Yes, but not usually when you buy fully paid shares in a cash account. A share price cannot fall below zero, so the loss on that position is generally limited to what you paid for the shares. You can lose more than your initial cash when you borrow on margin, sell stock short, or write certain options. Interest, fees, margin rules and your brokerage agreement can also create obligations beyond the value of one position.
The short answer depends on your position
“Buying stock” can describe several very different transactions. Before estimating a worst-case loss, identify whether you own shares outright, borrowed money to buy them, sold borrowed shares, bought an option, or sold an option contract.

| Position | What you do | Potential loss boundary | Other exposure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fully paid stock | Pay the entire purchase price for shares | Generally limited to the amount paid for the shares, because the price cannot fall below zero | Separate fees or other account obligations may apply |
| Margin purchase | Borrow part of the purchase price from the broker | Can exceed your initial cash contribution | Interest, margin calls and broker liquidation |
| Short sale | Sell borrowed shares and later buy them back | Potentially unlimited if the share price keeps rising | Borrowing costs, margin rules and fees |
| Long option | Pay a premium for the right, but not the obligation, to trade | Generally limited to the premium paid | The contract can expire worthless, plus fees |
| Written option | Sell an option contract and take on an obligation | Depends on the strategy; some risks exceed the initial amount and can be potentially unlimited | Collateral and margin requirements may amplify exposure |
This distinction is central to the SEC investor bulletins on margin accounts, short sales and options. The SEC’s margin bulletin explicitly warns, “You can lose more money than you have invested;” that bulletin is staff guidance, not a Commission rule or regulation.
Fully paid shares: why the loss is generally capped
The share-price floor
If you pay cash for shares and do not borrow against them, the most the shares can lose in market value is the amount you paid. A stock priced at $40 can fall to $20, $1 or zero, but it cannot have a negative share price. At zero, the position is worthless and your market-value loss equals your purchase cost.

For a simple long position, the price component of the loss can be expressed as:
number of shares × purchase price when the shares ultimately become worthless.
That is a limit on the loss of that position, not a guarantee that the company will recover or that you will be able to sell at a favorable price.

What “limited to your investment” does and does not mean
The cap applies to the fully paid shares themselves. Brokerage commissions, transaction charges or other account-level obligations can affect your overall result. A separate margin loan, short position, option contract or unpaid charge in the same account is not transformed into a cash purchase merely because you also own fully paid stock.
Ownership also does not prevent a total loss. A company can fail, be delisted or become effectively worthless. “Limited” means the loss cannot exceed the cash committed to that share position through a price below zero; it does not mean the investment is safe.
Margin purchases: how debt can make a stock loss exceed your cash
The basic mechanics
With a margin purchase, you pay part of the price and borrow the rest from the broker. Your shares are collateral for the loan. The market value of the shares can fall to less than the outstanding balance, leaving you with negative equity in the position and a debt still owed to the broker.

A useful way to see the exposure is:
account equity = current market value of the shares − margin loan balance
Interest increases the loan balance over time. Fees and changing margin requirements can also reduce the equity available to support the position. If the shares become worthless, the collateral is gone but the loan does not disappear.
The SEC’s illustrative $50 example
The SEC’s margin bulletin uses a hypothetical stock bought at $50. The investor pays $25 and borrows $25. If the share price falls to $15, an investor who paid the full $50 loses 70% of the investment. The margin investor has only $15 of stock supporting a $25 loan: the investor loses more than 100% of the initial $25 contribution and still owes the broker another $10, plus interest.
Those figures illustrate the arithmetic of leverage; they are not a population statistic or a prediction of how often losses occur.
Margin calls can require cash quickly
If your equity falls below the broker’s required level, the broker may issue a margin call. You may have to deposit cash or eligible securities on short notice, or reduce the loan by selling assets. The required level and the time allowed can depend on the account agreement and applicable rules.
The broker may liquidate without asking first
Margin agreements generally give the broker authority to sell securities to cover a loan. The SEC warns that a broker may liquidate without consulting you and may choose which holdings to sell. A sale can lock in a loss, create a tax consequence and still leave a balance due if the proceeds do not cover the loan and charges. You cannot assume that waiting for a recovery will be permitted.

Requirements and costs can change
Interest rates, maintenance requirements and house policies are not necessarily fixed for the life of a trade. The SEC cautions that margin requirements can change and that margin may not be suitable for every investor. Read the account agreement for the initial and ongoing requirements, interest calculation, acceptable collateral, call procedures and liquidation rights before borrowing.
Short selling: why losses are potentially unlimited
What a short seller owes
In a short sale, you sell shares borrowed through your broker and later must buy equivalent shares to return them. You benefit if the repurchase price is lower than the sale price. You lose if the price rises.
The price loss before costs can be represented as:
repurchase price − original sale price per share.

A stock can rise from $20 to $40, $200 or higher. The SEC’s Investor Bulletin: An Introduction to Short Sales says shorting “leaves an investor open to the possibility of unlimited losses, since a stock can theoretically keep rising indefinitely.” “Unlimited” here describes the theoretical exposure, not a claim that every short sale will lose money.
Short positions have carrying costs
You may owe borrowing charges for the shares, as well as interest, transaction fees and any amounts required under margin rules. If the lender recalls the shares or the broker’s requirements change, you may have to close the position sooner than planned. A rising price can therefore create both a larger repurchase loss and a demand for additional collateral.
Why a stop order is not a fixed maximum
A planned exit price does not change the mathematical risk of the position. The market can move rapidly, a buy-to-cover order can execute at a different price, or the broker can require action under its agreement. Risk controls can be useful, but they are not the same as a contractual maximum loss.

Options: the contract determines the maximum
Buying an option
An option buyer pays a premium for a contract. If the option expires without value, the buyer can lose the premium paid, along with any applicable fees. The buyer is not normally exposed to losses greater than that premium solely because the underlying stock moves against the option.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The premium is paid up front, but the contract can lose value before expiration because of the stock price, time remaining and other market factors. “Limited loss” does not mean the option will retain resale value.
Writing an option
An option writer receives a premium but accepts an obligation if the holder exercises or the contract is assigned. The maximum loss depends on the strategy and whether the writer has offsetting shares or contracts. Some writing strategies can lose more than the initial amount and can have potentially unlimited losses. Margin or collateral requirements can force the writer to add funds or close the position.
Do not infer the risk of a written option from the risk of buying the same option. They are opposite contractual positions with different obligations. The SEC options bulletin, updated July 16, 2026, describes these separate risks.

Use the following inventory before deciding whether the phrase “my investment” describes your real risk:
- Identify the instrument. Confirm whether the position is common stock, an exchange-traded fund share, a margin purchase, a short sale or an option. An account can contain several at once.
- Check whether the shares are fully paid. Look for a debit or margin-loan balance. If money was borrowed, the cash you deposited is not the same as the amount at risk.
- Calculate the obligation. For a long cash position, compare the purchase cost with a zero value. For margin, subtract the loan from current value. For a short, consider the cost to buy back the borrowed shares at a much higher price.
- Read collateral and call terms. Find the maintenance requirement, what counts as collateral, how quickly a call must be met and whether the broker can sell without prior approval.
- Add recurring charges. Check interest, stock-borrow charges, contract fees and other charges that can continue while the position remains open.
- Check the exit authority. Determine who can close the trade, which assets may be sold and whether the broker can change requirements. Keep a copy of the current agreement because terms can be revised.
Common misunderstandings that lead to oversized losses
“The company can only go to zero, so I cannot owe more.”
That is generally true only for fully paid shares considered by themselves. Borrowed money changes the equation: the shares can reach zero while the loan remains payable.

“A margin call is just a warning.”
A call can require new cash or securities quickly, and the broker may sell holdings if the requirement is not met or if its agreement permits immediate action. Do not assume you will receive time to choose which assets are sold.
“Shorting is the same as buying and selling later.”
A long investor sells an asset already owned. A short seller must buy back an asset that was borrowed. The long position has a zero-price floor; the short position faces a price with no theoretical upper limit.
“Every option buyer can lose everything and more.”
A long option buyer can generally lose the premium paid. Larger-than-premium exposure is associated with option-writing strategies and other leveraged arrangements, not with the basic purchase of a single option contract.

Questions to answer before using leverage or shorting
- What exact position am I opening, and what must I deliver or repay?
- What is the maximum loss if the stock goes to zero, doubles, or rises far beyond the price I expect?
- How much cash or eligible collateral could the broker require, and how quickly?
- Can the broker liquidate without contacting me, and can it choose the securities sold?
- What interest, borrow charge, contract fee or other cost accrues while I wait?
- Can the broker change requirements, and where will those changes be communicated?
- Would a total loss or an additional debit be affordable without selling unrelated assets?
The SEC describes margin, short selling and options as distinct risk categories. Reviewing the contract and account terms is therefore as important as reviewing the stock itself.
Bottom line for the headline question
If you buy and fully pay for ordinary shares, your loss on those shares is generally capped at the amount paid because the price cannot fall below zero. You can lose more than your initial cash when the position includes a margin loan, a short sale or certain written options. In those cases, debt, rising repurchase costs, collateral calls, interest, fees and broker liquidation rights can leave you owing money after the original contribution is gone.
