Can You Switch From Professional Management to DIY Mutual Funds? A U.S. Transfer Guide

Yes. In the United States, you can generally leave an investment-advisory relationship and use a self-directed brokerage account to buy and manage mutual funds. The move may be a conversion at the same firm or a transfer to another firm. Whether you can transfer holdings without selling, which funds the new firm will accept, what services you lose, and what the switch costs depend on your account agreement, registration, investments, and destination brokerage.

Start with the key distinction: transferring an account is not the same as changing investments

A brokerage transfer moves an account and, when permitted, its assets. It does not automatically require you to sell every mutual fund and start over. Eligible securities can often move in kind—the shares are delivered to the new account without a sale. The receiving brokerage must be able to custody and service each security, however.

A fund that the new firm does not support may be rejected, transferred only as cash, or left behind in a separate account. The Securities and Exchange Commission identifies unavailable mutual funds as a common nontransferable-asset issue. Selling such a holding can create a taxable gain in a taxable account, and a replacement fund may have different expenses, share-class features, or investment results.

Keep the decisions separate:

  • Account move: Can the registration and each holding be delivered to the destination firm without liquidation?
  • Investment decision: Which funds, if any, should you continue to own, buy, sell, or replace once the account is there?

Ask the receiving firm to review your actual positions before you authorize a transfer. Confirm whether it will accept each fund and share class in kind, whether you may purchase additional shares, and whether any restrictions or extra transaction charges apply.

What changes when you leave an advisory account

Professionally managed or advisory arrangement

An advisory account normally provides ongoing advice for a recurring fee based on assets, although the exact services are controlled by your contract. Depending on the agreement, the adviser may select investments, rebalance, monitor the portfolio, provide planning, place trades, or exercise discretionary authority. A wrap-fee program may bundle some trading and advice costs, but fund expenses and other charges can remain separate.

Self-directed brokerage arrangement

In a self-directed account, you generally choose investments, place orders, maintain your allocation, and decide when to rebalance. The brokerage may provide education, tools, or recommendations, but it is not necessarily responsible for ongoing portfolio management. The account agreement and service description determine what support is included.

Moving to a brokerage account therefore changes more than the invoice. You take responsibility for selecting funds, checking whether an allocation has drifted, deciding how to invest new cash, and responding to market or personal changes. If you want occasional help without delegating day-to-day control, ask whether the brokerage offers advice under a separate arrangement and what that service costs.

Compare the complete cost, not one quoted percentage

Make a side-by-side estimate using your actual balance and expected activity. An advisory fee can look expensive next to a brokerage commission, but the comparison is incomplete unless you include the costs embedded in the funds and the services each arrangement provides.

Cost category Advisory arrangement Self-directed brokerage What to verify
Advice or account fee Often an asset-based periodic charge; a wrap fee may bundle specified services. May be no recurring advice fee, or a separate fee for optional advice. Rate, billing frequency, minimums, breakpoints, and exactly what the fee covers.
Fund expenses Expense ratios and other fund-level charges generally continue. Expense ratios and other fund-level charges continue. Each fund’s prospectus, share class, and any purchase or redemption charge.
Trading and transaction costs Some trades may be included in a wrap program; others may not be. Commissions may be zero for some orders, but transaction fees or fund-specific charges can still apply. Costs for purchases, sales, exchanges, and funds outside the brokerage’s transaction-fee program.
Transfer and account charges A transfer-out or account-closing fee may apply. The receiving account may have maintenance, transfer, or other charges. Both firms’ current fee schedules and any fee charged per account or per position.
Liquidation and tax costs May arise if a position cannot move or if you choose to sell. May arise when replacing unsupported or unwanted holdings. Deferred sales charges, redemption fees, tax basis, and unrealized gain or loss.

FINRA notes that an asset-based fee can be relatively costly for an investor who mostly buys and holds, because the fee continues even when few trades or little advice are needed. The same structure may be reasonable for someone who values continuing advice, planning, monitoring, or frequent trading. A self-directed account can reduce advice costs but may expose you to more decision-making, trading mistakes, or paid services you previously received as part of the advisory relationship.

Tax and account-registration issues to check before selling

Taxable brokerage accounts

In a taxable account, selling a mutual fund generally creates a reportable gain or loss based on your tax basis and sale proceeds. The tax result depends on your individual basis, holding period, other gains and losses, and applicable law. Do not assume that moving firms is tax-free if the move requires liquidation. Ask for the basis and unrealized gain or loss for every position that might be sold, and have a tax professional review material transactions when necessary.

IRAs and other tax-advantaged accounts

A direct transfer between accounts with the same tax treatment may avoid a current sale-related tax bill, but account rules, withholding, deadlines, and registration details still matter. Confirm that the receiving account is the correct type before submitting paperwork. A mistake can turn an intended transfer into a distribution or create other consequences.

Mutual-fund share classes and holding benefits

Some mutual funds offer share classes with different expense ratios, sales charges, eligibility rules, or conversion features. Selling can forfeit a benefit tied to the existing class or holding period. Ask both firms whether the exact share class can be held and purchased at the destination, and whether an exchange would change costs or eligibility.

Employer plans and rollovers

An employer retirement plan is not simply another brokerage account. A rollover can affect plan expenses, withdrawal rules, creditor protections, investment choices, and treatment of employer stock. The SEC identifies these as factors to evaluate before moving retirement assets. Obtain the plan’s distribution and rollover information before taking action.

How to switch: a practical sequence

  1. Collect the governing documents. Download the current advisory agreement, latest fee schedule, wrap-fee brochure if applicable, account statements, and the destination firm’s account agreement. Mark which advice, planning, monitoring, execution, and custody services are included today.
  2. Inventory every position. Record the fund name, ticker, share class, number of shares, account registration, cost basis, unrealized gain or loss, and any sales charge or redemption restriction. Include cash and any proprietary or less-common holdings.
  3. Get written transferability answers. Give the receiving firm the position list and ask which securities and share classes it will accept and hold in kind. Ask specifically about proprietary funds, funds that are not on its platform, purchase restrictions, and what will happen to an unsupported position.
  4. Request a full cost estimate from both firms. Include transfer-out and account-closing charges, receiving-account fees, liquidation or deferred sales charges, transaction costs, and any ongoing advice or platform fee. Ask whether the estimate changes if only part of the account moves.
  5. Model the consequences of each sale. For every holding that cannot transfer—or that you may replace—identify the account type, basis, unrealized gain or loss, holding period, and share-class benefits. Separate one-time costs from recurring costs. Obtain tax advice for your own circumstances rather than relying on a generic estimate.
  6. Compare the two service packages. List the work you would perform yourself: choosing funds, allocating contributions, rebalancing, monitoring, record keeping, and deciding when to change course. Compare that workload and the features you value with the advisory services you would give up.
  7. Open the destination account with matching registration. A transfer form normally requires the account title and registration to match. Follow the receiving firm’s instructions exactly and authorize the transfer from the new account, not by withdrawing assets to your bank unless that is specifically intended.
  8. Allow the transfer to settle and verify it. For a qualifying bank-to-broker or adviser transfer processed through the Automated Customer Account Transfer Service, the SEC describes an approximate three-to-five-business-day timeframe after the old firm receives a correct instruction. Transfers outside that system can take up to 30 days. These are process estimates, not guarantees for every account. Check that shares, cash, cost basis, beneficiaries, and recurring instructions arrived correctly.
  9. Implement your investment plan only after reconciliation. Do not sell or exchange positions merely because the account moved. First confirm what transferred, what did not, and what fees or restrictions apply. Then make any investment changes deliberately, with tax and allocation consequences in view.

When DIY mutual funds may fit—and when they may not

Your situation Questions to ask What the comparison may indicate
You buy and hold, need little ongoing help, and can maintain an allocation. Will the recurring advisory fee exceed all brokerage and fund costs for your expected activity? Can you rebalance consistently? A self-directed account may reduce recurring advice costs, but only if you are prepared to do the work.
You want continuing planning, monitoring, or discretionary decisions. Which services are included in the current fee, and what would an equivalent service cost separately? Keeping an advisory arrangement may provide value that a low trading cost does not replace.
You trade frequently or need help with complex decisions. Are trades included in the current arrangement? What behavioral or execution risks would you assume alone? Compare the value of advice and execution support with the potential savings from self-direction.
Your account contains unsupported or proprietary funds. Can they transfer in kind, remain at the old firm, or be sold without a prohibitive tax or charge? The transfer may need to be partial, staged, or reconsidered.
You are moving retirement assets from an employer plan. What plan protections, costs, withdrawal rules, and employer-stock provisions would change? Analyze the rollover separately from an ordinary taxable-account move.

Common mistakes and how to prevent them

  • Assuming every mutual fund is portable: Obtain a security-by-security answer before filing transfer paperwork.
  • Giving a sell order before checking taxes: A required or voluntary liquidation can create gains, losses, redemption charges, or lost share-class benefits.
  • Comparing only the adviser’s percentage: Add fund expenses, transaction costs, transfer fees, and the value of services that disappear.
  • Overlooking partial transfers: One unsupported position can remain at the old firm, creating two accounts and two sets of records.
  • Expecting the new brokerage to monitor the portfolio: Confirm who is responsible for rebalancing, suitability decisions, beneficiary updates, and cash management.
  • Failing to preserve records: Keep statements showing basis, acquisition dates, fees, and the transfer confirmation in case the receiving firm needs corrections.
  • Trading during an unsettled transfer without a plan: Wait for positions and cash to reconcile so you do not create unintended exposure or duplicate orders.

Questions to ask before you authorize the move

  • Can each holding and exact share class transfer in kind?
  • If not, will it be sold, returned, transferred as cash, or left at the old firm?
  • Can I buy additional shares of the same fund after transfer?
  • What transfer-out, account-closing, receiving-account, transaction, redemption, or deferred-sales charges apply?
  • Which advisory services end on the transfer date, and what support remains?
  • What is my tax basis and unrealized gain or loss for every position that may be sold?
  • Will the account registration, beneficiaries, automatic contributions, and cost-basis records carry over?
  • How long should this transfer take, and who do I contact if assets or records are missing?

The SEC and FINRA both emphasize understanding differences in services and fees before changing account types. There is no universally correct choice: the sensible arrangement is the one whose total cost, investment access, tax consequences, and level of responsibility match your goals and the work you are willing and able to perform.
