Short answer: Social Security can provide an important, inflation-adjusted base of retirement income, but it is risky to treat it as a complete plan for every household. The Social Security Administration (SSA) itself asks workers to consider why they should not rely only on Social Security for all retirement income. Your useful answer comes from your own earnings record, claiming age, household expenses and other resources—not from a national average.
Start with a personalized SSA estimate, compare your payment at 62, full retirement age and 70, then test that income against housing, health care, taxes, debt and daily spending. The figures below are U.S. program amounts and rules for 2026; annual limits and projections can change.

What Social Security can—and cannot—do
It is a core income source for most workers
SSA’s retirement publication says, “Social Security is part of the retirement plan of almost every American worker.” Benefits are monthly payments based primarily on your covered wages and net self-employment earnings. They are designed to continue for life once claimed, with annual cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) under the program’s rules.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat role makes Social Security valuable for covering a portion of recurring costs. It does not, however, tell you whether your own retirement budget will balance. An estimate shows what SSA projects for you; it does not include your pension or investment income, and it does not measure your rent or mortgage, medical costs, taxes, insurance, debt payments or support for other family members.

Why “rely on it” is a personal question
Two people with the same age can receive very different benefits because their lifetime covered earnings and claiming dates differ. A household with a paid-off home and substantial savings may use Social Security differently from a renter who expects high health-care and housing costs. The practical test is whether your expected benefit, combined with dependable resources, covers your essential expenses under realistic assumptions.
How to find the benefit that applies to you
Use your personal earnings record
SSA’s online estimator uses your covered work earnings to produce an individualized retirement estimate. You can adjust expected future income, which helps if you plan to keep working, reduce hours or stop before retirement. Pensions, annuities, brokerage withdrawals and other investment income are not substituted for wages in this calculation.
Review the earnings history for missing or incorrect years before making a claiming decision. A reporting error can affect the estimate, and the amount shown is only as reliable as the record behind it. Save a copy of the estimate and note the date, because later earnings and future COLAs will change the projection.

Compare dates rather than one headline number
Ask SSA for estimates at several claiming ages. Compare the monthly amount, the date payments begin and the income you would need from savings during the waiting period. This makes the trade-off visible instead of treating one projected number as a promise.
- Sign in to your SSA account and open the retirement estimate or benefits calculator.
- Check each year of covered earnings and report discrepancies to SSA before relying on the result.
- Enter a realistic expected future wage, including a zero or reduced amount if you plan to stop working.
- Record estimates at 62, your full retirement age and 70, along with the assumptions and date.
- Place those monthly figures beside a written retirement budget and the income you expect from pensions, savings or other sources.
How claiming age changes your monthly payment
Retirement benefits can begin at age 62. Starting before full retirement age produces a permanently lower monthly amount than waiting for full retirement age. For people born in 1960 or later, full retirement age is 67; SSA describes that point as when the full scheduled retirement benefit is available. Delaying after full retirement age increases the monthly payment through delayed retirement credits up to age 70. There is no additional increase for waiting beyond 70.
| Claiming point | What changes | Decision trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 62 | Earliest retirement-benefit start in the cited SSA guidance; the monthly payment is lower than at full retirement age. | Earlier cash flow versus a permanently reduced monthly amount. |
| Full retirement age | For people born in 1960 or later, age 67; SSA treats this as the baseline for the full benefit. | Higher baseline amount than an early claim, while payments start later. |
| 70 | Delayed retirement credits raise the monthly amount; no further increase is earned after 70. | Higher lifetime monthly income versus waiting longer and funding more years before claiming. |
There is no universal best age
The right date depends on your own estimate, health and longevity expectations, need for current income, work plans, household arrangements and the amount you can safely draw from other assets while waiting. A higher payment at 70 can be useful when you expect to live a long time or want more guaranteed monthly income later. Claiming at 62 can be appropriate when work is no longer possible or immediate income is essential, but the lower amount is not a temporary discount that automatically resets at full retirement age.

What the 2026 figures actually mean
COLA and the average retired-worker payment
SSA set a 2.8% COLA for 2026. The adjustment is based on the change in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) from the third quarter of 2024 through the third quarter of 2025. SSA estimates that the average benefit for all retired workers payable in January 2026 is $2,071 per month. That is a reference point for the entire retired-worker population, not a forecast for you.

Illustrative maximums are not typical benefits
For 2026, SSA lists illustrative maximum monthly retirement benefits of $2,969 at age 62, $4,152 at full retirement age and $5,181 at age 70. Each example assumes the worker earned the taxable maximum every year beginning at age 22. Most workers do not meet that assumption, so these figures should not be used as a target or expectation.

The 2026 Social Security taxable maximum is $184,500 in covered earnings. Earnings above that annual cap are not subject to Social Security’s retirement-tax calculation for that year and do not increase the benefit beyond the program’s formula. The assumptions and examples are in SSA’s maximum-benefit FAQ.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you work while receiving Social Security?
Yes. You may work and receive retirement benefits, but before full retirement age SSA applies an earnings test to wages and net self-employment earnings. The test does not count pensions, annuities, investment income or interest as work earnings.

| Below full retirement age for the entire year | $24,480 in wages or net self-employment earnings | $1 in benefits withheld for every $2 earned above the limit. |
| Calendar year you reach full retirement age | $65,160, counting only earnings before the month you reach full retirement age | $1 in benefits withheld for every $3 earned above the limit. |
| Starting with the month you reach full retirement age | No earnings limit | Work earnings no longer reduce checks under the earnings test. |
Withheld checks are not necessarily lost forever
SSA says it later recalculates your benefit for months in which checks were withheld because of the earnings test. It also reviews additional covered earnings to determine whether they increase your benefit. If you retire partway through a year, a special monthly rule may allow benefits for months SSA considers you retired even when your earlier annual earnings exceed the regular limit. Because the timing and documentation matter, report your expected wages and retirement date promptly and ask SSA how the rule applies to your year.

What the trust-fund projection means for your retirement
The 2026 Trustees Report summary projects that the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) trust-fund reserves can pay full scheduled benefits through the fourth quarter of 2032. At reserve depletion, the report projects that continuing program income would cover 78% of scheduled OASI benefits under its assumptions. Its summary projects the payable share declining to 62% by 2100.
This is not a statement that Social Security stops paying in 2032 or that benefits fall to zero. It describes the point at which accumulated reserves are projected to be depleted and the share of scheduled benefits supportable by continuing income if no policy changes occur. The estimates are long-range projections, not guarantees. Read the assumptions and definitions in the 2026 Trustees Report summary.
How to test whether your benefit is enough
Build an expense-first retirement budget
List essential and discretionary costs separately. Essential costs commonly include housing, utilities, food, transportation, insurance, health care, taxes and minimum debt payments. Add irregular items such as home repairs, vehicle replacement and family support instead of assuming they will disappear.
Then compare the budget with guaranteed or highly dependable income: your SSA estimate at each claiming age, pensions and any other sources you can document. Savings withdrawals can fill a gap, but model a sustainable withdrawal plan rather than treating the account balance as spendable income for one year.
Stress-test the gap
- Use the lower and higher SSA estimates from your claiming-age comparison.
- Separate expenses that rise with inflation from those that are fixed or likely to decline.
- Include health-care premiums, out-of-pocket costs and taxes; neither is determined by the SSA benefit estimate.
- Model a period of part-time work if that is realistic, applying the 2026 earnings-test rules when relevant.
- Keep a reserve for emergencies so a large one-time expense does not force an early claim or an unsustainable withdrawal.
A practical decision checklist
- Verify your record: inspect your SSA earnings history and correct errors.
- Capture three estimates: record amounts at 62, full retirement age and 70, including the date and future-income assumption.
- Identify your baseline: calculate essential monthly expenses and annual irregular costs in current dollars.
- Map other resources: include pensions, savings, employment income and any household income you can reasonably expect.
- Check work timing: if you will claim before full retirement age, compare expected wages with the 2026 limits and notify SSA of changes.
- Plan for uncertainty: review the trust-fund projection as a policy risk, but do not assume either a zero benefit or an unchanged schedule decades into the future.
- Revisit annually: update the estimate, COLA, expenses and tax assumptions as your work and household circumstances change.
Social Security can be a dependable foundation, but whether it is enough is established only by matching your personal estimate to your personal spending plan. The decision is strongest when the claiming date, work schedule and savings strategy are evaluated together rather than in isolation.
