Can You Use a Qualified Charitable Distribution to Satisfy an RMD?

Yes. A properly completed qualified charitable distribution (QCD) from an eligible IRA can satisfy all or part of that IRA owner’s required minimum distribution (RMD) for the year. The IRA trustee generally must send the money directly to an eligible charity, and the owner must be at least 70½ on the distribution date. If the QCD is smaller than the RMD, the owner must take the balance by the applicable deadline.

A QCD is not the same as withdrawing money personally and then donating it. The payment path, recipient, documentation and tax reporting determine whether the transfer receives QCD treatment.

What a QCD does for an RMD

An RMD is the minimum amount that many traditional IRA owners must withdraw each year after reaching the applicable starting age. A QCD is a distribution from an IRA that is sent directly to a qualifying charitable organization. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) states that a qualifying QCD counts toward the owner’s RMD for the year, including all or only part of the amount due. See IRS Publication 590-B and the IRS IRA FAQ.

The QCD age rule and the RMD starting-age rule are different. You can generally make QCDs beginning at age 70½, while most IRA owners generally begin RMDs at age 73. That means a person may use QCDs for several years before an RMD is required.

Who can make a qualifying QCD

Age and account requirements

You must be at least 70½ on the date the distribution is made. The distribution must come from an eligible IRA, such as a traditional IRA. The IRS generally excludes a SEP IRA or SIMPLE IRA that is an ongoing employer arrangement from the normal QCD rule. Because account status can change, confirm with the IRA custodian whether a particular SEP or SIMPLE IRA is treated as ongoing.

The trustee must pay the charity directly

The IRA trustee or custodian should issue the payment directly to the charitable organization. A check payable to the charity and mailed to you for delivery may be accepted by some custodians, but the funds cannot be paid to you first and then donated if you want QCD treatment. Ask the custodian about its required form, payee wording and delivery procedure before requesting the transfer.

Recipient restrictions

The recipient must be an organization eligible to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions. QCDs cannot be made to a donor-advised fund or a supporting organization. You also cannot receive a benefit in exchange for the transfer; for example, a payment that gives you a personal benefit does not meet the charitable-transfer rules.

Obtain the same type of written acknowledgment that would substantiate a charitable contribution. Keep the acknowledgment even though a qualifying QCD is generally excluded from income rather than claimed as an itemized deduction.

How to use a QCD to cover an RMD

  1. Calculate the RMD for each IRA. Use the account balance and IRS life-expectancy table applicable to your situation. Your custodian may provide a calculation, but you remain responsible for taking the correct amount.
  2. Choose the QCD amount. You can direct an amount equal to the full RMD or only a portion. Decide whether the transfer also fits within the annual QCD exclusion limit for the tax year.
  3. Verify the charity. Confirm that the organization is eligible and that you will receive a contemporaneous written acknowledgment. Do not use a donor-advised fund, supporting organization or arrangement that provides you a benefit.
  4. Request a trustee-to-charity transfer. Follow the custodian’s QCD paperwork and have the check or electronic payment made payable and delivered to the charity as required by the custodian.
  5. Complete the transfer in the correct calendar year. The QCD must be made in the calendar year for which the RMD is due. Start early enough to allow processing, mailing and deposit before December 31 when that is the deadline.
  6. Take any unpaid RMD balance. If the RMD is larger than the qualifying QCD, withdraw the difference by the applicable RMD deadline. A QCD of $25,000 does not satisfy a $40,000 RMD; $15,000 remains due.
  7. Retain records for filing. Keep the custodian’s year-end tax form, the transfer request, proof of the date and amount, and the charity’s acknowledgment.

How IRA aggregation affects the calculation

For an owner with several traditional IRAs, the RMD is calculated separately for each account, but the total IRA RMD can generally be withdrawn from one or more of the owner’s IRAs. A QCD from one IRA can therefore be used as part of the owner’s overall IRA RMD, provided the distribution is otherwise qualified and the required total is met.

Employer-plan rules are different. RMDs from 401(k), 403(b) and similar plans generally must be taken separately from each plan. Do not assume that a QCD from an IRA satisfies an RMD owed by an employer plan. Review the plan’s rules and the IRS guidance in the retirement-plan and IRA RMD FAQs.

Deadlines, including a first RMD

Most IRA owners begin RMDs at age 73. The first RMD can generally be delayed until April 1 of the year after the year in which you reach the starting age. Delaying it does not eliminate the first RMD: you will generally have to take that delayed amount by April 1 and the next year’s RMD by December 31 of the same calendar year. That can create two taxable distributions in one year.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For later years, the RMD is generally due by December 31. A QCD intended to count for a particular year must be made during that calendar year, so a payment made after December 31 generally cannot be applied back to the prior year’s RMD. Beneficiaries, inherited IRAs and certain specialized situations follow additional rules; verify the deadline for the specific account rather than relying on the standard owner rule.

QCD limits and 2025 tax treatment

For tax year 2025, IRS Publication 590-B and the 2025 Form 1040 Instructions state an annual QCD exclusion limit of $108,000. The limit applies per eligible individual, so spouses filing jointly each have their own eligibility and limit. The figure is year-specific and can be adjusted by law; check the IRS publication for the tax year in which you make the distribution.

Within the 2025 $108,000 limit, a one-time election can allow up to $54,000 to be transferred to certain split-interest entities, such as a qualifying charitable remainder annuity trust, charitable remainder unitrust or charitable gift annuity. This specialized election has additional conditions and is not needed for a direct gift to an ordinary qualifying charity.

Income exclusion is not a charitable deduction

A qualifying QCD is generally excluded from gross income to the extent the distribution would otherwise be taxable. You cannot also claim an itemized charitable deduction for the same excluded amount. By contrast, a personal withdrawal may be included in income, while a later charitable gift is considered under the normal deduction rules and may be limited by adjusted gross income, itemization and other requirements.

Basis can change the result

If you made nondeductible contributions to an IRA, part of a distribution may represent basis rather than taxable income. Publication 590-B illustrates how the otherwise taxable portion of a QCD is treated and notes that Form 8606 may be required. Mixed distributions, prior basis, Roth IRA transactions and inherited accounts can make the calculation different from a straightforward all-pre-tax IRA. Use the filing-year instructions and obtain professional tax advice when basis or account status is involved.

How to report a QCD on your tax return

IRS reporting generally starts with the full IRA distribution shown on the custodian’s tax form. On Form 1040, report the distribution on the IRA distribution line and identify the amount that qualifies as a QCD according to that year’s instructions. If the entire distribution qualifies, the taxable amount may be zero, but the distribution still has to be reported.

Form 8606 may be needed for an IRA with nondeductible basis and other distributions, and special rules can apply to Roth IRA distributions. Follow the instructions for the actual filing year rather than copying a prior-year worksheet. A tax professional can help with basis, inherited-IRA, mixed-distribution or split-interest-entity situations.

QCD versus withdrawing first and donating later

Issue Qualifying QCD Ordinary withdrawal followed by a donation
Payment path IRA trustee sends the distribution directly to an eligible charity. IRA pays you; you later give cash to the charity.
RMD credit Can satisfy all or part of the IRA owner’s RMD. The withdrawal can be an RMD distribution, but the later gift does not turn it into a QCD.
Income treatment Generally excluded from income to the extent it would otherwise be taxable. The IRA withdrawal is generally included in income under the normal distribution rules.
Charitable deduction No charitable deduction for the amount excluded as a QCD. A separate charitable deduction may be available only under normal deduction rules and subject to their limits.
Recipient and benefits Recipient must meet QCD eligibility rules, and you cannot receive a benefit. Ordinary charitable-gift rules apply, but the payment is not a QCD.

The choice affects adjusted gross income, deductions, state taxes and other planning factors. State treatment may not match federal treatment, so evaluate the effect for your residence and filing status.

Common mistakes and how to prevent them

  • Sending the money to yourself first: Have the custodian make the payment directly to the charity instead.
  • Using an ineligible recipient: Verify the organization before initiating the transfer; donor-advised funds and supporting organizations are excluded.
  • Missing December 31: Begin the request early and confirm when the custodian considers the distribution made.
  • Assuming a partial QCD finishes the RMD: Compare the QCD with the total RMD and withdraw any remaining balance.
  • Applying IRA aggregation to an employer plan: Check each employer plan separately because its RMD generally cannot be satisfied from an IRA QCD.
  • Claiming both tax benefits: Do not include the QCD amount in income and also claim that same amount as an itemized charitable contribution.
  • Losing the acknowledgment: Keep the charity’s written acknowledgment and the custodian’s transaction records with your tax documents.
  • Ignoring basis or inherited-account rules: Ask for guidance when nondeductible contributions, Roth transactions, inherited IRAs or other special facts are present.

A practical pre-transfer checklist

  • You will be at least 70½ on the distribution date.
  • The account is an eligible IRA and is not an ongoing SEP or SIMPLE IRA excluded by the QCD rules.
  • The organization is eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions.
  • The payment will go directly from the trustee to the charity, with no personal benefit to you.
  • The amount fits within the QCD limit for the tax year.
  • You know the IRA RMD total and whether the QCD covers all or only part of it.
  • The transfer will be completed in the calendar year for which you want it counted.
  • You have a plan to report the distribution and retain the required acknowledgment.

Bottom line

A QCD is a federal-tax method for giving directly from an eligible IRA while counting the transfer toward that IRA owner’s RMD. The essential controls are age 70½ eligibility, a direct trustee-to-charity payment, an eligible recipient, calendar-year timing and a correct calculation of any RMD balance left after the gift. For 2025, the annual exclusion limit is $108,000 per eligible individual, but the applicable limit and reporting instructions should always be checked for the tax year involved.
