Yes, you can usually request an in-scheme switch from a Regular plan to the Direct plan in India, but it is not automatically tax-free. The fund house processes the request as a switch-out from Regular and a switch-in to Direct. For capital-gains purposes, that transaction can be treated as a transfer even when your money remains in the same scheme.
Before submitting the request, check the scheme’s latest exit-load terms, identify the tax lots and holding periods involved, compare the recurring expense-ratio saving with any immediate tax cost, and confirm the fund house’s cut-off and NAV rules.

What actually changes when you move to Direct
Regular and Direct are plan variants of the same mutual-fund scheme. The portfolio, securities and fund manager are common, but the plans have different expense ratios and NAVs. The Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) describes a Direct plan as having no distributor or agent in the investment route, while a Regular plan includes intermediary distribution.

#1 Best Overall
The lower Direct-plan expense ratio can improve compounding over a long period, but it does not guarantee a higher return. Your outcome depends on the actual fee difference, the scheme’s investment performance and how long you remain invested. Direct plans also remove the distributor’s ongoing role. SEBI’s investor explainer says Regular-plan intermediaries can help with advice and paperwork; Direct-plan investors must research schemes and handle transactions themselves, or obtain advice separately from a registered investment adviser.
Is a switch the same as changing a distributor code?
No. Because Regular and Direct plans have separate NAVs and plan records, a fund house normally uses an inter-plan switch process rather than simply relabelling existing units or editing a distributor code. The operational details vary by AMC and scheme, and may involve an online request, a transaction portal, a service centre or a signed form.
Economically, the process has two legs:
- Units in the Regular plan are switched out at the applicable NAV.
- The resulting amount is used to buy units in the Direct plan at its applicable NAV.
The proceeds may stay within the same scheme, but that continuity does not by itself remove tax consequences. AMFI states that switches between mutual-fund plans or options can be subject to capital-gains tax.

Potentially, yes. Tax is determined by the units and taxpayer involved, not merely by the fact that both plans have the same portfolio. The relevant event is the transfer out of the Regular-plan units. You need to establish the cost and transfer value for the units switched, then apply the rules for that fund category and holding period.

Facts that determine the calculation
- Scheme tax category: equity-oriented, debt-oriented or another category can produce different rules.
- Acquisition date and transfer date: each purchase lot may have a different holding period and cost.
- Units selected: a switch may cover all units or only specified units, subject to the fund house’s transaction method.
- Investor status: resident, non-resident and other taxpayer characteristics can affect the final liability.
- Other tax items: surcharge, cess, annual income and applicable exemptions or thresholds may matter.
Do not assume that a same-scheme switch preserves the original holding date for every tax purpose. Ask the AMC for the switch statement and retain the original purchase statements, account statements and contract notes needed to establish each lot.
Published equity-oriented-fund example
AMFI’s current investor tax guidance, accessed October 13, 2026, says that for transfers on or after July 23, 2024, long-term capital gains on equity-oriented funds above an annual ₹1,25,000 threshold are taxed at 12.5% when the units satisfy the conditions of section 112A. Those figures are an example of a specific statutory rule, not a universal mutual-fund rate.
The same AMFI guidance discusses the specified-mutual-fund definition applicable from financial year 2025–26 and explains that long-term classification for certain other units depends on whether they are listed or unlisted and on the holding period. Tax law can change, so verify the current rules for the date of your transfer and obtain professional advice when the amount is material.

How exit load applies
Exit load is separate from capital-gains tax. It is a scheme-specific charge imposed under the fund’s disclosed terms, usually based on how long the units have been held and the type of transaction. There is no universal rule that every Regular-to-Direct switch is free of exit load.
Rank #3
| Document or example | What it says | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| PPFAS FAQ | Its inter-plan Regular-to-Direct switch does not attract exit load. | This is the stated policy for that fund house’s process, not a rule for every AMC. |
| Trust Mutual Fund SID | Records an April 9, 2025 communication that intra-scheme Regular-to-Direct switches will not have exit load for that fund. | Read it as a scheme-specific, dated disclosure and check for later addenda. |
Before switching, download the latest scheme information document (SID), addenda and exit-load schedule for your exact plan and units. If the documents conflict, ask the AMC or registrar for written confirmation of the charge that will apply to your requested transaction date.
Which NAV and date will apply?
The AMC controls the applicable NAV and cut-off treatment. A fund house may use different rules from another, so do not copy timing from an unrelated scheme.
PPFAS states that both legs of its inter-plan switch use the same NAV date: the first business day after the request is received. If the request is submitted after the cut-off, it uses the next business day’s NAV under that process. This is PPFAS’s stated procedure, not a universal industry timetable. Your confirmation should show the request receipt date, applicable NAV date, switch-out value and Direct-plan units allotted.

Switch now or keep the Regular plan?
The decision is a trade-off between an immediate realization and a lower recurring cost. Compare the alternatives using the same investment horizon and realistic assumptions.
Rank #4
| Decision factor | Switch to Direct | Continue in Regular |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate tax | Potential capital gain on the Regular-plan units switched. | No switch realization while you continue holding, although future sales can still be taxable. |
| Exit load | Depends on the current SID, addenda and transaction terms. | Depends on any later redemption or switch under the applicable schedule. |
| Recurring cost | Usually lower because distributor expenses are not included. | Usually higher because the distribution route is compensated through scheme expenses. |
| Help with transactions | You handle scheme selection, transactions and records, or use separate regulated advice. | An intermediary may assist with advice, paperwork and servicing. |
| Investment exposure | Portfolio and fund manager remain common with the Regular plan of the same scheme. | Remains in the existing plan while you hold it. |
A lower expense ratio can be valuable when the holding period is long and the fee difference is meaningful. A switch may be less attractive when embedded gains create a large tax bill, when an exit load applies, or when you rely on distributor support that you would otherwise need to replace.
Step-by-step process for a Regular-to-Direct switch
- Identify the exact holding. Record the AMC, scheme name, option, plan, folio or account number, unit balance and each purchase date.
- Download current documents. Obtain the latest SID, statement of additional information, addenda and exit-load schedule. Look specifically for inter-plan-switch language.
- Request a transaction quote or illustration. Ask how many Regular units will be switched, which NAV date will be used, whether any exit load applies and how the Direct units will be allotted.
- Estimate the tax event. For each lot, compare the original cost with the switch-out value and classify the gain using the current rules for that scheme category and transfer date.
- Compare ongoing savings. Use the actual Regular and Direct expense ratios, your balance and expected holding period. Do not treat a lower cost as a promised return.
- Submit the switch request through the AMC’s approved channel. Complete the online or paper inter-plan-switch form, select the same scheme’s Direct plan and verify bank, KYC and contact details.
- Observe the cut-off. Submit early enough to meet the AMC’s stated time. Keep the acknowledgement showing when the request was received.
- Check both legs after processing. Confirm the switch-out NAV, switch-in NAV, units allotted, transaction date, exit load and any tax-reporting information.
- Update your records. Keep the old purchase statements, switch confirmation and the new Direct-plan statement together for future tax reporting and cost-basis checks.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming “same scheme” means “no tax”
The portfolio may be identical, but the plan transfer can still be a taxable realization. Obtain the lot-level numbers before authorising the transaction.
Using an old exit-load schedule
Exit-load rules can change through addenda or dated communications. Use the latest documents for your scheme and transaction date, not a generic website summary.
Expecting one NAV rule to apply everywhere
Cut-offs, receipt dates and NAV allocation are controlled by the AMC. PPFAS’s next-business-day description should not be applied automatically to another fund house.

Switching without replacing advice
Direct plans remove distributor involvement. If you need help with asset allocation, tax coordination or transaction administration, arrange appropriate advice separately and confirm that the adviser is properly registered.
Ignoring multiple purchase lots
A single folio can contain units bought on many dates and at different prices. A switch can therefore produce a mixture of short- and long-term gains rather than one simple gain figure.
Pre-switch checklist
- Latest SID and addenda downloaded.
- Exit-load treatment confirmed in writing for the exact scheme and plan.
- Purchase dates, costs and units reconciled for every lot.
- Applicable tax category and transfer-date rules checked.
- Regular and Direct expense ratios compared over your expected holding period.
- Need for distributor assistance or separate advice assessed.
- AMC cut-off, receipt method and NAV allocation confirmed.
- Cash set aside for any resulting tax liability.
Bottom line
You can generally move from a Regular to a Direct plan without withdrawing money from the scheme, but “without selling” is misleading for tax purposes. Treat the request as a switch-out and switch-in that may create capital gains. The right choice depends on your actual lots, current exit-load terms, tax position, expected holding period, expense-ratio saving and need for advice.
