Compare two or three live quotes at the same time, check the exchange-rate markup and every possible deduction, then choose the quote with the highest confirmed amount received.
What “cost-effective” means for a Canada-to-U.S. transfer
Your real cost is the difference between the CAD you spend and the USD the recipient ultimately receives. A provider can advertise a small transfer fee while embedding a larger cost in its exchange rate. Conversely, a service with a visible fee can still deliver more dollars if it offers a stronger CAD-to-USD rate.

Use this comparison:
- Amount paid: the CAD debited from you, including any funding or card charge.
- Exchange rate: the CAD-to-USD rate applied to your transaction, not a generic rate shown elsewhere.
- Transfer fee: the provider’s stated charge.
- Receiving deductions: fees or taxes charged to the recipient, plus possible intermediary or receiving-bank charges.
- Amount delivered: the final USD credited or made available to the recipient.
The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada warns that “Some businesses make a profit on money transfers by charging a higher than usual exchange rate.” It also notes that “The person you’re sending the money to (the recipient) may have to pay a fee or tax to collect the money.” Treat both statements as part of your cost calculation, not as afterthoughts.
The reliable method: compare like-for-like quotes
Rates change continuously, and the payment method can change both price and delivery time. A fair comparison requires the same details in every quote.
#1 Best Overall
- Set the transaction: enter the same CAD amount, Canadian province or account details where requested, U.S. destination, and delivery type.
- Match the funding method: compare bank transfer with bank transfer, debit or credit card with the same card type, and account balance with account balance. Do not compare a low-cost bank-funded quote with a card-funded quote and call the difference an exchange-rate advantage.
- Record the quote: note the CAD debited, stated fee, exchange rate, USD delivered, delivery estimate, and quote-expiry or rate-lock information.
- Check deductions: ask whether the recipient’s bank or an intermediary can subtract a charge before the USD arrives.
- Repeat at roughly the same time: obtain two or three quotes within a short window because currency markets move.
- Choose by delivered USD: select the option that meets your timing and delivery requirements while producing the highest confirmed amount received.
A useful calculation is effective cost in CAD per USD received: divide the total CAD you pay by the final USD delivered. This lets you compare quotes even when one provider displays a fee separately and another folds more of its margin into the rate.
How the main Canada-to-U.S. options differ
| Option | What it supports | What to verify before sending |
|---|---|---|
| Wise | CAD-to-USD transfers, delivery to a local U.S. bank account, and funding from a Wise account, bank transfer, direct debit, or card. | Live all-in quote, funding cost, delivered USD, estimated arrival, and whether the selected funding method changes the rate or fee. |
| Remitly | Canada-to-U.S. transfers, bank deposit and other delivery methods that depend on the destination, payment option, tracking, and quote-based pricing. | Available U.S. delivery method, current quote, payment option, delivery estimate, and whether any introductory price applies to your transaction. |
| OFX | Canada-to-U.S. transfers, direct debit and certain other payment methods, online tracking, and telephone or other support channels. | Customer exchange rate, transfer fee, any bank charge for sending funds, funding method, transfer amount, and estimated completion. |
| Bank or other transfer business | Transfer services with fees, exchange-rate pricing, and delivery times that vary by institution and route. | Applied exchange rate, every sender fee, when the rate is locked, total USD delivered, and recipient or intermediary deductions. |
These are not permanent rankings. No provider can be established as the cheapest for every amount, payment method, or day. Use the table to build a shortlist, then make the decision from current quotes.
Wise: several funding choices, different prices
Wise presents a CAD-to-USD route with delivery to a local U.S. bank account. Its displayed cost changes according to how you fund the transfer. In the provider’s live example for a 1,000 CAD transfer, the page showed a 6.38 CAD fee when funded from a Wise account and a 7.41 CAD fee when funded by bank transfer at the time it was viewed.

The displayed rate, fee, and delivery estimate can change. Wise generally describes account-balance and bank-transfer funding as lower-cost methods than card-based funding, but you should verify the exact amount for your transaction. If a card is convenient, compare the final USD delivered after the card charge rather than assuming the speed or convenience is free.

- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
Before confirming, check whether the quote shows a separate funding charge, the exact USD amount reaching the U.S. account, and the time for the transfer to arrive. A local-bank delivery can be useful when the recipient needs a normal U.S. account credit rather than cash collection.
Remitly: delivery choice can change the quote
Remitly supports transfers from Canada to the United States, with bank deposit and other delivery methods depending on the recipient’s location. Its price varies with the amount, payment method, and delivery choice. The service provides tracking, which can help you see whether the transfer is processing, sent, or available to the recipient.
Start by selecting the exact U.S. delivery method the recipient can use. Then compare the displayed USD amount and arrival estimate with a bank-deposit quote from another provider. If an introductory offer appears, read the conditions and determine whether the rate or fee will change after the offer ends. Do not treat a promotional quote as evidence that the service is always cheapest.

OFX: useful when you value tracking and a stated processing window
OFX supports Canada-to-U.S. transfers and lists direct debit among its payment options. It offers online tracking and says most transfers finish within one to two business days after it receives the funds. That timing begins after OFX has the money, so the time required for your bank to send funds is a separate part of the schedule.
Rank #3
Compare OFX using the customer exchange rate and the total CAD required, not a headline rate. Ask whether your bank will charge for the outgoing payment and whether the recipient’s bank or an intermediary can deduct a fee. For a large transfer, confirm any amount limits, identity checks, and the exact point at which the rate is fixed.
Payment method is a major cost and timing decision
Bank transfer
Bank funding is commonly presented as a lower-cost route, but your Canadian bank may charge to send the funds. Include that charge in the CAD total. Delivery can be slower than a card-funded transaction because the provider must first receive and verify the bank payment.
Direct debit
Direct debit may be available for particular providers and accounts. Confirm the authorization process, withdrawal date, cancellation rules, and whether the quote remains valid while the debit is pending.
Debit or credit card
Cards can be convenient and may support faster processing, but the provider’s fee can be higher. Your card issuer could also classify the transaction in a way that creates an additional charge. The only reliable comparison is the final CAD cost and USD delivered on the confirmation screen.
Rank #4
Provider account balance
Funding from an existing provider balance may have a different fee from funding by bank transfer or card. Use the quote for your actual balance and destination; do not apply a fee shown for another funding method.
Delivery speed, rate timing, and recipient charges
Faster delivery usually costs more, according to Canadian consumer guidance. Decide whether the recipient needs the money in minutes, the same day, or within several business days before comparing prices. A slower bank-funded transfer may be worthwhile if it materially improves the delivered USD.
Ask each provider:
- When is the exchange rate set: at quote, when you pay, or when the provider receives funds?
- How long is the quote or rate lock valid?
- Does the estimate count weekends and holidays?
- Can a U.S. receiving bank or intermediary deduct a fee?
- Will the recipient receive the exact displayed USD, or can the amount change after dispatch?
Keep the transfer receipt and transaction number. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada specifically recommends retaining these details so you can track the payment and resolve a problem.

A practical decision framework
For a routine bank deposit
Enter the same CAD amount with Wise, Remitly, OFX, and your bank or another institution. Select U.S. bank deposit wherever available, use the same funding method, and choose the quote delivering the most USD within your acceptable window.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
When speed matters
Compare the fastest available delivery option on each service and price the complete transaction. A rapid option can carry a higher fee or weaker rate. Confirm that “instant” or “same day” describes the recipient’s access, not merely the provider’s dispatch of funds.
For a large transfer
Request a current quote directly for the full amount and verify transfer limits, identity-verification requirements, bank charges, and rate-lock duration. A small difference in the exchange rate can outweigh a flat fee when the principal is large.
When the recipient cannot receive a bank deposit
Use a location-supported alternative only after checking its collection fee, identification requirements, opening hours, and exchange rate. Remitly’s non-bank delivery methods depend on location, so availability must be confirmed for the recipient’s specific U.S. destination.
Common mistakes that make a transfer more expensive
- Choosing the lowest advertised fee: compare the USD delivered after the exchange-rate margin.
- Mixing payment methods: a bank-funded quote and a card-funded quote are not like-for-like.
- Ignoring the receiving bank: an intermediary or U.S. bank can reduce the amount credited.
- Comparing quotes at different times: currency movement can explain a difference that is not a provider advantage.
- Assuming a promotional rate repeats: verify whether the offer is limited to a first transfer, amount, or payment method.
- Forgetting funding time: a provider’s processing estimate may begin only after it receives your CAD.
- Failing to save records: keep the receipt, transaction number, quote details, and delivery estimate.
Pre-send checklist
- Confirm the recipient’s legal name, U.S. bank details, and delivery method.
- Enter identical transaction details in two or three current quote tools.
- Write down total CAD paid, all visible fees, exchange rate, USD delivered, and arrival estimate.
- Check the quote expiry, rate lock, limits, verification steps, and funding time.
- Ask who pays intermediary or receiving-bank charges.
- Save the confirmation and transaction number, then track completion.
The best choice is the quote that delivers the required USD at an acceptable speed with no unresolved deductions—not a provider selected from a universal “cheapest” list.
