Capital.com is a real, regulated online trading platform—not an obvious scam. The important qualification is that most of what it promotes to retail traders is CFD trading. However, regulation does not make CFD trading safe or profitable. Capital.com is not a savings account, wealth manager, or guaranteed-income service. A legitimate broker can still offer a product that is unsuitable for a beginner.

The brand name alone is not enough. When you open an account, read the legal-entity information in the client agreement, account-opening documents, or website footer. Then check that entity directly on the regulator’s register.

- Open the official Capital.com website by typing the address into your browser rather than following an unsolicited message.
- Find the legal entity named in the account agreement.
- Search the FCA, CySEC, ASIC, or relevant local regulator’s official register—not a sponsored search result.
- Compare the register’s website, phone number, trading name, and permissions with the details contacting you.
- Do not send money to an “agent” who promises to recover losses, manage your account, or unlock a withdrawal.
This last point matters because scammers often impersonate genuine brokers. A WhatsApp or Telegram account using Capital.com’s logo is not proof that it is connected to Capital.com.
Fees: the advertised zero commission is not the whole cost
Capital.com commonly advertises commission-free CFD trading. That generally means there is no separate commission on many CFD transactions; it does not mean trading is free.
Check the applicable fee schedule for:
- Spread: the difference between the buy and sell price. You usually begin a trade with this cost.
- Overnight funding: a financing adjustment for holding many leveraged CFD positions beyond the daily cut-off.
- Currency conversion: a charge or exchange-rate markup when your account currency differs from the instrument or payment currency.
- Inactivity or account charges: these can vary by legal entity and account type, so read the current tariff rather than relying on an old review.
- Guaranteed-stop charges: if available for the instrument and jurisdiction, a guaranteed stop may carry a separate premium.
Before placing a trade, look at the order ticket and the platform’s cost information. A position held for weeks can accumulate financing charges even if the quoted spread is competitive.
Safety of deposits and account protections
Regulated brokers generally hold retail client money separately from the firm’s own operating funds, subject to the rules of the relevant jurisdiction. This is designed to protect client money if the firm fails; it does not protect you from a losing trade.
UK retail clients may receive protections such as leverage limits, margin close-out rules, restrictions on incentives, and negative-balance protection under FCA rules. Protections can change when you are onboarded by an overseas entity, elect professional-client status, or trade a product outside the relevant retail regime. Professional accounts can receive higher leverage but may lose important retail safeguards.

Most retail CFD accounts lose money
Broker risk warnings commonly state that a high percentage of retail CFD accounts lose money. This is not a technicality. Leverage, spread, financing costs, and rapid price movements make short-term trading difficult even before a trader’s strategy is considered.

A CFD broker provides its own executable quotes, normally based on external market data and liquidity. Prices can move quickly around economic announcements, and spreads may widen. Stop-loss orders are not guaranteed to execute at the exact level during a gap or extreme volatility.
Withdrawals can trigger verification
Identity and source-of-funds checks are normal for regulated financial firms. A request for proof of identity, address, or payment method is not automatically evidence of a scam. The warning sign is someone demanding an extra “tax,” “release fee,” or cryptocurrency payment before allowing a withdrawal.
