Canva announced on February 23, 2026, that it had acquired two startups: Cavalry, a UK-based professional 2D animation company, and MangoAI, a startup focused on using data intelligence and reinforcement learning to improve video-ad performance.
The deals extend Canva beyond template-based design in two directions: deeper professional creative production through Cavalry, and marketing intelligence through MangoAI. They also build on Canva’s 2024 acquisition of Affinity and its planned acquisition of MagicBrief.

What Canva acquired
Cavalry: professional 2D animation
Cavalry makes software for professional motion designers rather than offering only simplified template animation. Its workflow emphasizes procedural and systems-based animation, repeatability, rigging, data-driven sequences, text animation, real-time previews, and Lottie export.

Those capabilities can support advertising, marketing, gaming, generative art, and other motion-design work. Canva says the Cavalry team will remain involved in the product’s direction and that Cavalry will retain its professional focus.

As of August 18, 2026, Cavalry’s official site described the individual product as free, with versions for macOS and Windows and support for Apple silicon and Intel. Enterprise single sign-on is associated with Canva Enterprise or Canva Districts accounts. That does not mean Cavalry’s full professional workflow is already built into Canva’s standard editor.

MangoAI: performance-focused marketing intelligence
MangoAI is not primarily another consumer-facing image or video generator. Canva describes its technology as combining data intelligence and reinforcement learning to connect creative output with advertising results.

Canva also announced two leadership appointments linked to the deal: Nirmal Govind, formerly Netflix’s vice president of data science and engineering, becomes Canva’s first chief algorithms officer, while Vinith Misra joins Canva’s Research Lab as reinforcement-learning lead.
The intended model is a feedback loop: identify an opportunity, create or adapt content, deploy it, measure results, and use those results to improve subsequent creative. That is materially different from adding an AI button that merely generates an asset.

Why Canva wants animation
Canva’s strategic gap is increasingly visible as marketing and communication become more video-oriented. Teams need motion assets for social campaigns, product launches, advertising, presentations, and digital storytelling, while professional designers often move between separate applications for illustration, layout, animation, collaboration, brand management, and publishing.
Canva says Affinity provides professional photo, vector, and layout tools, while Cavalry adds motion editing. The intended result is a broader professional suite covering static design and animation.

That is a strategic direction, not evidence that Canva has already replaced Adobe After Effects or achieved feature parity with every specialist motion tool. Cavalry’s procedural 2D workflow may be valuable alongside Canva and Affinity without becoming the same product.
Why Canva wants marketing intelligence
Canva is also moving from content creation toward content performance. In the traditional workflow, a team creates an asset in Canva, exports it, publishes it elsewhere, and evaluates results in separate systems. The MangoAI strategy aims to connect more of those steps.
MagicBrief is an important part of that plan. In its MagicBrief announcement, Canva said the Australian creative-intelligence company’s tools had analyzed more than $6 billion in advertising spend. Canva also said its 10-person Sydney team would join the company, while MagicBrief would initially continue operating independently.

MagicBrief is positioned around understanding which formats, messages, and creative strategies perform well. MangoAI extends that concept toward automated optimization, particularly for video advertising. Together, the companies support Canva’s stated ambition to connect creation, deployment, measurement, and optimization.
That ambition should not be confused with a complete media-buying, analytics, CRM, or attribution platform. Better automated optimization still depends on reliable campaign data, platform access, and an appropriate definition of success. Improving click-through rate, for example, does not automatically improve profitability, conversion quality, brand lift, or customer lifetime value.

This is Canva’s intended architecture, not a fully delivered product stack. The public announcements do not specify which capabilities are already integrated, which remain standalone, or when particular integrations will ship.
What the deals mean for users
Casual Canva users
Over time, Canva users may gain more sophisticated animation tools, stronger video-ad creation, and more ways to adapt content across channels. However, there is no basis for assuming that every Cavalry feature is already available in Canva’s regular editor.
Motion designers
Cavalry could give motion designers a path into a broader ecosystem that combines specialist animation with Affinity’s static-design tools and Canva’s collaboration features. Its procedural, repeatable workflow may be especially useful for data-driven or variant-heavy work.

The trade-off is uncertainty around long-term product independence, licensing, account requirements, and integration priorities. Canva has said that everything free in Cavalry would remain free, but enterprise administration and identity features can involve Canva’s business products.
Affinity users
Affinity users gain a clearer potential path from photo, vector, and layout work into motion. That could make the wider Canva ecosystem more relevant to professional designers who do not need Adobe’s entire application portfolio.
Marketers and agencies
The MangoAI and MagicBrief strategy could reduce handoffs between creative production and campaign analysis. Teams may eventually be able to produce more variants, maintain brand controls, and use performance data to guide the next round of creative.
They will still need advertising platforms, analytics systems, attribution models, and media-buying expertise. Automated learning can find patterns in campaign data, but it cannot replace positioning, storytelling, audience strategy, or commercial judgment.
Enterprise buyers
Enterprises should evaluate data access, privacy, attribution, account administration, export options, and integration with existing systems before treating Canva as a replacement for their entire marketing stack. The announcements do not yet provide final answers on those issues.

Does this threaten Adobe?
It increases strategic pressure on Adobe, but it is not an immediate Adobe replacement. Canva is now targeting several areas associated with Adobe: professional image, vector, and layout work through Affinity; motion design through Cavalry; AI-assisted creation; collaboration and brand governance; and marketing-content measurement.
Adobe continues to offer specialist applications such as After Effects, Premiere, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Animate, supported by established file formats, plug-ins, scripts, templates, training, and agency workflows. On Adobe’s US pricing page, checked August 18, 2026, After Effects, Illustrator, and Animate were each listed at US$22.99 per month under annual, billed-monthly individual plans. Creative Cloud Pro was listed at US$99.99 per month per license under annual, billed-monthly billing. Prices vary by country, plan type, billing term, and promotion; these figures are not directly comparable with every Canva or Cavalry offering.
The more important competitive question is whether Canva can provide enough professional control while making collaboration, publishing, and marketing deployment simpler. It does not need to copy every Adobe feature to win teams that value an integrated workflow.
Which tool fits which workflow?
- Choose Canva when collaboration, speed, brand control, and multi-format publishing matter more than specialist production depth.
- Consider Cavalry for procedural 2D motion, repeatable animation, data-driven sequences, and real-time professional workflows.
- Consider Affinity for professional photo, vector, and layout work in a desktop-oriented alternative to Adobe’s static-design applications.
- Choose Adobe when projects depend on mature compositing, complex motion graphics, plug-ins, expressions, established file formats, or long-running agency pipelines.
- Consider Blender when an open-source tool and broad 3D capability matter. Blender is not a direct Cavalry substitute: it serves a broader 3D and animation workflow.
The central trade-off is integration versus specialization. A connected platform can reduce tool sprawl and handoffs, while dedicated applications may offer more control for demanding work.
What remains unknown
Canva’s announcements establish the acquisitions and their broad strategic goals, but not their full commercial or technical details. Still unknown are:
- Purchase prices, transaction structures, revenue, customer counts, and valuations.
- Exact integration dates and which features will become user-facing Canva products.
- Whether Cavalry will remain a fully independent application over the long term.
- Whether MangoAI’s capabilities will appear as a standalone product, Canva feature, or internal technology.
- How Canva will handle advertising data, privacy, attribution, and model training.
- Whether one subscription will cover Canva, Affinity, and Cavalry.
- Whether existing Cavalry users will need Canva accounts for future features.
- Whether MagicBrief will remain independently available or be absorbed into Canva’s marketing products.
Those questions matter because an acquisition announcement describes direction, not a finished product or guaranteed customer experience.
Bottom line
Canva is not merely buying an animation app and an AI marketing startup. It is assembling a workflow that could link professional asset creation, brand-controlled collaboration, publishing, advertising intelligence, and performance optimization.

Cavalry strengthens the production side of that strategy; MangoAI strengthens the measurement and optimization side; Affinity supplies a professional static-design foundation; and MagicBrief adds creative intelligence. The opportunity is significant, but the final integrated product has not arrived yet. Users should judge Canva’s strategy by the quality of the eventual integrations, controls, data practices, and specialist workflows—not by the acquisition announcements alone.
