Can You Use a Fixed Deposit as Collateral Without a Paper Receipt?

Sometimes. A paper fixed-deposit receipt (FDR) is not a universal requirement for a loan or overdraft against an FD. The bank holding the deposit must be able to authenticate its record and complete its lien or pledge procedure. Some banks accept their own electronic records, a deposit-confirmation advice, or a digital application; others require the original certificate for a branch transaction. A paperless FD may also be expressly barred from being pledged. Confirm the rule for the exact deposit and borrowing channel before applying.

What the bank is actually checking

When you borrow against a fixed deposit, the bank is not relying on the paper as the asset itself. The asset is the bank’s recorded deposit obligation to you. The receipt is evidence of that obligation and, in some procedures, a document the bank controls before it lends.

The bank must establish three things:

  • the deposit exists, is still active, and belongs to the person or people applying;
  • the deposit’s terms permit it to secure a loan or overdraft; and
  • a legally and operationally effective lien or pledge has been recorded so the deposit cannot be withdrawn, transferred, or prematurely closed in a way that defeats the bank’s security.

Those checks are controlled by the deposit-taking bank. A self-prepared declaration, a photocopy, or a generic receipt holder does not automatically replace a bank-issued record. The bank can accept or reject an application under its product terms. ICICI Bank’s published terms, for example, state: “The Bank may at its sole discretion accept or reject any Application for the Facility.”

When a paper receipt may not be necessary

The bank can verify its own electronic record

If the FD was opened with the same bank that is making the loan, the institution may be able to match the deposit number, account holder, balance, maturity date, and status in its core banking system. In that situation, the bank may not need you to hand over a paper certificate. This is an internal verification decision, not a general right to borrow without documents.

The product has a digital loan channel

ICICI Bank’s terms say its loan or overdraft facility against an FD or recurring deposit can be availed through digital channels. Its FAQ describes activation through the bank’s app or internet banking for eligible facilities, subject to the bank’s policies. A digital application still involves authentication, consent, eligibility checks, and electronic lien creation; it is not an unsecured loan simply because no paper changes hands.

You received confirmation advice instead of an FDR

ICICI’s NRI deposit terms describe a customer who does not opt for an FD receipt receiving a deposit confirmation advice by default, with an FD receipt available on request. That demonstrates that a deposit can be held and evidenced without the customer possessing a traditional paper FDR. It does not establish that every deposit covered by those terms is eligible collateral or that every customer can use the same route. The bank must still approve the facility and mark its lien.

When the bank can insist on paper

Branch procedures may differ from digital procedures

Federal Bank describes an eligible resident-customer route initiated by SMS or missed call without paperwork. Its branch-based route, however, says deposit receipts or certificates are submitted to the disbursing branch. The contrast matters: “paperless” may describe one channel, customer group, or product, while a branch application for the same broad type of loan may require the certificate.

Some products require the original certificate within a deadline

Bank Mandiri’s certificate-deposit collateral process requires the physical certificate to be submitted to a branch within three business days. This is a product-specific Indonesian requirement, not an international standard. If your bank has a similar rule, an electronic statement or photograph may not satisfy the collateral condition.

A duplicate may be required when the original is lost

A bank that normally takes a certificate may ask for a lost-document declaration, identity verification, signatures from every holder, an indemnity, or a duplicate certificate before it records the lien. The exact combination is bank-specific. Ask for the lost-receipt procedure rather than assuming that a statement alone is enough.

No paper receipt does not mean the FD is pledgeable

Deposit terms can prohibit collateral use even when no physical receipt is issued. Hong Leong Islamic Bank’s eFD-i terms say that no physical receipt is provided, while also stating that the specified eFD-i must not be used as collateral for a credit facility. The absence of paper therefore answers only an evidence question; it does not answer the eligibility question.

Check the deposit’s account-opening terms for restrictions such as “non-assignable,” “not available as security,” or a prohibition on loans and overdrafts. An electronic product may be designed for savings only, or it may be restricted to a particular financing structure rather than a conventional loan.

What to do if you lost the receipt or never received one

  1. Contact the holding bank through an authenticated channel. Use the bank’s app, secure message facility, verified telephone number, or a branch. Do not send deposit details to an unverified email or social-media account.
  2. Identify the exact deposit. Have the deposit or account number, holder names, opening date if known, currency, maturity date, and linked settlement account available.
  3. Ask whether this specific FD is eligible. Eligibility can depend on deposit type, currency, remaining maturity, customer status, ownership, and whether the deposit is already pledged.
  4. Ask what evidence the bank will accept. Name the possible alternatives explicitly: an electronic deposit advice, account statement, duplicate certificate, bank-generated confirmation, or a lien-confirmation message.
  5. Confirm the channel requirements. Ask whether an app or internet-banking application is paperless while a branch application requires an original certificate. Ask where signatures, consent, or identity checks must occur.
  6. Get the lien timing in writing. Confirm when the lien will be marked, when funds can be drawn, and whether any disbursement is conditional on delivering a document later.
  7. Ask what happens at maturity or early closure. A lien can prevent premature withdrawal or transfer. Clarify how repayment, renewal, and set-off work before accepting the facility.

Do not apply on the assumption that a receipt can be supplied later. If the bank’s process requires the original, the application may be delayed or declined until the document or an approved replacement is received.

Documents and approvals the bank may request

Possible item Why it may be requested What to verify
Original FD receipt or certificate Branch control of a negotiable or security document Whether an original is mandatory, and whether a duplicate is available
Deposit confirmation advice or electronic statement Evidence generated from the bank’s own records Whether the advice identifies the deposit and is accepted for lien marking
Identity and address documents Customer authentication and regulatory checks Which holder must appear and whether fresh verification is needed
Consent and signatures Authority to encumber the deposit Whether every joint holder, mandate holder, or beneficial owner must approve
Lost-document declaration or indemnity Protection against a later claim based on the missing certificate Form, witnessing, stamp duty, and any replacement-certificate fee
Loan or overdraft agreement Defines interest, limit, repayment, default, and set-off rights Whether the lien covers the principal, interest, fees, or all amounts due

How much can you borrow?

The advance is normally a percentage of the deposit value, but the percentage is a product rule rather than a market-wide standard. The bank may reduce the amount for a short remaining maturity, a third-party deposit, a different currency, or a deposit type with special restrictions.

Published figure Bank or guidance Qualification
Up to 90% of FD value ICICI Bank Typical maximum for eligible deposits; actual amount depends on internal credit policy and deposit type. The FAQ page does not state a year.
Up to 90% of deposit amount Central Bank of India Ceiling stated for the bank’s described FDR scheme, subject to its rules. The product page does not state a year.
5%, 7.5%, 10%, 12%, or at least 20% margin Punjab National Bank guidance Margin for borrower-owned rupee term deposits varies with remaining maturity; third-party deposits have a separate margin. The guidance page does not state a year.

A 90% ceiling does not promise a 90% advance for your account. For example, a bank may lend less if the FD is close to maturity, if the loan currency differs, or if the product’s terms impose a larger margin. Ask for the approved limit, interest rate, margin, fees, and the amount that will remain blocked as security.

Ownership, joint holders, and third-party deposits

The name on the deposit matters. A sole-holder FD is usually simpler to verify than a joint deposit, but the bank’s mandate controls who must consent. Joint holders may all need to sign the loan and lien documents, even if the account mandate allows one holder to operate the deposit for ordinary transactions.

A deposit owned by someone other than the borrower is a third-party security arrangement. The bank may impose a different margin, require the owner to join as a co-obligor or security provider, and apply enhanced identity or tax checks. PNB guidance specifically distinguishes borrower-owned rupee term deposits from third-party deposits when setting margins. Do not assume that being an authorized signatory gives you the right to pledge another person’s FD.

Digital loan versus branch loan: questions to compare

Decision point Digital route Branch route
Deposit verification Usually matched to the customer’s authenticated online profile Staff may inspect records and physical documents
Evidence Electronic advice or internal record may be sufficient if the product permits it Original receipt or certificate may be required
Customer limits Often restricted to eligible resident, NRI, or pre-approved customers May support cases that require manual review, but acceptance is not guaranteed
Lien creation Electronic consent and system-generated lien Signed forms and document custody, followed by a recorded lien
Speed Can be immediate after automated approval Depends on branch review, signatures, and document validation
Exceptions Joint, third-party, dormant, or unusual deposits may be excluded Manual handling may be available, subject to the bank’s policy

Do not choose a route solely because it advertises “no paperwork.” Confirm that your particular FD, ownership pattern, and requested amount fit that route.

What the lien changes after approval

A lien is the bank’s recorded restriction over the deposit. PNB guidance describes noting a lien and verifying signatures for deposit-backed advances. State Bank of India’s NRI FAQ describes a lien being marked after successful processing. Until the bank confirms that the lien is recorded, you should not treat the loan as secured or assume funds are available.

While the lien is active, the bank may block premature closure, transfer, assignment, or withdrawal of the secured amount. If the deposit matures, the bank may renew it, place proceeds in a designated account, or retain control until the loan is repaid, depending on the agreement. Read the maturity clause: a loan against an FD does not necessarily extend automatically on the same terms as the deposit.

If you default, the agreement may permit the bank to set off the outstanding balance against the deposit, subject to applicable law and the contract. Ask whether interest, penalties, and fees are also secured, and whether a partial repayment releases a proportionate part of the lien or leaves the entire FD blocked until final settlement.

Common problems and the practical response

The app says the FD is not eligible

Check the deposit type, maturity, currency, customer category, and whether another lien already exists. Ask the bank whether a branch review can consider it; a branch cannot override a product prohibition, but it can explain the reason for an automated rejection.

The bank asks for a certificate you never received

Request a deposit confirmation advice or duplicate-certificate process and ask whether the original was waived when the FD was opened. Keep the bank’s written response. If the product terms prohibit collateral use without the certificate, the bank may require replacement documentation before proceeding.

A joint holder is unavailable

Ask whether the account mandate permits borrowing with fewer signatures. Do not sign for another holder unless the bank expressly authorizes that authority for the security transaction.

The FD is electronic but cannot be pledged

That is a product restriction, not a missing-document problem. Ask whether another eligible deposit can secure the facility or whether the bank offers a different borrowing product. Do not attempt to bypass the restriction with a printed statement.

The bank has not confirmed the lien

Do not withdraw, transfer, or rely on the FD as collateral until you receive confirmation of the recorded lien and the approved limit. A submitted application is not the same as completed security creation.

A short checklist before you apply

  • Exact deposit number and current balance
  • Deposit type, currency, maturity date, and remaining term
  • Names and mandates of all holders
  • Whether the deposit is already pledged, frozen, or under instruction
  • Accepted evidence when no paper receipt is available
  • Required signatures, identity checks, and any duplicate-document form
  • Maximum advance, margin, interest rate, fees, and repayment schedule
  • Date and method of lien confirmation
  • Rules for maturity, renewal, early closure, default, and release of the lien

The safest answer to the paper-receipt question is therefore conditional: a bank may lend against an FD using its electronic records, but only when that bank’s product and process allow it. Another bank, another deposit type, or another application channel may require a physical certificate—or may prohibit the deposit from being pledged altogether.
