose by total cost, timing and flexibility
A cash purchase generally minimizes the transaction’s financing cost because you do not borrow money or pay lease rent charges. Consumer.gov explains that borrowing raises the total price through interest. The trade-off is waiting while you save and tying up money that could otherwise remain liquid or earn a return.

You finish the term with an owned vehicle, but a longer term can increase lifetime interest and leave you owing more than the car is worth for part of the loan.

A lease is a contract for the vehicle’s use, not a conventional path to ownership. The payment covers the vehicle’s expected depreciation during the term, a rent charge and fees. Typical mileage allowances are 10,000 to 15,000 miles per year, according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), with extra charges possible for miles and wear. Leasing can work for drivers who want a newer car, drive predictable low miles and change vehicles regularly; it is often a poor fit for high-mileage or long-term ownership.
What you are paying for in each option
Saving first, then buying with cash
You set a target amount, save it on a schedule and pay the negotiated out-the-door price when you buy. The target should include the vehicle price, sales tax, title, registration and unavoidable dealer or government fees. After purchase, you bear insurance, fuel, maintenance and repairs, but there is no lender payoff or prepayment restriction. You can sell whenever you choose and keep the resale proceeds.
The economic cost is not literally zero beyond the purchase price: cash has an opportunity cost. Money used for the car cannot remain in an interest-bearing account or be used for another goal. Treat that foregone return as a consideration, not as a reason to ignore the absence of loan interest.

The lender advances part of the purchase price and you repay principal plus interest over a set number of payments. Your contract may also include taxes, fees or optional products financed into the balance. Compare the amount borrowed, APR, term, monthly payment and total amount paid; these are the CFPB’s core comparison fields.
The vehicle is normally collateral. Missing payments can lead to late fees, credit damage and repossession. Early in the schedule, a larger share of each payment goes to interest. If depreciation outpaces principal reduction, selling or trading can require you to bring cash to cover negative equity.

Leasing for a fixed term
A lessor buys the vehicle and you pay for its use for a specified term. The lease worksheet should show the negotiated capitalized cost, any capitalized-cost reduction, residual value, rent charge (often expressed as a money factor), taxes, acquisition fee, monthly payment and disposition fee. At the end, you generally return the vehicle, buy it for the stated residual or buyout amount, or enter a new contract.
Lease contracts commonly specify an annual-mileage allowance and a standard for excess wear. Exceeding the allowance or returning the car with damage can create a bill at turn-in. Ending the lease early can be expensive because the contract’s remaining obligations and vehicle value are settled under its early-termination formula.

Make an apples-to-apples cost comparison
Choose one vehicle, horizon and end date
Start with the same trim, equipment and negotiated price for all three scenarios. Pick an end date—for example, the date you expect to replace the car or the date five years from the initial decision. A three-year lease compared with a five-year loan is not a fair comparison unless you also model what happens in years four and five.
Estimate annual miles and the vehicle’s condition at the end date. Ownership allows unlimited miles, but higher mileage and wear generally reduce resale proceeds. A lease’s mileage and wear charges are contractual, so your estimate should use the actual allowance and fee schedule rather than a generic assumption.
Count every cash flow
| Cost or value | Cash purchase | Auto loan | Lease |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash due at signing | Full out-the-door price, unless a portion is financed | Down payment plus taxes and fees not financed | First payment, security deposit if required, acquisition fee, taxes and other stated charges |
| Monthly financing charge | None | Principal and interest payment | Depreciation charge plus rent charge and applicable taxes |
| Taxes, title and registration | Include the amounts due in your jurisdiction | Include financed and cash-paid amounts | Include the treatment shown on the lease worksheet; rules vary by jurisdiction |
| Insurance, fuel and maintenance | Pay throughout ownership | Pay throughout ownership; the lender may require specified coverage | Pay throughout the lease; the contract may specify maintenance or insurance requirements |
| End-of-period value or bill | Subtract realistic resale proceeds | Subtract realistic resale proceeds after the loan is paid off | Add disposition, excess-mileage and wear charges, or add the buyout amount if you purchase |
| Opportunity cost of cash | Consider the return the purchase money could have earned | Consider the return on cash retained instead of used as a down payment | Consider the return on cash retained instead of paid upfront |
For an ownership calculation, use total cash paid through end date − expected resale value. For a lease, use all payments + upfront fees + expected mileage/wear/disposition charges; add the contractual buyout if you plan to keep the car. Include insurance, fuel and maintenance in each case when the purpose is to compare the full cost of transportation rather than only the financing.

Build a car savings plan that does not endanger your finances
Set the target and timeline
- Get an out-the-door price in writing, including the vehicle, destination charges, taxes, title, registration and dealer fees.
- Choose the purchase month and divide the cash target by the number of months remaining. The result is the minimum planned monthly deposit before accounting for interest earned or changes in the vehicle price.
- Keep a separate emergency reserve. Do not drain the reserve to make a cash purchase; an unexpected repair, job loss or medical bill can turn a paid-off car into a new high-cost debt problem.
- Put the monthly amount in your budget as an expense. Consumer.gov specifically recommends treating savings for a large goal such as a car as a recurring budget item.
- Recheck the target every few months for insurance changes, tax and fee updates, and a realistic replacement vehicle. If the required deposit is unaffordable, extend the timeline, lower the vehicle target or compare financing rather than skipping the reserve.
When saving is financially stronger
Saving first has the clearest advantage when you can wait, the vehicle you own now is reliable, and the expected loan APR is materially higher than the after-tax return on your safe savings. It also gives you negotiating flexibility: you can focus on the out-the-door price rather than accepting a dealer’s preferred payment structure. The drawback is that prices, availability and your transportation needs can change while you wait.

Get outside offers before discussing dealer financing
Request written quotes from at least three sources, including a bank or credit union and the dealer. Consumer.gov recommends recording the APR, payment, number of payments and total amount paid, then comparing offers. Ask whether the quoted rate is fixed, whether there is a prepayment penalty, and which fees or optional products are included.
Use the same amount financed and term when comparing lenders. A quote with a lower payment may simply stretch repayment over more months. The FTC’s guidance is to focus on the written out-the-door price and total cost, not only the monthly payment.
Understand term length and negative equity
A longer term lowers the required monthly payment but usually increases total interest and keeps the lien in place longer. It can also prolong the period in which the loan balance exceeds the car’s market value. If you trade before the loan is paid, any unpaid balance may be rolled into the next loan, raising that vehicle’s cost.
Make a larger down payment only after preserving your emergency reserve. Extra cash reduces the amount financed and interest, but putting every liquid dollar into the car recreates the risk that the savings plan was meant to prevent.

Illustrative loan arithmetic
In a 2023 CFPB illustration, a $20,000 loan at 4.75% over three years produced payments of about $597 per month and total interest of about $1,498. That is an example, not a market quote: your APR, taxes, fees, credit profile and term determine the actual figures. Use the lender’s disclosure and an amortization schedule for your decision.

Read the worksheet line by line
Ask for the capitalized cost (the negotiated vehicle price plus permitted additions), capitalized-cost reduction, residual value, term, money factor or rent charge, acquisition fee, monthly tax, mileage allowance and buyout price. A low advertised payment can depend on a large amount due at signing, a short mileage allowance or a manufacturer incentive that may not apply to your situation.
Compare the lease’s total scheduled payments and upfront charges with the cost of buying the same vehicle. The Federal Reserve and CFPB both describe the payment as depreciation during the term plus rent charges; it is not simply interest on a loan balance.
Price mileage and condition honestly
Typical allowances of 10,000–15,000 miles per year are not universal. If your driving is unpredictable or exceeds the allowance, obtain the per-mile overage rate and calculate the likely bill. Also ask for the contract’s wear definition and examples. Tires, glass, dents, upholstery and missing equipment can be assessed differently by lessors.
Decide what happens at the end
Returning the vehicle transfers resale risk to the lessor, but you remain responsible for contractual charges and a possible disposition fee. Buying the vehicle replaces those charges with the stated residual or purchase-option price, plus taxes and financing if you borrow that amount. Compare that buyout with the car’s expected market value at the same date; do not assume the residual will be a bargain.

Which choice fits common situations?
You need transportation immediately
If delaying would make you lose a job, education opportunity or essential medical access, waiting to save may cost more than a reasonably priced loan. Obtain preapproval, choose the shortest affordable term and keep a reserve for repairs and insurance. A lease may deliver a low payment, but its mileage and end-of-term rules are risky when your driving needs are uncertain.
You drive modest, predictable miles and change cars often
A lease can be a rational convenience choice when the allowance matches your actual miles, you maintain the vehicle carefully and you value a predictable replacement cycle. Evaluate several consecutive lease terms, not only the first three-year payment, because repeated acquisition fees and the absence of an owned asset affect the long-run cost.
You drive a lot or keep cars for many years
Ownership usually provides more flexibility. You can exceed lease mileage limits without a contractual per-mile bill and continue driving after the loan is paid. A cash purchase or a loan with an affordable term lets you keep the vehicle until replacement makes economic sense.

You have cash but may need it soon
Do not compare the cash price with a loan in isolation. Estimate the value of retaining the money for a known near-term need, then compare that value with the loan’s guaranteed interest cost. If using cash would leave you without an emergency reserve, financing a less expensive vehicle—or waiting—is safer than paying cash for the original target.
A seven-step decision workflow
- Set the target vehicle. Obtain an all-in out-the-door price, including taxes and fees.
- Estimate use. Record annual miles, intended holding period, insurance, fuel, maintenance and a realistic emergency reserve.
- Collect loan quotes. Get at least three and record APR, amount financed, term, payment, total payments, add-ons and prepayment terms.
- Collect lease worksheets. Record capitalized cost, money factor or rent charge, residual, acquisition and disposition fees, mileage allowance, excess-mileage rate, wear standard and buyout.
- Model the cash plan. Divide the cash target by months until purchase and confirm the deposit fits your budget while preserving the reserve.
- Compare at one end date. For ownership, subtract realistic resale value; for a lease, add every payment, upfront fee, expected mileage or wear bill and any buyout.
- Choose for both math and life. Select the option with an acceptable net cost that also fits your liquidity needs, mileage, ownership preference and required timing.
Pitfalls that make a “cheap” deal expensive
- Shopping by payment: A dealer can lower the payment by extending the term or increasing the amount financed. Negotiate vehicle price and financing separately.
- Ignoring the out-the-door figure: Add-ons, taxes and registration can change the amount you must pay even when the advertised price is unchanged.
- Using a down payment to hide negative equity: Find the existing payoff and the vehicle’s actual trade value before signing. Do not roll an uncovered balance into a new contract without counting it in total cost.
- Spending the emergency reserve: A paid-off car is not a substitute for cash needed for rent, health costs or an income interruption.
- Underestimating lease miles: Review odometer records and commuting, not an optimistic guess. Obtain the exact excess-mileage rate in writing.
- Assuming a lease has no end costs: Budget for disposition, damage, missing equipment and taxes on a buyout where applicable.
- Comparing different cars or periods: A lower payment on a cheaper trim or a three-year lease cannot answer whether a five-year ownership plan costs less.
- Skipping lender shopping: A dealer-arranged loan may be convenient, but an outside preapproval gives you a benchmark for APR and total amount paid.
What to put in your worksheet before signing
Create one line for every item below and enter the contract’s actual figure or your documented estimate:
- Vehicle selling price and every dealer-installed add-on
- Sales tax, title, registration and filing charges
- Down payment or cash due at signing
- Amount financed, APR, term, number of payments and total payments
- Lease capitalized cost, residual, rent charge, acquisition fee and disposition fee
- Annual mileage allowance, per-mile overage rate and wear standard
- Insurance premiums, fuel, scheduled maintenance and likely repairs
- Expected resale proceeds, loan payoff or lease buyout at the chosen end date
- Interest or investment return you give up by using cash, after allowing for taxes and risk
Once these fields are filled for the same vehicle and horizon, the cheapest option is the one with the lowest net cost you can meet without violating your reserve or transportation requirements. The lowest advertised monthly payment is not a substitute for that calculation.
