Yes, but the answer depends on the exact product. A bank fixed deposit (FD) is generally eligible for premature closure, with interest recalculated for the time actually held and a bank-specific penalty disclosed in its terms. A Post Office deposit is not one product: a Time Deposit (TD), Monthly Income Scheme (MIS) and Senior Citizens’ Savings Scheme (SCSS) each have different lock-ins and closure rules. Before giving instructions, identify the scheme, the deposit date, the account holder and the institution’s current terms.
Why the product name matters
“Post Office deposit” can mean several small-savings accounts, while “bank FD” can mean a retail term deposit, a tax-saving deposit or a deposit owned by a business. Their liquidity rules are not interchangeable. The same early-withdrawal request can therefore be allowed for one account, delayed for another or rejected for a third.

Use this five-point test before you ask for money:
- Is premature closure allowed for this exact scheme and account type?
- Has the minimum holding period passed?
- Which interest rate applies to the actual period held?
- Is a separate penalty or interest reduction added?
- Do eligibility, authorization or documentary requirements apply?
The payout shown on an account-opening receipt is usually the maturity amount, not a promise of what you will receive after an early closure.

Bank fixed deposits: what happens when you close early?
Interest is normally recalculated for the period held
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidance allows each bank to set its own penal rate for premature withdrawal, provided the applicable penalty is disclosed along with the deposit rate. When you close an FD early, the bank generally calculates interest using the rate applicable to the actual period the money remained on deposit, rather than automatically preserving the contracted rate for the original full term.

For example, an FD booked for a longer term but closed after a shorter period may be repriced using the bank’s rate for that shorter completed period. The original receipt may show a higher rate, but that rate does not necessarily survive an early closure. Ask the bank to show both the applicable shorter-term rate and the penalty deduction on its quote.
Minimum-period rule
If the deposit is withdrawn before the bank’s prescribed minimum period, RBI guidance says no interest is payable. The minimum is product- and bank-specific, so do not assume that a deposit held for only a few days or weeks has earned a pro-rated return.
Who can normally request early withdrawal?
RBI says banks should not normally refuse a premature-withdrawal request from an individual or a Hindu Undivided Family (HUF), regardless of the deposit size. The position can be different for a large deposit held by a company, partnership or another entity. A bank may disallow premature withdrawal for such non-individual depositors when that restriction was included in a policy notified in advance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat distinction is about the account holder, not merely the person visiting the branch. A company’s authorized signatory cannot rely on the retail-individual rule, and an individual operating a sole-proprietor account should check how the bank classifies the deposit.

There is no universal bank penalty
One bank may reduce the applicable rate by a stated percentage, another may use a different penal method, and some products may have special restrictions. The RBI does not prescribe one flat penalty for every bank FD. The only reliable figure is the dated calculation produced for your account under that bank’s terms.
How to close a bank FD before maturity
- Check the receipt and terms. Note the booking date, original term, deposit amount, account ownership, maturity date and any premature-closure clause.
- Request a written premature-closure quote. Ask the branch or digital banking channel to state the rate for the actual holding period, the penal deduction, accrued interest and the net amount payable. Request the calculation date as well.
- Confirm the minimum period. If the deposit has not crossed the bank’s minimum holding period, ask whether interest will be zero under the applicable rule.
- Check authorization requirements. Joint holders, HUFs, companies, trusts and other entities may need particular signatures, board or trustee resolutions, or an authorized-person mandate.
- Compare alternatives. If only part of the cash is needed, ask whether the bank permits a partial withdrawal, a loan or overdraft against the FD, or closure of one deposit instead of all linked deposits. These are product-specific options; obtain their costs in writing.
- Submit the closure instruction and preserve records. Keep the receipt, request, quote, identity documents and credit confirmation. Verify that the FD status changes from active to closed and that the proceeds reach the intended account.
Do not treat an online “close deposit” button as a final price until the confirmation screen displays the recalculated interest and penalty. If those figures are absent, obtain a branch or customer-service calculation first.
Post Office Time Deposit (TD)
Six-month lock-in
The 2023 amendment to the Post Office Time Deposit rules says a TD cannot be withdrawn before six months. The six-month threshold is a scheme rule, not a market statistic. Ask the accounts office to calculate the exact date on which your deposit becomes eligible; the office should apply the rule in force for your account and deposit date.

What you receive after six months
Once six months have passed, the interest outcome depends on the TD’s original term and the time elapsed before closure. It is not safe to describe every early TD closure as a single flat penalty. The applicable clause can change the rate or amount credited, so request a written calculation showing:

- the deposit date and closure date used;
- the original TD term;
- the interest rule applied to the elapsed period; and
- the net principal and interest payable.
India Post may require the account holder to submit the passbook, prescribed closure form and identity or authorization documents. Requirements can vary with single, joint, minor or deceased-holder accounts; confirm the list at the post office handling the account.
Post Office Monthly Income Scheme (MIS)
Early closure starts after one year
India Post’s overview states that an MIS account may be closed prematurely after one year. A request before that point is not treated like an ordinary bank FD withdrawal.
Do not assume a standard deduction
The amount payable on an early MIS closure depends on the detailed rule applicable to the account and the closure date. The overview confirms eligibility after one year but is not, by itself, a complete calculation table. Ask the post-office accounts office to quote the current deduction and show how previously paid monthly income is treated before signing the closure request.
Because MIS pays income during the term, compare the proposed closure amount with the income already received and with the remaining scheduled payments. A simple comparison of principal with the original maturity figure can overstate the benefit of staying invested or the cost of leaving early.

Senior Citizens’ Savings Scheme (SCSS)
SCSS is a restricted-liquidity product
SCSS has a five-year term and should not be treated as a bank FD with the same exit flexibility. Official rule material describes premature closure only on specified grounds and sets conditions for those closures. The scheme also contains separate provisions for closure after the depositor’s death and for continuation by an eligible spouse; those provisions are not a general early-withdrawal option for every account holder.
One-percentage-point reduction in stated cases
In the premature-closure circumstances covered by the rules, the interest rate is reduced by one percentage point. That reduction applies to the cases specified in the rule material; it should not be presented as a universal SCSS penalty for every possible request. Ask the post office or bank handling the account to identify the qualifying ground and calculate the reduction on the amount payable.
Documents and eligibility
Before visiting the branch or post office, confirm the evidence required for your ground for closure. A death-related claim, for instance, follows a different process from a voluntary closure request and may require a death certificate, nominee or legal-heir documentation and identity checks. An eligible spouse’s continuation is also a distinct rule, not an automatic transfer to any joint holder.
Side-by-side comparison
| Product | Early withdrawal threshold | How the return is determined | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bank FD | Bank’s stated minimum period; before it, no interest is payable under RBI guidance | Rate for the actual period held, plus the bank’s disclosed penal rate or deduction | Large non-individual deposits may be made non-withdrawable if the policy was notified in advance |
| Post Office TD | Not before six months under the 2023 amendment | Depends on the original term and elapsed time under the applicable TD clause | No universal flat penalty; obtain a scheme-specific calculation |
| Post Office MIS | Premature closure permitted after one year according to India Post’s overview | Detailed current rule determines the deduction and net payout | Do not infer the deduction from a bank FD or from the TD rule |
| SCSS | Only on specified grounds under the rules; five-year term | Specified premature-closure treatment, including a one-percentage-point reduction in stated circumstances | Death and eligible-spouse continuation have separate provisions |
How to decide whether closing early is sensible
Compare the net payout, not the headline rate
Write down the amount you would receive today, the interest already credited, the interest you would forgo until maturity and the cost of the alternative source of funds. A lower early-closure payout can still be rational if the alternative is an expensive loan or a missed essential payment, but the decision should use the bank or post office’s written quote rather than the maturity amount.

Consider closing only what you need
If several deposits exist, ask for a quote on each one. Closing a deposit with the shortest remaining term or the smallest penalty may preserve more of the overall return than breaking the first certificate listed in the account.
Check whether the account is restricted
Tax-saving, pledged, lien-marked, deceased-holder and certain institutional deposits can have additional restrictions. The rules described here do not establish early-withdrawal conditions for every Indian savings product. Do not extend them automatically to National Savings Certificate (NSC), Public Provident Fund (PPF), Recurring Deposit (RD), Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP) or another scheme; check that product’s current official rules.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using the original rate in your calculation: early closure usually uses the actual holding period’s rate, not the advertised maturity rate.
- Assuming every Post Office account has the TD rule: MIS and SCSS have different thresholds and conditions.
- Ignoring the account holder category: RBI’s normal non-refusal guidance is for individuals and HUFs; entity deposits can be treated differently.
- Relying on a verbal estimate: ask for a dated written quote that separates recalculated interest from the penalty.
- Arriving without authority documents: joint, minor, HUF, company, trust and death-related accounts may need additional signatures or proof.
- Closing before eligibility: a request made before a six-month TD lock-in or one-year MIS threshold can fail even when cash is urgently needed.
What to do if the request is refused or the amount looks wrong
- Ask the institution to identify the exact clause, minimum period and account classification used.
- Request the calculation in writing, including the rate for the actual holding period and every deduction.
- Compare the quote with the deposit receipt and the terms supplied when the account was opened.
- For a bank FD held by an individual or HUF, ask why a refusal is considered consistent with the bank’s policy and RBI guidance.
- Escalate through the bank’s or India Post’s formal complaint channel if the explanation does not match the written terms, retaining copies of every submission and response.
A practical checklist before signing
- Exact scheme name: bank FD, Post Office TD, MIS or SCSS.
- Deposit date, original term and proposed closure date.
- Account holder type and all required signatures.
- Eligibility threshold confirmed as passed.
- Rate for the actual period held shown separately.
- Penalty, deduction or one-percentage-point SCSS reduction identified where applicable.
- Net proceeds, payment method and expected credit date recorded.
- Receipt, passbook, closure form and identity documents retained.
The safest approach is to treat early withdrawal as a fresh calculation, not as a simple cancellation of the original contract. Obtain the institution’s current, account-specific quote before authorizing closure.
