The Employees’ Provident Funds Scheme does not provide a separate claim for withdrawing only the interest credited to an EPF account while leaving every contribution untouched. Interest is credited into the same running EPF balance. When you make an eligible partial withdrawal, final settlement or transfer, the amount is dealt with under that route’s rules; there is no separate “interest-only” bucket.
Why EPF interest cannot normally be taken out on its own
Paragraph 60 of the Employees’ Provident Funds Scheme, 1952 treats interest as part of the member’s account balance. It states: “Interest shall be credited to the member’s account on monthly running balances basis.” That wording matters because the scheme describes a single account accumulation made up of contributions and credited interest, not two independently withdrawable balances.

As a result, a member cannot normally submit a claim asking EPFO to release only the interest accumulated to date while preserving all employee and employer contributions. A qualifying claim is processed against the account under the applicable provision. The account’s interest calculation is included in that processing, subject to the timing and settlement rules that apply.

This answer concerns the EPF provident-fund account. The Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) is a separate benefit with different service and eligibility rules. Taking an EPF advance or settlement does not, by itself, determine whether you qualify for an EPS pension or any EPS withdrawal benefit.

How paragraph 60 calculates interest
The scheme’s calculation language explains why interest is integrated with the balance rather than paid as a separate withdrawal. Interest is worked out on monthly running balances, with different treatment for money already in the account, money withdrawn during the year and money credited during the year.
Balance carried from the previous year
For the preceding year’s balance, the scheme provides for the full-year interest after taking account of withdrawals made during the relevant period. The balance is therefore not treated as a fixed principal that generates a separately payable cash amount; it is adjusted as the account changes.
Amounts withdrawn during the current year
For sums withdrawn during the current year, paragraph 60(2)(a)(ii) describes interest “from the beginning of the current year upto the last day of the month preceding the month of withdrawal.” In practical terms, the interest attributable to the withdrawn amount is calculated up to the month before the withdrawal month under the scheme’s formula. That calculation forms part of the claim amount; it is not a separate interest-only payment.

The scheme also provides for interest from the month after credit on sums added during the year. The timing of a contribution can therefore affect the interest credited for that financial year. A contribution made late in a month is not necessarily treated in the same way as a balance that was present at the start of the year.
Claims authorized late in a month
Paragraph 60 contains a timing proviso for claims authorized on or after the 25th day of a month. This is one reason an amount shown in a member’s passbook or settlement calculation can differ from a simple calculation based only on the annual contribution total. The scheme’s monthly-balance method and authorization date both matter.

What withdrawal routes are actually available?
EPFO identifies three different account routes. None is an interest-only withdrawal, but each can involve interest that has been credited under paragraph 60.
| Route | What it does | Typical form or record identified by EPFO | Interest treatment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Partial withdrawal or advance | Allows a withdrawal for a purpose and eligibility condition specified by the applicable EPF rules, such as house construction, higher education, marriage or illness. | Form 31 | Interest remains part of the running account calculation. The claim is not limited to a separately labelled interest balance. |
| Final settlement | Closes out the member’s EPF accumulation when the final-settlement conditions are met, such as the relevant employment situation and claim requirements. | Form 19 | The settlement amount follows paragraph 60 and the provisions governing final settlement. It is not an interest-only claim. |
| Transfer | Moves an old EPF account balance to a new account rather than paying money to the member. | Form 13 | A transfer preserves the account accumulation in the receiving account; it does not withdraw interest separately. |
The form name alone does not guarantee eligibility or approval. EPFO checks the member’s records, service details, employer information, KYC status and the purpose or event supporting the claim.
Partial withdrawal: what it means for your interest
A partial withdrawal is an advance or permitted withdrawal from the EPF account, not a request to skim off interest. The amount available depends on the purpose, membership and service conditions, the balance available and any applicable ceiling. EPFO’s published examples include house construction, higher education, marriage and illness.
Before filing a partial-withdrawal claim
- Identify the permitted purpose that matches your circumstances.
- Check the service-period and other eligibility conditions shown for that purpose.
- Review your passbook or member account so you know which contributions and credits are actually recorded.
- Confirm that your Universal Account Number, bank details, Aadhaar and other KYC information are correctly linked where required.
- Check the current member-portal instructions because forms, document requirements and processing rules can change.
If the claim is approved, the payment is an amount calculated under the applicable advance rule. It does not mean that all contributions remain untouched while only interest is removed. A withdrawal reduces the account balance, and subsequent interest is calculated on the balance that remains.
Final settlement is different from an interest-only request
Form 19 is the route EPFO identifies for a member’s final settlement. A final settlement is intended to pay the eligible EPF accumulation under the conditions governing that event; it is not a mechanism for withdrawing only interest while retaining the principal contribution in the same account.

Do not assume that resignation, unemployment or a break in service automatically produces an immediate full settlement. The applicable rule, the member’s records and any current notification determine whether a final claim can be filed and when it can be paid. A claim may also be affected by whether the account has been transferred, whether contributions are still being posted and whether the employer has completed required filings.

At its 238th meeting on 13 October 2025, the Central Board of Trustees approved a simplification and liberalization framework for partial withdrawals. An EPFO press brief dated 15 October 2025 described several proposed changes:
- A 12-month minimum service period for partial withdrawals.
- Greater frequency for education and marriage withdrawals.
- A requirement to retain at least 25% of the PF balance.
- Revised waiting periods for final settlement.
- During unemployment, immediate access to 75% of the PF balance, with the remaining 25% after one year.
- Exceptions under which the entire balance could be withdrawn.
These figures are from official announcements and explanations, not an independent calculation of an individual account. The official materials available by 13 October 2026 include Board decisions, a press brief, a newsletter and draft meeting minutes, but they do not establish that every announced change had been formally notified and made effective for every member.
Therefore, treat the 12-month period, 25% retention requirement and 75%/25% unemployment split as an announced reform framework unless the relevant notification and your current member-portal instructions confirm that they apply to your claim. A proposal or Board decision should not be treated as a universal entitlement without checking its commencement date, transitional provisions and exact wording.
How to check what you can claim now
- Open your current EPFO member account records. Review the passbook or balance information for employee contributions, employer contributions, transfers and credited interest.
- Separate EPF from EPS entries. Pension-scheme service and contributions answer different questions from the withdrawable EPF accumulation.
- Choose the correct claim category. Use the partial-withdrawal route for a qualifying purpose, Form 19 for an eligible final settlement, or Form 13 when moving an old account to a new one.
- Read the live eligibility text. Check the portal’s current service, purpose, balance, waiting-period and document requirements rather than relying on an older article or an uncommenced announcement.
- Verify personal and employer data. Name, date of birth, bank account, KYC and employment dates must match the records used for processing.
- Submit only after confirming the amount basis. The amount shown for a partial claim is not an interest-only figure; it is the permitted withdrawal from the account under the applicable rule.
- Keep the claim reference and calculation details. If the amount differs from your expectation, compare the authorization date, contribution posting dates, transfers and monthly-balance interest treatment before raising a grievance with EPFO.
EPFO’s claim guidance identifies Forms 19, 31 and 13, but the exact online screens and document prompts can be revised. Use the current instructions displayed for your account and retain a copy of the submitted claim.

Worked timing example (without assuming an interest rate)
Suppose a member has a balance carried into a financial year, receives monthly contributions, and files an eligible advance in September. Under paragraph 60’s description, interest on the amount withdrawn is considered from the beginning of that year through the last day of August, the month before the withdrawal. Contributions credited during the year follow the rule that interest begins from the month after credit.
This example does not produce a rupee amount because the applicable annual rate, contribution dates, opening balance and withdrawal amount are all required. It illustrates why multiplying “total contributions” by an annual percentage will not reliably reproduce an EPFO settlement figure. The account’s monthly running balances and the claim’s timing control the calculation.

“The passbook shows interest, so I can withdraw that line.”
A passbook entry records a credit to the EPF account. It is not a separate cash wallet or claim type. The credit increases the account accumulation that is considered under a permitted withdrawal, settlement or transfer.
“A partial withdrawal leaves my contributions intact.”
A partial withdrawal reduces the account balance under the permitted limit. The remaining balance continues under the scheme’s interest-crediting method, but the withdrawn amount is no longer part of the account on which future interest is calculated.

“EPF and EPS are one combined balance.”
They are separate scheme benefits. EPF settlement rules do not answer questions about pensionable service, EPS pension eligibility or any EPS withdrawal benefit. Check those questions separately against your service history and scheme records.

“The 2025 announcement automatically applies today.”
An announcement is not necessarily the same as a notified and commenced amendment. Confirm the effective notification and the live claim instructions before relying on any announced percentage, waiting period or service threshold.
When an expected amount looks wrong
- Check whether a recent contribution or transfer has actually posted.
- Check whether the claim was authorized before or after the relevant monthly cut-off described in paragraph 60.
- Confirm that you selected a partial claim, final settlement or transfer, because each route has a different calculation and purpose.
- Look for rejected or missing employer filings that could leave a month absent from the account.
- Compare EPF entries with EPS entries so that pension-scheme amounts are not mistaken for withdrawable EPF money.
- Use EPFO’s current grievance or member-support channel if the account record remains inconsistent after these checks.
Is there any situation where only interest is paid?
Not as a normal member-initiated EPF claim described by the scheme. Interest may be calculated as part of a settlement or withdrawal, and an account statement may show interest as a separate accounting entry, but the rules do not establish a standalone application that pays only that entry while preserving all contributions in the same account.
If an employer, administrator or portal displays an “interest” adjustment, ask what transaction it represents: annual crediting, a transfer correction, a settlement calculation or another account adjustment. The label alone does not create an interest-only withdrawal right.
Questions to ask before choosing a claim
- Am I still employed and receiving contributions, or do I meet the conditions for final settlement?
- Is my need one of the purposes permitted for a partial withdrawal?
- Has the relevant 2025 reform notification actually commenced for my claim type?
- Are my service dates, KYC, bank details and employer filings complete?
- Am I asking about EPF money, or about a separate EPS pension entitlement?
Those answers determine the available route. None converts the EPF account’s credited interest into a separately withdrawable balance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I withdraw only the interest shown in my EPF passbook?
No separate interest-only claim is described in the EPF Scheme. The credited interest forms part of the running EPF account balance and is handled through an eligible advance, final settlement or transfer.
Which form is used for an EPF interest withdrawal?
There is no dedicated interest-withdrawal form. EPFO identifies Form 31 for specified partial withdrawals, Form 19 for final settlement and Form 13 for transfer.
Does the 75% unemployment withdrawal rule apply to everyone now?
The 75% immediate and 25% after one year split was described in a 2025 official reform explanation. Confirm the formal notification and current portal instructions before relying on it for a claim.
Is EPF interest the same as EPS pension money?
No. EPF accumulation and EPS pension benefits are governed separately. An EPF withdrawal calculation does not establish EPS pension eligibility.
